He stalked up the stairs and down the hall to Goku's room. Before he opened the door, he heard his name, and decided to listen.
“Does Sanzo ever talk to you about his past Goku?”
“No. He never says anything about what he did before he found me. Just that he lost his master to demons.”
Goku almost missed the slight flinch from Denai as he mentioned Sanzo's master.
“What's wrong Denai?”
“He doesn't remember me Goku. Sanzo doesn't remember me.”
His eyes widened,
“You knew Sanzo?”
“Yes. I knew him a long time ago. Before I was sent to you, I knew he would be the one to find you.”
“How? How'd ya know that Sanzo would be the one to find me?” Goku whispered.
“Because he's just like his master.”
Sanzo almost gasped hearing Denai's last statement. She'd known his master? How? Why didn't he remember her? He passed Goku's room, and entered his own. There was something that he should be remembering about Denai. He needed to think.
As the inn was winding down for the night, it began to storm.
“Goku?” Denai called to the boy changing into his pajamas.
“Yeah?”
“Would you…would you mind sleeping with me tonight? I…I don't like storms very much.”
Goku looked over at her, and noticed her discomfort. He nodded and smiled.
“OK!”
She smiled, and moved over on the bed. He climbed in next to her, and curled up against her. Surprised, Denai wrapped her arms around him and held him as she had held Hakkai so long ago.
The rain always brought those bad memories to the surface. It had been raining that night; the night that the man she loved had been murdered. Her body unconsciously moved away from Goku, not wanting him to sense her pain as she softly cried out for her lover in her sleep.
Sanzo hated the rain. So many bad memories were associated with the rain. The most painful being the death of his master. Usually when it rained, he forced himself to sleep, but tonight he felt that he needed to do something. He found himself at the door to Goku and Denai's room, and he heard a faint sound, like someone crying.
“Denai…” he whispered as he went into the room and closed the door.
He saw that she and Goku were in the same bed, but she had pulled away. He watched her sleep for a moment, until she moaned and began to cry softly. He walked over to her and ran his hand along her hair. He almost jerked away when her eyes fluttered open, but relaxed as they immediately closed again. He continued to stroke her hair in a display of uncharacteristic kindness, and she seemed to calm. He was careful not to make any noise as to wake her or Goku, but could not contain his gasp when he heard the name that she called out.
“Koumyou.”
She reached towards him, but now Sanzo knew that she was really reaching for his master. He held her as she went back to sleep, and tried to remember. Why couldn't he remember her? She obviously knew him…and his master. It wouldn't come to him, but he was close. He could feel it. After a little while, Sanzo went back to his own room and surprisingly had no trouble falling asleep. Then he began to dream…
~ “Master Sanzo hurry! There is a youkai coming! We must get away.”
Kouryuu watched as his master shook his head, and smiled.
“I know this one. She won't hurt anyone.”
The other monks looked at his master as if he was crazy, but did not question him. They left, and then it was just Kouryuu and Koumyou.
“Kouryuu, I need you to leave.”
“Why?”
“You're not ready for what you'll see. Besides I'm not completely sure that she won't hurt you.”
“So you lied to the other monks?” he said with a sardonic expression on his face.
“No. She won't hurt them, because they're not in the same room. She'll come to me directly. Now go Kouryuu.”
As he left the room and was closing the screen, he saw his master remove his sutra.
`What the hell is he doing?' he thought to himself, almost going back into the room.
Then he heard the crash of the youkai entering the room. He had left the door open slightly, and watched as the youkai came into the room. She made no move for the Sanzo priest's sutra, but walked directly towards Koumyou himself. Kouryuu gasped as she ripped off his master's robes, and the shirt beneath, exposing the priest's upper body. Kouryuu watched as she bit his master on the neck, and then ran her tongue along his chest. She seemed almost frantic as she shoved Koumyou's pants off of him, and pushed him to the floor. Her cloak hid her movements as she removed her own clothing and straddled the priest. Kouryuu frowned as he looked at his master. He was breathing heavily, as if afraid. But if he feared the youkai, why didn't he call for help? Suddnely, the youaki gasped and threw her head back as his master moaned. When the youkai began to move over Koumyou, and he reached out to grasp her hips as if to urge her to move faster, it hit Kouryuu what they were doing [1]. His master…and this youkai, were…they were having…sex. At twelve, Kouryuu knew about sex, but hadn't actually been exposed to the act until now. He watched, fascinated, as every muscled in his master's body seemed to tense, and he cried out as the youkai woman seemed to almost scream. When she collapsed onto Koumyou, he weakly lifted his arm and placed his hand on her wrist. His hand seemed to glow as divine energy flowed through and formed a bracelet on the youkai's wrist. Kouryuu saw Kounyou frown as the woman shuddered, but nothing else seemed to happen. He moved his hand to her ear, and once again there was a divine glow. Kouryuu heard his master sigh as some of the woman's demonic features began to recede. Finally, he put his hand to her forehead. With one final glow, a coronet was placed upon her head, and she appeared human.[2]
-Sanzo's dream jumped ahead a few months-
Kouryuu groaned as he walked into his master's room.
“Don't you two ever stop?” he asked the room's two occupants.
He had just interrupted a very passionate kiss between Koumyou and…Denai~
Sanzo gasped as he jerked awake. He remembered now. He remembered everything about Denai and his master. They had been lovers. She had lived with them for almost a year. He could still hear her scream as she cradled Koumyou's bloody body close to her own. She had been there when Koumyou was murdered. She wouldn't stop crying. That had made Kouryuu even sadder than he already was. It had scared him when she growled at the other monks to run, nut it had hurt, almost as much as losing his master, his father, when he saw her lift a hand to remove her limiters. He couldn't lose her too, and if she removed her limiters he would indeed lose her. So, he had put a hand out to rest on top of hers, and he let her see how much he needed her. She had held him, and cried. He cried too. They comforted each other, until it was decided that it was time for them to leave the temple. After he received the title of Sanzo, Denai had sent himon his way. Now he knew that she had sent him to find Goku. That's when it really hit him…why she didn't want to be around him. It had hurt her that he didn't remember. He almost cried now, at the thought of hurting her, even if it was unintentional. When she had left ten years ago, it had hurt him terribly. It had felt like a part of him had shattered when she left. So, he could only imagine how she felt now. To have him physically closer than ever, but out of reach in every other way. He wanted to go to her, to tell her that he remembered. However, he knew it wasn't a good idea as he looked out the window. It was morning, and knowing Goku, he had already dragged Denai to get breakfast. He would wait.
[1] ok, I know that anyone would recognize what Koumyou and Denai were doing right away, but I thought that I would make the young Sanzo a bit naïve…heh, I don't know if that worked, or if he just looked stupid for not knowing.
[2] I know that Sanzo can channel divine energy because of who he is, and his relationship with Goku, but I thought that I would give Koumyou the same ability with Denai, because they have a special relationship too. I'll get into more of Denai's past, and why she needs so many limiters later. There is a reason…
