Chapter Two:
I didn't know whether to sputter, stand there and let him continue, or to smack him across the face. The crime that he had just committed was… well, I'm not sure if it's a crime or a miracle. I could squeal… or I could scream. Anyway, the bottom line was that I was just kissed by a State Alchemist. Is that a good thing?
“Nii-san!” Alphonse, even though his helmet had no expression, being the tin can that it was, stared in horror as if he actually had a face of flesh. “What are you doing?!”
Edward finally pulled away and turned to glance at the younger Elric. “What does it look like I'm doing?”
“Well, it's more like, “what are you thinking”?!” A hand not-so-gracefully tried to grab the State Alchemist by the back of his jacket, but Edward merely stepped aside, his gloved digits still firmly attached to my sleeve.
Edward gave a triumphant grin. “She didn't seem to care.”
Well, my facial expression was quite blank due to the spectacular inner monologue I was having in my head. I stared straight ahead, apparently into outer space or some other fanatic's psychotic alternate universe. Yes, I finally got it straight that I was kissed. Kissed by… what again? I know I got kissed… oh, Edward. Yes, very nice young man. Gorgeous blond hair, sexy washboard abs, and the beautiful, captivating golden tiger eyes. Never in my lifetime would that image leave by supposedly brain-dead mind.
“I don't think that she's thinking about whether to care or not.” The overly large tin can grumbled.
Edward turned to look at me and frowned. “Gee, she acts as if she's never been kissed before.”
There was a moment of silence as the brothers seemed to wait for me to reply but looked at each other strangely when none came.
“Should I kiss her again?”
“Nii-san!”
“What? She can't even hear us.”
“You've done enough for tonight. Let's just pick her up and take her home.”
“Gee wiz, Al. That sentence you just said made it sound as if she was your personal happy slave.” Edward grinned.
Alphonse practically squeaked in horror. “EDWARD!”
“You rang?”
“That was totally-“
“Necessary, I know.”
“NO!”
The State Alchemist laughed as he turned back towards me. Mind you, I was still having my intellectual, very non-self centered thought-speech. Somehow, I had gotten from the image of Edward in a pair of black and yellow swimming trunks to a scene of trolls and goblins being marauded by a malevolent, yet very sophisticated penguin. Yes, totally different pictures with nothing in common, I know. Such was my daily life.
Edward tapped my nose in order to get my attention. “Hey, we should get going before your eyes get stuck like that. You're cross-eyed.”
I blinked. I didn't know I crossed my eyes when I was thinking really hard…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *Scene Change*
The two Elrics stood in front of the Government State Building, Alphonse using an old key to gain access while I continued to trail Edward like a duckling. It was clearly obvious that I still was taking my time to get over the shock of being kissed by a State Alchemist. I mean, seriously. Does that happen to you every day? Does it? Huh? HUH?
“We're here…” announced Edward, noticing that I wasn't doing much other than staring at him… not that he minded it.
“Oh…” I peeled my eyes from the blond to look over the building in surprise. “Wait a minute,” I said, scratching my head casually, “this is a government building. Why are we here?”
“Because I live here at the moment.” Edward grinned as he swung open the door and made a gesture for me to go in. I hesitated at first… but where else did I have to go? I could have ran away if I wanted to… although at this moment, it'd be kind of pointless. So I entered the giant house, hoping that something wouldn't try to jump out and eat me.
Too bad I had to always think like that. Just as the thought had passed through my head and out my ears, I heard the creaking footsteps coming down the hall… and I knew that they weren't Edward's, Al's, or mine.
“Oh, Full Metal.”
A man dressed in a fashionable military outfit came around the corner and stopped a few steps from where I was. His eyes were a dark brown, nothing like Ed's were, although I could tell that this man probably wasn't someone who was going to try and suck out my brains. This man was quite tall, definitely taller than me, and taller than the blond alchemist by a long shot. I noticed strange alchemy circles on his gloves and couldn't help myself from wondering why he would use such an interesting state of fashion.
“Colonel Mustang,” Alphonse closed the door after he and his brother had entered, making a slight bow to the ebony-haired man. This person must have been someone pretty important… and he was kind of good-looking too.
Edward didn't seem to like this Colonel Mustang man very much. “What do you want, Colonel?”
The man who had been addressed raised his eyebrows as he folded the newspaper that rested in his hands. “Nothing, I was just saying hello. Hey…” he eyed me now, and I could feel my stomach begin to squirm, “who's her? Another wench you picked up off the street, Full Metal?”
“WHAT?!?” Edward exploded, raising his fists above his head like a child throwing a tantrum. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT, COLONEL?!?”
Mustang laughed. “Cool it, you don't have to take everything I say so seriously. Geesh, you can be so sensitive at times.” He turned back to me with a smirk on his face. “I feel a bit sorry for you, kid. Being stuck with him can be quite a hassle when you come to think of it. Take it from his superior. My name is Colonel Roy Mustang, and it's a pleasure to meet you.”
I stared.
“… Don't talk much do you?”
“…”
“Are you mute or something?”
“No.”
“Oh, ok then. Would you grace me with your name?”
“… No.”
Edward and Alphonse snickered.
“No? Aww, come on. You don't have to be so sour towards me. Won't you give me your name, please?” Roy pouted.
I continued to stare at him.
“Is it because I called you a wench?”
“I'm an alchemist, sir.”
Mustang blinked, apparently not expecting to hear that from someone like me. “Oh, well that's something you don't see every day. Are you a state alchemist?”
“No.”
“I see, what do you specialize in?”
“I specialize in potion-making, sir.”
“Is that it?”
“No.”
“… You like saying no, don't you?”
“No.”
“…” Mustang sighed, lifting a gloved hand to wipe his forehead. “Alright then, are you sure you won't give me your name? I would love to see you again some time.”
“Don't count on it.”
“Ahhh!” The Colonel threw up his hands and took a step closer to me, causing me to step back in return, “just tell me your name, please?”
“Why?”
Edward burst out laughing, having to hold his sides to keep himself from falling over. “That has to be the first time I've ever seen the Colonel rejected by a girl besides the Lieutenant!”
“Nii-san!” Alphonse jerked his brother around and pointed to where I was.
I had found myself pinned with my back to a table, eyes somewhat wide as I felt the tall lingering body of the Colonel hovering over mine. All I could do was merely stare up at him while I was trapped.
“Don't make me force your name out of you…” The words left Roy's mouth like smooth quicksilver, the ends of his syllables washing down my face and off my nose. I could feel myself begin to sweat without even trying.
“I'm sure you could find out my name without even having to ask me, dear Colonel,” I replied, locking my eyes with his to show I was serious.
Mustang smirked, “Yes, that's true… but I prefer to find out a lady's name from herself, not the computer.”
“I could lie.”
“I'd be able to tell if you lied to me.”
“Is that so? You don't seem the type who would notice anything even if they flashed it in front of your face.”
The Colonel frowned, leaning closer so that our noses were only centimeters away. The chocolate irises of his eyes were dark and captivating, easily showing me the reason why he was such the ladies' man. If it wasn't for his breath trying so hard to dampen my face, I would have been able to concentrate a bit better.
His voice was thick and rich as he spoke. “I can prove it to you.”
“Do your worst.” I hope he wasn't about to try anything dangerous.
“Colonel!” Edward snapped, lunging forward to prevent the man from doing whatever he was about to do, but Roy merely lifted up his right arm and put it against the blonde's forehead, stopping Ed's assault on him. He easily held him there, the tiny state alchemist fuming and waving his arms about like a child.
Mustang pushed Ed away and smirked, looking at him through the corner of his eye without turning his head away from me. “It's rude to interrupt, Edward Elric. You said she wasn't your girlfriend, so therefore… I have every right to do as I please.”
“I didn't say she wasn't my girlfriend!”
“Oh, so she is your girlfriend, then?”
“No!”
“Then I can take her.”
“No, you can't do that either!”
“Oh? So, then what are you going to do about it?”
There was a moment of silence. “Uh… I'll… I'll make you so miserable that everyone will hate you!”
“Hmmm, that sounds a bit difficult for a child like you to handle. You sure you can pull off something like that?”
“WHO'RE YOU CALLING A KID SO PUNY THAT THEY COULDN'T EVEN LIFT A ONE POUND WEIGHT?!?”
Roy smirked again, beginning to caress my cheek with his gloved hand. “Well, that's about what you can lift, right, Full Metal?”
Chomp.
“OUCH!” The Colonel yelled, jerking back his hand and backing away from my frame, “she just bit me!”
I stood there, brushing myself off and smiling triumphantly. Waiting for the Colonel to get distracted and bite him was a pretty good idea, if I do say so myself.
Alphonse sweatdropped. “She bit you?”
Cracking up again, Edward grinned at Mustang. “Talk about humiliation. So much for the ladies' man, eh, Colonel?”
“Shut up, Full Metal…” Mustang grumbled, rubbing his injured hand before turning to head back down the hallway. “I guess I'm going to go home now. Good night, Full Metal. Night, Alphonso. And…” he stopped to look at me before passing on, “good night, Chomper.”
After the Colonel had left, Edward, Alphonse and I took our head down the hall. The blond alchemist showed me to a room, wishing me a good night's sleep before I turned in.
“I'll come and check up on you in the morning, ok?” Ed smiled at me, his hands resting on his hips lightly as he did so.
“If that satisfies you,” I replied, twisting the doorknob and taking my leave into the room. “Sleep well, Full Metal Alchemist.”
“Sweet dreams, Chomper.”
