Chapter 4: Challenges and (almost) escaping
- - - - - - - -
Sephiroth had come down to the labs to do his routine physical, as required by all ShinRa for all SOLDIERs. But instead of the 'good' doctor' taking notes and taunting him, there was a mere assistant to call him in and get him started, nervously noting all the vitals and putting him through the usual paces.  When Hojo did finally come, an hour after the set appointment time, he was in absolutely FOUL temper and sporting a FANTASTIC black eye as well as some bruising along his left cheek set off by bent glasses and his ponytail askew.  It was all Sephiroth could do to hide a smile at Hojo's condition.

"This is a change doctor, usually it's you waiting for me."

A withering look was shot in the General's direction, before the shrill voice told him, "I AM a member of the board and head of the science department, things do crop up occasionally." then he turned his attention to the assistant, "You there! Did you note his heart rate before beginning him?"

"Yes doctor."  The assistant then proceeded to hand over the chart and take a step back, allowing Hojo to resume his usual place.

"What happened doctor?  You look rather roughed up."  Hojo's lips curled slightly in an unconscious action at his other specimen's ingratitude.  Most human females would be be dying to be declared worthy to bear Sephiroth's child.  But none of them were, all too weak either physically or mentally, except this one.  Foolish, foolish girl.

"A specimen was uncooperative earlier.  Little damage done, never fret."

"I am not fretting at all."  On the contrary, Sephiroth wanted to meet the 'specimen' that had done it and shake their hand, or if was an animal, give them a nice treat.

"Of course, you're above such human failings... a slip of the tongue."

"I agree particularly where you're concerned professor."

"Watch your own tongue, boy." Was the cold response matched by an equally cold glare.  Hojo was in NO mood to tolerate his prize specimen's attitude.

"I was merely agreeing with you, what harm is there in that?"  The inquiry was asked innocently enough as the general was directed to the exam table. He wasn't fooling anyone, and he knew it.

"Don't think to play that game with me Sephiroth." Hojo called him out, "I let you have a long leash because SOLDIER and the president demand it, but I can draw it back and see to it you behave better." There was a brief pause as Hojo allowed the assistant to escape before putting Sephiroth back in his place.  Or rather, attempting to.

"So willful and insolent since your precious 'friends' fled the coop.  I told you, you are not human Sephiroth. Things like friendship or love are not obtainable. Better to take what you have now and be content." Sephiroth fingers reflexively dug into the sides of the table at the slight to Genesis Rhapsodos, his lover as well as best friend, and Angeal Hewley who was now deceased, the General's other best friend. True he was angry, angry at them both for leaving as they did, but Hojo was in no position to judge them.
"I was more content before."  Genesis to hold in the dark nights or after an appointment with the professor and make it better.  Angeal to spar with during the day and remind him of honor and `dreams.  Colors to Sephiroth's previously sterile world.
"And yet they left you behind, as was inevitable. Even your supposed paramour."  Hojo pointed out, pulling out a needle for the usual blood work.  Sephiroth did his best not to look away.  This was a battle of wills now... and he was going to take Hojo down a peg.

"Those weren't the friends I once knew anymore, You were not stricken with a degenerative condition, you have no right to judge them."  Hojo's lips curled in contempt.

"Hollander was a pathetic excuse for a scientist and his defective specimens only showed that point.  Be grateful you had a scientist of higher caliber watching over you, my boy."  With that cold statement, the cold of the needle was plunged into Sephiroth's arm, triggering a slight wince.

"That depends on your definition of caliber."  Sephiroth felt emboldened, somehow. Perhaps it was from the knowledge that someone else had fought back, that it was possible to inflict physical injury on this man.

Hojo for his part seemed unfazed by the slight, "A superior specimen, head of the department and board member for 20 years because I avoided all the entanglements and distractions of my predecessors.  All my projects have born fruit in some way. Now if I could replicate my success with you, it would ensure my immortality.  A pity you don't have any progeny..."

"The one flaw in your design." Sephiroth normally would not talk about such intimate things, least of all with Hojo, but a chance to poke holes in the other man's ego was worth it, "I have little desire to procreate, in fact I had no desire for sexual activity until I met Genesis. Now whose fault was that?" Sephiroth didn't even bother to add that even if he HAD been interested in being a father, Hojo would be kept as far away from the child (or children) as possible. Hojo clenched his jaw and his grip tightened around the plunger of the needle.  The only thing between Sephiroth and a SEVERE punishment was the knowledge he did in fact have Sephiroth's progeny safely hidden away in the labs.

"There are more ways to procreate then by rutting with a female.  Not that we wouldn't find you a suitable one."

"I have no interest in what you would find." And that was probably why he leaned towards men.  Any woman would have to be 'approved' because of the possibility of children.  With a man, so long as he was clean and legal age, Sephiroth was free to do was he pleased.  But Hojo had a trick up his sleeve.

"Not even say... your little guide in Nibelheim?"

"What does she have to do with anything?" Sephiroth asked raising an irritated eyebrow. Tifa was a nice girl, with a solid reputation as a fighter.   But she would also bore him.

"You two made a pretty picture together.   I'm surprised she was able to get you to take a picture at all."

"We had an agreement."

"Oh?  And what would be worth it to Sephiroth to suffer even a moment of a fan?"

"None of your business."

"Testy answer, m'boy"  Hojo returned as he removed the needle with a fair sample of blood.

"A true answer."

"If she means something to you, then it is most certainly my business. YOU are my business Sephiroth.  You've known this since you were a child."

"I am no longer a child, doctor." Was the cool rejoin as Hojo continued with the physical.

"Which is why this attitude is even less tolerable."

"I am acting with an adult independence."

"You belong to me and to ShinRa, in that order.  Your fate is NOT your own to decide Sephiroth."

Tifa was a bit shaky after Hojo finished, injecting her with a blue substance that both burned and chilled, and carted himself off to the Medical facilities.  But she also had meant her vow, Hojo would never again lay a hand on her or the child she now carried, of the she'd make certain.  She'd need to act quickly, and boldly, though, before Hojo could put any new measures in place to prevent her escape.

Not that there was much else he COULD do, really.  Tifa had been paying attention and as near as she could see, all the hallways were the same sterile white narrow corridors with people in white, the building itself a windowless bow.  Or at least the way she was brought was windowless, probably by design.  Even if she got free of her guards, she'd get lost and turned around and just get taken again.

Except, Gaia seemed to finally remember her, because on their usual way back the elevator was broken, forcing the guards to take Tifa on an alternate route.  As they were coming down a new corridor, Tifa glimpsed on her right a window that looked out into a courtyard of some kind.

Tifa wasted no time, or a second of her new adrenaline rush. She dug her heels in and then when her guards were moving to shove her along, flung her body forward to send all three of them crashing into the adjacent wall.  Their recovery was quick, but not quick enough. Tifa  cracked one on the helmet forcing him into releasing her. The other one's unprotected gut was nailed with an elbow.  She reached her way out in good time, but became horrified when she found the window locked, and no time to figure it out.   So, with no other choice, Tifa took her hands and feet and slammed full-strength, shattering the glass.

Then, with barely a glance behind her, Tifa hurled herself out the window one second before she could be grabbed.

Once the good doctor was done, Sephiroth went to head back to his duties.  But as he was leaving the science building and walking into the sunlight of the day, he was met with the strange site of someone dropping out of a window several floors up.

Acting on pure battle instinct Sephiroth launched himself into the air and caught the person, landing easily on the cobblestone path the winded through ShinRa's main compound.  No sooner had they landed then the person was struggling to get out of his arms with... surprising strength, though naturally not enough to overcome him.  Still, not wanting to over-stress the frightened soul, he let them out but held fast to a slender wrist.

"Let go of me!"

"Tifa?" Sephiroth asked now having a good look and realizing it was indeed his Nibelheim guide.

"Let me go you monster!" She cried struggling too much to realize who had her.

"Tifa, It's Sephiroth." That gave the struggling young woman pause, breath heaving as she met Sephiroth's cat eyes.

"Please, let me go!  I have to get out of here now!"  her eyes were pleading at her one and only ally in this dark place to do it and give her a chance to get out.

"You're hurt, we have to get you to med bay first." He informed her, seeing the blood on her feet and hands.  Gaia only knew what Hojo had used her for, or forced into her system in the process, that would make her THIS desperate to escape.  A doctor would need to take care of her, and she'd be safer there then anywhere, especially if she was on bed rest.

"I can't go back there!"

"Those cuts are bad, you'll get an infection."

"I'll get much worse if you make me go back." Was the dark reply.

"I doubt that, have you ever seen gangrene or a staph infection?  You could lose a limb."

"If you're not going to help then let. Go!"  Tifa gave a rather violent movement to get out of his grip, and managed to get a hand free to Sephiroth's surprise.

"Stop this!" Sephiroth declared with a cold edge creeping into his voice, "You're only hurting yourself."

"No!" Sephiroth saw no choice but to jerk her towards him and wrap his arms around her body, pinning her arms to her sides.

"I said stop it! You're making it worse." Tifa began to try and elbow him, squirming as much as she could, as little good as it did her.  She couldn't believe it, she had thought maybe Sephiroth was innocently involved, maybe... but now.

"General Sephiroth!" came a cry and to Tifa's horror, her guards had made it out of the building and were running over.

"Lyndon, Hawkins! Help me get this girl to med lab." Sephiroth ordered, shifting her against her struggles and pulls to keep her pinned to himself while the two guards grabbed her legs and dragged her down to the med unit.

Tifa couldn't believe it, even as they forced a sedative into her arm and her struggles grew weaker and sluggish.  Just before darkness claimed her, she locked eyes with Sephiroth showing her hurt, her anger, and sense of betrayal.
And he just looked calmly back at her, with those green eyes.

Oh what? Like I wasn't give Sephy a chance to enjoy Hojo post-beat down?!
