Chapter 2: Mission, parting kisses.

 

Ed was awoken by the soft caress of Roses lips venturing all over him.

He waited until she had lightly kissed his mouth before creaking his eyes open a mischievous, impish smile spreading across his face. “Winry?” he `asked' knowing what her response would be. “Since when have you and Winry slept together huh?” Rose `asked' knowing where this was heading.

“All the time” he said still smiling. “Then maybe she should share your bed from now on” Rose said faking annoyance. “Maybe” Ed said “except for one thing” he said still smiling. “What's that?” Rose asked one eyebrow rising in a questioning `glare'. “She's not nearly as much fun to tease as you” he replied quickly stealing a kiss before leaping off the bed and darting into the bathroom. “Hey!” Rose shouted after his retreating form, “no fair” she replied with a huff of annoyance.

 

Warm water washed over Ed soothing and awaking him in one fell swoop.

Not that Ed needed much soothing, emotional soothing anyway. After last night he felt far, far better about where he stood in Rose's heart. Of course he still had questions and doubts, but then he guessed he always would.

He was cut off from following this train of thought when Rose suddenly jumped in the shower with him. “Rose!” he exclaimed genuinely shocked and surprised. “Ah come on, let's play just a little more” she said giggling like a schoolgirl before lightly starting to kiss his shoulders and neck.

It took every ounce of willpower within Ed to push her back slightly “there's not enough room in here for that Rose, once we're out of here okay?” he asked turning her around and hugging her to him. “No fair” she replied mock pouting “fine have it your way mister but you'll pay for this” she said throwing threatening glances over her shoulder. “I always do” Ed said drawing a giggle from Rose, who failed to notice the dark cloud that passed behind his eyes.

 

“You never did answer my question” Ed said taking a bite from his toast, and getting a perplexed look from Rose. “You love me, why?” he asked. “You're still going over this, I thought we settled this last night” Rose said shaking her head. “Obviously not” Ed said swallowing the bite of toast and waiting for Rose to speak.

“Alright fine” she said with a slow shake of her head amazed he would keep at this, “I love you because I just do, I don't know just why but I do, the heart wants what it wants I guess” she said. “That's not really a reason, what is it about me that you love?” Ed asked.

Rose sighed “you can't let this go can you?” she asked half annoyed. “Nope” Ed said shaking his head “I know that emotions aren't always reasonable and that I shouldn't look for logic and reason behind everything, but I can't help myself” he said.

“Your telling me this like I didn't already know it?” Rose said “fine, I love you because your you Ed. You strong, smart, confident, knowledgeable, determined and sensitive and committed and caring all at once”.

She smiled across the table at him “and let's not forget, really good in bed”. Ed simply smirked at her joke but the look of total gratitude in his eyes said it all “Thank you Rose” he said his voice breaking. “Sure” she said jumping when he suddenly reached out and grabbed her wrist. “No, I mean it Rose, thank you for everything, if you weren't in my life I-I……” his voice caught in his throat as Rose saw him unable to get his words out.

“Ed?” she asked unsure and not entirely comfortable with where this conversation was heading. Ed put a finger to Rose's lips “Sh, I just want you to know how much I love you Rose, you're the only thing that matters to me”. Rose was about to ask where this had come from but she was cut off by the telephone ringing.

“I'll get it” Ed said breaking off the intensity of the moment by smiling at Rose as he stood up. The phone rang a full four times before Ed managed to get to it. “Hello, Ed here” Rose watched as he stood in the hallway his back to her, his head nodding as he simply `ah ha'd' the person on the other end before hanging up after the conversation was clearly finished.

“Who was it?” Rose asked rising to her feet. “General Mustang, apparently I'm to report to central command at once for briefing on my new mission” a look of slight frustration crossed Rose's face. “But you've only been back for a couple of weeks” she said disappointedly. “Can't be helped, you know that. And since I'm now a Major I have to go where they tell me and do what they order me to like a good little doggy” Ed said a annoyed smirk crossing his face, “Woof woof” Rose said jokingly to lighten the mood.

 

The coach was sitting outside their house waiting to continue its journey to central. “I love you” Ed said stealing a kiss as he mounted its side step. “And I love you” Rose said taking one last long kiss. “Promise you'll come back alright” Rose said eyes full of silent pleading, “I promise Rose” Ed said his eyes full of the kind of confidence that only he could pull off and not be called arrogant.

One last kiss, one last tender embrace and they separated. As the coach begun to pull away Rose felt tears come to here eyes. This always happened and was the worst part of her relationship with Ed. Put she knew that it was part and parcel of being with Ed or Major Full metal as the state knew him.

Ed turned from the slowly fading image of Rose in their front yard. He sighed and turned around to be confronted with the coach's other passengers. Al and Roy were sitting there looking at him Al on the same side as the coach as Ed. Suddenly Roy opened his mouth and it was just like old times.

“I promise I'll be back Rose” He said in his mocking over theatrical way of having a laugh while making kissing motions into the air. “Sod you Mustang” Ed said a small smile across his face the old rebellious 15 year old coming to the surface. Al on the other hand had started laughing, and he had an infectious laugh that soon had them all laughing out loud.

“Oh man, its good to see you again Al” Ed said wiping away a tear in the corner of his eye. “You too brother” Al said smiling. “So what's the deal Mustang? It must be very important if you've been ordered to re-unite the world famous Elric brothers for a mission”.

“It is Ed” Mustang said pulling out two folders from his briefcase next to him on the seat. “The two of you are heading to the far west, it seems some homunculus have popped up over there and are causing some serious mayhem” Ed was dumbfounded. “Homunculus? But I thought we took care of them all years ago?” Roy simply shook his head.

“Do you have any idea how many Alchemists before and after you have tried a human transmutation without the philosopher's stone?” Ed shook his head, “me neither, but its safe to assume its more then we would like to imagine, for all we know there could be hundreds of them out there, and some of them must know alchemy”.

Ed sighed “so yet again we have to spill more blood and burden ourselves with yet more guilt because someone else hasn't done their job properly and we're left to mend things” Roy's frown drew Ed's attention. “What? Well I'm right aren't i?” he `asked' getting a sigh in response.

“Not quiet, seems the military is apprehensive to go after them, especially after Lior, so the three of us will be sent in to try and remedy this situation without any human casualty's” Ed looked puzzled. “The three of us? You mean you're coming with us Mustang?” Roy simply smiled.

“Seems that my commanders don't want me getting rusty in my battle prowess so I've been officially ordered to accompany you both given your…… Reputation” Ed snorted. “Oh great, Mustang the baby sitter, as if Armstrong hadn't been bad enough now I have to deal with you looking over my shoulder” Al chose that moment to butt in.

“Come on brother, I think it might be could, catch up, reminisce about older times, and bash some homunculus skulls what more could three old friends want?” Ed snorted once more. “Easy for you to say Al, you've always wanted to hang around Mustang” he sighed.

“But since I have no choice, I guess I'll comply” he shoot a glare at Roy “let's just make this quick so I can get back home where I belong”.

 

A/U: Wah hoo! Two chapters in one day am I on a roll or what? Just before I get flamed let me explain why Ed and Rose are a better couple then Ed and Winry……. Um……. Okay I don't have a reason but you have to admit that it's such a nice coupling and besides I'm a Rose fan to the core yippee.

Seriously though, I know there wasn't any violence in this chapter or lemon (it was hinted at though) but I'm building the story. How long will it go? I don't know, I'm still trying to think of where the next chapter will go. Anyway any response is welcomed (positive or negative) so please tell me what you think. Later……
