Chapter 8: The team, Back Alley brawl.
The commanding officer of the West paced back and forth.
This was taking to long; surely it was over by now. As if to answer his mental question the door to his office flew open. General Mustang, Major Al Elric their associated staff and Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong came strolling in. “G-General Mustang! Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong! I didn't expect to see you both so soon” he stammered nervously.
“I bet you didn't” Roy said eyeballing him. “S-Sir?” he asked starting to feel a shiver of fear running up his spine. “I believe Lieutenant Colonel that your department has a mole” Roy said nonchalant. “Sir there is no mole among my department I can assure you” he said feeling a tremor starting to course through his whole body.
“Is that so Colonel? Because if your correct that means there's a mole within my department, after all who else knew that we were coming here to investigate the appearance of these homunculus?” The Colonel could see he was cornered like a rat, to deny a `leak' within his department was to accuse the Generals staff of having a rat amongst them, and one look at this small group of hardened veterans told him they were loyal to the death.
“I see sir, I shall start an investigation into the matter right away” he said snapping off a salute. “I'm going to save you that problem Colonel, me and my team will be investigating this with the help of internal investigations from central” Roy said a ghost of a smirk flickering across his face as he watched the Colonel twitch nervously under his gaze. “But sir, aren't you putting too much on your plate, no disrespect but you are investigating the homunculi full time anyway?”. Roy smirk became fully fledged “the two are linked Colonel, once one is dealt with the other will swiftly crumble” he said turning on his heels and marching from the room, his team rushing after him.
“Um…… Mustang?” Al asked him nervously. “Yes Al?” Roy said his eyes warming in a near fatherly manner as he looked at the younger Elric. “Do you know where Ed is?” he asked. Roy sighed; Ed was renowned for disappearing without letting Al know where he was. “He said he was going for a drink” the worried expression on Al face caught him off guard. “This isn't good” Al mumbled under his breath just loud enough for Roy to hear.
Why did he always drink when he was depressed?
Three hours of searching and Al had found Ed in the dingiest, most run down smoky pub in town. Ed had always dealt with his most serious issues by drinking, he wasn't an alcoholic but he often got pissed off his face. It seemed to be cathartic for Ed, he'd get pissed, pick a fight, kick some poor drunk bastards ass and pass out only to wake up feeling sore from head to toe.
But this was the first time he could remember Ed getting pissed in the middle of an investigation, and especially such a dangerous one as this! Truth be told he was annoyed with Ed for being this reckless and stubbornly selfish. But what could he do? Nothing while he was drunk.
Striding over to the bar he taped Ed on the shoulder. Ed stared over at his shoulder his mind obviously taking a few moments to remember who he was. “Hey Al!” he said drunkenly, “Hey everybody, this is my brother Al!” Ed shouted standing shakily and throwing one arm around him while the other held aloft a nearly empty bottle of bourbon.
It was then that Al spotted them, a group of at least five homunculi eye balling them both with pure contemptment. “Brother” Al whispered trying to gain Ed's attention, “I know Al” Ed whispered back clearly getting the message “they followed me in, I was about to try and call the base to get some back up” he said to him.
“I think we better go Ed” Al said starting to drag his brother towards the door. Once there Al threw a gaze over his shoulder and saw the homunculi starting to slowly rise from their table. “Shit!” Al cursed as Ed burped drunkenly “I hope your coherent enough to either run for it or fight your way out of this own” Al growled to his brother pushing the door with his body.
“Ah shit!” they had made it as far as half way down the alley before they had become surrounded by homunculi. “Ed?” Al looked at his older brother who was giggling like a school kid “ED!” Al shout of frustration was accompanied by him violently shaking him.
“Oh yeah….. Er, Sorry?” Ed said scratching the back of his head as he seemed to sober up rather quickly. “Save it, we've got serious problems” he growled in a clearly pissed off tone eyes moving slowly from homunculus to homunculus as he tried to count their number.
25? That was the best he could come up with “any suggestions?” he growled. “Just one” Ed replied in a sloppy, stumbling mumbled whispered his own eyes travelling from homunculus to homunculus as well. Al balked as Ed leapt forward clapping his hands together.
He landed on the shoulders of two homunculi who where standing shoulder-to-shoulder slamming his hands into their heads. He pushed off them and landed perfectly. It surprised Al that even drunk his brother was able to move with such normality.
Those thoughts were quickly wiped away when the two homunculi exploded! “What the-“he stopped when he realised where his brother had learnt to do that. It seemed his brother was well prepared to fight evil with evil. A smirk flickered across his lips, well that made two of them.
Diving forward he clapped his hands together and pressed them against the rather portly gut of one homunculus. His face was suddenly covered in a shower of blood as the homunculus's midsection vanished in an instant. Rising he slammed his hands against the faces of two stunned homunculi and gripped their skulls with his full might.
As their heads exploded Al and Ed where suddenly swamped in a press of ice cold human shaped bodies. The feel of their clawed hands and grave smelling breaths made Al want to vomit. He continued to fight as they tried to drag him down.
He wasn't even able to see his brother through the press of bodies, the only indication he had that his brother was fine was the constant low percussion thud of exploding homunculi.
Despite being over numbered the two brothers fought back-to-back virtually for an hour or so. As the last couple of homunculi ran off screaming something about “hellish human devils” Al watched them go, both of them not quiet willing to go following them.
They both crouched there amidst the slaughter they had performed bleeding through half a dozen cuts panting at the physical exertion they had gone through. “Just like old times hey Al?” Ed `asked' in between frantic breathes trying to steady his breath. Al laughed nervously noticing Ed seemed totally sober now “ah, yeah apart from me carrying you from a bar and….. This” he said glancing around himself finally realising the level of brutality they had unleashed on their foes.
They both crouched there in silence for several moments before Ed spoke “I suppose we should call Mustang so he can get someone to clean this up”.
A/U: Wow, they got pretty savage there didn't they? Okay so maybe that was a `tad' O.O.C but it serves a purpose. For those of you wondering I'm sort of basing the homunculi in this on the coven of vampires in Paris that Lestat takes on in the book THE VAMPIRE LESTAT by Anne Rice. And Filth? Well he's sort of a male version of the old hag queen vampire in the same book. Any questions from this chapter? If so, or any comments just post a review and I'll reply (I swear). Later…
