Chapter 25: The Sun Will Still Shine On Me

Sanzo's sweat trickled down his neck. He looked afar and gazed with his dreamy look away at the end of the canyon road which was still miles away. His thoughts ran through the memory of him and Shyirin three months ago.

Under the stars, Shyirin was lying on the soft green grassy ground, pondering about life.

`What will happen after this life? Will I be with Sanzo still? Will I be able to hear them when I die? Will I be able to see this sight again?'

She plucked a dandelion from the grassy ground and twirled it around her fingers. She sat up and blew the soft dandelion. The petals blew apart from the main stalk and flew away from each other.

`Death… is it a wonderful thing? Or is it a terrible occasion? I wonder… will my life be reborn once more or will I have to face Heaven or Hell? I've done so many terrible things in my life and I wonder: Can I be atoned for them? Sanzo, however, he will still be in Heaven… I'm a sinner and I'm not perfect like Sanzo… I will feel so devastated if I am apart from people I love… I don't wanna die… I wanna live like this forever…'

"Why are you so worried about?"

Shyirin turned around as Sanzo walked forward and sat beside her. She gazed at the Sanzo's face as the moonlight shone on him.

`They're right… Sanzo is so beautiful, whether rain or shine, or night or day…. He is so… perfect…. Am I envious? No, I shouldn't be.'

She shook her head and sighed. Suddenly, she felt a soft warm thing lean against her shoulder. Sanzo leaned on her shoulder as they both gazed at the stars. Shyirin felt her face flush all pink.

"You still haven't answered my question, Shyirin…"

"It's nothing… really…"

"Then, why do you look all worried?"

"I-I was worrying about life after death… I was just wondering if we will still be together even after this life is over."

Sanzo chuckled at Shyirin's answer.

"W-What are you laughing at? It's definitely not funny?!"

Sanzo stop his chuckling all of a sudden. Shyirin's face changed into a pout and blushed all over. She turned away from Sanzo in embarrassment.

`He laughed at me! Sanzo must've thought I was being childish by now.'

Shyirin felt her body pulled closer towards Sanzo and his arms around her. Shyirin flushed all, looking nervous as her heart began beating faster and faster.

"Stop feeling childish…"

`See? I knew it! He thinks I'm childish!'

"… and a worry-wart at the same time. We will not know what happens to us in the after-life. Even so, all you have to do is to believe in us and somehow, we will work out."

"You-you really think so?"

"Shyirin, are you nervous?"

"About death? No, I'm not..."

"No, about me holding you like this right now… you seem nervous…"

`Am I being nervous? No, I shouldn't be! After all, we've done this so many times… But…'

She looked around. She flushed even more and felt her heart throb harder.

`…we're both alone now, under a romantic atmosphere… and no one is around. Hakkai, Gojyo and Goku must be fast asleep by then… it's absolutely quiet here…'

Shyirin felt Sanzo sliding his arms away from her and wrap around her waist.

"I like this kind of atmosphere… with no one around… and only the girl I love with me now."

"Sanzo… what if you have to leave me on another mission? Will you come back for me? Sometimes, when you leave me, I feel so … alone. I wonder sometimes, is Sanzo still alive or has he forgotten me? I can't bear the thought of you dying…"

Sanzo laughed as Shyirin turned around and hit him in his chest.

"Sanzo! You're mean today! You don't even care about me when I'm telling you what I feel! I feel such an embarrassment… you don't even care of the nights I spend crying, thinking of you! You don't even care about me, sitting here, waiting for you to come back! You don't even care… you don't even care…"

Tears begin to swell up in her eyes and she wrapped her arms around Sanzo. She wiped her tears away on Sanzo's robe.

"I love you so much that sometimes, I have these kinds of silly thoughts… I feel so stupid."

She ran her fingers around Sanzo's soft golden hair and felt some of her tears trickle down her face.

"Sanzo…please don't leave me again. I don't wanna be alone."

Sanzo put his hand lovingly on her head and patted her head softly, carefully not to hurt her.

"Shyirin, life is not predictable. I also hate to leave you lone but there are so many missions to be completed. How sometimes I just wish, I wasn't someone important. But somehow, I feel thankful being one. If I weren't a Sanzo by today, will there ever be an `us'? I can't promise you that I will never leave you alone… But all I can promise you is that, if I ever have to go out on a mission, I will surely return to you… no matter what happens…"

Shyirin held Sanzo tightly as she began to feel his heartbeat in every second.

"That's enough for me to hear. As long as you don't leave my side, I'll be happy enough to wait for you, forever."

"Then, forever it is."

"Damn!"

He felt Hakkai jerk the brake as he felt a thunderous slam onto the floor.

"What now?"

"Look ahead of you, you corrupt monk. Or are you too blind to see?"

Sanzo gazed at the far distance. There was a big boulder blocking their way and there was a figure standing ahead of them. Gojyo lit up his cigarette and leapt out of the car. He walked a few paces and leaned against the front of the car.

"Hey, your boulder is blocking the whole road. Would you mind moving it away?"

The figure laughed. He shook his dark-blue hair and patted the boulder.

"You'll have to get thru' me first if you wanna move ahead."

"Zeltorfe's henchman, eh?"

Sanzo aimed his gun at the figure.

"Hey, don't get Master Sanzo angry. He's pretty scary when he's angry."

"I agree with Gojyo. Sanzo is very frightening at times."

"He's mean and scary and I really mean it."

"Do you all want to die?"

The figure laughed again and walked a few paces forward.

"Would Master Sanzo like to know that his little friend is also wandering around the continent?"

"What friend? I have no friends."

"Hmm… I'd say it was a cute little one…. With long brown hair and brown eyes… expert with guns as well…"

"Sanzo, isn't that Shyirin?"

The figure snapped his finger and nodded. Sanzo spat to the ground and fired close to his head, shredding a little of his long blue hair.

"Now, you made Master Sanzo snap."

The figure touched his hair as it slipped through his fingers. The figure clenched the hair tightly in his grasp.

"Let me show you the true power of Leonaste, the Water Master!"

He chanted a few words and began gathering energy within his hands. His blue hair surrounded his body in a sphere shape around him. There was a strong evil aura surrounding the area.

"Sanzo, this is no ordinary man."

"He's a demon, to be exact."

"Yes, his foul smell can be scented from here."

"Sanzo, what do we do now?"

Leonaste opened his eyes and forced the energy out from his palms. A sphere with strange scriptures writing all over it suddenly became visible to the naked eye.

"Damn, I should have noticed!"

"What is it, Sanzo?"

"This is one of the 7 chosen demons who can open the elements of the Earth. It works like a portal to each element. If only I have seen the sphere marks."

"Now that it's too late, what are going to do?"

Sanzo thought hard. This wasn't any ordinary demon they were playing with. This time, this demon is one of the Portals that open gates to elements (Which works something like the Portal [in Saiyuki Outside Part One, Hikari]. Sanzo had no idea what they're facing against.

"Goku!"

"Yes?"

"Try slowing down his movements. Gojyo and I will try to attack him from the far end. Hakkai!"

"Yes?"

"When the gate power is released, make sure you are there to put up a barrier. It won't hold much, but it will at least save our lives."

"Then, let's get ready to do this!"

Goku summoned out his staff and ran swiftly to commence attack onto Leonaste. Sanzo and Gojyo began attacking as well. But all was not well.

"Damn!"

All their attacks were worthless. The barrier sphere that surrounded him blocked him from any harm. The demon laughed hard.

"Any bright ideas?"

"Now, it's time for you to taste my power! Tsunami!"

Goku leapt for safety on top of the canyons as Leonaste opened his portal at them. Great waves emerged from the gate that was widened and gushed out strongly.

"Hakkai! Now!"

Hakkai opened his shield quickly. But this can't go on for too long. The water was too strong and it could break their defense any moment. Sanzo bit his lip as he felt defeat coming their way.

"Corrupt monk, are you feeling frightened now?

"Hmm… not one bit!"

"Guys, we better think hard. I don't think I can hold on for too long and I wonder if Goku's alright."

Suddenly, a gunshot was heard and a loud scream echoed behind. The water disappeared as there was another figure wearing a hood standing there. Goku leapt down and hugged the figure.

"You're safe!"

Hakkai and the rest who were in the car drove on forward to greet Goku and the figure. Sanzo felt his throat turn dry.

"Shyirin?"

"Hey corrupt monk, your sweetheart is here. Aren't you going to say anything to her?'

Sanzo kept silent as the rest met Shyirin. Shyirin removed her hood and smiled at the rest.

"Hey guys."

The fire crackled as it began devouring the wood. Sanzo and his party sat down around the fire while Shyirin was busy polishing her gun.

"So, what brings you to this lovely place?"

"I didn't come here because I wanted to. I also had a mission."

"What mission this time? Undercover spy on Sanzo?"

"No, an undercover spy on Master Akiyoshi, the mastermind behind this all."

The group became silent. Sanzo lit a cigarette and exhaled out the smoke.

"What about it?"

"I'm surprised that finally Master Sanzo finally opened his mouth."

"Shut up, Hakkai. You're getting meaner nowadays."

Shyirin laughed and turned to talk to them.

"It seems that Akiyoshi has taken over Zeltorfe's group after Qien Ping's death. I was to go to the Land of Shadows to gather information about him."

"But there is also some other reason you wanted to go there… you said you wouldn't take another mission from Kanzeon Bosatsu… What is your other motive?"

"That… is none of your concern. That is top secret priority."

"I see."

"I'll be leaving tomorrow. I shall continue my journey to the Land of Shadows. Right now, I need some sleep. Goodnight."

Shyirin stood up and walked to the nearest cliff. She climbed up to the next spot and slept on top of the cliff. Gojyo folded his shoulders and sniggered.

"Looks like the corrupt monk has some problems in his hands now."

"Do you want to die?"

Gojyo looked at the gun that was pointed directly at him and shook his head.

"Not now. You can kill me after I find a pretty girl to die with. Goodnight."

That night, Shyirin couldn't sleep. She sat up straight and looked up at the sky. Stars were glowing brightly that night and the moon was shining as proud as she could. Shyirin sighed.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Shyirin turned to see Sanzo sitting not far from her, looking up at the sky, with a cigarette in his hand. Shyirin turned away.

"I won't know."

"You still mad at me?"

"You know I won't be."

"Liar."

Sanzo threw away his cigarette and looked sternly at Shyirin. Shyirin gazed at his eyes and chuckled a little.

"I noticed you only smoke when you're disturbed."

"Don't change the subject."

Shyirin smiled and winked at Sanzo. She pulled her hair back to display the sapphire earrings she had on her ears.

"If I was, would I be wearing these?"

Sanzo kept silent and grunted. Shyirin moved closer to him and looked up at the skies. She sighed and leaned against the rock wall.

"Sanzo... if you're too mad at me for coming, I might as well leave you alone to cool down."

"No… don't go… stay here a while…"

Sanzo held Shyirin in his arms and put his head on her shoulder. Shyirin laughed at Sanzo.

"It was something like this about three months ago, wasn't it? I was nervous back then… but now, I'm not."

She moved Sanzo's hand to her heart.

"See? It doesn't beat fast anymore. I feel much calmer now with you, knowing that you are by my side right now. I want this feeling to last forever."

Sanzo kissed Shyirin's neck softly a few times as Shyirin held Sanzo's hands tightly around her.

"Shyirin, I want to say so many things but I can't find the right words to say them. I feel so…"

Shyirin shushed Sanzo up and turned around. She gazed at his dreamy violet eyes and put her finger on his lips. She moved closer towards him and kissed his soft tender lips.

"You don't have to say anything at all, Sanzo. Your eyes tell me everything."

Sanzo felt so much love in him and laid Shyirin down on the ground with him. He kissed her lips softly, a few times and held her close to his heart. Shyirin felt so loved in her whole life, she never want to let this feeling go, ever.

"Sanzo… before I go to sleep, I wanna tell you this…"

"What?"

"No matter how much you've changed or your feelings decreased for me; I will always love you until the end of my life. No matter what happens."

"Believe me; I will do the same for you."

The two of them slept peacefully as the stars made a glimmering show for them and the bright moon watch over them like their Guardian Angel.
