How could you?
Selphie and Jewel went on their way making sure they had everything and found out to their surprise that everything that they needed was in Timber. Anyway in another week the Garden Festival would begin and either the men would be there or they wouldn’t. They set out on their journey and walked to Garden. Selphie and Jewel were exhausted from these past few days of events. The death of Mrs. Dincht, meeting Leona and experiencing why she was different from everyone else, and lastly leaving the men, which hurt the worst of all.
Their walk wasn’t as long as they suspected and ended, actually with no monster encounters or anything, which was surprising to both of the young women.
They would wait for the men….yes they would…and pray they would be okay and safe.
That’s the only thing they could do…

After the incident with the murder of Mrs. Dincht, Zell could not bring himself to look upon his mother once again. It hurt the young blond in more ways then one. His ‘mother’ adopted him and gave him a roof over his head, she gave him unconditional love and affection and anything he needed and wanted, she provided for him…and now she was gone…forever.
Picking up the fallen pieces of his soul, he mustered up all his courage and proceeded into the house that he lived in for so many years of his life time.
He was surprised and flabbergasted to see the forever-still form of his late ‘mother’ covered up with a white blanket and a single red rose on top of herself. A note lied on top of her with the rose and he quickly went over and picked up the red rose in one hand and the note in the other and began to read it.
I’m sorry, Zell. Rest in peace, Mrs.Dincht. - Leona
Zell read over the note a few more times and smiled, tears rolling down his cheeks. “Thanks Leona…”
He stared at his limp form of his mother and sighed. His eyes widened and a something clicked inside his mind.
~~~~~~~Flashback~~~~~~~~~
“Zell, I want to tell you something come sit with me…” Mrs.Dincht asked with a smile playing on her lips. They were out by the dock and Mrs.Dincht sat on a bench overlooking the water, the sun grazing her figure. She wasn’t old at the time, but not so young either. Younger Zell was attempting to squish a fly that was pestering him, when he heard his mother’s voice speak to him. He rushed over and sat next to her. A warm feeling tickling him inside. He was indeed happy.
“Yes mommy?”
“Zell when I die…I want to be in this ocean…at this dock.” She glanced down at him to see a confused expression and she again gazed at the ocean. “Let me tell you a story.” she patted her lap, motioning for him to sit on her lap. He concured and placed himself comfortably on her lap and waited for her to begin her tale, though his mind reeled with questions, he sat there quietly and waited.
“ Well this is the tale of how I met your father.” she said with a small smile on her lips. “ I was sixteen at the time and I loved the ocean just as much as I do now. Your father was a sly and charming man and had the way with the ladies at times.” she giggled. “ I hated him for the longest time and we both attended to the same school. We never talked and when we did it was because he needed a pencil or a pen to write with.”
“Well one day, I was sitting on the edge of the dock and he appeared there. I didn’t know at the time, he was actually watching me the whole time! Anyway, I was sitting near the edge when suddenly a gust of wind blew my hat off my head and into the water. I gasped in horror because the hat was my late mother’s. I broke down and gasped once again when I heard a splash and looked to see your father, diving down to get it for me.” she sighed and wiped tears that begun to stur. “ After that, we were the best of friends and everything was going perfectly when suddenly out of nowhere, your father kissed me. We were at this spot, enjoying the scenery as the sun slowly descended down on both of us and that’s when he did it. It was so unexpecting that I- out of pure reflex- pushed him into the water. I laughed as he climbed back up and tackled me to the ground and again kissed me. It was so romantic. We even did things here that your much to young to hear.” she sighed once again and hugged the younger Zell. “So now you know…I want to be here and in the water. This Zelly is where he also died. In a fight…but that’s for when your older!” she said with a cheery tone in her voice to mask the pain.
Zell nodded and hugged his mother. “I’ll do whatever you want, mommy!” he said happily.
“I know you will…”
Zell and Mrs.Dincht embraced and then Zell went back to being energetic as ever. Smiling, she watched the sun slowly descend down like it did when she was with her lover. She waited until darkness took over and she stood.
“Zell lets go home.”
~~~~~~~~~~End of Flashback~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’ll do it, mommy…” Zell whispered and put the note and red rose in his pocket and gingerly picked the corpse of his mother and carried it out the door. He knew the others were waiting out at the entrance to Balamb, but he knew this was more important. Tears streamed down his face as he apporached the docks. He couldn’t believe he was going to do this, but he knew he had to.
He looked over the edge of the docks and knew the only way to get her in was to drop her. As much as it hurt him, he did it and let out a cry when he heard the splash. His body quivered form the spasms that pervaded through his body. He took in a few deep breath and sighed, calming himself. He took out the red rose that was in his pocket and gazed at it. He dropped it in the water and bowed his head.
“Rest in peace, mommy…”
He turned with one last look at the rose that floated on top of the water and walked away, going toward the others so they could be on their way and find Squall and the killer…

She smiled with pleasure as she felt the wind beneath her wings and the clouds above her head. She loved to fly. Transforming into a bird was her only thought on how to get to Trabia ruins. She had be flying for a while and she was getting tired, but that didn’t stop her.
Almost there! She told herself over and over.
Stop…
She cawed as a pain pervaded through her body like no other. Her wings became numb and pained swelled through everything. She began to plummet toward the vast sea.
Help me…

“Why………..are& #8230;..you…….hurting her?” a voice low and pained asked, softly. It was so dark and pain pervaded through his body. He was chained to the wall and he finally had gotten used to the chains that was tightly around his wrist and legs. This reminded him of something, but pain numbed his mind and he couldn’t think of what it was. He had just regained consciousness and he had a huge headache. The last thing he COULD remember was that he was being whipped by someone, yet he did not know who. Just when he thought his question was going to go unanswered a voice spoke.
“Because…” the voice said with a bitter tone, it was a male’s voice and it was low with annoyance, as if the question had annoyed him. He continued anyway. “She is my ticket to power unimaginable!” Now the tone was cruel and evil. “She may not know it, but her powers could change the world!”
The pain was now again getting to him and he took a deep breath before replying. He didn’t even know where he was. “She’s can’t be that important!” the pained voice spoke. “She’s…….not the…..only…….sorceress out in the world….” He had seen the group and Leona on a screen that glowed in the darkness and was the only thing he could make out, besides the figure that stood beside it. He knew who’s cousin she was and that she was a sorceress and that she could transform into different things like animals. “Please stop hurting her…”
“Squall! Squall! Squall! She is not what you think!” the other eviler voice chuckled, softly. “She’s one of the only living sorceress’ that have the gift of the ancient people!”
“Ancient people?” Squall asked. “Who-”
“Oh yes…” the figure in the dark said in a sigh. “You know nothing, so you can understand nothing.” The voice sighed and Squall could see a white grin, coming from the figure. Squall jerked as a sudden pain whipped at his forehead, making him double over, which made the chains cut into his wrist more. He felt the blood ooze down his forehead and he tasted the acid as it seeped into his lips. He almost gagged, but willed himself not to show the evil person that he was weak.
“The ancient peoples were ones that had control upon anything! Such as minds, bodies, animals anything they dreamed of doing! They could transform into animals, turn invisible to the naked eye, anything was possible with them.” the figure smirked, as he watched the screen that revealed Leona plummeting to her death. “You see her mother was a full blooded Ancient that had ran away from her time and death. She came to the past like one of our rulers named Ultimetica, you should remember her am I correct?” He snickered when he heard Squall moan from the pain. “ Anyway, her mother had no money, no shelter, nothing until she met Leona’s father, Lance Loire that came to the rescue…” his tone became bitter as he said the name. “They fell in love at first sight….so to speak….”
“As you can see the color of her eyes…” the figured turned to flash dark glowing amber eyes toward Squall. “ Mean that we are different, but to the Ancients, these eyes show royalty, Squall. Royalty that is power and Leona’s mother was a princess. One of the only princess’ left because of one being…and they were you humans…” Now his tone was bitter. “ If Leona’s mother did not flee than there might have been Ancients still ruling the world.” He growled and narrowed his beautiful amber eyes at Squall. “Yet, a war with Ancients and humans…” He spat out the last part with dripping bitterness. “…was going on at the time. Humans were taking the princess’ and torturing them one by one. Torture consisted of beatings, raping, anything you can imagine to fulfill their desires and pleasures they did. I guess I understand why Rebecca left, but if she didn’t flee and joined with Ultimetica maybe Leona would be ruling right now, eh?
“Rebecca, Leona’s mother, never said good-bye to her dying father, the king of the Ancients, King Kane, meaning warrior, golden, beautiful! Yes, but she left him to die…one of the greatest kings to rule the planet! Anyway, Ancients can do anything, if they know how to use their gift, so she transported herself to the past, hoping for a better life.
“She was the only Ancient in this planet.”
Squall groaned. “But how? This is the past? Aren’t there Ancients in the past?”
“ Every thousand years the Ancients all die out, until the next thousand years come into play. So keep in mind this was during the period with no Ancients. Going back to the story. She was the only Ancient left on the planet. She sensed no powers of the Ancient spirits. She called out to them in mind, but nothing responded back.”
“How do you know all this?” Squall asked, softly, but loud enough to interrupt the figure. He picked up his head, weakly as the man laughed. Laughed at his heart’s content. When he finally stopped, the evil grin appeared back into the darkness, flashing at Squall. The Amber eyes turned a crimson color, which scared the shit out of Squall. What was he dealing with here?
“I am the studier of the Ancients and the only one living that knows all the secrets and dear Leona’s…” Squall grimaced and felt whip lashing all over his body and finally passed out. Thinking of only one thing…Cousin…Leona…

Entering Garden, they reported to Quistis and Rinoa, which were in the Quad continuing to prepare for the festival.
“Rinoa! Quistis! Guess what!” Selphie dashed over to them and grinned ear-to-ear.
“Welcome back, Selphie did you get everything?” Quistis asked with little concern, concentrating on the task ahead, but in her eyes were pain. She missed Seifer dearly and needed him.
Rinoa smiled and hugged her friend. “You’re later then what you told us, but I’m glad your safe!” In her eyes was the same lost. She wanted Squall and was worried above all that he was hurt or dying somewhere and she wasn’t there to help him.
Jewel came up with a box of supplies. Everything they needed to decorate and continue on with the preparations. She was smiling and her eyes lit up from all the people working on this one event. It was almost ready! They would be done in time, she just knew it!
Selphie took a big breath and began. “Well see, we went to get the supplies, but we met Zell, Seifer, and Irvine and this girl named Leona Loire. She’s Squall’s cousin!” So Selphie told the whole story with detail and a big grin on her face, but when she got to the part about Mrs.Dincht, she frowned and then she talked about the way she calmed Leona when she was a wolf.
“You girls must have had a wild time.” Quistis said with widened eyes behind those glasses she wore. “Poor Zell…hopefully he’ll be okay.”
“He was really upset…” Jewel replied, a pang of sadness in her voice. “It took me awhile to calm him down.
“Squall’s cousin came?” Rinoa asked. “I guess Laguna got my call.”
“She’s awesome!” Selphie grinned and bounced around with all the energy that was waiting to explode. “She’s pretty, smart and she’s a sorceress!”
Rinoa froze and tensed, becoming very quiet. When she finally answered, she was a little shaky. Her eyes widened and she took a deep breath. “Sorceress?”
“Yeah! She can transform into animals like a wolf! She’s really nice, but something is a mystery about her.” Selphie replied with a hint of seriousness in her voice. “Something she doesn’t know about.”
“Yeah! She did have something mysterious about herself!” Jewel added, concurring with Selphie.
“Hmmm…” Rinoa though out loud. “I’ll talk to Laguna and ask him.”
“Anyway, lets get started!” Quistis smiled and as she assigned everyone something to do she pulled Selphie over and smiled, her eyes lit up as she spoke. “How was Seifer?” she asked as if she was asking her best friend about a crush.
Selphie sighed. “Mean, Quisty! He was mean to Leona.”
Quistis sighed. “That man…”
~~~~~~~~~~
She awoke with a start on something cold. Her eyes snapped open and she rubbed them, slightly. She yawned and took a look around. It was completely dark. Everywhere she looked it was dark! Her nose detected a smell of blood and her head ached with pain, she clutched it, rubbing her temples, gingerly, willing away the headache. When she tried to move her legs, pain again pervaded through her body and she cried out. Something definitely felt broken.
She felt around and gingerly touched her leg. She whimpered, silently and gave a long shaky sigh.
“Cure…”
Instantly, her leg was cured and the pain lifted, but she froze and her heart began to pound in her chest. She wasn’t the one that cured herself. Suddenly, she gasped as she felt a warm hand gingerly touch her cheek.
“Leona…” the voice whispered, hot breath collided with her face as the voice spoke, making her flinch.
“Who-”
“You don’t remember me?”
Suddenly, a blinding light turned on and Leona had to cover her eyes from it. Once she opened her eyes and they got focused, she turned her head to hear a snapping sound. Her heart pounded even harder in her chest, threatening to burst. She gasped as a man appeared before her, tall and tan. Her had raven black hair that fell behind him, flowing onto his back, gracefully. His dark amber eyes shone from the light’s rays. He wore a black cloak that covered himself, entirely. He grinned, showing her his beautiful teeth and his charming grin. He grew up so much.
“LEO!” She jumped up and embraced him, tightly. “Big brother! I thought you were dead…” she buried her face in his chest and sighed, happily. All these years, it felt so good to see him again.
“You thought wrong, my dear sister.” he replied, stroking her hair. “You know nothing as well sister…”
She backed away and gave him a confused look.” What are you talking about?”
“So many lies, Leona.”
“Where have you been Leo?” she asked, her tone was flat. “Why haven’t you shown me yourself for so long? Why-”
“Does it matter?” Leo asked in a fiery tone.
“Leo…” Leona studied him, closely. “You’ve changed Leo…”
Your eyes were never dark, but bright and sunny and you never wore just black, but red and white and more colors than the darkness you have gotten yourself into. What happened to my big brother? Why are you so cold?
“So has he…” Leo grinned, evilly, amused. He pointed to his prisoner that was chained, cruelly to the blood stained wall. His brown hair was ruffled and stuck up from the blood that dried in it. Blood ran down his forehead and into his mouth and down his chin. That was a fresh wound, she could tell and she felt her forehead. Leo must have healed her. She grimaced in disgust as blood was all over her cousin’s white shirt now a crimson acid red. A puddle of blood was underneath him and the blood that dripped from his forehead, fell to the ground making a sickly splash into the blood puddle. Leona took a step back and gasped.
“Meet our cousin, Squall Leonheart, son of our Uncle Laguna Loire.” Annouced Leo, a tone of amusement grazed his voice. Leona’s heart twisted with sickness and pain.
“What did you do to him, Leo….” She was speechless and she was panting for breath, willing the sickness to go away. Willing all of this to go away, but when she closed her eyes and wished for it, she was disappointed when she opened them to see Squall still there and her brother, grinning with approval. “How could you…?”
