Prologue - The Advance

Nephenee looked over the battlefield.
For many miles, all she could see is the laguz and the beorc fighting.
All she could hear was the cries of death as they so valiantly fell, while fighting for what they believe was right.
However, she trusted General Ike in his decision to lead his army to such a barbaric war.
She picked up her lance, and jumped into the battle.
Instantly, she was targeted by a sword wielder who charged at her.
Dodging to one side, she made a swift motion with her hand, and plunged the lance into him.
It took a few seconds for death to set in, but as soon as it did, he flopped on the lance, motionless.
Nephenee put her foot onto the corpses' head, and pushed. The body fell off of her lance, and flopped onto the floor. She pulled out a cloth, and quickly wiped the blood off of her lance, before rushing at a knight in front of her.
Her lance met his, and both were repelled.
A movement caught Nephenee's attention in the corner of her eye.
A warrior clad in blue jumped at the knight, gold sword shining, and split the knight's armour with ease. He winked at Nephenee.
“Hey! Don't go getting yourself into situations you can't handle, now!”
Nephenee grasped her lance a little tighter. She didn't like being babied.
”Sir, I'm not gonna do that. Besides, y'all know I could easily take on even General Zelgius.”
“Well, I won't deny that. But, be careful anyway.”
“Thanks.”
Ike ran off, instantly locking into battle with a Beginon soldier.
Nephenee looked after him for a few moments, then leapt back into battle.
After easily defeating a few myrmidons, she started to wonder what this war was about, and why she was fighting. Am I fighting because I want to? Do I enjoy it?
Or…
The death cry of another laguz snapped her back into reality.
She ran full pelt to the man who had just slain this laguz, and impaled him on the end of her lance.
He coughed up a little blood, but death was instantaneous.
One cat Laguz noticed what she did, and ran over to her.
”Hey. Wow. Nice handiwork”
Nephenee was startled, but remembered to be polite.
”Thank y'all. Umm… What's your name?”
The laguz let out a small laugh.
”Name's Lyre. Didn't know beorc could fight as fiercely as us laguz. I'm gonna keep an eye on your from now on. You could really make a good partner. See ya round!”
She closed her eyes, a barrage of small sparks surrounded her, and she started glowing. Within a few seconds, she had transformed into a cat, and sped off back into the battle.
Nephenee turned and watched her run, and suddenly she felt like all the breath had been taken out of her body.
Wh-…what's this feeling? I could have someone to fight with me? Someone could trust me like that?
Quickly shaking the feeling off, she turned and blocked the arrow that was heading straight for her with the shield she carried.
Quickly, she pulled one of the throwing spears that she kept with her off her back, and threw it at the archer that fired at her.
The lance flew straight through him, and stuck into the floor.
He stumbled backwards, and fell onto the spear.
Nephenee buckled up the rest of the spears, and looked around.
The Laguz have made a good advance. There's hardly any Beginon soldiers left here.
She heard a cry coming from the direction of the commander of the Beginon forces.
Nephenee smirked.
Heh. Ike must have gotten to him first.
She ran through the lines of both Beginon soldiers and the laguz, pushing both aside, until she reached the body of the commander, with Ike standing on top of it, pulling his sword out of the corpse.
“Stop this battle!” His voice was so commanding, everyone stopped, and all eyes were on him. “I have defeated your commander! We will not attack any soldiers who wish to flee now! Go, if you value your life!”
On hearing these words, most Beginon soldiers threw their weapons down, and turned to flee. All the Laguz and Greil Mercenaries stepped aside to let the soldiers run.
Ike moved into the centre of the pathway that his soldiers had created.
“Another victory! We'll be at the capital in no time!”
To this, there was a huge roar. A roar of victory.
Nephenee looked around at the warriors of both sides, and saw Lyre.
She walked over to her, her boots squelching in the blood soaked ground.
“Hey. I just wanted to say. Well done…?”
Lyre did a small spin on the spot, while jumping with glee.
”Hey! It's you! The lance girl! What was your name? I didn't catch it. I think I ran off too quick.”
Nephenee looked irritated, but decided to shake it off.
“Nephenee.”
Lyre stopped jumping and stared hard at Nephenee's face.
Nephenee stepped back a bit, confused by the Laguz girl's actions.
”Umm…Lyre? What are ya doing?”
“Hush. I'm trying to remember your face. That way I can put a name to it.”
She walked over to Nephenee, leant forward, and started staring intently at her face.
“Lyre!” Nephenee blushed and stepped back. “A gal needs her space you know…”
Lyre looked surprised at her reaction, but tried not to show it.
”Well. Nephenee, I'm gonna remember your name forever, and ever and ever now.”
“ My memory's pretty good, so I don't really need to do that…”
”Well, it's sort of a laguz tradition, we generally tend to do it to people we meet.”
Nephenee felt her limbs go cold. This wasn't the right way to start a friendship.
”I…I…I'm sorry. I didn't realise it was a tradition, I was just a bit startled.”
Lyre cocked her head to the side, and started trying to extract a small piece of earwax from her cat ears.
“Bah, don't worry your pretty little head about it. I'm not gonna kill ya for it.”
Nephenee breathed a sigh of relief.
”Hey, Lyre…” Nephenee swallowed.
”Hmm? Yeah?”
”Would you mind teaming up with me for the next battle? I mean, if it's not too much trouble…”
“Sure! Just don't hold me back!”
Nephenee smiled and turned around. “Well. See y'all then.”
