I don’t own FMA and I have no idea why anyone would assume that so um yeah.
Mary awoke the next morning staring at the ceiling. She lifted her head and saw that her head had been rested on a now sleeping Riza Hawkeye’s lap. Making sure to not disturb the sleeping gunslinger she got up gently and quietly. When she had stood up in the office she noticed something. She wasn’t wearing her day clothes but an oversized tee shirt and her favorite pair of boy shorts; she looked around the office seeing a bunch of paperwork on Mustangs desk much more than usual. She walked over to the desk and picked up a random paper from the desk and reading it. ‘Death certificate in the name of Kane Young’. When she read the name on the cursed paper memories of the night before came flooding back to her. And she placed the paper back on the desk without a changed expression. She turned to the spot where the suitcases should be and found them sprawled out and open, clothes littering the ground. Mary approached the clothes and retrieved an outfit and changed behind the desk hoping no one would decide to come in without knocking. When she had finished she left the empty (except for a sleeping Riza) room and observed the subordinates office space and saw all of ‘her men’ as she had dubbed them; Havoc, Armstrong, Fuery, and Edward. All sleeping propped up against desks and leaning over the backs of chairs. But she felt that something was missing then it came to her ‘Mustang’ she thought taking a quick take around the room to find no Mustang. She swiftly left the subordinate’s office space and headed down the stairs.
When she arrived to the main entrance of the building she found exactly who she was looking for. She found Roy in the main entrance, but when she saw who he was with she ducked back behind the corner hoping she hadn’t been seen. There stood Roy with that horrid woman from Child Protective Services who she had thought she was done with a week ago when she arrived at HQ. She listened intently as she heard certain parts of their conversation.
“I can’t believe this. She has no family now” the woman said in an obviously artificial tone of sadness.
“I know it is sad” Roy replied dryly as though he had heard this a million times already.
“You do realize that the chances of her finding a good home at her age are slim to none” the woman pitched in an emotionless tone.
“I wanted to ask you, what will happen if she doesn’t find a family?” Roy asked the woman in pure curiosity.
“Well she will live in a shelter and when she turns 18 they’ll cut her loose. In my opinion it’s a bad way to waste 2 years of her life being so talented” the woman replied only to get a questioning hmm.
“I was wondering if you carried any adoption forms with you even if it’s just a draft of one” Roy requested randomly. You could almost see the surprised look on the woman’s face as she heard what the said ‘playboy’ had said. She answered in a stutter.
“A…. actually I carry around some of the actual documents” pulling out some papers from the bag that straddled her shoulder and handing them to Roy with the sound of bending crisp new paper. There was silence between the two as Roy supposedly skimmed through the endless document.
“If it isn’t too bold of me sir I must ask. Are you planning on adopting this girl?” the woman asked bluntly as she watched him.
“Yes…it is too bold of you to ask. Good day” he excused the baffled woman and walked around her out the door of the building taking a direction to the right heading towards the mess hall. With Mary heading after him causing the baffled woman’s jaw to drop at the sight of the blonde eavesdropper.
Mary approached the entrance to the large room to see Roy sitting alone in the room with a full tray of food and the adoption papers. For a moment she stood there in the door way when Roy stopped chewing looked up and around at her smiling and motioning for her to come and sit down with him. Mary approached the opposite side of the table slowly and sat down across from him propping her feet up on the table. Roy pushed the tray towards her offering food to the girl as he looked down at the papers. Mary pushed the tray back towards him and swung her legs off the table and leaned forward eyeing the paper asking an answered question as to make sure all considerations of what she had been doing were dashed and that he would assume she had found him here by coincidence.
“So what’s that?” Mary asked trying to put a hand on the document but having Roy slip it behind the folds of his uniform before she even got a finger on it.
“Just some business papers nothing interesting” Roy declared smiling at her then picking up a roll and taking a hunk out of it then devouring it in his teeth. And looking up at her. Staring into her deep blues with his onyx eyes.
“You should eat, he wouldn't want you to starve yourself” Roy stated bluntly causing a fire to ignite within her heart burning her skin. She brought her fists down upon the table surface
“Do you think I’d resort to that Mustang? God sometimes you can be so-” Mary began to fume but stopped when she felt Mustangs hand upon hers. She looked down at his hand that was holding hers tightly, she almost broke down crying when she remembered that last person that held her hand that tightly. Her brother. But she shook away the tears wiping the memory from her mind.
“I wasn’t implying anything Mary. I just need to know you will be ok” Mustang said. His face downcast looking at the table surface. But she knew he was crying. And truthfully it scared her. She pulled away from his grasp and ran out of the room. She stopped at the steps of the main building and thought ‘ What was that? I haven’t felt that in a while. I mean I’ve connected with Ed especially when he gave me his heart last night but., Mustang isn’t in that position! Why don’t I want to get close to him? Why am I so afraid of being understood by him and not by Ed?’ then a picture of her father came into her mind ‘It’s because he reminds me of Dad, his weird over protectiveness and the way he held me that night. The same way dad did when I broke my arm’ she thought as a picture of a tall man carrying a small child one arm tucked and the other grasping his shirt and her face in his shirt. ‘Am I able to feel things towards Ed because he can’t remind me of my lost love ones? And Roy does? Or is it something.. something else’
