Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ Lost My Sister in San Francisco ❯ Those Winter Nights ( Chapter 11 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
A/N - 07/12/06 Okay, so tomorrow’s my brother’s birthday. I got him a card, and I don’t know what else to get him. Anyway, so my writers’ block is cured, woot! I hate when I get writers’ block, and it usually takes Abby and Tai to get rid of it. >.<;;; But I gotta learn to get over it without them, ‘cause once school starts, I won’t be able to see much of them anymore. (Abby goes to a different school and Tai lives in a different town.) Well, Abby can come over to my house every other day after school, but I’ll only be able to see Tai every other weekend or so. Okay, so here’s chapter eleven. n.n;;

“He’s coming back, right? To bring us our food?” Kokoro watched Devon walk back into the kitchen.

“He just brought us our food.” Kyou growled lightly. He didn’t really want to even look at Kokoro at the moment. Not that he cared if she liked some waiter guy named Devon. It’s not like he liked her or anything. Yeah right, that’d be the day.

“Well...he’s coming back to ask us if we need anything else, right?” Kokoro asked hopefully.

“What else do you need, Kokoro?” Sachiko sighed.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Kokoro sighed. “Is there a bakery nearby?”

“For what?” Tohru blinked.

“So I can–...” Kokoro began.

“Pick up a cutie pie like him?” Sachiko and Kippei finished for her.

“Chyeah.” Kokoro nodded.

“I think I’m gonna throw up.” Kippei groaned.

“You know, I think...I’m gonna take a quick trip to the ladies’ room.” Kokoro started to stand up.

“Sit down, Kokoro.” Sachiko commanded. She knew what Kokoro was like. It was like Akiko before she and Ichiro officially got together. Ah, those were the days. The days Sachiko would never want to repeat. Her older brother put up with a lot of crap in those days. But in the end, they all came to love Akiko.

“Fine.” Kokoro sat back down. She grumbled something under her breath as she crossed her arms across her chest.

“Now eat your food.” Sachiko said, eating the salad she ordered.

“It doesn’t have mustard.” Kokoro complained.

“Well who’s fault is that, Miss Hold-the-Mustard?” Sachiko sighed. She scooted a couple of packets of mustard across the table to Kokoro. “Thank you, Aunt Sachiko, for lying for me and saying you like to eat mustard with your salad.” She mimicked Kokoro’s voice.

“You didn’t have to.” Kokoro said.

“If I didn’t, you would’ve sat there and complained about there being no mustard in your burger. And you wouldn’t have asked for mustard, because then that’d make you look foolish in front of this new guy, which I really wouldn’t mind.” Sachiko said.

“Kyou, you aren’t eating. Are the ribs not good?” Kasumi blinked, looking at Kyou’s untouched plate.

“He wouldn’t know. He hasn’t tried them.” Yuki said, taking a bite of his burger.

“Shut up, rat boy!” Kyou yelled.

“Kokoro escaped.” Kippei stated, taking a bite of his ribs.

Kyou looked to the side where Kokoro was sitting. Yup, she escaped. Her seat was empty. She must’ve slid under the table while they weren’t looking. Dammit, how’d she manage to do that?! “I’ll be right back.” He growled, getting out of the booth and walking off.

“Did you see what I saw?” Kasumi asked, eating her burger.

“Kyou going after Kokoro?” Shigure took a piece of his steak.

“Yup.” Sachiko nodded.

“You all aren’t ever going to let him live that down, are you?” Yuki questioned.

Kasumi and Kippei looked to each other and smirked evilly. Their siblings were now at the corner of Pay and Back. This was gonna be fun.

“Hey,” Kyou caught up with Kokoro, grabbing her arm.

“Kyou! What’s the big idea?” Kokoro turned around. She was nowhere near the restrooms. By the looks of it, she was heading for the kitchen.

“You’re not allowed back there.” Kyou said. “Read the sign on the door, ‘Employees Only’.”

“So?” Kokoro shrugged, taking back her arm.

“You’re just going in there to find Devon, aren’t you?” Kyou slightly narrowed his eyes.

“...So? What? Are you jealous?” Kokoro smirked. She slightly leaned back and crossed her arms. “What’s this? Kitty Cat is jealous of the hot waiter guy who has stolen my heart?”

“You wish.” Kyou looked away, crossing his arms.

Actually, I do. Kokoro thought, looking at Kyou. I really don’t care how hot Devon is, Kyou. You’re the one I really want. I just don’t know how to tell you without the possibility of losing you.

“Fine, do what you want.” Kyou turned away from her. “If you get in trouble, it’s your own damn fault.”

Kokoro smiled and kissed Kyou’s cheek lightly. “If we weren’t in a crowded restaurant right now, I’d hug you.” She winked playfully. She walked off back to the table.

Kyou blinked. What just happened? Damn women and their ability to confuse people! Suddenly he felt a bit different. What was going on? It couldn’t be...Yup. It just might. So that’s what they call falling.

“I’m done, let’s go.” Kokoro said, finishing her burger. “Where to next?”

“The beach.” Kasumi smiled cheerfully.

“It’s freezing outside and you wanna go to the beach?” Kyou raised an eyebrow. “Something’s wrong with you. Are you sure you’re not still sick?” He felt her forehead.

“No!” Kasumi shook her head quickly. She hated to be sick. “Come on, I wanna go see the ocean again. It’s always great around the winter time because there aren’t any people around. Pleeease?” She begged, her pleading eyes fixed on Kyou. “Kyou-oniiichaaaan...”

“Fine.” Kyou sighed. There she went again with that face. Though they would’ve probably went anyway, even if Kasumi didn’t beg. He looked to her and smiled lightly, ruffling her hair a bit. “You’re just lucky you’re my sister.”

“I am, aren’t I?” Kasumi smiled, looking to Kyou. She laughed lightly and stood up. “Let’s go to the beach then, huh?”

“Sure.” Kippei smiled, getting up from his seat. “Sounds fun.”

“You guys go on to the car, I’ll get the check.” Kasumi offered.

“Kasumi, we can’t let you do that. We’re here to visit you, remember?” Shigure smiled lightly.

“Oh, but it’s my treat.” Kasumi smiled. “Go on, I got it.”

“You know she’s not gonna stop insisting until she wins.” Yuki said, standing up. He smiled lightly at his younger cousin. Sometimes he somewhat admired her persistent and stubborn personality, but sometimes Kasumi just didn’t know when to quit. “Miss Honda?” He offered his hand to Tohru, helping her to her feet.

“Oh, thank you.” Tohru smiled, taking Yuki’s hand.

“Shall we?” Shigure looked to Sachiko. He stood up and too offered his hand to his ‘date’.

“Why thank you, Shigure.” Sachiko laughed lightly as she took Shigure’s hand and stood up.

Kokoro glanced at Kyou. She quickly turned away when he looked at her. As soon as he turned away, her eyes wandered around for a bit. She caught Kasumi’s glance. There was a sort of ‘Make-a-gentleman-out-of-him’ look on Kasumi’s face as she nodded to Kyou with a smile. Kokoro looked to Kyou nervously, this time they both caught each other’s eye. They stared at each other for a moment before Kyou cleared his throat lightly and stood up. Kokoro smiled and gladly took his hand when he offered it to her.

“Let’s go.” Kyou simply said. It was barely there, but a small smile graced his lips as he looked to Kokoro.

Kokoro smiled and nodded, lacing her fingers with his as they walked out of the booth.

Kasumi and Kippei looked to each other and winked. They were both thinking the same thing. Though it’d be fun to give Kyou and Kokoro payback, it’d be to all of their benefit to play a little bit of matchmaker.

“Kitty kittyyyy, come walk with me.” Kasumi tugged at Kyou’s arm as they exited the car. “Come on, let’s go walk along the shoreline!”
“Quit calling me ‘Kitty Kitty’ and I’ll consider it.” Kyou said. He looked to Kasumi, catching her pleading eyes again. Nope, he still couldn’t see why he had to have a sister. But he loved her nonetheless. It was said already and he didn’t intend on taking it back. Besides, Kasumi was fun to have around sometimes. Especially when the mood needed to be lightened up a bit. “Alright fine, you win. I’ll walk with you.”

“Yay!” Kasumi smiled, pulling Kyou with her over to the water. “Take off your shoes. The water feels good.”

“How do you kn–?” Kyou started. He stopped after he saw Kasumi wading ankle-deep in the water with her shoes in her hand and her jeans rolled up to her knees. “You’re the craziest person I’ve ever known!”

Kasumi giggled. “Take off your shoes. It feels good, trust me.”

“I don’t think so.” Kyou shook his head.

“I’ll splash you.” Kasumi drew her leg back a bit, getting ready to kick some water at Kyou.

“Okay, okay.” Kyou gave in. He removed his shoes and socks and stood in the sand. He rolled up his jeans a little so they wouldn’t get wet. “Come on, let’s walk.” He began to walk away, his feet making imprints in the wet sand. He had to admit, it did feel pretty good.

Kasumi smiled and got out of the water, following behind Kyou.

“Shigure, look.” Sachiko lightly nudged Shigure’s arm and nodded towards Kyou and Kasumi. Kyou was walking ahead while Kasumi was directly behind him. What was even more cute was Kasumi mimicked his every step, stepping in every one of Kyou’s imprints with her own feet.

Shigure smiled lightly, watching them. “That’s Kasumi for you. She’s more of a leader than a follower, but when it comes to it there’s only one person she’d follow anywhere. And that’s Kyou.”

“That’s what I call admiration.” Sachiko smiled. “Don’t forget, we have to meet with Satsu tomorrow.”

“I know.” Shigure nodded. Both were quiet as they watched Kasumi follow in each of Kyou’s footsteps. After a moment they both laughed a bit. “We sound like we’re her parents.” Shigure laughed.

“We do, don’t we?” Sachiko laughed as well. Her eyes scanned the beach for her niece and nephew. She found them at the nearby pier. Kokoro was sitting on the rail while Kippei leaned forward against it. Sachiko could tell they were talking, but it didn’t seem too serious because Kokoro was half smiling. Kippei was staring into the water, listening to his sister talk to him. Sachiko shook her head lightly. It looked like her two got to have a little bonding time of their own.

Kyou and Kasumi approached the pier, Kasumi following Kyou’s every step along the way. Kippei stood up straight as Kasumi walked toward him. He took Kasumi’s hand and led her farther down the pier. Kyou walked over to Kokoro and took Kippei’s previous position of leaning forward on the rail. Kokoro hopped down, landing her feet on the pier and leaned on the rail as well.

“So...” Kokoro sighed, looking out into the ocean.

“Yeah...” Kyou sighed in return.

“Lovely.” Kokoro looked up at the twilight sky. She sighed once more and looked to her hands resting on the rail.

“So are you gonna stalk Devon after he gets off work?” Kyou questioned.
“I don’t care about Devon, Kyou.” Kokoro turned to look at him.”He’s hot, I’ll give him that but...he’s not the guy I want.”

“Is there a guy you want?” Kyou asked.

“If I told you, I’d have to kill you.” Kokoro joked. She smiled lightly and looked down the pier where Kippei and Kasumi had walked down to. “Well...that’s just sad.” She commented as she noticed that her little brother was in a full fledge make out session with his new girlfriend. “My little brother got his first kiss before I did.”

Kyou blinked, confused at first. Then he realized what she meant and stood up straight, looking down the pier. He made a slightly disgusted face as he spotted his younger sister. He took a step forward, getting ready to go interrupt them, but Kokoro lightly took his arm and held him back.

“Leave ‘em.” Kokoro simply instructed. “I suppose we can allow them to date until we leave back to Japan.”

Kyou shook his head and went back to leaning against the wooden railing. “So you’re saying you’ve never had your first kiss?”

“Yup.” Kokoro admitted, looking once again to the sky.

“And you’re how old?” Kyou asked.

“The same age as you.” Kokoro shrugged. “But you haven’t had your’s either.”

“And how the hell would you know?” Kyou questioned.

“You forget, your sister’s practically my best friend and can tell me almost any detail about you. You also forget that I’ve been going to the same school as you for about five months now. You’d be surprised what I’ve found out about you.” Kokoro smirked.

“Right.” Kyou scoffed. He looked to Kokoro, their eyes suddenly meeting and locking.

“So...” Kokoro started, staring into Kyou’s crimson hues. “If I haven’t had mine...and you haven’t had your’s...” She began to slowly draw closer to him. She didn’t notice that he was also slowly getting closer to her. “Then...maybe...” They were centimeters away from each other when Sachiko’s piercing whistle flew through the air. Kokoro mentally cursed her aunt’s bad timing as Kyou caught himself and quickly turned away. It was time to go.

Kasumi and Kippei caught up with Kyou and Kokoro, the four of them walking to the car. Everyone got in, started up the car, and drove off.

A/N - 07/13/06 x3 Yup! It’s officially cured! It’s 5:50 AM right. >.o;;; Lovely. I think I see the sun coming up a little bit. Joy. I’m prolly gonna fall asleep later. n.n;; Well, I got to squeeze a little bit of romance into the chapter. Poor Kokoro, she almost had her first kiss. Anyway, time to work on chapter twelve. I’m estimating this fic to have fifteen to twenty chapters. Ah, how I love the multiples of five.
