Chapter 9:
Squall was sitting on a bench, Quistis beside him. Doctors and nurses were walking down the corridors, looking busy and not even noticing them. A weak
looking old man came to sit next to them, dragging an infusion bottle with him.
"Oh, my poor back hurts. You know boy, if the youth of today would show some respect for us old people, I would be happily sitting in my garden. When *I*
was young, we knew how to behave and-" The old man went on, but Squall didn't even hear him. His mind was with Seifer, who was with the doctor in the
next room. Squall could hear the phone ring near by for the fifth time, the sound annoying him.
"Why can't they answer the damn thing!" he hissed through clenched teeth.
"Watch your language young man! *I* fought in the first Sorceress War and I don't need to-" Squall was balling his fists.
"Look gramps! I don't give a fuck what you-" Squall was interrupted by Quistis who took the brunette's hand and squeezed it lightly.
"Let's go take a little walk Squall, come, get up." she motioned the boy to follow her. They walked down the corridor in silence. Quistis knew Squall was
feeling nervous and scared, so she remained silent and just let him be.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Seifer was sitting in a comfortable chair, listening to the doctor. "I am now going to explain you the details of your operation Mr. Almasy." the doctor said,
leaning back in his chair. "I presume you already know it has risks, and the chances for you to get your sight back are few. And you are still willing to pay and
go through with it?" Seifer gave him a nod, a determined look on his face. "Now, we will be using a newly invented lazer technique to try and fix your
damaged optical nerves. The method is very accurate and in some cases, has showed remarkable results." The doctor leaned forward. "The method however,
is very new, so it is risky. *If* something should go wrong, which I highly doubt, some parts of your brain could be permanently damaged. It could, for
instance, affect your motor coordination, or your normal behaviour. In worst case, it will cause a blood clot in to your brain, and-"
The clock on the wall was making a loud ticking noise, distracting Seifer. He could suddenly hear the blood rush in his brains, making the doctor's voice sound
distant and weak. He found it hard to concentrate and it felt like he wasn't really even in the room.
"Mr. Almasy?...Mr.Almasy are you listening?" Seifer raised his face when he heard the doctor call his name.
"Huh? I--I was.." he blinked his eyes and tried to concentrate. The doctor continued.
"The operation will last approximately five hours, and you will be unconscious the whole time. After that, you will be taken into the
waking room and from there, you will be moved into your own private room, provided by the President." The look on the doctor's face made it pretty clear
that he didn't approve the fact that the President was helping the Sorceress' Knight, by paying for his operation. "You will be under heavy medication for some
time, the pain in your eyes and face being strong. The bandages will be removed after seven days, and we will inspect your eyes for any infections and we will
also see if the operation was a success." With this said, the doctor stood up and called a nurse from the other room. "Miss Garland, prepare Mr. Almasy for the
operation." he said and left the room.
"Hello, I'm Lisa." the nurse said with a smile on her face. She led Seifer on a bed and gave him a hospital garment. "Here sweetheart, can you change into
this?" she asked with a motherly voice. Seifer mumbled something and started to undress. He could hear his heart beat in his ears, and felt his entire body
tremble uncontrollably. Lisa noted this and gave Seifer a little smile.
"Let me help you dear." she said, and helped Seifer change into the green garment. "Now, lay down on the bed." Seifer did what he was told and lay on the
narrow bed. He suddenly felt a wave of panic strike him and jumped up.
'I-I want Squall! I need him here! I don't want to go without saying good bye first!'
"I-I need to-" he stammered. The nurse however, ignored him and gently lowered Seifer back on the bed and took his hand.
"Stay still dear, I am going to insert a cannula on your hand, and it will hurt more if you move."
"What? What's a--Aahh!" Seifer yelped when Lisa stuck the needle into his vein and set the small cannula on place.
"Now I am going to help you relax, by giving you some tranquillizer." She used a syringe to put the medicine into the cannula.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Quistis, he's been there for an hour already! How long is it going to take for them to-" The door was opened and Lisa was pushing the bed Seifer lay on, out
of the room. "Seifer!" Squall exclaimed and grabbed the blonde's hand. The nurse gave Squall a questioning look.
"We are Mr. Almasy's friends, and we're here to see him off." Quistis explained.
"Oh, I see." Lisa said and gave her a smile. "Our little patient here has had a doze of tranquillizer, so he's pretty far out there already. But, please, do say
your good byes, I can wait."
Squall frowned and leaned forward, holding Seifer's hand. "Seifer...can you hear me?" he whispered into the blonde's ear.
"Squall?" Seifer asked, raising his hand to feel the brunette's face. The look in his face was content and a bit drowsy.
"Don't be afraid, it's going to be just fine." Squall said, smiling, but felt his eyes fill with tears. Seifer was feeling the brunette's face with his fingers. "And I'll
be here when you wake up, I promise.."
"Ok, we should get him into the operating room, the doctors are waiting for him." Lisa said and gave Squall a smile. Squall leaned back and squeezed Seifer's
hand one final time, before letting go. "The operation will probably be over in five or six hours, and he will be taken into the waking room, and after that into
his personal room. You can come back to visit him, in the evening." Squall and Quistis watched Lisa roll the bed into an elevator. When the elevator doors had
closed, Squall turned around and started walking. The moment they were out of the hospital, the bruette stopped and stood still. Quistis saw the look on
Squall's face and embraced the boy. "Let's go now and come back later."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Seifer could hear Lisa talk to him, but didn't really understand what she was saying. He realised they were in the operating room, and also heard there were
other people in the room. The blonde could feel hands touching his chest and arms. Someone was putting some weird flaps on both sides of his chest and on
his head. The other pair of hands was fiddling with the cannula. He could hear the people were talking and could distinguish some words.
"The monitor....his EEG....anesthetic nurse.....pass out almost immediately." One of the nurses filled the cannula with anesthetics. "Ok, Seifer, you are going
to feel a bit drowsy now, and you will soon fall asleep. When you wake up, you will be in the waking room. Can you count to ten for us?" she asked. It took
some time for the words to sink in, but after a moment of silence, Seifer opened his mouth and started counting.
"One...Two...Three..." He could feel odd stinging sensation in his left arm, and his legs felt like stone. It also felt like someone really heavy was sitting on his
chest. All the voices in the room were beginning to sound distant. His head spun. It felt almost like he was *really* drunk. "....six....sev-"
"Ok doctor, the patient is unconscious."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Squall stood in front of the window of his bedroom. The sky was dark, but the huge city before him was full of light. There were aeroplanes flying above the
tall buildings and the roads were filled with different vehicles. 'It's already evening...Why haven't they called us? Is Seifer still being operated?' There was a
frown on Squall's face, and he kept glancing at the clock. There was a knock on the door. "Yes!?" Squall growled. A servant stepped in.
"Mr. Leonhart, they called from the hospital. Miss Trepe is waiting for you at the Palace yard. The President's car will take you to the hospital." Squall shoved
the man aside and ran through the corridors.
'He didn't say why they called...What if something went wrong and-' He didn't want to finish his thought, but kept running, until he was out of the Palace and
saw Quistis. "Quis!! What's wrong? Is-" Quistis looked up, smiling.
"Relax Squall! Everything is fine." They stepped into the dark Limousine. "The operation went well, and Seifer's been taken into the waking room as we
speak." Squall felt relieved. "Thank Hyne..."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Hey Mister! Mister are ya listening?" a young boy's voice called. Seifer was starting to wake up. His mind was hazy.
'What? Where am I?'
"Mister are you a pirate?"
'A pirate? Who's a pirate? Am I still dreaming?' Seifer tried to open his eyes, but realised his eyelids were covered with some sort of bandages.
"Johnny! I see you're awake." a woman's voice called. "You haven't been bothering this man, have you Johnny?"
"No, but why does he look like a pirate nurse Lisa?" the boy next to Seifer asked.
"He had an eye operation. But now we'll take you to your room. Mommy and Daddy are waiting." she said, and another nurse came for the boy.
"Bye mister!" he said, as his bed was being rolled out from the room.
"I see you too are awake Mr. Almasy." Lisa said, standing next to Seifer's bed. "You will now be taken into your room." Seifer still felt sleepy. The pillow under
his head felt so comfortable and soft. He just wanted to fall asleep again. Seifer was aware that they were going through a lobby, and that there were lots of
people around him. He could hear voices from different directions. "You have your own room. Isn't that nice? You'll be getting some privacy." Lisa said, as she
pushed the bed through double doors, into Seifer's room. Squall and Quisty were sitting on a red sofa, and got up when Lisa appeared in the room.
"Can you get up Seifer, and move into this bed here? It's a lot more comfortable than the one you're lying on." Seifer slowly sat up, his whole body felt like
jelly. Squall was immediately by his side, and helped Lisa move the blonde onto the comfy looking bed. "Ok, the doctor will be here shortly, to explain how
the operation went." Lisa said and left the room.
"Squall, I'll be at the Cafeteria." Quistis followed the nurse. Squall sat on the chair, next to the bed. Seifer was starting to come to his senses.
"Squall? Are you here?" he asked, his voice sounding weak.
"I'm here Seifer." Squall said, softly touching the blonde's cheek. Seifer smiled, but yelped, when the muscles on his face suddenly ached. "Don't smile
sweetheart..." Squall whispered. Seifer's eyes were covered with a white bandage. The part of the skin that showed under it, was red. It looked like he had
sunburns. Squall knew it was because of the operation. The brunette just wanted to climb into the bed and curl up next to the man he loved, and never get
up. He wanted to kiss Seifer and hold him in his arms so much, his heart ached. 'He looks so helpless...'
The door was suddenly opened, and a man in a white coat marched in. "Oh, I didn't know my patient had company. Do you mind stepping out of the room
and-"
"No, he's staying." Seifer said firmly. "Very well then." the doc said and walked to Seifer, pushing Squall aside. The brunette glared at him, but stepped back.
"So Mr. Almasy, how are you feeling? Miss Garland told me you just arrived from the waking room."
"I feel a little tired...And my face hurts more than it did a few minutes ago."
"Yes, well you will be given something for the pain soon." The doctor inspected the skin surrounding Seifer's eyes, causing the blonde to grit his teeth. "The
redness and swelling will be gone in few days...Now, the operation went well. There were no complications. We will remove the bandages after seven days,
and see what the results are." Seifer swallowed audibly. "The nurse will be here soon to give you something for the pain Mr. Almasy. Now if you excuse me.."
The doctor left and closed the door. The room went silent. They were both thinking the same.
'What if the operation was a failure...It probably was...the chances for it to be a success being so few...' Squall took Seifer's hand and just held it, without
saying a word. They were visited by the nurse, who gave Seifer something for the pain. Later, when she came to tell it was time for Squall to leave, Squall
told her, he wasn't going anywhere. Instead, he stayed by Seifer's side all night.
