Chapter 5: Incognito II, The truth revealed.
Ed threw the private room door open with a humph.
“I'm bored” he said nonchalantly as he sat down beside Al, he did have to admit that it was easier travelling in the private carriage of a train then the `common' passenger carriage. Benefit of some people wanting to kiss your arse if they think it'll make them look better he thought.
“Well maybe you should look for something to do, or just stop complaining” Mustang ventured as he went back to staring out the window. “And what's the matter with you Mustang?” Ed `asked' believing he already knew the answer, it was fairly obvious since he had been this way from when Riza had tag along.
“I'm just wondering why you had to let Riza tag along, it's not a good idea” Mustang replied grouchily. “Well like I said -“Mustang cut Ed off. “Yeah, yeah `she's capable of looking out for herself' I know but still I don't like the idea of her coming along, things could get rather…… Hairy” Mustang said turning back to stare at Ed.
“Well maybe if you had actually warned me I would have tried to persuade her to stay back at Eastern HQ” Ed said staring right back. “Ah, but if I had warned you then more then likely you wouldn't have elected to undertake this mission” Mustang countered right back with a small `I-know-you-too-well' grin.
“Yeah probably, but its half way done now so I'm not pulling out and you might as well tell me exactly why the Fuhrer is only now worried about the location of the `raw material' for the stone” Ed said the air in the carriage becoming deadly serious. “We'll just go get something to eat” Al said nervously trying, and succeeding, at getting himself, Armstrong and Riza out of the carriage so Ed and Mustang could safely disclose the dangerous information without putting anyone else at risk, given that they both preferred to carry the danger themselves then put those around, and close, to them at risk.
Once there was only the two of them in the carriage Mustang turned back to Ed with a deadly serious expression “someone from the past has reappeared, some close to the old Fuhrer” he said. “Who?” Ed asked more then well aware of Mustang's emotions towards the old Fuhrer/Homunculus who he had confronted and killed.
“Shou Tucker” Mustang said his voice dropping to a whisper. “Tucker” Ed whispered his voice trailing off as the memories of the mad alchemist/chimera who had used his own daughter in a twisted experiment before going completely off the deep end as a guinea pig/alchemist in lab 5, then dedicating himself to trying to get his hands on the stone himself so he could create a homunculus version of his deceased daughter came back to Ed, who sat there stunned for several seconds.
Ed loathed Tucker, he loathed him as much as he hated Scar for all the lives he had twisted, perverted and destroyed in his insane quest to perfect his `craft' of creating chimera's for whatever, clearly self-conceited, reason one would create a chimera. “Tucker's re-emerged?” Ed said in shock.
“It seems so, though at the moment we've only spotted chimera's we know he created and follow him, but rest assured that whatever reason he's got for becoming an active exile it surely requires the stone” Mustang said, his one obsidian black eye full of a powerful mix of disgust and barely contained anger.
“ So we have to get the second half of the `stone material', somehow avoid Tucker and his `minions', then either destroy or safely conceal the stone `material'?....... Great” Ed huffed in annoyance, his chin coming to rest on his open palm as he rested his elbow on the window sill.
“You could have at least warned me about all this” he said not looking at Mustang, “it's not like I won't do it or anything its just that now that the jobs become just this much harder I'm annoyed with your need to keep everything so secret and low key” he said his gold eyes coming to rest on Mustangs face for a second before staring back out the window at the zooming landscape.
“What would you have me do? Tell you about Tucker in front of Winry and Al?” Mustang said in annoyance. “Of course not!” Ed snapped “I just think you could have told me that's all” he said trying to keep his voice under control. “I am telling you” Mustang replied smugly, causing Ed to roll his eyes.
“I meant sooner” he held up a hand to keep Mustang quiet “look, I appreciate you telling me this, and I understand why you'd want to keep this as secret as possible, but if you had of told me I would have been more inclined to arrange everything so we couldn't be followed” Ed said with a small defeated sigh.
“You think we were followed?” Mustang asks a curious, almost disbelieving, look on his face. “No doubt in my mind, Tucker knows that I'm the only one who knows exactly were the remaining `raw material' is and so he would have set someone to follow us once he caught wind of this mission” Ed said, his voice low and full of a carefully balanced mix of worry and frustration.
“I doubt we were followed Ed” Mustang said “the only people who know about this mission are the military high up's and possibly military intelligence, so you need not worry about the possibility of us being followed” he said waving away Ed's statement, as if it were nothing.
“Yeah right, you'll have to forgive me if I doubt Tucker doesn't already know. And since the militaries high up's know I'm almost certain he knows about us already” he said folding his arms and rolling his eyes. Mustang was about to comment on Ed's lack of respect when Ed spoke up once more.
“Besides, if he does know we can use it too our advantage” he said with a coy smile. “Really? Just how do you suggest we do that?” Mustang said disinterested. “Simple really” Ed said shuffling forward on the seat slightly so he was with quiet whispering range of Mustang “what we do is………”
The train lurched into a bend sending the chimera sprawling across the roof of the train car and thus denying it from overhearing Ed's plan. But it didn't matter; the chimera had heard enough to know that they were fully aware of him tracking them, which meant he had half completed the mission master had given him.
His flat lizard tongue flickered out across his cracked dry lips as he planted the bare pads of his fingers and toes onto the roof of the car, sticking himself to its surface for better purchase and stability. His tatty, ripped and generally disgustingly dirty robes fluttered outwards behind him like some foul parody of an insects wings.
A dangerous glint came to his beady white eyes as he thought of how better to please master. His tail kept ridged for better balance he crouched as low as possible, in case of upcoming tunnels, and tasted the air once more. He knew he couldn't touch the alchemists, master had forbidden it saying he would handle them himself, yet he wanted nothing more then to tear apart the golden hair one for what he had done to his former master Greed.
But it's time would come, the chimera knew that, and then! Oh yes, then I'll show you what I'm capable of when I stand and fight alchemist, you'll see that you've been lucky that I've run away every time so far that happy thought going around and around in it's head the chimera placed its ear back to the train car roof in the hopes of overhearing something its master could use to his advantage.
A/U: Not my best chapter I'll admit, but not bad either you have to give me that! The reason I chose Tucker over the homunculi was a thought out one that you'll find out about in either two or three chapters time. Anyway that's about it for this time so please let me know what you think. Later……
