Shido hated celebrating his birthday. He hated the instance his (human) friends placed on celebration, he hated the cake, and the presents, and the constant press of people around him trying to congratulate him on living yet another year. He hated it all, and that was why he was currently hiding out in his room, curled up on his bed and growling at anything that came near him, even the animals.
"Who cares so damn much about my birthday anyway?"
"We do," Kazuki hummed from the doorway. "It's another year we've had you in our company, as our friend and companion and comrade."
"Another year I lived when my family died."
"Shido, that was a long time ago."
"It was only eight years ago, Kazuki. Eight years isn't that long of a time."
"Shido... ...I guess that means it's been nine years for me, then, huh?"
"Yeah. Another year we lived when our loved ones perished. Another year I had dreams of watching my father die."
"Another year you lived on, as he wanted. Another year you and I have been friends."
"Oh, we were friends before? Here I was thinking that all those times you tried to kill me, you wanted me dead."
"Minor technicality," Kazuki waved his hand in a dismissive gesture. "You are missing my point."
"Am I?" Shido leaned against Kazuki with a grumble and a sigh. "Kazuki, I don't want to celebrate this year."
"Alright, Shido. This year it'll be just you and me."
Shido gave a happy purr before Kazuki kissed him. "Kazuki?"
"I still wanted to give you a present, you know."
"Oh, really?" Shido laughed as Kazuki gently shoved him backwards onto the bed.
"Mmmhmmm."
"Well then, I guess I'm gonna like celebrating my birthday with you this year."
"You'd damn well better," Kazuki purred.
Shido just laughed.
