Coming Back
Chapter 3
Disclaimer: I don't own Fruits Basket. It belongs to Natsuki Takaya.
Sakura walked down the street not paying much mind as to where she was going. She wasn't worried about transforming right now.
Screw the curse!, Sakura thought.
All Sakura knew was that she wanted to run and get home. And she meant her real home, Puerto Rico. She hated Japan. It was too quiet, at least for most people. She was tired of rules, of regulations and she was tired of the Sohma family. Sakura started running, unable to help herself.
I might as well just move back to Puerto Rico and live on my own. I'll be old enough to move out by next December. I'll live on my own and have no ties whatsoever to the goddamned Sohmas, Sakura thought angrily. It seemed like a good enough plan, if only she had the money to get there.
************
Chiyo raced after her cousin, who had now broken into a run. Why was she running? How angry was she? Not paying attention, she ran into a guy and red smoke enveloped her as a loud explosion could be heard around the street.
*************
Sakura braked at a loud explosion. She whirled around and saw the red smoke. She ran back, trying to find Chiyo. That was when she saw something reddish brown streak past her. She ran after it, as it had gone into the woods. Sakura saw a fox standing there, not too far in, panting and holding a school uniform in its mouth.
“Chiyo, you okay?” Sakura asked the fox.
Chiyo dropped the clothes and looked up at Sakura.
“What do you think? I was chasing after you and I ran into someone. Then POOF and I transformed.” Chiyo said angrily.
“I didn't ask you to come after me. You know I was gonna have to come home eventually anyway, so why were you worried?”
“Because you never used to get that mad at anyone except Akito and sometimes Hatori. Why do you bite off everyone's head that has any ties to the Sohma family?”
“Because, if it weren't for your family, I wouldn't be cursed and you wouldn't be either. Haru would have a sense of direction, Kyou could be normal, Hatori wouldn't be half-blind, Momiji's mom would still remember him, everyone would be just fine! I'm not mad at them. I'm mad at Akito mostly.”
“But you're still mad at them.” It wasn't a question, it was a statement.
“Yeah, but only because they're still following Akito's orders! They could fight back!” Sakura was becoming close to tears now. But still, she blinked them back. She promised herself she would never cry again.
A sudden loud explosion split the clearing and Chiyo quickly got her clothes and got dressed behind a tree. As she came out, she said to Sakura quietly, “No, they can't. Haru doesn't want Rin to get hurt anymore because of him or Akito. That's why he doesn't fight back. Kyou's been trying to fight all his life. Yuki is still afraid of Akito, same as you. Shigure's way of fighting was leaving the compound. They all have their reasons.”
“And Hatori? You didn't mention him.” Sakura asked, choosing not to address the fact that Chiyo said that she was afraid of Akito.
Chiyo just shrugged. “I don't know about Hatori, but he's probably got his reasons too.”
“Whatever.” Sakura said and just walked out of the clearing, her anger still simmering inside of her.
***************
Kyou, Yuki, Tohru, Haru, and Momiji walked into Shigure's house, calling for him. Shigure poked his head out of the office.
“Welcome home!” Shigure said with his infamous smile.
“Shigure, did you know about Sakura and Chiyo coming to our school?” Yuki questioned.
“What?”
“The damn rat asked if you knew if that dragon and that freakin' fox were coming to our school.” Kyou repeated.
“Which, Ha'ri or Sakura?” Shigure asked, just to piss them off.
“Sakura. Her and the fox came to our school today.” Haru said.
“Oh yes, Haa-san did mention something about them enrolling as students. Why?” Shigure grinned at their infuriated expressions.
“What, Sakura and Chiyo? They're part of the Zodiac?” Tohru asked, looking at them.
“Yes, well, kind of. They are cursed, but they can't really be called part of the Zodiac if they're never mentioned in the story.” Shigure told her.
Tohru look at him with a puzzled look.
“You see, there's more to the Zodiac story then everyone knows. There were two other animals not allowed in the Zodiac, the fox and the wolf, and the dragon spirit was split in half. It was split into basically a good side and bad side. Hatori's the good side, which is why he transforms into a seahorse and Sakura is the bad side and transforms into an actual dragon, which is why she has to be extra careful because a real dragon would be kind of hard to explain. Chiyo is the fox and her cousin, Setsuna, is the wolf. They live pretty much separated from the main branch of the family.” Shigure explained.
“But Sakura doesn't look Japanese,” Tohru said, still a little confused, “And her last name isn't Sohma.”
“Actually her father was a Sohma. Her mother was Puerto Rican with a Japanese father. So she had the last name Tomoe and they gave Sakura the last name Tomoe, hoping that she wouldn't be cursed. It doesn't really work, no matter what the last name. If you've got Sohma blood, you've got a chance of being cursed. Sakura was born in Puerto Rico and only moved here after her parents died seven years ago. I hear from Setsuna that she still has a lot of trouble reading, writing and speaking Japanese.” Shigure said.
“I thought it was strange she didn't talk much.” Haru mused.
“She never spoke much to begin with.” Momiji pointed out.
“…True.” The Sohmas all agreed.

Sakura slammed the door to her room. She fell on her bed, too tired to care. She was tired of running. She lay there for a few minutes, before getting up and going to her bookshelves. She scanned them and plucked out a book. The title couldn't be read, the book was so faded. Still, she took it back it her bed and opened it, the familiar aroma wafting to her. There were several equations and a circle with strange markings on it. She started to read, trying to get lost in the familiar book of alchemy.
