Coming Back
Chapter 2
Disclaimer: I forgot last time, so I'll say it now: I DO NOT OWN FRUITS BASKET. It belongs to Natsuki Takaya. And I don't own the song `Once Upon a Broken Heart'. It's sung by The Beu Sisters.
When the Chiyo and Setsuna returned to the shrine, they could hear a soft voice singing in the backyard. The two went around back to see Sakura with her guitar gently strumming the strings, singing quietly.
“Once upon a broken heart, I was walking alone in the dark,
Looking for a way to start again,
What I wouldn't give for a friend,
There was no love in my life; there was no light in my eyes,
All the tears that I had cried and cried seemed like they'd never end.
And I never believed fairy tales came true,
But now I know that they really do,
Now that I've found you, now that I'm here with you,
Just look at the sun shining
You showed me a world I'd never seen
I woke up and fell into this dream
Happily ever after just took time,
Once upon this broken heart of mine.
Long ago and far away, I could never dream of the day,
That your love would come my way and stay and sweep me away,
And I never believed fairy tales came true,
But now I know that they really do,
Now that I've found you, now that I'm here with you,
Just look at the sun shining
You showed me a world I'd never seen
I woke up and fell into this dream
Happily ever after just took time,
Once upon this broken heart of mine.
This is the way a fairy tale feels, this is the way I know its real,
`Cause this is the way a broken heart heals,
And I never believed fairy tales came true,
But now I know that they really do,
Now that I've found you, now that I'm here with you,
Just look at the sun shining
You showed me a world I'd never seen
I woke up and fell into this dream
Happily ever after just took time,
Once upon this broken heart of mine.”
Sakura let the last few notes drift away on the soft autumn wind. Sensing someone behind her, she turned her head to see Setsuna and Chiyo standing there. She said nothing, simply stood up and brushed past them and went into her room. The two stared after her.
Sakura collapsed on her bed after depositing her guitar by the wall. She raised her arm in front of her, still unbelieving at the tattooed black dragon entwined around her arm with the ruby red eyes that were like drops of blood. She dropped her arm and stared up at the ceiling and watched the shadows grow and move as the sun set. Her stomach growled but she ignored it. She refused to go into the kitchen and get something to eat, knowing that she would have to face at least one of her cousins to get anything close to a meal. Her stomach growled in protest again and she smelled corn beef and rice from the kitchen. She just sighed and dozed off into a troubled sleep, her mind ravaged from the crack of a whip and cold merciless laughter.

Setsuna exchanged looks with Chiyo. Neither of them had said much since they had come home. Setsuna had cooked up some white rice with corn beef, Sakura's favorite, to try and coax her out of her room. It hadn't worked so they had to eat it all by themselves.
They knew Sakura loved to sing. It helped her relieve stress, just like reading and drawing. The half Puerto Rican teenager did all those things. But why she would choose that song of all songs to sing was a mystery to them. Maybe it was what Sakura wanted. Maybe it was for another reason.
All that they did know was that Sakura was in for a bad wake up call tomorrow morning. It was to be her and Chiyo's first day at Kaibara High, as the principal had never sent their letter. Setsuna was expecting a big headache to come at six thirty tomorrow.

“Sakura! Levantate! Wake up!” Chiyo called through the door.
Sakura groaned, turned over and went back to sleep.
“Sakura! Wake up or I will kick down this door and you know I can!” came Chiyo's voice.
At this, Sakura sat bolt upright, unable to keep sleeping and knowing that Chiyo would go through with what she said. Sakura went to the door, unlocked it and said grumpily, “I'm up, I'm up. Happy now?”
“No. You still have to get dressed for school.” Chiyo told her, savoring the impact of the word school had on Sakura.
The Puerto Rican winced, snatched the clothes that Chiyo had in her arms, grabbed her navy blue towel and slammed the door to the bathroom shut.
Chiyo chuckled and headed to the kitchen, her being already dressed and all.
Setsuna looked up from her book and morning tea to a door slamming. A headache was coming on.
Right on time, Setsuna thought.
“Did you really have to say school?” Setsuna asked, raising her eyebrows.
“It gives me the added bonus of seeing the expression of `utter shock and hatred' on her face. After all, she doesn't have it on her face very much.” Chiyo said with a grin.
The older cousin shook her head. “You're getting way too much pleasure out of this.”
“So? Your point?”
“You're hopeless.”

Sakura looked at herself in the mirror. She wore a navy blue skirt that went to her knees and the plain girls' uniform top. She had put on shorts underneath the skirt though. And of course, she had to wear the shoes as well, which was probably the worst part of it. She preferred flip flops and sneakers to the tight shoes that the uniform required. She put her hair up with her black hair tie into a ponytail after she had brushed it.
Sakura sighed and headed downstairs, waiting for laughter and teasing from her cousins. There was a smell of eggs, probably scrambled and orange juice. She walked in the kitchen and frowned. Her appetite was gone with the sight of the charcoal that was in the frying pan.
“Oooooooooo! Look how cute you look, Sakura! You actually look like a girl!” Chiyo teased with an ear-to-ear grin.
Sakura punched her head and flipped through the morning newspaper and found the comics. She quickly scanned it.
Nothing too funny today, Sakura thought.
“Come on. You too need to get going. Oh and if you see Yuki or Kyou-kun, say hello to them for me.” Setsuna told them as they walked out.
The two cousins walked in silence, although Chiyo tried to get a rise out of her by teasing her, but Sakura didn't respond. Then they heard the school bell announcing school had started and they both quickened their pace. They walked into the front office and went up to the receptionist.
“Oh, you must be the two new students,” said the lady, looking up, “Let's see… Miss Tomoe and Miss Sohma… you are in class 2-D. Just walk out and it's the building to your left.”
“Thank you.” Chiyo told her and the two walked out.
The two turned left and entered the building. Sure enough, there was the sign above the door that read `2-D'. The two slid open the door and entered. The teacher looked at them and stated, “Ah, you two must be the new students. Chiyo Sohma and Sakura Tomoe, right? Welcome and take your seats.”
The two bowed politely, although Sakura's bow wasn't as low as Chiyo's and the two walked to the two empty seats. Sakura took the one by the window and Chiyo took the other one. Sakura did notice one thing however and that was three pairs of eyes on her and Chiyo. She quickly glanced around and saw Yuki, Kyou and a girl with brown hair that seemed very curious.
That must be Tohru Honda. And Yuki and Kyou haven't changed much either, Sakura thought.
She exchanged quick glances with Chiyo, knowing she felt far more glances at her because her last name was Sohma. She took out a sheet of paper and a pen and pretended to pay attention, but was instead drawing.
Her pen flowed across the paper, creating the pointed ears and slanted eyes of an elf and the strong muscles, large wings and sharp tips of the teeth of a dragon. A cherry blossom tree formed in the corner, its petals dotting the picture. A stream gurgled as she painted the rocks and pebbles with the lines that showed the current. In the background, she painted large mountains and wispy clouds. She was lost in her thoughts so that when the bell rang, signaling the class's end, she looked up startled.
Chiyo came over to her and observed her painting. She nodded approvingly.
“I think that's one of your best ones yet.” Chiyo commented, but then said, “You were doing that all class? You should be paying attention!”
Just as Sakura was about to reply, she noticed five people coming towards her. The two cousins turned to see the same brown haired girl along with a blond girl that was carrying what seemed to be a lead pipe and another black haired girl that had a freaky stare. Shadowing them was Yuki and Kyou.
“Hi! I'm Tohru Honda and these are my friends Arisa Uotouni (sp?), Saki Hanajima and Yuki and Kyou Sohma-kun.” The brown haired girl said brightly.
“Nice to meet you. I'm Chiyo Sohma and this is my cousin Sakura Tomoe.” Chiyo introduced and looked at Sakura meaningfully.
“Yeah, nice to meet you.” Sakura said, having been jerked out her thought once more.
“Hey, did you draw this?” Arisa asked, looking down at Sakura's picture.
“Um, yeah.” Sakura answered.
“That's really good. You drew this just now?” Tohru asked turning her head so that she could see the picture the right way up.
“Thanks and yes. I did draw this just now. I'm not a person who can pay much attention in school, though.” Sakura replied, forcing herself back into politeness.
That's when the second bell rang and they were all going to be late. Chiyo mentally cursed and said “I'm sorry, but we're going to be late for class.” She said.
The two walked out of class, Sakura gathering her pen and her picture and saying something in Spanish to Chiyo. Chiyo frowned and berated her for it, also in Spanish.
The rest of the day passed without much incident, although every class the two girls went to, they got stares because everyone recognized the name Sohma. Some members of the Prince Yuki Fan Club approached Chiyo and asked questions about Yuki. Sakura almost laughed at the bizarre questions and of course, at Chiyo's confused face, but then came up with the excuse that they hadn't seen him for years, which was more or less true.
As the two were walking home, Kyou, Haru and Momiji ran up to them. The two stopped and turned to look at the redhead.
“You two live with that wolf, right?” he asked.
“If you mean Setsuna, then yes. And aren't you the one living with the pervert dog?” Chiyo retorted.
“That's not the point we were trying to make.” Haru said, knowing that there was gonna be a fight if he didn't interfere,” The point was, why are you two here? Aren't you supposed to stay away from public areas, Akito's orders?”
“What Akito don't know won't hurt him. But don't make it seem like we wanted to come, because we didn't. Or at least I didn't want to at any rate.” Sakura said, then added,” And aren't you supposed to stay close to the main house, so you don't get lost?”
Haru's anger started to rise. “It's not my fault that I get lost!” he exclaimed.
“No it's not,” Sakura agreed, “Now earlier you guys mentioned a point to this conversation, and here's my answer, we don't give a damn about what Akito thinks, alright?”
Chiyo buried her face in her hands and ran after Sakura who had begun walking away.
“We should tell Shigure about this. He'll want to know.” Momiji said, pretending he didn't already know about them coming to school.
“Yeah. But we gotta wait for that damn rat to show up.” Kyou said, leaning against the wall to wait.
