Chapter 6: The other half, CHASE ME CHASE ME!
Man, feels like its been forever since I was here.
Stepping off the train Ed stretched his back, his spine making a cracking sound as he did so, and yawned. After two days journey by train they had finally reached their destination, Dublith, not that I really want to be here, true Ed could think of half a dozen places he'd rather be and for two good reasons.
And here's one now he thought glumly, his shoulders hunching forward in defeat, as he spied the massive frame of his late teachers husband Sig through the press of the crowd. Yeah Mustang, finding the two halves of the `stone' will be a breeze, yeah right Ed thought dejectedly.
Noticing a rather dejected looking Al beside him Ed sighed dramatically “what's the matter with you?” he asks. “Oh, um…… Nothing” Al said giving off a nervous laugh, his hand going to the back of his head. “Yeah right…….. Well if you aren't going to tell me then fine, besides we have more important things to do” Ed said with a huff of annoyance at his younger brother's nervousness.
Turning his attention back to the massive Sig he could see, Ed decided to be direct about all this “YO! BIG MAN OVER HERE!” Ed yelled. Sig's massive frame turned and the two of them locked eyes for a second, then Sig smiled a full warm smile “Oh, Edward long time no see!” he yelled back through the crowd.
“You still run this place huh?”
Ed sat himself down at the table as he asked Sig the question. He truly had been somewhat surprised to find out that Sig was still operating the butcher's shop he had, seemingly, run forever. “Yeah, still doing business and I can tell by both the look on your face and your choice of company” he said with a nod towards Mustang, Riza and Armstrong “that's why you're here” the massive man said.
Ed let out a slight sigh, his eyes locking onto the table as he tipped his head forward ever so slightly “its about the stone” he mumbled, his voice suddenly weakened in embarrassment. “I figured as much, since you two never really visit that often” Sig said with a shrug of his massive shoulders.
“It's not like that” Ed snapped in embarrassment “you know I'd come around more often if it wasn't for the fact that I've been busy trying to get mine and Winry's business off the ground” he explained. “So you finally left the military?” Sig asked him. “Yeah, I left just after we got Al's body back, teacher knew that much” Ed said. “I see, no wonder she was so proud of you until the end” Sig said a note of sorrow in his voice.
“Well um…… I kind of left something here with teacher, I couldn't think of anyone else to trust with it since she taught me everything I know about respecting the balance of life when it comes to alchemy, and I kind of need to get it back, if that's okay?” Ed said his voice trailing off in embarrassment.
“Of course, I assume you mean the jar, I buried it in the backyard just after Izumi passed on, you won't be able to miss it” Sig said managing a small smile. “I only moved it like that because I was afraid that someone might find out about it and come looking for……. Whatever it is, this towns notorious for thief's trying to get their hands on alchemist stuff, especially recently” Sig said with a small shrug of non-interest.
“Oh, okay well thanks anyway Sig, I'll make sure to put the earth back once it's up” Ed said rising and swiftly moving towards the rear door. Mustang and Al followed, though Riza and Armstrong stayed behind for some reason. Striding out into the mid morning sun Ed tipped his head back and allowed himself a few seconds of simple yet honest enjoyment from the suns warm rays.
Slowly opening his eyes Ed felt rather stupid, but something deep inside him had whispered he should enjoy this moment of a simple goal nearly completed for some reason. Stupid being stupid, you sound like one of those old crones in the town square who say they know your fate and prattle on endlessly about their `premonitions' and `six sense' he told himself.
Looking around the neatly trimmed backyard, I'm sure he doesn't do that himself, Ed saw the bump in the otherwise flat ground. “That's it guys” he said striding over to the `mound'. “Okay, but how do we dig it up?” Al asked, “Just look for a couple of shovels and then will start digging” Ed replied as he crouched down beside the mound.
Al disappeared into the tool shed at the other side of the yard, “so this is where it is” Mustang said crouching down across from Ed. Ed nodded “I can only guess, I left it here with teacher because I knew she wouldn't be tempted to use it, much less reveal its existence to anyone” Ed's eyes were distant and unfocused with past memories “she always seemed so determined to not disturb the natural balance of the world or try and go back to when everything seemed so much simpler, I'm not surprised she went peacefully but at least she left one hell of a legacy” Ed said looking up with a small smile crossing his features as he felt a wave of certainty and genuine pride for his teacher “she was always my hero, strange as that may seem” he said still smiling, then he jumped as a shovel dug into the ground beside him.
Looking up he saw Al standing there beaming with a smile himself “you always did know who's example to follow and who's not” he said before his eyes drifted to the mound “this would be much easier with alchemy” he said musing aloud. “Yeah well, you can't use alchemy around the `stone material' because you'll never know what will happen, it could do absolutely nothing at all, no alchemic effect what-soever, or it could vastly expand your effect and create a roar canyon” Ed stated making Al blink in shock and embarrassment.
“Alright” Ed said standing, rolling up his jackets sleeves, and grabbing a hold of a shovel “let's get this done” he said digging the shovel into the ground. Several silent hours past as the three of them dug up the remaining half of the `stones material'. The afternoon sun was warm on their shoulders and they all felt a light sweat breaking out over themselves as they physically moved the earth of the mound.
Finally they got deep enough to were they could no longer use the shovels for fear of hitting and breaking the container that had the `stone material' within it. By this point both Mustang and Al, both of whom weren't as used to manual labour as Ed, had quite digging. So Ed continued on his own, the pile of freshly removed earth growing bigger and bigger by the second.
When Ed's finger tips scrapped against the rough texture of glass a small smirk lighted up his face “found it” he said digging his hands into the soil and yanking hard enough to pull the milk bottle free. Wiping the dirt from the bottle Ed pulled himself from the hole and held up the glass bottle, the strong shafts of sun light making the liquid within positively glitter in a shade of deep pink.
Al's chuckle of amusement drew Ed's attention away from the bottle, and caused his eyebrow to rise in a look that conveyed a sarcastic question of `what's so humorous?' “Glad to see you get the joke” Ed said with a smirk. “Yeah, I get it, put it in the one thing you think will repulse people as much as it does you” Al said a big smile plastered on his face.
“Nope, not really just figured it was rather funny to put it in milk bottles for some reason” Ed said with a shrug. Ed turned to Mustang (okay so now that the mission is fin-“Ed was cut off when a blur of tatty, grim covered robes rushed passed him grabbing the bottle and rushing to the end of the backyard.
As the bundle of ragged robes came to a stop Ed instantly recognised it as the dammed chimera that he had chased through the streets of Dublith all those years ago, “You, give that back right now” Ed growled not in the mood for this creatures games. “Well if you want it you'll have to chase me!” it yelled leaping over the fence and dashing away.
“Dam it” Ed growled noticing Al had clapped his hands and was ready to use alchemy, “don't you idiot, didn't you hear what I said before?” he `asked'. “Then what do you suggest we do?” Mustang asked calmly. “It's simple” Ed said eyeballing them both before taking a couple of steps towards the fence “we follow the little pain in the neck” he said quickly leaping over the fence and chasing after the over excited chimera, Al and Mustang right behind him.
A/U: Well, right place to end it I think, for now. Just to let ya'll know, I don't know when (or if) I'll be able to continue this `cause I'm reformatting my PC and I'm not sure if I'll have the internet up and running until several weeks, or months, time. So enjoy it while you can and I'll see you LATER…….
