Chapter eight

Roy entered the dinning room with Ritsuko hanging off his arm lightly. He saw her sister and Maes talking. /The girl seems happy at least. / He thought seeing that the lieutenant Colonel had noticed him there and started to stand. He shook his head. ‘The kid’s better off with you at the moment,’ he lipped to his friend.

‘Might want to get her somewhere she can sit down,’ Maes responded seeing she was about to pass out. He caught her as she stumbled.

“Are you okay?” He looked at her as she glanced up at him, a small blush on her cheeks. The brown haired woman nodded slightly.

“I’m fine.” She moved closer to him as everyone looked at her.

/Damn it, I should have just asked her what she wanted and gotten it for her. The last time she’s been around this many people she was probably.../ He let the thought die in his mind. “Here, let’s go see if some of the others want to go with us. If not, I want you to stay here okay?”

/I can’t be the only thing here to watch. / Ritsuko thought, nodding to Roy as she was escorted tot he table where the other four Military officers sat.

Havoc grudgingly handed over a card scowling slightly as he noticed them walk up. He stood to let her take his seat.

“Gold fish?” Roy asked raising an eyebrow. He noticed the shot glasses and three empty bottles on the table. “Which of you aren’t drunk yet?”

Brenda’s head hit the table as he passed out.

“Sorry sir, we were taking shots with losing hands.” Falmon said calmly.

“That means Fury’s winning?” He sighed trying to figure out what to do.

“I can stay sir. I don’t mind it.”

/Shit, we’re still near that damned village and they decided to drink. Please tell me Falmon and Havoc aren’t totally gone. / He watched Ritsuko move to help Brenda up.

“Brenda, sir, you shouldn’t sleep here.” She got him standing.

“Havoc, go with her.” Roy ordered wanting to make sure that the girl would be okay if anything happened.

“But...”

Mustang leaned closer to him. “You’re better with women than the others, with the exception of Hughes, who I don’t think we can pull away from the little girl.”

Havoc sighed nodding. “Yes sir.”

Ritsuko noted the conversation but didn’t comment. Instead she hid her face behind the barrel-chested practical joker hoping that the lighter haired man wouldn’t notice the blush on her cheeks. /He wouldn’t want to be with you anyway. No one decent would want to if they knew your past Rits. / She thought to herself. /Not that you had any say in what happened... but. / She shook her head slightly to clear the thoughts.

Al watched as his brother started to doze off. He carefully took the book away and picked up the older teen’s jacket and over shirt before picking up the smaller boy. /The Colonel is going to be worried. / He thought as he walked out the door. It didn’t take long to get back to the inn.

“I thought I said to be back earlier.” Mustang tried to look upset as he say the armored form walking up with its blonde package. /At least they made it back. I was starting to worry something had in fact happened. / He thought hiding his relief.

“Brother was being stubborn. You know how he gets when something upsets him.” Al said calmly.

Ed stirred in his sleep but didn’t wake.

“We can’t afford him being stubborn. It’s not just the girl that they want.” Roy said sounding calm. /I don’t know why they dragged Edward into this, but he’s now on a target list of three. I just hope they haven’t hurt him already.../ He thought. “You and your brother are rooming with Hughes and Havoc.”

Al nodded knowing that Ed got along better with both men than anyone else. /Maybe it will help him deal with whatever happened. Hawkeye still hasn’t said anything, nor had Hughes. And you can never get him to be quiet. / Al thought carrying his bundle to the room.

Ritsuko pulled the blanket over the drunken man’s shoulder and stepped back almost tripping over his boots. /Way to go... still clumsy. / She thought trying to catch herself.

Havoc caught her carefully before she fell completely. He breathed in her scent grateful the light was off in the room. /She smells like fresh rain. / He thought blushing at her proximity. It took all he could to will himself from doing more than smelling her. “Sorry.” He whispered feeling her tremble in his arms. “I didn’t hurt you did I?”

“Not your fault.” She reddened more looking down. /He smells a little like fire. With a hint of alcohol, but it’s not overpowering on him like Master.../ She thought pulling away and starting for the door. “And, I’m glad you’re okay now.”

/She’s going to get upset again. The bastards that hurt her are going to pay. She’s too innocent to have been in that position. / He thought as he crossed the room to her side. He heard her stomach growl and saw her touch her stomach gently. “Why don’t we go back downstairs? I’ll make sure nothing happens to you okay?”

“I. I don’t think I can.” She stammered.

/At least I’m not really drunk or I’d be making passes at her. / He thought as he gave a small smile. “Why don’t we go down to get something to eat. You look like you could use it.”

She blushed as her stomach growled. She opened her mouth to say something. She blinked in surprise when she felt lips against hers. Her face reddened more as she pulled back a little.

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t let you apologize again for something you didn’t do. Besides, I figured no one’s really kissed you before. Sorry if I acted too early.” He brushed the hair out of her face as he spoke.

“I...” She shook her head touching her lips softly with her fingers. She glanced at the ground. He lifted her head gently as if to tell her to stop looking at the floor.

Hughes watched as Mitsuko started to fade off to sleep at the table. He carefully removed the hot chocolate mug from her hands, setting it down. /The poor kid’s exhausted. Once this is over I’m going to see if Miss Yashiro and Mitsuko will want to come to Central. Mitsuko would have fun playing with Elysia. / He thought carefully picking up the nine-year-old. She moaned ever so slightly as she was picked up, but didn’t wake. /Maybe we can get her into a school there. She’s a smart girl, I doubt she’s ever had formal learning though. /

He carried her back to the room she was sharing with Ritsuko and Hawkeye. He carefully put her on the bed.

Hawkeye looked up from her file, taking off her glasses as Maes entered the room. She quirked an eyebrow at him.

“Too much warm milk.” He said as he tucked the child in. “I didn’t want to stop her though; she looks so cute sleeping like that.” He smiled at the child.

“You’re daughter’s going to be jealous.”

“She’ll understand.” /And with what she told me. I’m going to make sure no one hurts either of them. If Roy needs help killing them, I won’t hesitate. To think they were using this little girl to steal. I’ll make sure she doesn’t have to do that anymore. / He thought looking at Hawkeye. “Roy’s fine too. Still a little agitated. I don’t think that’s going to change until this is over.”

Mitsuko moaned slightly in her sleep. “...But I watched sissy heal the little songbird...” Her face brightened as she mumbled. “She shimmered all pretty, like an angel.”

Maes glanced at the girl as she slept. She flinched slightly as if hit. He moved to wake her if needed. She started to relax a little and he turned back to Hawkeye.

“You think they abused her like they did the older one?” She asked a little worried.

“I hope not, but they might have...” He whispered pulling the blanket more over the child when it had slipped. /God please don’t have had this little angel hurt like that.../ He added in thought. /When this is over, I’ll make sure she has a good home. She and her sister don’t deserve what happened to them. /

One of these days I’m going to lock him in a room with no books. Just to let him know there’s more in the world than Alchemy.” Roy mumbled watching the blonde boy sleep. /The only time he’s actually peaceful. Makes me almost feel guilty watching him. / Roy thought keeping his mask up.

Al looked at him. “You know that he’d try to kill you for that right?” /Though it would almost be amusing to watch. / He added in thought.

/He can try, it might actually keep him out of trouble for a while at least. / Roy thought as Ed punched at the air.

“...Take that bastard Colonel...” Ed laughed a little. Al shook his head.

/He must really hate me. I guess I know why. / Roy thought as he saw that Ed was still asleep. “Would you like to be my accompless on that?” He asked Al.

Al fretted a little. “If he found out, I’d be lucky to find all my parts.”

Roy smirked at the idea of Al searching all over for his head. A knock at the door stopped him from commenting. He stood to answer it, figuring Al would want to stay with his brother.

Ritsuko bit her lip as she and Havoc entered the dinning room again.

“You okay?” He asked looking at her. She was looking at a table near the others. The men there wore uniforms just like Roy’s group. She recognized their faces and shifted a little, moving behind the taller man. “Did they hurt you before?” He asked keeping his voice low.

She gave a faint nod. “Havoc, please, don’t start anything with them. I don’t want you to fight right now... I’ll go back up to my room. It’s really okay, if it will prevent anyone from getting hurt...”

Jean shook his head. “We came here because you needed to rest. Besides, I know you haven’t eaten in a while. I doubt that it would do us any good if you starve yourself.”

She looked up into his eyes and saw the concern he had. She nodded letting him lead her to another table.

Falmon sobered up a bit more glancing at Fury.

“Ten bucks says he’ll screw it up somehow.”

“You’re on.” Falmon said with a grin.
