Chapter 5. Cleaning Up

By Gator Ri

Kiyan looked at the clock, it was late, as she entered the small hotel room that she had rented for a couple of nights. There was no use to return home, for she would just be coming back this way tomorrow to escort a prisoner to Gouwa anyway. Although why they didn't send this prisoner on the escort that went out this morning was beyond her.

Taking off her uniform the blond-headed woman donned an oversized T-shirt and crawled into bed. Then she flipped on the TV to catch the eleven o'clock news. She was just drifting off when she caught sound of the news announcer say something about an accident on David Highway.

Opening her eyes she gasped as she saw the scene before her on the screen. "Oh My Gosh!" she exclaimed as she recognized the bus as that of the escort that was sent out from the city's prison this morning, also knowing that it would've been the one that Houjun would be on.

She watched the screen for a few more moments and sure enough they showed the bloody face of the only prisoner that hadn't tried to escape.

"Why did you not try to escape?" the field man asked, shoving the microphone into the injured man's face.

Houjun glared at the man, his eye full of physical pain, "I am guilty are I not?" he grunted through the pain.

"Yes but-" the field man was cut off as Jean came over and told him to leave the poor man alone.

Kiyan's eyes filled with tears at the look of pain in Houjun's eye, "The poor boy…" she said softly as she watched him being carefully laid on a stretcher to be taken to the hospital.

Then the camera quickly cut to two teens.

Amber eyes looked coolly upon the field man, "What n' th' hell do ya want?" he asked rudely.

"Hey, you don't have to be rude!" The field man shot back, "I'm Bob and I just wanted to interview you two about the accident."

The dark blue headed boy looked skeptical but kept his mouth shut but the flame headed youth wasn't going to be so quiet. He started calling curses at Bob while his friend restrained him, "How dare ya! Yer jus' tryin' ta make money of some one else's misfortune. Ya littl' rat!"

Bob shrank back a bit from the onslaught.

"An' wha's with th' shovin' th' microphone in th' face of an injured man thing, huh?"

"He's just a prisoner."

Genrou didn't know why but this enraged him when the term was used so carelessly on the older boy, even though he had been rude to Genrou, "He's not jus' a prisoner, ya asshole! He's human too!"

Finally getting his hand over Genrou's mouth Kouji drug the red head off camera leaving behind a bewildered looking Bob.

Kiyan was surprised to feel a smile slowly spread on her face, replacing the tears, as she watched this scene. Then it suddenly occurred to her to find out where they would be taking Houjun, for she knew that he more than likely had no friends. She frowned thoughtfully determined to find out from Isei when she went to pick up her charge in the morning.

---------------------------------------------------------

Th e ride to the hospital was a painful one for the prisoner. Every bump and little jar sent waves of hurt through his body.

Jean came back and looked down at his charge's pain filled face, "Would you like something to help with the pain?" his voice was gentle.

Houjun nodded his head, "That would be nice," he grunted out.

Jean smiled softly as he pulled a syringe out of his med kit, along with alcohol and a cotton ball. Setting them down on the stretcher, where they would be safe, the paramedic carefully rolled up the injured man's sleeve. Taking the alcohol and cotton ball, Jean wetted it and then rubbed a spot on Houjun's upper arm. "This may sting a bit," he said as he prepared the syringe, filled with morphine.

Houjun just nodded his head slightly and twitched as he felt the needle go into his arm. He looked over at the paramedic and offered a slight smile, "Thank you."

Jean grinned back, "Not a problem, no one deserves to be left in that sort of pain," he gave the boy a meaningful look, "and I mean no one." Turning he went back to the front to talk with his partner.

Houjun brushed the comment from Jean aside, it was something that he would prefer to not think about.

Upon arriving at the hospital Leon helped Jean unload the stretcher with the injured man, being careful to not jar him more than necessary.

Houjun lay there unmoving and grateful that the pain had died down considerably now that the morphine had started to work. He looked up at the sky and then ceiling of the ER as the two paramedics wheeled him into the hospital.

Jean and Leon took Houjun up to the main nurse's desk where they quickly handed over the file that they had started on him.

"Take him to room seven," the head nurse said, after taking a glance at the file, "Someone will be with him in a few moments."

Nodding the paramedics wheeled their charge behind the desk and through a door. Houjun closed his eye against the lights, they were bright and hurt his eye and gods knew that he was in enough pain already, even though it was now quite dull.

He felt the stretcher stop and Jean gently touch his arm, "Houjun?" the paramedic questioned. He nodded his head, "We're going to need some help from you. We're going to need the stretcher back. So if you could helps us move you to the bed.." He opened his eye and nodded.

Unstrapping him Leon nodded, "Okay on three. One…two…three…" they swiftly and gently moved Houjun on to the hospital bed.

The prisoner grunted slightly in pain dull pain as he was laid on the hospital bed.

Jean sighed as he knew his job was now done, he looked at Houjun lying on the bed, his face almost neutral but he could see the pain that the boy was trying to hide, not just physical pain either. "Well, my job is done here. I will be back tomorrow to see how you are fairing, Houjun," the man promised.

Houjun looked at the paramedic, a bit of surprise on his face, "Oh…" was all he could say as he watched the two leave. He turned his head slightly looking at the room full of medical devices, he wondered how long he would have to wait until someone came for him.

He was starting to drift off, worn out from all that had transpired earlier that day, when the soft rustling of someone entering the room aroused him. He blinked his good eye at the woman nurse, wondering how long he had been there, as he couldn't remember much of it now.

She smiles softly at the injured man, seeing that he is worn out and not in so much pain as she thought he would be. "Hello," she greeted softly, "I am, Kinna. I will clean you up and make you look as good as new."

He just snorted softly at her, he would never look as good as new, not with his ugly disfigurement.

Kinna sighed softly at the response from the injured man, totally missing the reason as to why he did such, she would not force him to like her. She couldn't blame him for disliking her, for she would more than likely cause him more pain.

After putting on a pair of latex gloves on the nurse turned to her patient, "Well, first thing first is to get all of that glass out of you, but we're going to have to get that uniform off."

Houjun seemed to blush at this but he just nodded his head, hoping that he would get to keep the boxers at least.

The nurse chuckled slightly upon seeing his blush, "Don't worry I won't take off more than I need." Taking off his shoes, she picked up a pair of scissors she set to work on cutting the clothing off, it would be less painful and the easiest.

The injured man held his breath and closed his eye as the uniform was cut from him, shivering slightly as the air from the hospital felt a might cool against his skin.

She gazed upon the man's injured lean form feeling sorry for him, a few ribs were obviously out of place and there was blood streaked across his young skin from the cuts caused by the glass. Then there was the blood caked on his face, she sighed this would take a while.

He laid there, on top of his cut up clothing, wincing as each piece of glass was extracted from his skin, the shards in his back were the worst for they were in the farthest. It hurt his ribs to lay on his side. He took another sharp breath as he felt yet another piece slide out, cutting, bleeding. His whole body screamed in pain and cried its tears of blood out of the wounds, only stopping after they seemed to have their fill.

Kinna felt badly for the poor boy as she took each piece of debris from his skin, for it reopened the wound. She sighed in relief as the last piece was extracted and dropped onto the tray. She then disinfected the tiny cuts, her patient slightly twitching as they stung like a thousand needles. Done, she touched his bare shoulder gently, "You may lay on your back if you wish.

He nodded his head and slowly rolled over with her help. Sighing in pain, as it was starting to return more forcefully, as he lay back against the softer cloth of the sheets, the uniform had disappeared. He blinked wonderingly and then saw the nurse folding it and setting it aside, realizing what must have happened.

She bent over him, looking at his bloodied face, "Sure made a mess, that it did," she commented as she gently started to clean away the dried blood.

He flinched as she started to work on his face, "It's been a mess…" his voice still held pain, although this time just not physical.

She looked at him curiously but did not prod him, she didn't wish to cause him anymore pain. As she worked she noticed that there was no left eye left on the man's face, it was covered with a very bad large gash. She wondered what could've happened for him to receive such but again she didn't ask, she didn't know if she wanted to know.

His face finally clean she spread a disinfectant cream on the left side and quickly bandaged it. "You leave that on now, you hear?"

He slowly nodded his head as she looked down at his disjointed ribcage. "This will hurt," she said as she put the ribs back in place with a sickening crack.

He cried out in pain at this, a few tears running down his face, but he could breath a bit easier. He knew that that was necessary but it still didn't make the pain go away.

Moving to his right arm she gently touched it, noting how much he flinched from the pain. 'fracture,' she thought with dismay. "I'm going to have to put that arm in a sling for now, until we can get you in for an x-ray."

He nodded not really caring at this point, he hurt too much and he was tired. The only thing that he registered as she moved him to put his right arm in a sling was the pain. That's all his life had been for a while now, and it seems to be the only thing that he can remember. Pain…Pain…It throbbed through his head like his heart pumped his blood…Forever…Pain…

Kinna looked down on the boy's face and sighed, he could definitely use another shot of morphine. He was obviously in a lot of pain. Finding what she would need the nurse filled a syringe with the painkiller and then rubbed the boy's arm, "I'm going to give you a shot of morphine to help with the pain. So be prepared for the needle."

He just nodded barely registering her words…Pain…Pain…it continued to throb through his being as the needle entered his arm and the morphine was shot into him.

Kinna sighed, 'Finally done,' she thought to herself as she looked at the clock, it was well after midnight. "I'll go see about getting you moved to a room," she said softly. Turning on rubber soles she walked out of the room leaving him alone.

Houjun just nodded again, not really hearing what she was saying. The morphine started to work quickly, which made him feel relieved as sleep over took him, sleep filled with pain.

It wasn't until he was wheeled into the room where he would be kept that Houjun awoke. He looked around him, groggily. "N-nani?" he rasped, feeling a bit confused.

Kinna's voice floated to him, "Do not worry, you are in your room."

He blinked his single eye, memories flooding back at him and with it the pain that had went way rushing back. He winced.

"We're going to be moving you to the bed," she spoke softly as the patient escorts helped her move the injured man to the bed.

He grunted slightly in pain as he was shifted onto the hospital bed from the stretcher, which he didn't have any recollection of being moved to. He looked down at himself, now clad in a hospital gown, the boxers gone, and a identification bracelet around his wrist.

The patient escorts quickly left with the stretcher, as they had other patients to tend to, while Kinna conversed with the floor's head nurse outside of Houjun's private room.

He listened intently catching some of the conversation. There would be a guard outside of his room at all times, seeing as how he was a prisoner, he would be going for x-rays in the morning, and he still needed an IV needle.

He frowned at all of this, to him being in the hospital was worse than being in a prison cell, for now he would be a prisoner in bed, with little to keep his thoughts occupied.

He looked over as Kinna came into the room with the head nurse, the starch of their uniforms crackling. He didn't move as Kinna rested a light hand on his forehead.

"He has already had two shots of morphine. I would not give him much more," Kinna was saying as she moved her hand and turned to take an alcohol swab off of the tray that the other nurse was holding. After swabbing it on his hand she dropped it lightly back on to the tray. Picking up a rather large hollow looking needle she then bent over his hand looking for a vein, "This would be your IV needle, Houjun, it's to make sure your body gets enough liquids."

Houjun tried to detach himself from the world as he felt the needle go painfully in. He watched out of his eye as the bag that had been hanging on a rack beside his bed was hooked to a tube and the tube to his hand, clear liquid slowly dripping and making its course into his veins.

She smiled softly at him, "Well, good luck to you, Houjun. I must get back to my own ward, now."

He watched her leave and looked at the nurse that was left.

She smiled kindly, "I am Sarah and will be your nurse on the night shifts. You should try and get some sleep for now though." As she left she turned the lights to a soft glow, "Push the call button on your bed if you need anything," she called back, the door clicking shut softly behind her.

Houjun sighed as he was left alone, readjusting the sheet and blanket that covered him. He looked around the small room; there was a TV up on the wall in front of him, a window on the wall to his left, and the little hall that went out to the main hall to his right, other than that there was a chair and some curtains adorning the window. It was a plain but cheery room.

He then stared at the ceiling, the pain back down to a dull throb, as he waited for sleep to claim him again, hoping that the nightmare wouldn't come to haunt him this night.

----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------

Kouji looked tiredly at his friend, "Ya wanna wha'? Go an' visit th' prisoner." He scratched his sleep tousled dark blue hair, "Why n' th' hell do ya wanna do that fer?"

Genrou shrugged his bared shoulders, head propped on one hand as he laid on his side on their bed, "I dunno, Kouji, demo I jus' think that it would be nice." He yawned widely, making his fangs peek out. "Even though we missed a lot of sleep over this whole thing."

"Che…I'd say," Kouju retorted. He scowled slightly at remebering having to answer a million questions and not too mention fill out a bunch of paper work to help out the officers. He sighed heavily trailing his fingers down the red head's bare muscular chest, "It sure was one helluva night."

He closed his eyes at the feel of his lover's fingers on his chest, "Hai, it was that…." He peeked open one amber eye a sly smile on his face, "Not like our usual helluva nights, ne?"

Kouji chuckled and shook his head, "Iie, sure wasn'." He gave his lover a kiss on his soft lips and then pulled away as he got up and stretched, "Well, then if ya wanna go see this guy then lets get goin'. It's already almost noon."

----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------

Kiyan pulled up in her patrol car at the prison. Getting out she waved a good morning to Isei who happened to be waiting with her next charge.

"Good morning, officer Kiyan," the man greeted.

"Good morning, warden Isei," she smiled, "So this is my charge for the day."

"Hai, she sure is."

Kiyan nodded her blond head, "What is your name?"

The prisoner, who had been wearing a rather blue look, seemed to brighten a bit, "I am Misa."

Kiyan smiled a bit brighter, "Nice to meet you, I am officer Kiyan and will be your escort."

Isei rolled his eyes, "Enough of this Office you need to get going. You have a long drive ahead of you."

Kiyan nodded as she followed Isei and the prisoner to the car. After Isei had closed the back door Kiyan asked him, "Do you know what hospital they took the injured prisoners to from that wreck last night?"

Isei looked at her oddly for a moment and then nodded, "Hai, that I do. Why do you want to know?"

"I just wanted to visit and old friend."

He snorted slightly, "You can find your murderer at Jivan," he turned and gave her a wave as he walked off, "See you later officer."

Kiyan smiled as she got in the car and pulled out of the prison to head towards Gouwa, it would be late by the time she arrived but she figured that Houjun wouldn't mind a visitor.

Chapter five was intended to be longer but I figure that that was a good

Place to end. I'm sorry about these going up so slow but I'll be

Writing good on a chapter and then I get hit with writer's block.

-_- Hopefully that won't happen with the next one. I would also

like to thank those that take the time to review the story.
