Chapter 4: Sea battle, interrogations.

“I'm bored”.
Ed was leaning against the ships railing Roy standing beside him. Everybody else apart from the two of them and Al had headed to the front of the boat to catch a glimpse of the island western commanded was situated on. “Well go do something” Roy suggested.
“Great idea Mustang but there isn't anything to do, this ship is full of pointless crap” he said with a huff “and the people don't want anything to do with me” he said. “Well maybe if you had decided to travel in plain clothes instead of wearing that coat with the state alchemist symbol on it” Ed shrugged. To not wear his cherished coat made no sense to him and he said as much.
“But aren't we supposed to travel incognito?” Al asked pulling his full brim hat down and flicking the collar of his brown coat up mimicking Roy in his black coat and hat. “And what if we're being tailed? Have you both thought about that Al? We'd need bait to draw our pursuers out to confront us and who better to be the bait then me? The world famous `full metal alchemist'?” he asked.
Roy shrugged “that's if we're being t-“ his voice trailed off as he looked down the walkway “we've got company”. Ed turned his head and saw them coming towards them. Their skin alabaster white, their eyes glinting with unnatural lights. Ed turned to face them and spoke over his shoulder “Al, go get the civilians off the boat” he said. “But I can fight” Al said in protest.
“Now Al!” Ed yelled in a tone that brokered no disagreement. “Okay” Al said as Ed turned his attention back to the other two. “Edward Elric” one said its voice a sibilant whisper that disgusted Ed to the core, “And Roy Mustang” the other said its voice a perfect copy of the other. “Your time has come” they said in union drawing a smirk from Ed as he clapped his hands together his metal arm transmuting a great blade that extended from his wrist.
“Is that so?” he said mockingly “I've heard that from many tougher people then you homunculi” he said jumping forward. Just the mere sight of them brought up a mixture of disgust and fury within Ed that he had thought he had left behind years ago. He tapped into this dangerously powerful cocktail of emotion knowing it would lend him the determination and strength that had made him so famous.
The homunculus showed no fear or hesitation, simply launching themselves at himself and Roy in anger. One moved towards Roy, a seemingly slender hauntingly beautiful woman leapt at Roy whilst the other, a tall lanky male with a shaven head and covered in tattoo's leapt at Ed.
Blade meet unnatural flesh as Ed saw a small flash of flame from the corner of his eye. His blade slid clean through the homunculus's arm right up to the elbow. Before the homunculus could react Ed transmuted its arm into wood and shattered it with one kick of his automail leg.
“Dam you” the homunculus said through teeth gritted in anger making Ed chuckle mockingly. “I told you tougher opponents have tried and failed to end me” crouching down Ed clapped his hands together and launched himself at the legs of the homunculus.
With lightening quick movements Ed transmuted the homunculus's legs into stiff pillars of cedar. Rising up to his full height behind it Ed smirked. He had been dying to try this on a homunculus; really it was just an alternative version of how he had disposed of Sloth.
Gripping the homunculus by the back of the neck with his automail arm Ed slammed his other hand, open palmed against its spine turning it to stiff birch. Stepping away and around it Ed smirked as the homunculus tried to grab him almost snapping its spine with its movements.
“Now just stand there whilst I take care of something” he said with a smirk as he ducked under the homunculus's frenzied swipe. And grabbed the second homunculus, who was back stepping away from Roy's flames, by the back of the neck. Before she could gasp or even blink she had been transmuted into plywood.
He smirked at Roy “you do the honours Mustang” he said simply stepping back. With a click of his fingers Roy set the stiff plywood homunculus ablaze. “No!” Ed was caught off guard when the male homunculus came out of nowhere and slammed into the back of him. Ed was sent sprawling into the ground the wind being knocked from him in a whoosh.
He was shocked that the homunculus had performed alchemy, but not really as he had seen it before. As Ed looked around dazed he noticed the male homunculus wrap his arms around the female and dove through the wall into the cabins. Jumping to his feet Ed stuck his head into the new door for the cabins.
He looked left and right before turning back to Roy “come on, we've got to finish this before anyone innocent gets hurt” Roy simply nodded and followed him through the gap into the room. Exiting the room they stood in the hall “I'll go left you go right” he said to Roy.
Ed peeled off moving through the halls, his real hand holding his metal arm its blade still standing out his body tense in preparation for a real struggle. As he moved through the halls Ed half expected the homunculus to jump out at him at every moment.
As the smell of burnt wood became stronger and stronger Ed followed it until he found himself standing in the doorway to the deserted engine room. The male homunculus was kneeling in the middle of the room cradling something in its arms. Even from behind Ed could tell it was crying, its shoulders rising and falling in the jerking erratic motion everybody did when they cried.
Its words however cut him to the bone “fury, fury my sweet fury, don't go please don't leave me” Ed stood there confused. He had loved her that much was now obvious and it drained all the hate and anger from him. He had separated this homunculus from the only comfort it had ever known, he had been so blinded by his hate that he had done something unforgivable in separating two lovers forever.
The man looked up but didn't turn around “just kill me and get it over with” he said without looking back. Ed sighed, he couldn't do it, and he could no longer bring himself to kill the homunculus even if it was a mercy killing. “No” he stated simply transmuting his automail arm back to normal.
“What?” the homunculus asked rising and turning towards him. “You kill me now alchemist” he said voice dripping with venomous hatred “or you can join my precious Fury in death” he said lunging forward, his clawed hands outstretched towards Ed. Rose flashed before his eyes and Ed reacted on instinct.
He couldn't be separated from Rose, he simply wouldn't allow it. And so he did the one thing he could think of, something he hadn't done for years. With lightening quick movements Ed moved to the side and grabbed the homunculus's face in his real hand. A sudden splat of blood gushed out of the back of the homunculus's head, spraying Ed in the face before its now lifeless body slumped to the ground.
How long did Ed stand there in shock staring at his flesh hand, the homunculus's blood still covering his face? He wasn't sure, but when Roy and Al finally arrived and took in the scene in they both stood there for a second before Roy spoke “we're docking”

“Welcome to western command brigadier general Mustang”
The commanding officer sounded far too cheery for Ed's liking, but then after what he had just done on the boat almost everything seemed far too cheery for his liking. Al and Roy knowing him well enough knew to leave him in silence for now to deal with it as best he could. Knowing he would still follow out his mission.
The commanding officer was a desk jockey, having never seen a battle or even skirmish in his life and as such all three of them, battle scarred veterans as they were, mostly ignored him. “I hope you enjoy your s-“he was cut off by Roy holding up a hand. Roy was now in full uniform, and it made him look all the more stern. “Save it solider, we're here on official business, by special request of the fuehrer himself we've been ordered to take over the investigation into your homunculus….. Problem” he stated flatly.
“Ah but of course” the officer said reminding Ed all too much of Yoki for his liking “here are the files on all our resident, none state alchemists and they await your questioning” he said handing over a handful of folders to Roy. Ed watched this in silence wishing he was already out of this oversized office.
As they stepped out the office Roy handed half the folders to him and Al “you guys take care of that lot, I'll handle the others” both Ed and Al nodded.

The door opened with a creak of unoiled hinges.
Ed strolled over to the desk in the centre of the room and sat on one of the chairs, Al taking the one directly beside him. Across from them sat a middle age man, with remarkably indistinct features. He held up his cuffed hands “isn't this a bit excessive?” he asked.
“Can't be too careful with alchemists who try human transmutations” Ed said coldly a frown creasing his features. Al wasn't surprised at all by Ed's demeanour; he was always this way after a fight in which a death had to happen. And while Al couldn't understand why he was always this gloomy and intense, still it made he good at being the `bad cop' so to speak.
“Human transmutation? Me? I'd neve-“His denial was cut short by Ed slamming his hands, open palmed, down on the table. “Don't bullshit us!” he yelled startling both the suspect and Al “ we have your history, we know about your daughter about the three weeks you disappeared to another island only to return changed” Ed said moving around the table “and we know you can transmute without a transmutation circle” he stated finally crouching down beside the suspect.
“So you might as well tell us where you did it so we can get out of here” Al watched the mans eyes begin to quiver in fear. “I-I never…… I've never….” His voice trailed off rambling denials. Al could see how ticked off Ed was, and yet how closely restrained he was keeping himself.
“It's pointless, you talk to this trash nag Al before I cut him a second asshole big enough for the bullshit he's feeding us” Ed told him turning to leave. “Wait Ed!” Al yelled chasing Ed out the room in a scurry.
“Brother wait” Al shouted chasing down the hallway after Ed. Something was up with Ed, but then again something was always up with Ed Al knew that. Reaching out he grabbed his brother left arm and froze at the feel of cold metal under his fingers. “Brother your arm?....” he asked in confusion. “Just leave it Al” Ed grumbled.
“But you said you trans-“Al was cut off when Ed spun around. “I said leave it Al!” he yelled fury creasing his features. Al knew that look well, and it meant Ed was beating himself up over something. Inwardly he sighed, when wasn't Ed beating himself up over something?
Before he could ask what it was Ed stomped off his movements tense with pent up frustration. Sighing Al turned back to the interrogation.

Ed sighed as he watched the sunset.
Why couldn't Al juts leave things alone? How was he supposed to tell Al that rather then regain his old limbs he had chosen to keep his automail limbs because he felt he deserved this punishment even now? His gold eyes swept across the scene below him.
The small city that surrounded the headquarters was bustling with activity, yet even with all the all too human distractions around him Ed managed to focus on the setting sun and its reflection off the ocean.
He sighed once more, he felt cold in spite of the early autumn heat but why? Perhaps, well no perhaps, it was because of what had happened on the boat. He had seen a homunculus cry at the death of his lover and it had almost cost Ed to cause Rose more pain then he ever wanted to cause her.
“Full metal” a voice said behind him drawing his attention. “Mustang” he said as the older general sat beside him. “You look like you need a drink Ed” Roy said producing a carry flask from his inside breast pocket. Ed simply nodded “couldn't hurt” he said taking the flask and having a small swig.
The strong, burning taste of whiskey flooded his senses making Ed cough slightly. He wasn't a drinker anyway “So what's got you all gloomy?” Roy asked a small smirk flickering across his lips “apart from the usual”. Ed grumbled incoherently before taking another, slightly bigger swig “you ever wondered what separates us from the homunculus?” he asked.
“I try not to think about these things” Roy said taking the flask back and having a swig himself. “Figures” Ed said with a huff resting his chin on his folded arms “you always struck me as the kind who shuts off the brain too much” he mumbled half-heartedly mocking Roy.
“And you think too much, always burdening yourself with pointless guilt trips” Roy said. “Maybe” Ed replied “but I can't help it, after everything I've seen and done I feel like I owe the world a lot” He said his eyes following a lone farm and cart as they pushed through the crowds.
Roy was smart enough to know not to push the issue with Ed “well as long as it doesn't interfere with the mission think all you want” he watched as a smirk flickered across Ed's lips. “Aye aye Mustang” Ed said snapping off a mock salute and making Roy sigh. “Just like old times, yeah right Al” he thought with a shrug.
A/U: Well that was a long `un wasn't it? Still with the first lashings of violence and blood I feel a bit more comfortable with Ed being so sulky. And before anyone says anything, I know Ed normally transmutes things into metal but when I had the idea for the plywood vs. flame bit it was just too good to pass up on. It's all starting to pick up now, where will the next chapter lead mr `doom and gloom' Elric? Well wait and see. Later….
