chapter 6

Seifer quickly walked into the apartment and went straight for his room and lied down. Irvine came in minutes after standing in his room doorway.

"Ya know you're a real ass sometimes Almasy, but your a damn good boxer and friend, that's the only reason I keep you around. Don't disappoint me now when we've come so far. I know what you're doing and you need to cut it out. Getting plastered and high ain't the way to deal with your problems," He paused hesitating to continue.

Seifer didn't move and Irvine thought he might already be asleep. "Well you can always talk to me partner." He pulled his hat off and scratched his head leaving the room closing the door behind him.

When the door closed Seifer sighed and rolled on his back staring at the ceiling.

Irvine went into the little kitchen area and opened the freezer. "Damn lazy asses can't even get to a store anymore." He said slamming the door shut then opened the refrigerator. "Ah ha," He pulled out a bowl of salsa and a bottle of beer then closed the door. He went to the microwave and heated up the bowl, while that was happening he pulled a bag of nacho chips from a cabinet.

"Meal of the champs heh heh." He took his dinner to the couch and got the remote looking for cartoons to watch.

...............................

Zell and Squall were setting down their luggage in the empty apartment they'd just rented. "Home sweet home." Zell said looking around. "So when do we get some furniture?" He asked looking at Squall. He took a deep breath before answering. "Now if you feel like walking more and lugging it back here, we don't have enough money to hire movers."

Zell looked down frowning "Yeah, yeah I can do that I've got energy to burn lets go." Zell was already on his way out the door and Squall slowly followed.

At Deling's mall Zell quickly made his way to the furniture department full of pep and excitement. "Hurry up slow boy." Zell said trotting backwards. Squall waved his hand motioning Zell to go ahead of him and he'd catch up.

Zell shrugged and turned back around. "Cool an escalator!" Zell said running to it when he got on the people stared at him funny but he ignored it and waved at Squall, still walking at an even pace. Zell made it to the next floor and ran around to take the escalator back down. He got off and ran to Squall pushing him towards it. "Gods by the time you get there I'd of had everything picked out, paid for and the whole apartment set up by now." He said laughing a little. Squall couldn't help but smile a little at the joke and they made it back to the escalator.

When they finally found the furniture department Zell ran inside almost knocking an old couple over. He was as excited as a kid in a toy store. The couple looked annoyed after Zell then stared at Squall who paid them no never mind.

"Squall over here!," Zell shouted and when he joined him he pointed out a black leather couch. "Just your type huh?" He said jokingly. Squall looked it over "It is nice but expensive." Squall said and they kept walking and checking the price tags on everything they might want.

"What about this one?" Squall said to Zell who was a few feet away. He looked up from what he was doing and went over to Squall. He looked at the plain black couch, it was small enough for two and cheap. "Yeah lets get it." He finally said and as soon as he did a sales man came over to them.

"May I help you gentlemen?" He said looking at the two of them. "Uh yeah we want this," Zell said uncomfortably not liking the way the man stared at them. The sales guy looked at the couch. "Hm nice choice, just moving in to a new place?" He asked. "Does it matter can we get the couch?" Squall said bitterly, also noticing the looks they received and the distance the man kept from them.

"Ehem well of course you can if you can afford it that is considering-" He got cut off by a boy "Uh I'll take over from here." He said "But the commission." The older man said. The younger dark haired boy pushed him away "I'll split it with you, bye" He walked back over to the two of them.

"Sorry about that he's kind of you know." The boy said. "Yeah we know." Zell said. "Hi I'm Nida Kamiyo, friendly sales boy." He extended his hand to Squall, who just stared at it. "I'm Zell Dincht this is my friend Squall." He said taking the boys hand himself. "Don't mind him." "Oh ok, well if you want this chair you have to sign this receipt and we can have it sent to your place in no time." Nida said.

"How soon?" Squall asked "Oh really soon, we have a store policy to deliver when purchased unless the customer says otherwise."

"So we don't have to move it in ourselves?" Zell said more so to Squall. "No we do that too, that's why we're the best around. You guys aren't from here are you?" Nida asked Zell. "No just got in, for the championship league, boxing ya know." Zell said demonstrating a few punches and Squall stood back and sighed.

"Boxing cool, wish I could do that, I only got this job to pay for my own place, got a discount too. I'm still in school, you?" "Yeah I am" Zell said. "Great that means you'll be going to Galbadia, I'll look for you Monday." "Cool." Zell said.

"Ehem," Squall cleared his throat. "Can we get back to this?" He said pointing with his head to the couch. "Oh sorry, well fill this out and I can show you guys some other cheap stuff if you need me too." "Great!" Zell said and Squall took the clipboard filling it out.

After that Nida took them around the store, him and Zell casually talking as Squall looked at the furniture. Once they found everything they needed they headed to the register.

"We have your address and everything, so you can go and we'll be there within the hour, once the truck is loaded and all. Thanks for shopping at Del-living furniture store we hope we've filled all your housing needs." Nida said and they looked at him funny. "Sorry I know its dumb but its required." "Oh, well thanks Nida. See ya around." Zell said and Squall put his hand up as some kind of wave and they left the store.

"What was with that guy?" Zell asked and Squall trying to hold back a smile just shook his head. "I mean with all his signage and sloganeering, ha ha." He laughed and Squall laughed quietly too as they walked back to their rental car.

Just as Nida said the movers were there in the hour and just finished getting everything inside the apartment about half an hour later. Squall paid the movers and closed the door.

When he turned back around he and Zell sighed at the same time. "This is really happening isn't it, I can't believe it. I'm out on my own, got my own place and already made a friend at a school I haven't gone to yet. I don't know what to do next." Zell said flopping down on the newly bought recliner.

"Why don't you go out and celebrate, look around the city." Squall said sitting on the couch. "What without you, I thought we were in this together shouldn't we both go out?" "We are and as much as I want to my body's saying rest, but I'll fix this place up before you get back."

Zell thought for a moment 'Without Squall is like without Squall, where would I go, what would I do? Come on Zell its time you really got out on your own, yeah I can do that I can handle anything that comes my way. I'll show Squall and my Ma and everyone else.' He stood up abruptly

"Ok, I'm gonna do it. I'm goin' out to celebrate, live it up." He said with a finger in the air. "No drinking, no drugs of any kind and don't take anything from strangers not even money. Make sure you have money for the bus, cab or a phone. Try not to get into any fights unless you have no choice got it? And do not pick up anyone." Squall said standing in front of Zell arms crossed. "Yes Ma." Zell smiled and hugged him, Squall pushed him away and gave him some money.

"Thanks man, I won't be out too late don't worry." Zell went in his room to change into something warmer and came out in minutes. "Sure you don't wanna come?" He asked half way out the door. Squall nodded "Go on and be careful." Zell nodded back and left the room, Squall stood looking around at all they'd bought trying to figure out where to put it all.

Out in the hall Zell was getting off the elevator to the first floor just as Irvine was getting on. He stopped him before he left. "Hey kid don't I know you?" Irvine said trying to remember. "Uh maybe I was at the registration when you stormed through going ahead of me." Zell said tightening up.

"Right, your with Squall Leonhart right," Zell nodded. "Well hey then any friend of his is a friend of mine." Irvine held out his hand and Zell shook it slowly.

"Irvine Kinneas, resident boxing coach to the regional champion." He tipped his hat down to Zell. "Really you're a coach, like Squall? Well I'm Zell, new resident boxer from Balamb." Irvine nodded "So where you staying kid?" Irvine asked leaning against the elevator door so it wouldn't close. "Here, 3rd floor 15C." 'Damnit why am I telling him all this, he says he's Squall's friend but it didn't seem like it before. First night out alone and I'm already screwing up without even leaving the building.' Zell thought.

"Well hey I'm on the fifth floor 13E stop by sometime ok." Irvine said standing up to get on the elevator. "Oh ok, see ya around." Zell said. 'Well he can't be bad then unless that room numbers fake, oh well Squall can handle himself.'

"Goin out alone?," Zell nodded "Well be careful its crazy out there. Hey tell your coach I said hey when you see him." The door closed on Irvine and Zell watched it go up.

"That was nuts, time to have some fun." He said and left the building.

..............................

Irvine goes back inside his apartment quietly laughing to himself. Not noticing Seifer lying on the couch on his stomach, he had one leg hanging off the side. He was listening to a walkman, Linkin Park.

When he noticed Irvine walk in he pulled the earphones off. "Where were you?, again" He asked even though his tone said he didn't really care.

Irvine stopped where he was and looked over at him. His happy mood immediately turning sour. "Takin out the trash, like you should have done along time ago." He said and walked over to the lazy boy chair sitting down.

"Why don't you get out and do something with yourself." He said blandly. Seifer lifted his head from the couch. "Like what find another coach?" "Funny, I mean like go out and have fun stop lazin' around here so much." Irvine waved his hands in the air.

"You should talk, and why are you trying to get rid of me, got some fuck buddy coming over?" He sat up. "No not really. Hey it was just a suggestion you don't have to go anywhere." "No, you're right besides I don't feel like sitting around with you all night on a Saturday." He got up and went to his room for a jacket.

"Hey remember what I said before." Irvine warned "About what?" Seifer said coming out of the room pulling his last sleeve on. "You know damn well what I mean." "Yeah yeah give me a break," He grabbed his walkman then went to open the door "Don't wait up." He left the room. "I won't." Irvine said to the door then went to sit on the couch himself.

"Now when should I visit my old friend? I'll give him a minute to settle in." He chuckled to himself.
