Chapter 7
//That light, so beautiful, this is where I must be. Here I'll find the answers.//
Hakkai finally reached the tower. There was a small fire burning.
"Birds of a feather flock together,
And so will pigs and swine.
Rats and mice will have their choice,
And so will I have mine."
A child was there. It wore a brown robe and sat with its back towards Hakkai.
"How did you get here?" Hakkai asked the child, "this is not a place for children to hang around."
"As I was going up the stairs
I met a man who wasn't there
I met that man again today
I wish, I wish, he'd go away."
Hakkai frowned. Another one of those rhymes, just like he had heard during the fight. The others wouldn't believe him… but it seemed he hadn't just imagined them.
"Who are you?" he tried again.
"Don't mind me, I'm just his servant. It's the marquis you're looking for."
Hakkai took a step closer.
"Who is the marquis?"
"He's busy right now, but he'll be done soon. It never takes too long before he's done playing. I got him a real pretty toy this time, a human," it said in an innocent tone of voice.
Hakkai swallowed. What was this child talking about? A marquis, a human *toy*? Hakkai hoped it didn't mean Sanzo by that last one.
He put a hand on the child's shoulder.
"Please, tell me, what is going on here?"
It turned around. Hakkai's eyes widened for a moment.
This was not a child. Was this the one that had Sanzo? It had no eyes, no teeth, it barely looked human.
Hakkai slitted his eyes, cautiously taking a step back.
"Where is he!"
"Wait 'till he's done and everyone will be happy," It said cheerfully and hopped through the debris.

The gun… It was still there somewhere…
His vision was blurry. Probably due to some blood in his eyes and a major concussion.
He had to find the gun.
Sanzo tried to stretch his arm. It hurt like hell. Moving was pretty much impossible, though he wasn't bound anymore. The marquis had left a while ago. Sanzo wondered why he wasn't killed after… that. Maybe there was a reason for it, maybe the marquis really didn't care. Whatever the reason be, he couldn't just lie there until he died! Or worse, until the other one came back, the little one.
In a moment of lucidness he tried to search for his gun another time. Pain engulfed him once again. Too much to bear. Like little spiders in his head, clouding his thoughts, removing all common sense that was left.
Shit, there went his vision again. The blackness came crawling upon him and he knew he was going to lose consciousness.
Maybe that wouldn't be too bad. After all, what was the point anyway?
He could retrieve the gun after he woke up again. *If* he ever woke up again.

"Something has happened out there! Tell me!" Goku whined.
Gojyo turned towards Goku, making a halt for a moment. His eyes were dark from exhaustion, worry and utter irritation.
"I told you, it doesn't matter," he hissed viciously.
Goku backed away for a moment. He had never seen the half youkai this angry.
"Don't you trust me?"
"I don't know who I can trust anymore."
Goku frowned, but decided not to push it anymore. Whatever it was, Gojyo wasn't going to tell him, no matter what.
They continued walking in silence. Goku a few paces behind Gojyo.
"What'll we do when we reach the tower and Hakkai… he disappeared just like Sanzo did?"
Gojyo stopped walking. Damn, why hadn't he thought of that?
"Then I'll pull down those ruins piece by piece until we find them."
But Hakkai hadn't disappeared, to Gojyo's relief. As they finally reached the ruins again, Gojyo saw he was talking to someone. A small human, a kid? The look in Hakkai's eyes told him something was off. As if he was afraid from that child.
Suddenly he saw Hakkai being hurled away like a rag doll. He flew through the air and landed amidst the ruins. After that he didn't move anymore.
For a moment both Gojyo and Goku stood there, speechless.
"Seems like trouble."
"Let's go!"
Gojyo got into action. Weapon ready, Goku on his heels. A surprise attack would end this quickly. Gojyo took a swing and aimed for whatever it was that had attacked Hakkai. Child or not, Gojyo didn't care. If it was this powerful it was no good.
To his surprise it suddenly turned around. Gojyo felt some kind of ball of energy burst against his chest. He felt a rib crack under the force. The half youkai was thrown away until he landed against a wall. It knocked all the air out of him and he fell to the ground.
Gojyo moaned. He tried to get up again, but only managed to get on his hands and knees. His entire body hurt. He had difficulty breathing. Blood was dripping down his chin, the coppery taste of it in his mouth.
As he looked up he saw Goku lunging forward to attack. Gojyo turned his head as he heard the monkey's scream.
He didn't want to see this.
If only the four of them were here, alive and sane. It wouldn't be too hard.
"Eeny Meeny Miney Moe,
Catch a tiger by his toe.
When he eats you,
Then you'll know,
That you're stupid and you're slow"

There was his gun. How could he have missed it. Right beside him all the time. If they came back, he could shoot them now. Nobody messes with Genjo Sanzo. He'd shoot every part of the marquis' body he had violated him with. He'd make it a slow and painful death, if he could stay conscious. His body had betrayed him numerous times. Dulling his senses, making him pass out from time to time.
It was these times, when the pain got unbearable, that his mind started to betray him too. Clouding his thoughts, making him a victim to unsane ideas.
The gun felt cool in his hands. The cold metal was welcome against the burning hot skin of his cheek. He trailed a teasingly slow path from his forehead to his chin. Metal over soft skin. Skin that would give way easily to the force of a well aimed bullet. Oh, how easy it would be. It would make an end to his indignity.
Fuck the world, let 'm kill their own demon overlords and whatever it is, out to destroy the people's happiness. Let someone else go through this shit.
Sanzo started to grin. Widely. A grin so big it seemed to split his face in two. It grew to full out laughter. A hollow noise in the quiet dungeon. It echoed off the walls and soon it seemed he wasn't alone anymore. He could feel the presence of all the beings that were once tortured and abused here too. There were many of them and they all knew what he had gone through. They stared at him with ghostly eyes, studying him.
//One of us now, don't be sad, you did a good thing.//
Hundreds whispering voices telling him that same sentence over and over again.
Now he wasn't alone anymore.
To be continued?
