Sudden Darkness

**AN: It's not nice to read your first ever fanfic after almost a year! Seifer is so damn OOC in this fic. I hope I'm at least a little
better nowadays...*

Chapter 10:

It was morning. Seifer sat on his bed, yawning and stretching. He could hear Squall, who was sleeping on the sofa near by,
snore lightly. It had been a week from the operation. Today the doctor would come and remove the bandages from Seifer's eyes.
He probably should have been excited and anxious to see the results of the operation. However, the blonde was reluctant to
even think about the removal of the bandages. Seifer couldn't quite comprehend that today would be the day he'd know if he'll
finally be able to see again. To see himself when ever he stood before a mirror. To see Squall's face and body, instead of just
feeling it. Seifer hadn't seen the world or the brunette in four months. Everything had been black. He still had these images off
Squall. He remembered what the boy looked like, when he got angry for example. But Seifer didn't *know* what Squall looked
like, when ever he gave the blonde one of his rare smiles.

Seifer sighed and felt the bandages with his fingers. 'If I won't be able to see, when I open my eyes today...it's ...it's ok...I guess
I'll just...NO it's *not* ok! I *don't* want to see only darkness, when ever I open my eyes!' There was a frown on Seifer's face
and he was getting agitated, but a light knock on the door took his mind elsewhere. Lisa stepped in.

"Morning dear." she said happily, walking over to the bed. She put the breakfast tray on the table.

"Morning Lisa.." Seifer replied. He really liked the woman. She had taken good care of him during the week.

"What's with the blue face sweetie? Isn't today the day you and your little boyfriend there have been waiting for?"

"Yeah, I guess.." Seifer sighed and forced a small smile. The noises in the room broke into Squall's dreams, and the brunette
was starting to wake up. He slowly opened his eyes and sat up on the sofa.

"Good morning to you too sleepyhead." Lisa laughed and gave the drowsy-looking man a smile. Squall narrowed his sleepy
eyes and ran his fingers through his messy brown hair. "Time to get some breakfast and then it's time to remove the bandages.
You want me to call Miss Trepe?" Lisa asked.

"Yeah, if you could." Came Seifer's reply.

"Of course. I'll call her immediately. Here, eat this you two. The doctor will be here after his round." Lisa handed Squall the
tray and left the room.

Squall came to sit next to Seifer. He gave the blonde a sandwich and they both started eating. The brunette was inspecting the
look on the older boy's face with narrowed eyes.

"Seifer...How do you feel...right now?" he asked, taking a bite from his toast.

"Well...I feel like saying that I *hate* hospital food!"

"Seifer..."

"I...I don't really know Squall..." Seifer said, frowning. They were both silent for some time. Seifer was fiddling with the sheets,
and suddenly felt Squall's hand on his own. He gripped it and raised his face. "Squall! I'm scared! I-" The door was suddenly
opened, and the doctor stepped in. They were both startled.

"So how are we doing here? I presume you are ready for the procedure?" Squall stood up from the bed. There was a nurse with
the doc. She walked to the windows and closed the dark curtains. The nurse went to the light switch and dimmed the room.
Squall was slightly confused as he watched the woman.

"I am sorry, but I will have to ask you to leave the room Mr. Leonhart." she said, and motioned Squall to follow her to the
corridor. Squall's brows drew together.

"I-I can't be here when-"

"I'm afraid *not* Mr. Leonhart." the doctor interrupted. "I have to run some test on my patient, so if you would kindly go with
Miss Anderson." Squall opened his mouth to argue, but walked out when the doc shot him an annoyed glance.

"I'll be right here, waiting, Seifer!" he called from the doorway.

"Ok...I'll see you in a moment!....I hope.." Seifer added, and heard the door close.

"Man I hate that guy!" Squall said out loud and sat down on a chair. He saw Quistis walking down the corridor, waving at him.

"Hey Squall! I came as fast as I could!" The blonde girl sat down next to Squall. "Do they already-"

"No, the doctor just went in." Squall answered, before Quistis had even finished her question.

"Oh...Well then, why aren't you in there with him?" she asked, a little confused.

"They *won't* let me Quisty!" Squall said through clenched teeth, balling his fists.

"Oh...Well..I'm sure we'll know soon enough.." The blonde girl leaned back in her chair. "Let's just try to remain calm." she
said, but Squall couldn't stay calm. He stood up and started pacing around. "Squall.." Quistis tried to get the boy to sit down.

"Quistis what the hell am I gonna say to him if the operation was a failure!...I really don't know what I'm gonna do if-"

"Squall! Sit down." the girl said firmly. "You don't yet know what the results are, so there's no use in worrying about that now."

"Ahh...I guess you're right..." Reluctantly Squall sat down and leaned back in the chair.

The heavy curtains were closed, and the lighting in the room was dim. The doctor sat next to Seifer.

"Now, Mr. Almasy, I will first remove the main bandage and inspect how well the swelling has faded. Then we will take off the
patches from your eyelids and see if the operation was a success. I trust you are prepared for negative results." Seifer just
nodded. "Ok, now, if you'd sit up a little more...Thank you. Let's begin shall we." the doc began to unwrap the bandages.
Seifer's heart was pounding in his chest. He was sure the nurse could see it through his garment, like in one of those cartoons.
He felt scared, and his mind was blank. The main bandages were quickly removed, and the doctor was using his fingers to feel
the skin that surrounded Seifer's still covered eyes.

"I see...oh yes...The swelling is gone, but the skin is still slightly red. I thought it too would be gone by now." He motioned the
nurse to turn off the small lamp above Seifer's bed. "I will now remove the final bandages. When I tell you, open your eyes.
And remember to do it slowly, for *if* the results are positive, even the dim lighting in the room will hurt your eyes. You
haven't used them for a while, so it will be almost like staring straight into the sun."

Seifer felt the doctor remove the patches from his eyes. The air felt cold against his closed eyelids. The doctor glanced at the
nurse and gave her a nod. "Ok, you can open your eyes now." The man finally said. Seifer felt a slight wave of panic rush
through his body.

'I...I don't want to...'

"Mr. Almasy?" the doctor called. "You can open your eyes." Seifer's eyes slowly fluttered open. The doctor was looking at him
with concentration. The moment the blonde's eyes were open, he immediately shut them.

"Ahhhhh!!! It burns!" he cried out in agony.

"Try again." the doctor ordered. Seifer felt like the muscles around his eyes were fighting as hard as they could, to keep his
eyelids down. "Mr. Almasy, try again."

"I *am* trying god dammit!" Seifer snarled. He forced his eyes open and gasped, when he realised he could see, though his
vision was blurry. He could see the doctor in front of him, through narrowed eyes.

"Nurse, give me my gloves and the small lamp." Seifer was blinking, trying to adjust to the new feeling. His eyes burned like he
was staring into a fireplace from inch's distance. The doctor leaned forward and held Seifer's head still. "I can see the operation
was a success after all...I must admit, I am surprised." the man said, pointing into Seifer's eyes with a small flashlight.

"Nhhhh! Hey that *hurts*!" Seifer whined. His eyes had been open less than a minute, and already there was someone pointing
at him with a damn bright lamp-thing.

"Hold still Almasy." the doctor said, a little annoyed, and gripped Seifer's face more firmly. "Ah, yes, the pupils are responding
as expected...though the other one is slightly more contracted..." The man was pulling Seifer's eyes open, making the blonde grit
his teeth. Finally he let go of the boy's face and Seifer rubbed his cheeks, glaring at the doctor. The man covered Seifer's right
eye.

"How can you see with your left eye only?"

"Ahh..just fine."

The doctor switched eyes. "And the right one?"

"Fine with that too.." The nurse handed the doctor some coloured cards.

"Now we will test how you can discern colours." he said, and showed Seifer a card after another. "Good. Nurse, increase the
amount of light." The nurse worked with the switch, making the light slightly brighter. "We will now gradually increase the
amount of light in the room, and see how your eyes react." Seifer started to blink his eyes and the doctor leaned froward again,
gripping Seifer's face.

"The tear-ducts seem to produce a large amount of fluid." the man said, glancing at the nurse. She handed him a small cottony
peg. Seifer's eyes went wide.

"H-hey! What's *that* for!" He pulled his face back.

"I need to take a sample of the secretion your eyes are producing." The doc carefully wiped Seifer's eye and handed the peg to
the nurse.

"Are you done already?" Seifer asked, sounding impatient.

"Soon Mr. Almasy. There are still a few things I need to explain. First of all, your eyes will get used to the light during the day.
Also, the problem with the tear- ducts is only temporary and is caused from the operation." The doctor stood up.

"The red on your skin will fade eventually and your vision will sharpen in few hours of time. You are free to leave when you
feel your eyes are ready for it. Nurse, leave the curtains closed, but increase the amount of light slightly." the man said, and
started to dictate some medical terms into a recorder.

"Um...Could I have a mirror?" Seifer asked the woman.

"Of course." she said, handing Seifer a small mirror from her pocket. The blonde slowly brought the object in front of his face
and glanced in it. His eyes locked and kept staring into the small mirror in his hand. Seifer touched his face with his other hand,
and stroked the red skin around his eyes. He hadn't seen his reflection in four months. It almost felt like the person looking back
from the mirror was someone else...not Seifer himself.

'Damn Almasy! You look like shit!' he blinked his eyes. 'Just look at that overgrown hair...Squall never said anything about
it...and I need to shave...Man! I look like freaking Mr. Skeleton!' Seifer's hair was a little overgrown. He'd been combing it
back, just like he used to before, but hadn't realised it had grown so much. There were red rings around his slightly swollen
eyes, and his face still showed signs of the loss of weight he had experienced weeks ago. The blonde threw the blanket aside
and lowered his gaze down to look at his body. The nurse was observing Seifer, a bit amused. Seifer's eyes went wide as he
noted how much his muscles had stunted.

'Shit! I need a work out!' The nurse increased the brightness of the light again, making Seifer blink.

"Ok, I have an operation at noon, so if you'll excuse me." the doctor said, leaving the room, the nurse following him. Seifer was
left alone. He stood up and walked to the window. The blonde opened the curtain slightly to take a look at the outside world.

"Aaa-aah!" Seifer cried out. The moment his eyes met with the bright light flowing from behind the curtain, he yanked the cloth
to cover the window. He stood there for a while, blinking his hurting eyes.

"Shit...guess I'm not ready for that yet." Seifer wandered around the room, looking at everything he could see; the bed, the
sheets, the sofa. 'Ah, the bathroom!' The blonde made his way into the small bathroom.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Squall bounced up the moment he saw the doctor come out from Seifer's room. "So, what are the results?" he asked impatiently.

"Well, I must say that I wasn't expecting this, but it seems the operation was a success." Squall felt like his legs were gonna fail
him.

'Seifer can see....Seifer can *see*!' The brunette let out a sigh, feeling relieved and happy. He suddenly embraced Quistis who
was standing behind him, making the girl laugh out loud.

"Oh come on Squall! Why are you still here! Go see him already!" she smiled at the boy, who looked like he was going to burst
from happiness. Squall quickly made it into Seifer's room, and closed the door behind him. He noted the bed was empty and
heard the toilet flush. Squall made his way to the large sofa and sat down. He felt like a kid on a Christmas eve. The bathroom
door was finally opened and Seifer came out, looking around with narrowed eyes.

"Hey you.." Squall purred. Seifer turned around, a little startled, and was frozen when he saw the boy. He couldn't manage to
get any words out. All he could do was stare. Seifer was holding his breath as Squall slowly walked to him and raised his face
to meet the blonde's green eyes. They stood there in silence, just looking at each other. A small whimper escaped Seifer's lips.
His face was showing so many emotions at the same time, Squall couldn't really tell what the older boy was feeling. He gave
the blonde a shy smile, causing Seifer to let out a cry. Squall was a little confused, when Seifer suddenly grabbed him and held
him against his heaving chest so tight, it almost hurt.

"Squall...Squall...." Seifer kept whispering, and slowly leaned back. He brought his hand up to brush the wisps of hair off from
the brunette's eyes. "Do that again..."

"What?" Squall asked, a little confused.

"Smile for me again Squall, please.." Seifer whispered, staring at the brunette intently. Squall felt a small blush creep onto his
face, as he raised his lips into a beautiful smile. There was a wide smile on Seifer's face too, as he watched Squall, who was
now trying to hide his flushed face.

"You don't know how happy I am right now Squall.."

"I think I do." the younger boy said, and embraced Seifer again.
