Chapter 6
Hakkai was preparing a small fire. The warmth relaxed him. For a moment his eyes fluttered shut. He was very tired, though he doubted he'd get any decent sleep. Right now he worried about Sanzo, about their whole situation.
What was this place? It seemed nobody else passed by here, though there was a road. The one they had been following for three days. Now he thought of it, they hadn't met anyone the last three days. Which was rather strange. There should have been many travellers on that road that led from one town to another. It wasn't like there were many other routes to take.
Highly unusual.
So was that tower. Why hadn't anyone bothered to clean up the debris, to build another watchtower, if that's what it was. It seemed the people did their awful best to avoid this place. Considering the recent events, he could understand why.
The fog was clearing now. The tower was visible again and he didn't see any more signs of youkai over there.
He hoped Goku and Gojyo wouldn't stay away for too long. They were out, searching for food and water. Gojyo, not trusting Goku very much with food business, insisted on searching some himself. At least that would leave him and Hakkai with something to eat.
Hakkai chuckled softly, while staring in the flames.
His attention was drawn back to the tower. There was something up there. A soft light, very appealing. It seemed to call him, to draw him near. He could see a small shadow. A child? Could it be the child he had heard earlier?
"Three blind mice,
See how they run!
They all ran after a farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife.
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?"
//That voice//
Hakkai looked up. He had to go there. It pulled at him, impossible to ignore. The others would find him, surely they would… He needed to be there.
He started walking. The little dragon followed him closely. Something was wrong with its master.
Hakkai couldn't stop walking, though he knew the others would be worried. He knew he shouldn't leave them behind, but something about that light…
Maybe he could solve it all by going there. Yes, the others wouldn't have to worry anymore. Once he'd get there, everything would be alright.

The marquis was finally done. It looked like his victim was done too. Strong fellow nonetheless. Usually they didn't last that long. This one did, however, give him quite some pleasure. He remembered that fragile, little body, that pretty face distorted in pain, how he marred them both...
Carefully he put all of his stuff back into the case. He'd need that for the next time. He sincerely hoped the little one would find another one as enjoyable as this one by then.
//Not much left of him.//
He looked at the limp figure in the corner of the room. The human was covered in blood and other substances. Maybe he was still breathing, maybe he wasn't. The marquis didn't really care. The little one would take care of him, maybe even enjoy the leftovers for a bit.
It was time to go for the marquis.

Gojyo finally found something. A blue kind of fruit. He wasn't sure if it was edible. Hakkai probably knew. He was the smart one after all. Or Goku, he'd recognize anything that one could eat.
He was pretty happy to have found something. Goku would have found some food too -if the monkey hadn't eaten it all already. Hakkai would have started a nice fire by now…
Everything almost seemed alright. Gojyo was heading back, thinking things over, as he stumbled over a root that was sticking out of the ground. He fell down, nearly squashing the food. Cursing softly, he started recollecting the fruits that had spilled on the ground.
Cold fingers touched his shoulder. Gojyo looked up, startled.
"Hakkai, what are you doing here? I thought you were making a fire."
The man smiled.
"Do you need help?"
"I dropped the food," Gojyo grinned sheepishly.
"That's no problem."
Gojyo got back on his feet. He stared at Hakkai. Something wasn't right.
"Why are you here?"
Suddenly he felt the other man's arms around him. Soft breathing in his neck.
"I wanted to be alone with you."
Gojyo gasped as feathery kisses were planted in his neck.
"We haven't been alone in a long time…"
Slim fingers crawling under his shirt, hovering teasingly over his skin.
"W…What?" Gojyo managed to say.
Kisses on his ear, little nips on very sensitive skin.
"I can have you all for myself now."
Hands lingering on the waistband of his pants, trying to get in.
Gojyo shoved the other man away, violently. Hakkai fell down.
"What has gotten into you, did that fog fry your brain or something?"
Hakkai grinned at him. Something strange, in his eyes, his movements.
"You are not Hakkai," Gojyo stated as calmly as he could. He took his weapon, ready to attack.
"If you're so sure, then why not kill me?"
Gojyo was sure. This man didn't smell like his best friend, didn't act like him. A very poor copy.
"What have you done to Hakkai?" Gojyo hissed.
"Nothing," the other said. There was mockery in his tone of voice, shameless eyes studying Gojyo's form.
Gojyo felt white hot rage burning behind his eyes, clouding his vision. He was shivering over his entire body. Gojyo couldn't think straight anymore. How dared he? Copying Hakkai, the only one Gojyo'd trust his life to. Hakkai, whom he knew better than anyone else, his smell, his movements, the look in his eyes. To pretend so poorly to be his best friend, and expecting Gojyo to believe it? To fall for it?
With one swift motion he decapitated the imposter. Blood spattered on his clothes. What should have been a corpse, desintegrated immediately in a pile of insects. Maggots, beatles, centerpillars crawling over one another. At least youkai didn't leave this kind of mess.
Gojyo turned around and ran back to their camp out.
No sign of Hakkai.
There was a shadow, walking towards the tower. He recognized the form immediately.
"Hakkai!"
He screamed until his voice was hoarse. The man didn't hear him.
//Not this too//
As Goku returned, he found Gojyo sitting by himself in the dark.
"Where's the food. Where's Hakkai? Wasn't he going to make us a fire?"
Gojyo gritted his teeth. He pointed towards the tower. Goku saw a small figure walking towards it.
"Why did he leave? Why is he going all by himself? Why didn't you stop him?"
Gojyo sighed.
"He was already gone. I stayed here for *you*, idiot. If there's something wrong with him too, at least the two of us are still sane, I hope."
Goku looked at him, not understanding at all what was happening.
"Something must have happened! Hakkai would never leave us like that."
Gojyo nodded, "Have you seen or heard anything while looking for food?"
Goku shook his head.
"No, have you?"
"Nevermind," Gojyo said, "let's go."
To be continued?
