Chapter 5

I slowly regained consciousness, but I felt so weak. My body was really heavy it was hard for me to even open my eyes. As I saw the light in the room I noticed a beautiful woman in a white robe. I wanted to say something to her but words couldn’t come out of my mouth all I could do was stare at her. She came to me and started to speak but I couldn’t make the words coming out of her mouth. I was still tired from everything and I started to doze off. As I came to again my body regained some of its strength, but not enough to get out of the bed. As my eyes opened I saw my comrades.

“Morning sunshine.” Kennen said with a grin on his face.

“You’re okay.” I replied back

“Yeah we all are.” Hoango said joining the conversation.

The weights on my shoulders were lifted, “How did I survive?”

“You were very lucky.” The woman I saw before came into the room, “If you didn’t cast that phoenix down spell you’d probably be dead by now.”

“Who are you?” I asked

“I’m Kazusa,” She said lifting the blankets covering my body, “Come on sit up.”

I tired sitting up, but it was difficult. The pain on my chest was still there. Hoango and Kennen helped me to sit up because I wasn’t able to manage. Kazusa started to undo the bandages off my chest.

“You have amazing comrades,” She said, “If it weren’t for them I think you would be dead.”

“What do you mean?” I replied

“I carried you back here.” Yaj said entering the room with Sophie, “You guys were a mess when we found you. Kazusa helped us in the forest when Hoango and I were lost. We got really worried and set off to find you and Kennen. Hoango wasn’t able to go so Kazusa came in his place.”

“Yaj… Sophie…” I smiled with warmth

“Oh my, your wound has already sealed.” Kazusa said putting her hand on my chest.

Her touch was warm. I didn’t want her to lift her hand off my chest. I looked deeply into her eyes, “how long was I out for?”

“A week.” Kennen said in a snot tone.

I look over to him, “Really?” Kazusa lifted her hand off my chest.

“Yeah we’ve been waiting for you to wake up.” Hoango said as I noticed a bandaged around his knee.

“Hoango your knee, are you alright?” I asked.

“Oh this… yeah I donno but someone shot an arrow at my knee. It literally came out of nowhere and struck me at the knee.”

I look over to Sophie. She nods her head making sure I don’t mention it, “Oh man what luck, and your parachute didn’t go off ether.”

“I know!” Hoango said in despair. “I’m a monk where is my darma!”

“Sophie I should tell you about our quest.” I said to her

“Oh don’t worry about it. These guys already gave me the run down.” She replied, “We had a lot of time to talk while you were asleep.”

“You shouldn’t be up and about too much yet, you’ve just recovered. Don’t make sudden movements just because your wound has sealed doesn’t mean you’re insides are okay.” Kazusa said to me before leaving the room, “Stay here a little while longer please...” she smiled.

“We will.” I said before I even realized I responded to her. “Did I say that out loud?”

Kennen looks at me with ‘the eye’, “Yes you did.”

Sophie also gave me ‘the eye’, “Yes you did.”

The both of them gave each other ‘the eye’ and spoke at the same time, “Let’s go talk!” the stormed out of the room.

Hoango threw his hand on my shoulder, “Donattsu… you make it so obvious.” He walks out of the room.

“I have no idea what they’re talking about.” Yaj left the room as well.

I slowly got out of bed and went over to my gear. I slowly strapped on my armor making sure it doesn’t touch my wound. Our group is in the village of the White Mages. These magicians study magic to protect and heal the wounded in battle. As I got dress I left the small hut that I’ve been sleeping in all this time. As I came out people gave me a dirty look. I ignored the faces and went off to find my friends. The village itself was actually quit big it’s more of a small town than it is a village. As I was walking along this path I saw Hoango moving in a slow but elegant manner. I went over to him to see what he was up to.

“Hoango what are you doing?” I asked him.

Hoango stopped his movement, “It’s called Tai Chi.”

“Tai Chi?” I replied

“Yeah I’ll teach you, it’s good remedy for the body, and since you’ve been sleeping for a long time it’ll help you quite a bit.” He said as I walked over to him. “Now we start with a simple movement like so.”

I followed Hoango’s slow movements with my own. I don’t know much about martial arts so this is quite new for me, but it felt good. This Tai Chi that we are doing is leaving a good sensation in my body.

“You’re catching on pretty quick,” Hoango said to me, “So I have to ask you, do you have the hots for that White Mage?”

My movements stuttered, “What are you talking about?”

“Oh don’t give me that crap,” He said as people started to join us in this Tai Chi. “I saw how you were eyeing her down.”

“I was not eyeing her down.” I lied, “I’m a paladin we must resist the urge of lust.”

“Paladin’s also serve a Lord, do you have one?” he replied.

“Touché,” I said, “okay maybe I was looking at her, so what I was just looking.”

“You should talk to her.” He suggested

“Talk to her? I donno, it seemed like she didn’t really like me.” I said as our movements became more difficult.

“Donattsu I’m going to tell you something that I shouldn’t, when you were sleeping, Kazusa was by your side the whole time you were asleep.”

“Hoango that’s her job, she’s a white mage.”

“No, dude I wasn’t suppose to see this, but there was a time I walked in the hut to check on you and… well, she kissed you.”

I stopped my movements, “What!”

“I’m serious she didn’t notice me, so I just turned around and walked away, but yeah she has the hots for you.” Hoango said as he continued his Tai Chi.

“I’ma take a walk.” I left the group.

“Think about it Donattsu!” he shouted as I continued to walk away.

That can’t be right Honago must be lying, kissing me while I slept? She doesn’t seem like that kind of a girl. Her personality was kind of cold towards me, but what if… no I shouldn’t have hope. I don’t think she feels the same way. Hoango must be lying. As I was on this stroll I heard someone singing a song in the distant. I was familiar with the song so I went to see who was singing it. It was coming from the edge of the town. I pass through some trees only to find a beautiful sight. I saw Kazusa singing in the horizon.

“With you gone, I brush the desk

As the shadow drops, I'm alone again today

Looking up at the sky, I pray

Knowing you're under this same sky “

I walked up from behind her and sang the second verse to the song.

“At times when you're shaking with tears

And times when you seem to be engulfed by the darkness

Don't forget...

You always have...

You always have a place to return to

And people that are waiting for you”

She was frightened by my appearance. “You startled me.” She steps away from me.

“Oh… I’m sorry, I heard you sing and I recognized it. My guardian used to sing me the same song.” I said to her trying not to scare her off.

“You heard me sing…” she looks away in embarrassment.

“Yeah you’re very good.” I said to her

“Then why did you sing the second verse,” she said, “Are you looking down on me?”

“What? No why would I?” I said in confusion.

“Because you’re really good.” She said as her cheeks started to turn red.

“Thank you, but you have a beautiful voice. Do you sing often?”

“No… not really… hmmm I have to go.” She ran off.

“Wait.” I tried to stop her but she was already out of my reach. “Did I say something wrong?”

“Damn it Donattsu!” Kennen came around behind a tree.

“Kennen?”

“You totally blew it.” Sophie dropped down from the tree branch.

“What are you guys talking about?”

“You totally scared her off.” Kennen said as the both of them walks up to me.

“You can’t come on strong like that Donattsu; women need time to sink it in.” Sophie said as they lectured me.

“Yeah singing to her,” Kennen spoke, “But man you can sing I’d probably make love to you if I was a girl.”

“Don’t say things like that Kennen.”

“Hey… no Homo.”

“Anyways look, you totally have the hots for her, so me and Kennen are gonna help you out!” Sophie said saluting to me.

“Thanks guys but no thanks I’ll be okay.” I said running after her.

“We got work to do.” Kennen said to Sophie.

“Yeah let’s set up the scene.” She replied back. “Did you do it?”

“Yeah he’ll knock out in about two hours, he didn’t even notice the dart I shot at him. Hope he finds her in that amount of time.” Kennen replied as he vanishes and Sophie jumps up into the trees.

“She couldn’t have gotten that far.” I said panting as Yaj bumps into me.

“Oh Donattsu didn’t see you there.” He said carrying blocks of wood on his shoulder.

“What are you doing Yaj?”

“Helping out around the village this place kind of reminds me of home.”

“That’s nice, but did you by chance see a white mage run by?”

“Kazusa?”

“How’d you know?”

“You make it pretty obvious.”

“Okay fine, I like Kazusa!” I blurted out loud not realizing my surroundings.

Yaj lifts up his right eye brow and gives me the look. “Man your brave.”

“What are you talking about?” He pointed behind me.

I turn to see who it was and there she was Kazusa standing there with a bright red face. She turned the opposite direction and started to run off. I tried to stop her, “Wait!” as I took a step I started to feel dizzy, my vision was blur and I started to lose strength in my legs. Before I knew it I was knock out cold. As I came to I heard voices, I looked over to see Kazusa and Sophie talking to each other. Their backs were turned to me so they didn’t notice I was awake. I lied there quietly to listen in on their conversation.

“So what did he do?” Sophie questioned her.

“He said it out loud, I’m sorry, but I can’t fall in love with him.” She replied in return breaking my heart just a little bit.

“But you like him, I can see it.”

“You don’t know the situation, it’d be best if we stay apart and don’t have feelings for one another.”

“Have you ever fallin in love?”

“No…”

“This is your chance I mean come on Donattsu’s a pretty good lookin guy.”

“It’s not about his looks, it’s just I can’t.”

“What is stopping you?”

“I was put up for sale to the King of Youmi… which is why Donattsu and I can’t be together.”

“You… were auctioned off like a price tag deal type thing?!”

“Youmi is a town not far from here, and they raided our village not too long ago, they were going to burn us to the ground unless the king was able to find a suitable wife, and well lucky me I was the one he chose.”

“That’s so sad…”

“So I accepted his offer to protect my village.”

“But in your heart… who do you truly have feelings for?”

“Of course, Donattsu I don’t know what it is, but every time I see him my heart skips a beat.”

“This is sooooo cute it’s love at first sight.” Sophie starts jumping around.

“And when he said that he had feelings for me, I just didn’t know what to do. I don’t want to get too close to him only to break his heart.”

Sophie placed a hand on her shoulder. “Follow your gut.”

“My gut?”

“Yep, if your gut tells you to fall in love with Donattsu do it, because it’ll never lie to you.”

“This is such a hard decision.”

“Just give it time.” she said as she left the hut.

The conversation was over and I acted as if nothing ever happened. I closed my eyes and went back to ‘Sleep’ I heard her walking over to me. It felt as if she was leaning over above me I was able to feel her warmth. She spoke, “I’m sorry, I’m going to steal a kiss again… I’m so selfish.”

As she came in for the kiss I stopped her, “You can’t steal the kiss… you have to earn it.” I opened my eyes.

She was surprised and shocked, “Were you awake this whole time!?”

“I’d be lying if I said no.” she tried to run off again, but I was able to grab her arm before she got any farther, “Stop.”

“Then you heard everything…”

“I did,” I got up out of the bed, “But that doesn’t mean anything.”

She turns around to me, “What do you mean it doesn’t mean anything!?”

“My feelings for you aren’t going to change because of that.”

She turns away from me, with my other hand I held her face, “Don’t turn away from me, our feelings for each other, they’re mutual aren’t they.”

“Of course… from the moment I first saw you, my heart stopped, I have trouble breathing, and my body gets weak.”

I brought her face closer to mine, “Say it.”

She hesitated and I spoke again, “Say it.”

“I love you.”

And with those words our lips touched such a warm feeling, it was nice and gentle but our mood was interrupted with the dynamic duo.

Kennen fell over the door mat making a ruckus, “See Sophie I told ya they were making out.”

“Damn it Kennen they know were here!” Sophie helped Kennen to his feet.

“Guys…” I said to them as they gave each other a hand shake.

“Best wing group ever!” Kennen said.

“Agreed.” Sophie replied as they left.

“You have amazing friends.” Kazusa said as we sat on the bed.

“Yeah… I do, to me they are more than just friends. They are my family.” I replied to her.

“Family…” She said abruptly

“Is something wrong?” I said in comfort.

“I never really had a family.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Oh no I…”

“Please… tell me, so that I will know how to cheer you up.” I said as I held her close.

“When I was young, my family was taken away from me. I don’t remember much, all I could remember were the screams and the tears, the pain.” She started to cry.

I lifted her chin with my hand, “Stop no more…”

“This is why I am accepting my fate, I don’t wish for this village to be burned down like my home. This is my new home and I would do anything to protect it.”

“I understand how you feel, something so precious that you have to protect.”

“This is why I don’t want us to accumulate feelings for each other. It’ll only be harder for us.” She said as she tried to pull away from my arms.

I didn’t let her escape my grasp, “I don’t care if it’s not for long… I’d rather do something and regret it, than not try at all.”

She looks me in the eyes, “Why do you have to say it like that…”

“So we can be together.” I brought my face closer to hers.

“Why do I feel so weak when I’m so close to you, my face is hot, my breathing gets heavy.”

“It’s something called love because I feel the same way.”

“You do…”

“Yeah.” Just when we were about to kiss.

“Just kiss her already!” Kennen and Sophie shouted at the front of the entrance to the hut.

“Were you guys eavesdropping on us?” I said as I let go of Kazusa.

“Run…” Kennen suggested.

“Agreed,” Sophie follows as they left out of our sights.

Kazusa got off the bed, “How long are you going to stay?”

I hesitated because I wanted to stay with her. I wish she would come with us, but I can’t force that upon her. “Until you leave, then I will leave.”

“I don’t have long.” She replied, “After the White Mage ceremony tomorrow I will be gone.”

“Then that gives me one day to make you the happiest girl in Vana’diel.”

She walks up to me with a smile as she threw her arms around me. “Thank you, I won’t have much time with you today or even tomorrow, because I must practice. There will be a festival after I perform the ritual. Let us be together then.”

“All right then until tomorrow night.” I said as I went in for a kiss

She stopped me before our lips touched, “You don’t get one till tomorrow.” She left before I could say anything.

I smiled and went out of the hut to find my comrades, but it seems my comrades saved me the trouble and found me.

“So were staying aren’t we.” Hoang said before I could speak.

“Yeah…” I replied, “I’m sorry for being selfish guys.”

“Don’t be.” Sophie said to comfort. “You’re in love, I think it’s sweet.”

“You only live once so live large Donattsu, besides we don’t mind staying for another day right guys?” Kennen said as he pointed out to Yaj. Yaj was being charmed by the other white mages of the village, “Seems like Yaj wouldn’t mind.”

“I don’t care, Donattsu wherever you go I go.” Hoango said, “You’re kind of the leader after all.”

“Leader…?” I questioned, “I don’t like being called that, we all share an idea in our group, don’t let me be the one to make all the decisions.”

“But you kind of do…” Kennen said making a valid point.

“If I do I’m sorry guys. I don’t mean to be that kind of a person.” I apologized.

“Don’t worry about it, it’s good to have a leader. Someone that makes the choices you know.” Sophie said, “But enough about that, what’s going on with you and Kazusa?”

“Well as of right now nothing, I’m not supposed to see her until tomorrow after she performs a ceremony.”

“Why would you agree to that…?” Sophie said to me giving me a disappointing look.

“So it’ll make the time we do spend together more precious before she goes.”

“She’s not gonna go she’s gonna be with you.” Sophie started a friendly argument.

“I can’t stop her all I can do is wish for her happiest.”

“Yeah happiest… is she going to be happy with someone she isn’t in love with?”

“You may be right, but even if she was in a different situation. I can’t drag her along with us on our quest.”

“Because she isn’t one of us… Donattsu we can always use a healer.”

“Stop it, I’m not going to force this upon her.”

“Whatever do what you want.” Sophie jumps into the trees and disappears.

Hoango walks over to me, “Your doing the right thing Donattsu.”

“Yeah, Thanks Hoango.” I said ending our conversation, and soon before we knew it the next day came by pretty fast.

The village no longer looked as it did before tonight. Everything was filled with color and lights. Music was playing in the backroom, children running with joy. The atmosphere is different than it was it was before everyone is so relaxed, but at the same time it seems they are all feeling grief, it might be because they are losing Kazusa after tonight. I found myself at the center of the village with everyone else we all sat and waited for Kazusa to come out and perform the ceremony to bless the village. Moments later Kazusa came out to the center stage. She was so beautiful in her white dress it was decorated with red triangles around the sleeves and the hood. Her movement was so elegant the music queued and she began to sing to the audience.

“Inside my head I can hear your voice

Even now, my heart is fluttering

In my memories, you’re always there

Smiling softly

One day, we were going home together

Laughing as we held each other’s hands

I felt that it would go on forever

Your lasts words [Thank you for everything]

Continues to echo

I want to see you, the voice that’s no longer there

I keep on calling out your name

Such sorrow, such pain

The lonely night scares me

I look up to the sky

searching for you”

As she finished the last verse of the song she took a bow and left the stage.

The gang made me gets up to chase after her, “Go get her tiger!” Sophie said pushing me

I left the group to go find her. As I took a stroll a hand grabbed my arm, and dragged me into a hut.

“Did you see,” She said putting her arms around my waste.

“Yeah everything, is was so beautiful.” I threw my arms around her shoulders.

Our faces grew closer together, “How come it’s always like this whenever I’m with you.” She said as her breathing became harder.

“You tell me.” I said as our lips touched.

“My body gets so hot when I’m next to you.” She said as our lips touched again.

I lifted one of her legs around my waste, and I started to kiss her neck. I started to unbutton her robe.

I can hear her hard breathing, “Lower… go lower.” Her wish was my command I went lower down next to her chest area. With my right hand I started to caress her chest and fondle her. Before I realized it she took off my mail and my undergarment. I threw her up against the wall and before we began we had an unexpected guess…

“Donattsu!” Kennen shouts and barged into the hut without realized what Kazusa and I are about to do.

Kazusa was surprised and covered herself with parts of her robe; I turned to Kennen, “Yes Kennen.”

Kennen slowly turns away, “I’m going to pretend I didn’t see anything…” Kennen left the scene.

“I’m so sorry.” I said apologizing to Kazusa.

“No, no don’t be I should be the one to apologize I was taken over by my lust.”

“So was I,”

“But I dragged you into this hut.” She said putting her robe back on.

I started to put my clothes back on as well, “I should have stopped.”

“We both should of.” She said as she came over to me and gave me a kiss.

A sudden noise of screams came from outside of the hut, “Did you hear that?”

“Oh no…” Kazusa dashed out of the hut and I trailed not far behind her. As we went out we saw part of the village on fire, and a cavalry was attacking the town. I saw Hoango engaging them and I went over to him to help. I drew my blade and parried an attack aimed at Hoango from behind. We stood back to back with each other anticipating the next attack.

“What’s going on!” I shouted

“I don’t know, all of a sudden these people came into the village and started to raid it!” Hoango sent a shockwave of chi toward a solder.

“Where are the others!” I parried an incoming sword with my shield.

“Probably around helping the town as we speak!” Hoango did a sweep kick to knock down his enemies.

I saw a barrage of arrows and I stood in front of Hoango with my shield up. “Hoango arrows!”

“That’s too many your shield isn’t going to block all of them!” Hoango shouted.

“Hurricane shot!” an arrow spun in the air breaking the ones aimed at us. “You guys okay!” Sophie rushed over with her bow. “I see seven…” she pulled out seven arrows and lunched them at once sniping seven bowmen from the other side.

“Sophie look out!” I saw a tomahawk aimed at her.

“What a weak throw!” Yaj threw his own tomahawk to block the incoming attack. Yaj went to the front of the line with his axe and with one giant swing the soldiers we were up against went flying in the air.

We regrouped but as we did we were circled by the overpowering number of this army. “What do we do!?

“Stop!” A male voice came from afar. He rode up to us on a hoarse. “What do we have here?”

“Who are you!” I demanded

“I am Baltheir the King of Youmi.” He said to us, “Now who are you all?”

“Stop this Baltheir!” Kazusa spoke out. “You’re not supposed to be here we made an agreement!”

“Yes we did but I just couldn’t wait anymore.” He said putting his arm out, “Now come let us go and the village lives.”

She hesitated and looks over to me. “Goodbye.” A tear came down her face.

“No Kazusa!” Sophie shouted and tried to stop her from going.

I held Sophie back, “Stop… let her go.”

“Donattsu!”

“Sophie were outnumbered and this her wish, please.” A tear came down my face.

“This isn’t fair.” She stopped and disarmed her bow.

Kazusa got on the hoarse and rode off, before they got far she turned back to give me one last goodbye and blew me a kiss. I faintly saw something glow on her finger, it was a ring and the stone resonated with all of ours.

Hoango looks over to me, “We just gonna simply let her go now?”

I shook my head. “No, we’re going after her.”

“Yes! Love prevails!” Sophie jumps with joy.

“Guys where’s Kennen.” Yaj mentioned.

“Over here.” Kennen said to us. “And I found comrades!”

We went over to Kennen and the three men that were behind him. “Comrades?” I said

The three of them pulled out there crystals. “We wish to aid you.” The one in the middle spoke.

“While Donattsu was getting it in, and when you guys were fighting I went and helped these three and they all had a crystal which resonated with mine.” Kennen said acting high and mighty.

“That’s our treasure hunter.” I said to him as I greeting the man in the middle of the group. “What’s your name?”

He took his hand out to shake mine, “Taira.”
