Chapter Five
Alphonse Elric didn’t know how he had gotten lost. He had found his way back to the church as the Father placed a body into a freshly dug grave. He stayed silent recognizing the body as one of the two boys that had been living with him.
“I’m sorry my son, I couldn’t protect you.” He said not knowing the armor bound boy was behind him.
/There are so many graves.../ Al thought as he looked into the yard. He counted over a hundred graves; many were marked with wooden crosses. Each cross had a rose vine planted near it. /Was this the garden that Mitsuko helped tend? / He thought noting how neat it was. A few wooden toys were placed on the graves of the children. /She made them. / He said kneeling to look at one. The small toy was a horse painted to look real. On it’s base was a name of a young boy and his birth year and death year. /He was only five. / Al noted. His armor clinked.
Rem heard the armor and knew the alchemist‘s brother was there. “I’m sorry, Doctor Yashiro involved this village. He hoped that his creations would help the village prosper. Instead, it ended up being a curse.” He looked up at the armor. “We couldn’t do anything to stop it once it started. It was the price he paid for trying to do God’s work.” Rem said quietly.
“I’m sorry Father.” Al stammered after a moment, realizing the man was looking at him.
“It wasn’t your fault my son.” He finished covering the grave picking up a small potted plant, emptying it into his hand. He planted the plant over the grave. “Are the others with you?”
“No, I got separated from them. We were attacked and they took my brother.”
“Who attacked you?” He looked worried.
“That creepy lady, she had blond hair.”
Ritsuko closed her eyes as they made it to the house. Brenda, Hawkeye and Mustang went to the door of the van. /No. I’m not going in as a toy this time. I won’t let them ruin another child’s life. / She thought trying to psyche herself up so that she could go with them inside.
“Hughes, if we don’t make it back in an hour get these two to Central, maybe the doctors can find something to cure the child.” Mustang ordered looking at his friend. “You’re staying here; we don’t need you getting caught again. Right now you’re one of the only ones that know what they did here. We’ll need you to be a witness.” Roy said as Ritsuko went to the door. She glanced up at him.
/His eyes... he’s telling me to stay so I don’t have to relive that nightmare. / She thought as he gave her a small smile.
“We’ll try to find Alphonse as well.” Hughes said noting the girl’s reaction to Roy’s order. He relaxed slightly seeing her ease a bit. /We’re so close to where she’s been through hell. I just hope that nothing else happens here. We don’t need her closing up anymore than she already has. /
“Thank you.” Ritsuko said quietly. When the door closed she rubbed her arms, curling up more under Mustang’s jacket. She could smell ash on the jacket, but didn’t care at the moment. It was helping fight off the cold chill she felt around her.
“You know if anyone has ever survived from the darts?” Maes asked hoping to draw her out and concentrate on something other than what happened to her in the house.
“I... I don’ know. She, she only used them on children, and they weren’t strong enough...” Sad eyes looked up at him. It was clear it was taking everything she had to keep from crying. She rubbed her eyes with the sleeve of the jacket. /I have to stay strong for Mitsu... She wanted to get me out of there. / Her stomach was churning as she sat there. Part of her wanted to run back to her room in the house. /I can’t go back... They’ll make it worse for me... At least here I won’t be a toy anymore.../ She thought shaking her head slightly.
/She’s going to lose it. / Maes thought. /We don’t need you breaking. / He added wishing he could calm her, but he was occupied with Mitsuko in his lap.
She looked up slightly. “I’m sorry. I must seem weak.” She said still keeping her voice low.
“You’ve had it rough. We don’t think you’re weak. Most people in your position wouldn’t have lived as long as you have and kept their sanity.” Falmon said looking over at her. “It’s okay; we won’t let them take you back okay?”
“....Boss... I can’t break into that place... The creatures around it are too strong...” Mitsuko whimpered as she flinched as if someone had hit her.
/What did they have her do? / Maes thought concerned. The little girl still didn’t wake. He gently brushed her hair back. She calmed some.
Ritsuko looked at her biting her lip. “They.... They trained her as a thief. It was to keep her out of their hair while they...” She said letting her words drop off not really wanting them to know what happened, though she was sure they had a strong idea of what had happened to her.
/While they hurt you. / Maes thought watching her rub her wrists. “It’s okay. We’re not going to let them hurt either of you again unless they go through us first okay?”
“He’s right. We’ll figure something out okay.” Falmon said hoping to calm her.
Ritsuko nodded as she listened to them. She felt Havoc shift a little in his sleep and looked down at him. The man looked peaceful at least. /It was only one of the sleepers. He’ll be fine when he wakes up. / She thought playing with his hair again. She had never seen anyone with hair like his or Edward’s before they had come to the village. /I should stop... He might not like it. / She thought putting her hands back in her lap
Riza stayed near Roy as they got to the house. It was a stone building two stories tall. The dark stone made the place seem to draw all color from around it. She caught Roy shudder slightly.
/Almost fitting about the look of this place with how it’s run by demons. / Roy thought keeping his mask up. /Edward please be okay. / He added in thought making his way to the porch. /It’s too quiet. /
/This place looks like something out of a nightmare. / She thought as Brenda shuttered.
“This place gives me the creeps.” He whispered. Riza nodded in agreement.
Roy tried the door. /Why am I not surprised it’s locked. / He saw the blood on the ground and touched it lightly. /Still fresh. / “Be on your guard inside. She’s only third rate, but her vines are deadly.” He warned.
Riza nodded shooting the lock pushing the door open. It slammed shut in her face. “What the...” She backed up slightly from the force of the door being shut.
/She knows I wouldn’t enter using flame if Edward’s in there.../ Roy thought. /That’s why she’s doing this. / “Stay back,” Roy said calmly, snapping his fingers. Flames engulfed the door, sending the vines holding the door closed back. “Let’s find Fullmetal and the Antidote. I don’t know what they stuck them with, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.” Roy bit back the rest of the comment he wanted to say. /I’d rather find him before that witch touches him. He may be a brat, but, he’s starting to grow on me.../ Roy thought. He saw stairs heading down and across the room a set going up. “Hawkeye, go take the basement. Brenda first floor.” He ordered.
Hawkeye looked at Roy. “Sir, be careful, they seemed to have an interest in you as well.”
“I know.” He strained a faint smile. She watched him head up the stairs drawing his gun as he went. “Fullmetal!”
Hawkeye made her way to the basement. “Edward!” She called scanning the main room seeing contraptions scattered around that made her wonder about the sanity of the people who lived there. /Some of them look like they have blood on them. / Riza fought a shudder as she picked her way across the room, only coming close to the devices when she had to. Smoke was starting to come down the stairs. /He must have lost control of it now. Hope he and Brenda are already out. / She thought. “Edward?” She called getting to the other side of the room. One panel looked different. /Hidden door? / She wondered.
Jordan had picked up his wife and headed out a back door, leading Envy to another building nearby.
“Shouldn’t we get the shrimp?”
“He’ll be fine. The building is stone. We need to get her to the doctor in the next town. Jan won’t live long unless we can get the bitch within the next few hours.”
“Is it soundproof?”
“The walls echo. It’s amazing she kept her sanity hearing everything going on in the house.”
Jordan’s men surrounded the van. They stood silently in wait.
/The military sent them here, and the village paid the price for it. / Falmon thought glancing a the child sized woman who was trying to stay calm, brushing he light colored hair out of Havoc’s sleeping face. /If things had been different, she might have made a good nurse. / He thought feeling a little envious of the other man. /Even unconscious he still gets the girls when Mustang’s not around. /
“Come on out bitch.” One of the men ordered.
Fury squeaked low seeing the men.
/Damn got distracted. These guys are cowards though. / Falmon thought to him self as he watched them.
Hughes carefully set the small child down, letting her stay bundled up in Hawkeye’s uniform jacket. The child moaned slightly, the only part of her able to be seen happened to be the red locks of hair that peeked out from under the makeshift blanket. Concerned blue eyes met frightened ones. “If you don’t mind, I’ll take care of them.” Maes said calmly. /They’ve done enough harm to these two girls. /
Ritsuko looked at the man when he offered to deal with the soldiers. She bit her lip not moving from where she sat.
Hughes took it as a yes, drawing one of his daggers. “Falmon cover me but stay in here. Fury, stay with the little princesses.” Hughes said flashing a wink to Ritsuko.
/Yeah, broken princess. / She thought feeling the sleeping man start to stir.
“...Ow...” Havoc muttered wincing slightly. He looked up seeing the small woman over him. Her face was turned away. From the view he had he could tell that the woman was perfectly shaped, even though she was smaller than Edward was. /What happened? / He thought trying to pull his mind off other things.
Falmon nodded keeping the gun within reach on the seat next to him.
Ritsuko glanced down at Havoc, blushing when she saw where his eyes were.
“Sorry.” He looked away when she crossed her arms protectively around herself.
“We told you to get out here.”
Havoc struggled to get to a halfway seated position. /Damn, feels like I was up all night drinking with the others. / He thought then noticed how pale the woman was.
Roy searched the rooms on the top floor, the fire seeming to stay in a controlled area by the door. /He has to be somewhere in here. / The dark haired man thought as he searched another room, finding nothing. /We couldn’t have given them time to do anything to him right? / Roy leaned against a wall glad the others were downstairs as visions he had thought he had forgotten surfaced. /I had hoped not to do this... I’d rather him not hate me. Though knowing Edward he thinks I'm using him as a puppet. / Roy thought smirking as the angered face of the blonde boy came to him. “Well, I guess it’s tough to fins someone so small in this place!” Roy yelled hoping to get a rise out of the teen.
There was no answer. Roy sighed getting to the last room on the floor. Carefully pushing the door open he found it was empty but for the tables full of plants and the chest at the other end of the room. He gave a small grin as he went for it. /If she’s still as organized as she was ten years ago, she has everything we’ll need in there. / He thought remembering the small girl that was waiting for an antidote. The floor cracked under his feet. /Brenda and Hawkeye better have gotten him out of here already. / He thought opening the chest and looking inside for the antidotes.
/Please let them be like they were last time.../ He grabbed one of each colored vial, slipping them into his pockets. /She might know which one is which. /
Ritsuko whimpered as another man fell. “...No.” She pulled up more into a ball. “Don’t hurt anyone else... I’ll... She looked down. “I’ll go with them.”
Hughes looked at the frightened woman. “That wouldn’t do that little girl any good now would it? If they back off I will too, but I’m not allowing a bunch of renegades to take anyone, especially a civilian who’s obviously been abused by the cretins. I’d be court-martialed for one thing. The other, it’s not my style to let a pretty girl get hurt.”
Havoc caught her arm weakly, making her yelp. “We’re trying to help you. Let him do this. It’s better to just let him go when he’s like this. Ask Boss when he gets back here.”
Ritsuko bit her lip. /They don’t know... I’m feeling every wound inflicted. Doesn’t help I’m still dealing with the drugs that Jan gave the light haired man... I’m fighting being sick. / She thought lowering her head. /I can’t let them know. I don’t want them worrying about my health. Mitsuko’s the important one. I can’t let them worry about me while she’s at death’s door. /
“I’m not hitting anything vital anyway. Just trying to keep them from shooting us. / Maes said keeping an eye out for anyone else.
“I... I can stall them until the others return.” She said moving to get out of the car. “I don’t want anyone else hurt because of me.”
Havoc grabbed her around her waist weakly holding her back. “We don’t need you in that possiion.” He replied, seeing she was fighting getting sick. She turned into him trembling a little. He wrapped his arms around her to try to calm her.
“They’ll kill ou guys to get me back...” She kept her head down. “I’m not worth anyone’s life though.”
“...Boss....” Mitsuko shifted in her sleep struggling against something pinning her down in her dream. “Stop it... Please, I don’t like that....”
Maes glanced over at the child. /What else did they do to the kid that Yashiro doesn’t know about? / He thought hoping that she was okay.
Ritsuko yelped moving outside the van getting sick once she stepped ouside.
Maes threw a knife taking out one of the men who moved to retrieve her. Gunfire raked the van making the men duck. When they glanced up a man was holding Ritsuko in one arm. The small woman shook her head trying o get free.
“Should have just handed her over in the first place.” The man licked her ear making her squirm more. “I’m impressed she lasted this long though. Usually she obeys orders faster. Don’t tell me the little bit of freedom you’ve had has made you think you’re really free bitch.” He asked pulling her head up.
“How would you like your tongue cut out?” Hughes asked taking a step closer. The man pressed a knife to her neck watching him.
“Let me guess you’ve been screwing these guys and found them better whore?” He asked whispering in her ear.
Falmon saw he couldn’t get a clear shot. “Havoc, can you get him?”
“Right, I’m still seeing double. Wish I could. That bastard’s annoying.” Havoc scowled a little wishing he could do more to help.
The knife left Hughes’ hand imbedding it’s self into the forehead of the man holding Ritsuko. The two of them fell to the ground. The girl curling up into a tight ball shivering. She was trapped under the body.
Al stepped out of the brush having had run towards the sound of the gunfire hoping that his brother wasn’t in trouble. “Hughes? How’d you get here first?” He asked looking confused.
“We had directions.” He knelt checking to see if Ritsuko was okay. The small cut had barely drawn blood. She stayed curled up shivering.
Alphonse Elric didn’t know how he had gotten lost. He had found his way back to the church as the Father placed a body into a freshly dug grave. He stayed silent recognizing the body as one of the two boys that had been living with him.
