Chapter Nine

Roy opened the door seeing four officers. He stepped back as two of them aimed guns at him. /This is starting to get a little old. Don’t they ever think of something new? / He thought keeping his straight face.

“Sorry Colonel sir, but we have orders to arrest you and your group for aiding a fugitive.” One of the men stammered. The man was a lower ranking officer, and clearly just out of the academy.

/They’re still after her? Means Jan has someone here. / Roy thought as he stayed where he was, not wanting to draw their fire and risk waking Edward yet.

Al stayed out of sight with his brother. He glanced at his brother, who was still sleeping peacefully, curled up hugging a pillow tightly to him as he slept.

“We’ve seen the cold-blooded murderer with one of your crew. She’ll be taken into custody within the next few minutes.

“We were bringing her to the prison in Central.” Roy lied, but figured it would get them to lay off the girl. “Fuhrer is aware of our plans. Don’t believe me call him. He was the one who gave us the orders.”

Al listened, trying to figure out what he was doing. He wondered if the two girls were already in trouble. /The others won’t let them out of here. Not with the condition that they’re in./ He thought knowing Roy wasn’t planning on taking her to prison.

“It would be better if you come with us sir, to resolve this matter more quickly.” The higher-ranking officer said as he looked at Roy. “I’m sorry, but I do have to insist this.”

“I would rather wait here. It’s been a long day and I know how the cells in prison lack in comfort.” Roy smirked as he looked at the men. “I would rather the young woman stay here as well. It would allow her to rest a bit. With the poor state of health she’s in. It would be for the best.” He didn’t let his eyes move from the four men. “Besides, where would she run with the military all over the place? Even if she tries to ‘run away’ she won’t get far from us.”

“We really can’t have her running around free. Children here are in danger each moment she is not in custody.” The highest-ranking officer growled at him.

“That’s a load of crap and you know it.” Roy leaned against the wall keeping the bed Edward was on between him and the men if needed. “What is she going to do? My men are with her, and I doubt they’ll let her escape.” /Why would she run away from the only people who are helping her anyway? / He added in thought watching them.

“Giles, go fetch her.” The higher rank ordered. The man he had barked the order to, gulped slightly.

“Y...yes sir...” A lower ranking officer ran off to try to find the woman.

Havoc had gone back to Ritsuko, sitting with her as the food she had ordered arrived. She sipped at her drink, trying to settle her stomach enough so that she could even think about eating something.

“Hey, you don’t have to rush it. You doing okay?” Havoc asked touching her shaking hand lightly.

Ritsuko gave a small nod as she bit her lip, catching sight of a man walking up to the table where the other officers were laughing. Ritsuko paled a little more. /Please, don’t let them touch me again. / She begged glancing up at Havoc.

Two officers started for their table. Falmon stood watching them, waiting to move if anything happened. He saw Havoc motion for him to back off a little, so as to not startle the woman and nodded.

“Is something wrong?” Havoc asked moving their clasped hands under the table feeling her nails dig into his. He held it gently, not planning on letting her get hurt.

“We were asked to bring you’re lady friend here to head quarters. Seems she’s a wanted person.” The two men said calmly.

Ritsuko yelped as one of the two men pulled her from her seat, making her let go of Havoc’s hand. She tried to claw at the hand holding her.

“She’s not a wanted criminal. All the charges were false accusations.” Havoc said standing. He glared down at the shorter man. “So, I suggest you release her before you hurt her.” Havoc stayed calm. /I’d rather not have her hurt, or see us have to hurt someone. / He thought seeing the frantic look in her eyes as the man pushed her towards the table his friends were waiting at.

Arms wrapped around her and she tensed. “It’s me.”

Falmon whispered letting her relax.

She gave him a faint nod to tell him she was okay.

“When I let you go, get back to Jean’s side okay?”

Ritsuko yelped as Falmon punched two of the men before releasing her. She scrambled back to Havoc’s side, hiding a bit behind him.

Havoc made sure to keep himself between her and the men glancing at Falmon to give him thanks.

“We have orders to bring her back.”

“And I have orders of my own.” Havoc replied. “Which is to protect this woman at all costs.” He growled a little as the man moved to grab at her again. “And if they’re sending jerks like you after her, there’s no way I’m going against orders.”

Ritsuko paused a moment. /Is he following orders because Roy gave them... or is it he actually cares about me? / She wondered pulling back a little more to give him room if he needed it.

“Stairs,” Havoc whispered to her keeping between her and the soldiers.

“You don’t have jurisdiction here.”

“You’re not getting her. I want to know who your commanding officer is.” Roy asked hoping that Ritsuko and Havoc were still downstairs.

The men said nothing.

“I just gave you an order.”

“Nemda.”

It took all Roy had not to show any emotion. “He’s been let out of prison?” He asked raising an eyebrow slightly.

“He’s been out for a while. Seems there wasn’t enough evidence to hold him sir.”

“You mean he bought his way out.” Roy countered. “Those attack chimeras of his were highly illegal. There was plenty of proof of his crimes; he was working side by side with that woman.” Roy added keeping the bed Edward was on between him and the men without the sleeping boy being seen. “Give me someone more credible than him as the one giving you the orders and I may consider handing her over. Also, when you give me this proof, I want to hear it from his own mouth, not yours. Is that clear?”

/He’s not going to hand her over at least. / Al thought relaxing a little.

“The only men in charge are currently dealing business. Sir, we can escort you to their office.”

Roy glanced at Al and Ed giving a faint Smirk. “I can wait. By the way, you may want to keep it down. Fullmetal is sleeping, and unless you want to find out how ‘short’ his temper is, I suggest you don’t raise your voices.” Roy left the threat there.

/Now you’ve done it. / Al thought.

Ed’s eyes snapped open as he sat up growling. “Who are you calling short?”

“Now you did it... It was so quiet in here.” Al sighed dramatically in order to keep from laughing.

The three oficers looked at Ed and laugged. “That runt can’t be Fullmetal. He doesn’t look like he’s that much trouble.”

Al waved his hands trying to get the men to stop from making more comments.

“To think Colonel Mustang hides behind a brat kid who doesn’t even look tall enough to sit at a table with the adults withough a booster seat...”

Ed growled more, jumping out of bed. “Whow are you calling a super shrimp that has to use an elevator just to open the front door?!” He screatched swinging at the nearest person.

Roy was glad that it wasn’t him. /He’s so energetic in the morning. / Roy mused slightly smiling a little at the memory he had of Edward curled up on the bed. /Too bad that couldn’t have lasted longer. / He shook hte thought from his head. /Who am I kidding, he’s one of my subordinants. /

Al moved back, not bothering to stop his older brother. He knew better than anyone that it was usually a useless cause trying to stop him when he was riled up because of comments on his height. /Colonel Mustang knows how he is. / He glanced over at Roy, just missing his smirk.

Jan knelt on the balcony, her short blond hair catching in a warm breeze. Blue eyes glanced into violet as she saw Envy drop into the shadows beside her. “Should we lure Flame and Fullmetal out with Flame’s pretty blond?” She asked carefully drawing one of the several knives from where it was lashed to her shapely thigh.

Envy heard Ed wake and grinned at the distraction. “Do whatever you want. I’m going for Fullmetal.” With that said he moved to the other door, thanking the carpenter of the inn for having the balconies linking the rooms.

Hawkeye heard Edward wake and started for the door to see what was going on in the next room. Hughes was a step ahead of her figuring the child would stay asleep a while longer.

Jan watched the two adults start to leave and smiled seeing the small girl lying on the bed. /She’s better bait. The slut will do anything to make sure no harm comes to that brat. / She kicked in the window, quickly going through it and landing on the bed holding the girl.

Mitsuko woke as she heard glass shatter. Opening her eyes she saw Jan and started to scream, the sound cut off by a hand over her mouth and a knife at her throat.

Hughes turned seeing the girl struggling against the blond woman. Before he or Hawkeye could react Mitsuko was pulled up from the bed, being used as a sheild against them. /Damnit, / Maes thought seeing the frightened tears in the child’s eyes. She leaned her head away from the blade as much as possible not daring to speak even though her mouth wasn’t covered.

“Move closer Military and I will kill our little pet here.” Jan purred enjoying seeing the worried looks on the two adults’ faces.

“She’s not a pet.” Hughes growled. “She’s just a little girl.” He added coldly not sure how to get the child away. /I should have stayed at her side. / He thought knowing as soon as they could get her away, he wasn’t going to let her go.

Ritsuko felt dizzy, touching the wall to steady herself. Closing her eyes she saw a knife and blonde hair. “Mitsuko,” The small woman turned scrambling up the stairs leaving Havoc and the others behind. /Please, just let her be having a nightmare.../

A man fell out the door just past where she was heading for her sister. /A fight... not good. /

“Mitsuko!” She hissed, her foot catching on the steps. The hand that caught her was another soldier. He pulled her to her feet.

“What a mess, Davies can never finish an operation without a scene.” The man said locking cuffs on her wrists.

“No. Let go.” She tried to pull her way free from him.

/Shit, / Havoc thought as he barreled up the steps, crashing into the man in a low tackle. He saw Ritsuko roll away from them, trying to free her wrists from the cuffs. “You know I’m starting to get a little tired of this. Why can’t you guys just leave them alone?” He knocked the soldier out and found the keys, kneeling by her.

Ritsuko kicked at him not really seeing him.

“Hey, it’s me.” Havoc dodged her foot and helped her sit up. “Here, let me get those off okay?”

Ritsuko looked at him once the cuffs were off. “I’m sorry, I panicked.”

“We’re not out of this yet okay. It’ll be fine though. You’ll see.” He smiled at her. “Why don’ we get your sister out of here.”

“Obviously you want something. Wha is it?” Hughes asked trying to keep from making any movements that would put the child’s life in danger.

Mitsuko fidgeted slightly, her green eyes meeting with Hughes’ own blue ones, begging for help as the knife dug deeper into her flesh, telling her silently to stop moving. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she tried to stay calm.

Hughes watched the tears and the few drops of blood making their way down from the cut on her neck. /She’s okay... I’m not going to let that bitch kill the little princess.../ He thought fighting hte urge to try to tackle the woman and pull the girl away. /Hang on sweetie.../

“You’re right. I do want something. I’ll give the little pet back if you give me Flame, Fullmetal and the slut.” Jan growled smiling a little seeing the fear in the man’s eyes. She hefted the child up a little more, moving the knife so the point dug in a little, just under the child’s ear.

“Hughes...” She whimpered unable to hold back the small sound.

Ed swung at the man who had made the booster seat comment. “How’s this for microscopic?” When he saw that the others were down he turned looking at Roy, then over to his brother. “Al, what the hell am I doing here?”

Al fidgeted a little. “Well, when you fell asleep brother, I... I thought you would rather sleep in a bed then arched over a book...”

/I went there in case I had nightmares... He wouldn’t know what they did to me back there.../ He thought not looking at Roy. “I’d rather have book fa...” He glanced up as Ritsuko’s panicked yells filled the hall. He, Al, and Roy all went to the hall.

“Let go... She’ll kill her.” Ritsuko was fighting against Riza, who was trying to keep her from entering the bedroom.

“She’s using Mitsuko to get you. “Let us get her out of there.”

“By the time you do that Jan will have killed her.” The smaller woman growled unable to break free.

Havoc sighed unable to get a clear shot. “I’m sorry.”

/She... The blond freak.../ Edward paled a little as he heard the woman talk. He shook his head hoping that Roy hadn’t seen it. /I owe her and her pedophile husband for humiliating me like that still. / He marched into the room balling his hands into fists.

Riza was shoved back in his passing, and released Ritsuko, who slipped into the room behind him.

“Even though you’re one I want Fullmetal, stay back. I’ll kill her if you get too close.” To prove her point Jan pressed the knife more to the child’s throat making her give a small pained cry.

/Bet the sick bitch is getting off on making her cry like that. / Edward thought stopping his movement. He could see the woman had cut herself when she had entered the room. /She’s sloppy. If we wait it out, she might bleed out... But she could kill Mitsuko before she gets that weak. /

“Big Brother...” Mitsuko whimpered still not daring to move. The knife pressed a little more into her flesh making her wish she hadn’t talked.

“Mistress!” Ritsuko caught her attention. “I... I’ll go back with you... Just. Just let Mitsuko go.” The small woman begged dropping to her knees as she spoke. “I’ll do what ever you wish.”

Havoc had just missed catching her and wondered what she was doing. When Ritsuko dropped to her knees he fought the urge to go get her.

‘We won’t let them go far with her.’ Roy lipped to him seeing the worried look on his face.

“Ritsuko stay back.” Ed snapped at her. /She looks like she’s sick. / He thought seeing the sweat beading up on her brow. /Is she really that sick, or is it a mind thing? / He thought as she seemed to fade a little more, putting her hands on the floor as if to steady herself. “Rits..”

Jan smiled slightly seeing the look of her pet. “You, over here.” She ordered making hte blade bite deeper into the child’s neck.

Ritsuko obeyed stumbling to her feet. Ed caught her arm in passing, hoping to convince her not to go. The woman shook her head a little

Havoc started for her. /Ritsuko, don’t do this.../ He thought getting stopped by Roy. Riza was holding Hughes back.

“You go in there you might get both of them killed.” Roy whispered hoping that Ritsuko knew what she was doing.

“Do your little trick bitch.”

Ritsuko slowly unwrapped the bandages on her wrists, careful not to expose them to Edward. She tapped the underside of her wrists together and started glowing, blue close to her skin, reddening to purple then a brilliant magenta about an inch from her skin.

The child looked at the others begging them with her eyes to do something to stop her sister.

Ritsuko’s hands reached out to touch Mitsuko only to hear a low growl. She lowered her head more. “I’m sorry sister.” She whispered touching Jan.

Everyone watched, as the glow seemed to fade from Ritsuko into Jan then disappear. Ritsuko fell to the bed, her eyes closing.

/Sis! Sis get up! / Mitsu whimpered trying to break free.

When he had recovered from the shock, Ed growled. “Let her go befor you piss me off more.” Ed snapped preparing to clap his hands together.

“I don’t need her anymore anyway.” Jan grinned throwing Mitsuko at him. She grabbed Ritsuko and jumped out the window again.

“Fuck.” Edward yelped catching her. He felt the child cling to him and heard her crying. He looked around for Hughes to deal with her knowing that they didn’t have time to wait.

“Fullmetal, stay with her. I’ll go after Davies.” Roy said steeling his voice. /I won’t let that witch come any closer to you. I don’t want her doing to you like they did to me. / He thought feeling a hand on his shoulder. His eyes met with Hughes
.

“No, Maes, stay with them. You should out rank anyone else they try to send.”

Havoc and Hawkeye had already run for the courtyard to try to catch Jan.

/She’ll be okay. She’s got to be I promised her that I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her. / Havoc thought as he followed Hawkeye.

There was a crash in the next room making Ed look up. Hughes had crossed the room taking Mitsuko from him. The father held her close to him. “I’ll take care of her, you check on Al.”

“Thanks.” Ed scrambled from the room. Upon entering the room he yelped seeing Al and Envy fighting. Al was holding his hands doing his best to keep the green haired humonculi away from the seal. “Al!”

“I’m okay.” The armor bound boy yelped in pain as nails brushed the seal.

Ed was flying into action, grabbing Envy pulling him away from his brother. The two rolled on the floor a moment, Envy pinning the smaller boy down.

“What’s wrong shrimp? Can’t you fight?” He laughed.

Ed scowled kicking at him with his metal leg. The shapeshifter yelped in pain feeling the leg he had hit shatter.
