Chapter 12
Evening Tea
After Tohru told Kyou about Hatori and the baby she went back to the kitchen. Yuki was there and it was clear that he was attempting to make some tea. He was filling a teapot with water from the sink and it looked like he had the stove burner on high because it was glowing a bright reddish-orange. Tohru walked up behind Yuki and looked over his shoulder. She giggled a little at what she saw. There were tealeaves floating in the cold water contained in the teapot. Yuki set the teapot down on the counter carefully and looked a little bashful, “Oh, Miss Honda! I was trying to make you some tea…I don’t know if I am doing it right though…” he said with some awkwardness. “It’s okay, Yuki!” Tohru said cheerfully. “We’ll make it together!” She set the teapot on the burner and turned the burner down to medium/low. She would strain the tea afterward…she didn’t want Yuki to feel bad. That was Tohru…always looking out for other people and not herself. She had Yuki help set out the teacups and slice some caramel buns and place them on the serving platter, which he did quite well, not even breaking one plate or teacup in the process. She didn't know how hungry people would be for more sweets...but it seemed Shigure always had to have sweets with his after dinner tea no matter how much dessert he had. She always thought that was so silly of him. She chuckled and she turned to Yuki.
“Thanks, Yuki-kun! You did a great job!” Tohru exclaimed as she saw the table Yuki had set. He had even went out to the yard and picked a peonies for a centerpiece. She was impressed. Yuki was full of pleasant surprises, she just wished that he could see that himself. She took the tea off the burner as soon as she heard the teakettle whistle and strained the tea into her favorite porcelain teapot. Shigure had bought if for her as a thank you gift for posing for the cover illustration of one of his latest novels called “Innocence and The Moon”. It was covered in sakura blossoms and Shigure had said he picked it out because it was covered in flowers and she was “the beautiful flower of the household”. She walked out and set the teapot on the trivet. Yuki sat on his zabuton (floor cushion) and looked up at Tohru. He patted the cushion next to his and she sat down.
“Did you need to talk to me about something, Yuki?” she asked with some concern in her voice.
“Well, I just wanted to ask you something.” Yuki said and he cleared his throat and reached back behind him to pull out a little box.
Tohru’s eyes widened at the sight of the small box and knew what it contained. A ring. Yuki was very nervous and his eyes showed it.
“Tohru-kun, I want to know if you will marry me. I know this is sudden but I really love you and I am willing to help you raise the child….” He said quickly, trying to get it all out before he lost his nerve. Tohru wasn’t sure what to say. She knew Yuki deeply cared for her and she cared for him. But, she wasn’t sure this was what Yuki truly wanted for his life. He wouldn’t be able to go to the University if he was tied down here. She didn’t want him to give up his dream for her.
“Ano…Yuki-kun…I don’t want to make you feel like you have to do that…I couldn’t…your dreams…I..”
Yuki silenced her with one slender finger on her lips. “Tohru-kun, this is my dream. Don’t worry. I am asking you this because I want to. Not because I feel I have to.”
And he kissed her deeply. Tohru leaned into the kiss. She really did feel for Yuki but she was confused. She didn’t want to hurt Kyou, Hatori or anyone else. How would they feel about this? But, when she opened her eyes and looked into those of Yuki’s she made her decision. She never wanted to leave the embrace of the Rat.
“Hai…Yuki-kun, I will marry you..."
Hatori walked up to the front door of Shigure's house. He didn't come over at night often...but Shigure wanted to play a game of Go and said that Tohru would be brewing some tea for everyone so here he was. He rang the doorbell and Shigure answered the door. They went to the dining room and curiously, the table was set for tea but Tohru was nowhere to be found. They sat down and Shigure picked up the teapot to pour Hatori a cup. He was glad that Tohru chose the teapot he had given her.
“You know ‘Tori…I gave her this teapot…I thought it suited her quite well…” Shigure started happily as he poured Hatori a cup.
Hatori looked down at the cup and noted that the tea was not steaming. “Hmm? Shigure? Is that teapot warm?” he asked curiously.
Shigure had been so wrapped up in his story that he hadn’t even noticed that the teapot was cold to the touch.
“No. It is ice cold…something must be wrong. I wonder where everyone is?” Shigure replied with worry in his voice.
Just then, Tohru and Yuki walked into the room. They both looked like they had been crying and Yuki was holding on to Tohru protectively. They both sat down and Tohru started to say she would heat up the tea but Yuki stopped her.
“No…let Shigure heat it up. You should rest right here.” And he held her close to him all the while glaring at Hatori.
“Okay, I guess if it is all right with Shigure-san…I will rest a little here.” She said timidly.
“No problem Tohru-kun…I will heat the tea to perfection and be back in a moment. Want to come with me ‘Tori?” He asked, obviously sensing the tension in the room.
“No. We need to talk to Hatori.” Yuki said with no warmth in his voice.
Shigure backed out of the room with the teapot, shrugging a little at Hatori as he exited.
Hatori cleared his throat and started to say, “Yuki, listen to me…” when Yuki cut him off and said, “No! You listen to me! It will take me a long while to trust you again! The only reason I am being civil with you is because it is Tohru’s wish and I respect her. Otherwise, I would probably never want to see you again! You just remember that if you ever lay another finger on Tohru again without me present, I will kill you. I know how it is to be used by Akito...but it will take me a while to forgive you...” He said coolly.
Tohru whimpered a little and Yuki looked at her with concern.
“Are you okay? I know I am being harsh, but I want to make sure he understands.”
Tohru looked up at Yuki and said quietly, “I understand.”
Yuki looked across to Hatori saying, “ And you, do you understand?”
The doctor nodded, “Yes. I understand.”
Shigure came back in carrying the newly warmed teapot. “Here we are, some nice hot tea for everyone…” and he sat down and poured Tohru a cup.
Everyone sat in awkward silence until Tohru, feeling uncomfortable said, “Yuki helped me make the tea. Isn’t it good?”
Everyone nodded enthusiastically. No one touched the caramel buns…they weren’t in the mood for sweets.
Hatori finished his tea and pardoned himself from the table saying, “ I am sorry, I need to be getting back the Main House to check on Akito.”
Just then Kyou poked his head in and said, “Hatori! First you and I need to talk…I’ll walk you out to your car.” Tohru inwardly cringed. “I hope Kyou can hold his temper.” She thought to herself with trepidation.
As soon as Hatori closed the door behind him, Kyou grabbed hold of his arm and practically pulled him across the yard to his car. “Hatori! You are lucky to be alive and if Tohru didn’t care for you. You would be dead right now! I know that Akito drugged you but if you think that covers you completely you are seriously fucked up! I am really going to try and not be angry with you, but as you know that is not something I am very good at.” And he pushed him against the car and ran back inside, leaving Hatori to stand there and think over what he was just told. He thought to himself as he looked up at the starry sky, “That was a unexpected evening…Kyou seems to have taken the news better than Yuki. The real question is…how will I ever forgive myself?”
