Chapter 3: Death Just Isn't What it Used to Be
Daniel followed the girl and her horse quietly. He was taking this time to think. So far, his uncle had been right about everything. He began going over what he would tell Ike in his head. These new thoughts didn't seem new at all. It seemed as if he had had them all along.
Daniel looked at Mist. She seemed much cuter than the game had shown. Time had also done well on her figure. The brunette in question felt that she was being watched, and when she turned around to look, the boy was gazing at his feet.
Turning around, Mist said, “I just realized. I told you my name, but you never told me yours.”
“I am Daniel Edwards. I am skilled with an axe and I once worked for the Crimean Royal Guard,” he replied.
Mist looked at him in surprise. “I don't think that anyone's ever mentioned your name to me before,” she said. Daniel didn't reply. He stopped in his tracks. Seeing that Daniel had stopped, Mist halted her horse. “What is it?” she asked.
He threw an axe that had been at his waist into the trees. Mist stared at him, scared and confused. A man with a knife fell to the ground with Daniel's axe in his side. Yes! He thought. Wait, how'd I do that? Daniel pulled the axe out of the assassin and returned it to his waist.
“Why would an assassin be after us?” Mist asked frightened.
“I'll explain later,” He replied. “We must make haste and reach your brother.” Mist made room so that Daniel could ride behind her on the horse. She blushed as he held himself around her waist. Mist urged the horse to go faster. They took off quickly through the woods.
Except for a short encounter with an archer, they reached Mist and Ike's house without resistance. Mist returned her horse to the stable. She opened the front door and let Daniel in. “Ike!” Mist called. “Ike! I'm home! We have a guest! He wishes to see you!”
A blue-haired young man stepped into the room. “Who is it, Mist?” he asked.
Daniel stepped forward. “Lord Ike, I am Daniel Edwards of the Royal Guard,” He stated while bowing.
“Please, there is no need to bow,” Ike replied. “Why have the Royal Guards sent me a messenger?”
Daniel got to his feet. “No, my Lord, I do not know if I am even still part of the Royal Guards,” He stated. “I haven't been to Crimea for over a year until today.”
“So why are you here?” Ike asked bluntly.
“To warn you and all of Crimea,” Dan replied.
“Of what?” Ike continued.
“The Black Knight,” Daniel said. Ike did a slight double take at this.
“But I killed the Black Knight,” Ike stated. “He is dead.”
“Oh dear,” Dan said looking a bit worried. “The Black Knight had been making a resistance army before I left. They had had me kidnapped.”
Ike slammed his hand on the wall. “This can't be possible! I watched that building crush him to bits!”
This troubled Dan also because he knew what had happened. It didn't make sense to him how the Black Knight could have survived. “I don't know how then…”
“We must consult everyone,” Ike said. Ike made to leave the room.
Mist put her hand on Ike's shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “It will be alright,” she assured him. Then she added, “And will he be staying with us?”
She gave a look towards Dan. The boy in question was examining the pictures on the wall.
“Do you have somewhere to stay?” Ike asked Daniel.
Daniel turned to look at him. “No, I do not,” he replied.
“You are welcome to stay here, if you wish,” Ike said.
“That is most gracious of you. Thank you,” Daniel smiled.
Ike returned his grin. “Mist, show him to the guest room.” With that, he left the room with a wave of his cape.
Mist took Daniel by the hand, grinning. “Come on!” she laughed. Daniel grinned and allowed himself to be dragged. Mist stopped at a door down the hall. She opened the door and let Daniel enter. Daniel gazed around the room. He began to prod things that seemed a little odd. He realized something.
“I have nothing with me but the clothes on my back, my axe, and a few other things…” Daniel said nervously.
“So?” Mist asked, tilting her head.
“So, I have no other clothing…” He said.
Mist stared down in embarrassment. “I b-believe that Ike could lend-d you money for th-that tomorrow…” she stuttered. She turned to leave and said, “I should have dinner ready in about an hour.”
