3rd Step: Writer's Block
I took in my surroundings as I stood on the sidewalk. It was early morning and the earlier commuters as well as business owners went about their business like they did everyday at the beginning of yet another day. So far, so good. Everything was nice and quiet. Just how I preferred it. I waited for Miss Chidori to come out of her apartment so we could go to school. Though I knew it was still early, I already desired to see her. I shook my head. Knowing her, she would probably pop at the last minute looking cranky, and still half-asleep. Low blood pressure did that to people... well, at least to her. Still... even crabby she looked beautiful.
Wait... did I just think that? Well... I suppose I am getting a bit carried away with my feelings. Or maybe all the slaps with the harisen I receive were finally having a toll on me. No doubt, regardless of the circumstances, Kaname Chidori was a very attractive young woman. That, I figured a long time ago, not only from the moment I saw her the very first time, but even more when I looked at her... when I peeked at her—not in a bad way... she has always been completely dressed! (Considering if the case had been otherwise, I shuddered as I imagined what my fate would have been, and knowing Miss Chidori, I knew that her softball bat, instead of her infamous harisen would have been more adequate for that situation.) However, that did not take away from the fact that even when she was not wearing much, like during softball practice—with those small shorts—or when we went to the beach—and she wore that... bikini. I felt compelled to say something more than in one occasion, but again, knowing Miss Chidori, and with my prior experience, it had to be the “look, don't touch, or say anything!” approach—and look secretly at that! Furthermore, to have her bodyguard ogle her just wasn't appropriate, let alone professional.
“Good morning, Sousuke...” a tired voice said.
I looked up and saw Miss Chidori with slightly puffy eyes, but nonetheless at least 60% awake. That was a miracle! But what wasn't a miracle was that like an amateur, I was caught deep in my thoughts and didn't even notice when she walked out of her apartment.
“Uhh... good morning, Miss Chidori,” I said, almost evenly. “Shall we go?”
“Yeah...” she said along with a yawn.
The walk and train trip to school was uneventful. We arrived to school and were immediately greeted by Miss Chidori's long-time best friend, Kyouko Tokiwa. That instance also resulted uneventful, and eventually class began without a problem. As usual, the secretive glances from Miss Chidori caught me off guard. They were not obvious peeks, but being the specialist that I was, I caught them without a problem. Additionally, they were much easier to catch because surprisingly, she was doing it more often than usual. Furthermore, when she did look, I could not help but to sense a feeling of uneasiness coming from her... as if something at the back of her mind kept nagging at her... she seemed to be, perhaps troubled with something. No doubt the only thing I could've done was further investigate this situation. Most of the classes went by quietly, and then the lunch bell rang. Most fellow students rushed out like a stampede from those old western movies that every once in a while I would watch in TV... call it an “acclimation to society” assignment from Miss Chidori. She would preach that I was to watch those films if I was to understand certain aspects of civilian culture, or as she liked to call it, “normal people stuff.”
I stood up and organized all my school utensils inside my desk, and watched as Miss Chidori did the same leisurely, which I found somewhat disturbing. Miss Chidori would usually be the leader of the pack in those stampedes, moving with unimaginable grace, skill and tactical maneuvers that almost matched my own, and sometimes, though I hate to admit it, exceeded them.
“Miss Chidori?” I voiced after putting away all the items.
She flinched and then looked up, as if I had interrupted her thoughts. “Yeah?”
“Are you feeling well?” I asked. “I've noticed you seem distracted, and several times I noticed you were flushed... perhaps you have fever?”
She blushed again. It seemed that fever was periodical.
“No, no, I'm fine, Sousuke. Don't worry about me,” she assured.
“But, Miss, Chidori—”
“I'm fine, Sousuke, I promise. I've just... had a lot on my mind, that's all,” she said, fidgeting slightly.
“If there is anything I could do...” I voiced, feeling hopeful inside. This was so unlike the full-of-life Miss Chidori I was accustomed to.
She smiled, shaking her head. “Don't worry... it'll pass. Thanks for worrying though.”
“Miss Chidori, please do not hesitate to ask me anything, whether it is to take you to the infirmary, or to take you home so you can rest, or to get any over the counter medication. Just say the word—”
She chuckled slightly as she walked towards me with a small smile. “I'm fine, silly!” Taking hold of both my hands in her own, she then smiled radiantly. Instantly I felt my heart skip a beat painfully. Having her so near me looking so beautiful was simply abuse from her part! And since when did Miss Chidori became as daring as she was at the moment, holding my hands and looking at me the way she did. Her eyes told me something that somehow I understood, but could not put into words. However, the feeling inside me somehow filled my soul with joy.
“Very well, Miss Chidori,” I stated. “But please do not disregard what I said. If there is anything you need, do not hesitate to call.”
She continued smiling. “I won't, I promise. Now let's go to lunch... I don't want to get stuck with plain rolls because of you, you moron!”
I shook my head and smiled... only slightly. That was more like the Kaname Chidori I was used to.
“Roger,” I said confidently. “Would you like me to put my tactical skills to use and clear the way for you—”
“No!” she exclaimed, a little louder than usual, making me flinch. She took a deep breath, calming her nerves. “No, Sousuke. That is not necessary.”
“Well, perhaps you will at least allow me to get the roll for you. It is not necessary for you to struggle your way through that chaos.”
She looked at me, shocked, slightly blushing. “You would do that?” she asked quietly.
“Affirmative,” I said. “What kind of roll do you desire, Miss Chidori?”
She fidgeted some more.
“Miss Chidori, are you alright?” I asked concerned.
She seemed to have snapped out of her tranced and scratching the back of her head while laughing her sarcastic laugh. “ahahahaahaha... of course I am, silly! A croquette sandwich and a custard pastry would be fine. Here's the money.”
“That is not necessary,” I said, refusing the money. “Please standby while I acquire your lunch.”
“But—”
Not giving her a chance to argue, I turned around and headed towards the lunch vendor.

----
That jerk! Why does he have to go being a gentleman like that! He's not helping! But... it felt nice at the same time. However! That didn't take away from the fact that it made it all the more frustrating. This wasn't fair! Stupid moron... getting me lunch and paying for it. If he could only realize what he did to me when he did things like that.“Kaname! You still haven't gotten lunch! That's shocking. Are you feeling sick or something?”
I was snapped out of my own thoughts by one bubbly Kyouko who popped out of nowhere. Man, she was good at that.
“Huh! No, I just got out of class a bit later than usual. And NO I'm not sick! What is wrong with everybody today! Do I look sick or something?”
“Umm, not really, but it's not like you to be so out of it. Is something the matter?”
“Ahahahhaha... of course not, nothing's the matter, Kyouko! Jeez...” Now Kyouko noticed too! Am I really making it that obvious?
“Umm... okay. Hey, where's Sousuke anyway? He's usually attached to your hip; has he gone to cause trouble again?”
“No, he's just getting me some lunch right now.”
“Ohh...” I saw how she smiled like a Cheshire cat.
“What!” I asked indignantly. “What are you thinking, Kyouko!”
“Ohh... nothing,” she said, obviously playing dumb. “I just think that's sweet. And... that that is something a boyfriend would do...”
“Oh, please, Ky. You know Sousuke doesn't know anything about that. He's too dense to figure anything out...”
“Oh, you mean he hasn't figured out that you like him?” Kyouko asked playfully.
“No! That is not what I'm talking about... and... and... I do not like him!” Saying that so loud caused a few bystanders to turn and stare at me quizzically. I posed my battle stance and growled. “What are you all looking at! I'm not talking about Sousuke!” I thought about that twice, but it was only after I had said it. Leave it to me to put my own foot in my mouth. Groaning and blushing slightly, I watched as they cringed in fear when I snapped first, but then smile knowingly when I said the second part. “I said, what are you all looking at!” I barked. This time they cringed again, and reacted instinctively, turning around and minding their own business.
I turned to Kyouko, who apparently had been enjoying the whole show. “Now what! What's so damn funny?”
Kyouko chuckled. “Oh, nothing, nothing... anyway, I wanted to show you this thing—”
Kyouko's words were cut off by loud bangs—of course, strongly resembling Glock 17 gunshots—followed by one loud boom. Only one person could cause that kind of chaos. Sergeant Sousuke Sagara, Mithril AS Pilot specialist. Gah! Why me...!
Naturally, the chaos increased. Students ran to and fro frantically, like chickens without heads. Some others just stood by, accustomed to these kinds of occurrences, while others walked “in an orderly manner” as far as possible away from the chaos. Me, on the other hand, walked straight to it, followed by a hesitant Kyouko. Why she followed... it was obvious. Though she didn't exactly felt safe, Kyouko wasn't one to walk away from a chance at shooting the picture of a lifetime. In that picture, you would find me, Kaname Chidori, beating the living lights out of an idiot named Sousuke Sagara.
Camera in hand, Kyouko, still hesitant, followed behind me, trying to avoid the dust from the aftereffects of the explosion getting into her eyes. My eyes immediately zeroed on Sousuke as he crouched behind a bench, revolver in hand, as if waiting for something to happen. Oh... he's gonna get it good...!
“Sousuke!” I barked.
I watched as he continued looking forward, opposite direction to where I was. “Not now, Miss Chidori. I'm assessing the situation and ensuring that the chaos has subsided.”
“You mean the chaos you caused!”
“Negative, Miss Chidori. I have actually ended it.”
“Oh, really?” I asked sarcastically. “Care to share how that happened?” I asked, harisen already locked and loaded.
“You see, Miss Chidori. As I walked towards the lunch vendor, a fight broke out after a student bumped into another, spilling a drink into the other's uniform. It so happens that the one student who was spilled on has bully tendencies and wanted the other student to not only wipe him clean, but to buy him another lunch as well. I could not stand by and watch a student abuse another, so I approached the situation, asking both students to disregard the matter at hand, and go on a peaceful fashion. The bully refused to do so and resorted to violence, attacking the other student and myself. I used the least lethal means to subdue the situation, and the bully was neutralized, thanks to my conflict solving skills—”
THUACK! That... you see, was the harisen talking. “Least lethal!” I barked angrily. “You call gunshots and a grenade non-lethal! What kind of moron, idiotic, stupid jerk are you!”
Snap/flash, snap/flash... That, on the other hand, was Kyouko's camera.I was snapped out of my own thoughts by one bubbly Kyouko who popped out of nowhere. Man, she was good at that.

“Miss Chidori, that hurt...”
“Good, I hope it did and in the process knocked some sense into that empty head of yours. Sometimes I wonder if you even have a fully functional brain or if you have one at all!”
“But, Miss Chidori—”
“No buts, Sousuke! I'm sick entire of you only causing problems for everyone around, me most of all! When are you going to stop this madness—”
“Mr. Sagara!”
Snap! Snap! Snap! Snap! Kyouko again... man, she was loving this!“Good, I hope it did and in the process knocked some sense into that empty head of yours. Sometimes I wonder if you even have a fully functional brain or if you have one at all!”
“But, Miss Chidori—”
“No buts, Sousuke! I'm sick entire of you only causing problems for everyone around, me most of all! When are you going to stop this madness—”
“Mr. Sagara!”
We both turned to find one disheveled Ms. Kagurazaka, the word “angry” coming short of describing the expression in her face. Sousuke immediately stud up, though wobbled a bit. apparently the aftershock of the harisen still in effect.
“Ma'am!” Sousuke stood at attention.
Snap!“Ma'am!” Sousuke stood at attention.
“I've had enough of all your troubles around this school!” she snapped, her eye twitching and a vein running down the middle of her forehead pumping blood furiously, resembling the culminating point where it would explode.
“My apologies, Ma'am!” Sousuke said stiffly, still at attention.
“That's right... I'm not the only one tired of all the insanity you've caused,” I said, eagerly agreeing with Ms. Kagurazaka.
“I did not ask for your assistance, Miss Chidori!” Ms. Kagurazaka said, snapping... at me.
Snap! (Yes, Kyouko again). Apparently she had a death wish. I'm so gonna get you, Kyouko, I thought to myself, looking at her menacingly while she just smiled innocently.“My apologies, Ma'am!” Sousuke said stiffly, still at attention.
“That's right... I'm not the only one tired of all the insanity you've caused,” I said, eagerly agreeing with Ms. Kagurazaka.
“I did not ask for your assistance, Miss Chidori!” Ms. Kagurazaka said, snapping... at me.
“Why is it that every time I find Mr. Sagara causing mischief you always happen to be in the vicinity if not right next to him. I'm beginning to think that you're his partner in crime. Apparently his influence on you has been a lot stronger than any of us could've imagined. And to think you were always eager to pretend the opposite, reprimanding Mr. Sagara and letting him take all the blame. That, to say the least, Miss Chidori, is very disappointing.”
What? What! What on earth is she talking about! “But Ms. Kagurazaka! That's not—”
“I do not want to hear any of it, Miss Chidori!”
“Ma'am! Miss Chidori has had no involvement in my actions—” That was Sousuke, who immediately was cut off by our homeroom teacher.
“Quiet, Sagara!” Ms. Kagurazaka thundered. “I was not speaking to you.”
Sousuke stiffened again, as if he could anymore than he already was. For some reason, however, even I trembled slightly. Ms. Kagurazaka was starting to resemble a drill sergeant. Was she by any chance related to Commander Mardukas? You never know... I would've never thought she was one to impose so much fear on someone!
She then turned to me, anger still in her eyes. “You. Sagara. After school. Detention. That is final. You two and I will have a special two-on-one session. Right after school. Do not be late! Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, Ma'am!” Sousuke and I said in unison. Even I was standing at attention now.
“Good!” she said. “I do not want a single more incident to happen, got it!”
“Roger!” we said in unison, again. Wait... did I just say roger? Ugh... that idiot... rubbing off on me like that. Oh, he's so gonna get it MUCH worse than Kyouko!
“Seriously...!” we heard Ms. Kagurazaka mutter as she turned around and started walking away, dusting her clothes as she strode past Kyouko without even acknowledging her presence.
“My apologies, Miss Chidori—”
“Shut UP!”
Snap! That Kyouko...! Ugh...!
“I tried to explain to Ms. Kagurazaka that you had—”
“I don't care!” I exclaimed. “Everything is always your fault! Thanks a lot, Sergeant IDIOT!”
“Miss Chidori...” THWACK!

“Miss Chidori... that really hurt...”
THWACK!“Ow...” he said lifelessly.
“I said shut up!” I roared. “Do not talk to me! Do not get near me! Do not follow me! Got it? This is just wonderful... now even I'm getting tagged because of your stupidity!”
“Miss Chidori...” he sighed helplessly.
“No!” I said. I turned around and started walking away, leaving a very confused Sousuke Sagara... that... that... JERK!
I as continued walking, my stomach growled wildly... just my luck. I looked over my shoulder and glared at him.
“By the way, Sergeant Stupid, thanks for lunch!”

I sighed. I cannot recall the last time I felt that helpless and useless, or worse yet, inferior. Despite all my feelings, there was still a mission at hand, and it was my duty to accomplish it. The least I could've done for Miss Chidori to atone for my uselessness was continue ensuring her safety. That, I knew confidently, I was good at. In a way, her distance requirements weren't that bad. Keeping distance from her would prevent the distraction that being near her inevitably brought.
Taking a deep breath, I turned towards the vendor window. Seeing nobody around, I jumped over the counter with ease, went towards several containers against a wall which seemed undamaged by the explosion. These containers carried various kinds of foods. Rummaging through them I extracted two items. After securing these items, I jumped over the counter and walked away, but not before digging into my pockets and leaving 300 yen behind. In my hands, I carried a croquette sandwich and a custard pastry....
