A/N: This is my first fanfic, so if all goes well with it I may also do an Inuyasha fic.
I'd like to dedicate this one to Josh who believes in my writing.
Arrival!
He quickened his pace as his heart began to thump loudly in his chest. He was finally going to see them. He was almost there. For two years he worked hard volunteering in Africa. He dug ditches, taught school children, handed out rice bowls, and any other number of odd jobs that needed to be handled. Volunteer work suited him. He liked being able to make a difference. He now knew that he would always give back to the community throughout his life. He might even consider becoming a teacher like Yankumi.
Yankumi. Just thinking of her brought a smile to his face. He had written as often as he could and so did she. He even got the occasional care package from her and her adoptive brothers Tetsu and Minoru. While Yankumi sent him things like books or stationary, he chuckled when he thought of the sake and candy that the “boys” had sent him. He even received letters from Kyo and Yankumi's ojiisan, which was an honor that he didn't take lightly. Though brief and to the point, hearing from them made him stick his chest out with pride at the thought that he was worthy of their time.
Suddenly his feet came to a stop in front of the place he had longed to see again. He had been so caught up in his thoughts that it didn't register at first how he got there. He chalked it up to automatic pilot. After all, this place was ingrained in his memory. How many times had he come here? It was the only place he had ever considered “home”. The house he grew up in could never compare to the warmth he felt when he saw the sign for the Kuroda family. They were his family. There was no doubt in his mind. He would do anything for them. He would shed blood for them, had shed blood for them.
Now that he was here, he found himself feeling something a little foreign to him… he was nervous. Oh he knew that they would be happy to see him and that they would welcome him in with open arms. There was one family member in particular though who had the power to break him with one look. Yankumi. How many times had he dreamt of her? How many times had he smelled her letters to find a small trace of her scent on them? A soft hint of oranges could be found on every letter. Gods, how he wanted to just breathe her in forever. He ached to hold her in his arms and kiss her until she couldn't catch her breath.
After graduation, it was clear that there were feelings between them that couldn't be denied. They had both risked their lives for each other numerous times and that kind of bond was not easily broken. There were looks and small touches that spoke volumes of their trust and want of the other. Though they had only shared one kiss before he left, it was a kiss that promised many more to come. It took every ounce of strength he had to walk away from her at the airport to make his flight. It was only due to her whispered promises and assurances of future moments together, that he could even leave at all. They both knew what this trip was meant to him. That was another thing that he loved about her. She understood his need to do this and never questioned his reasons to go.
How long had he been standing there? With his right hand raised he paused only briefly before the door opened right in front of him. He smiled at the man in front of him and his smile was returned by the older man in the doorway.
“You're up early.” he grinned.
“You've arrived!” replied the one man whom Shin respected the most in the world.
“That I have ojiisan.” calling him grandpa was precious to him.
Before he left, the two had become very close and the older man had shocked him one day by asking that he please call him grandpa since his granddaughter was sure to marry him soon enough. He swore he had blushed to his toes that day, but had no reason not to accept his request.
“You must be tired, please come in and rest a bit.” he said as he led the young man inside marveling at how much he had changed in just two years.
He thought back to one of the first times he had spoken with Shin. He had asked that he not reveal his granddaughter's connection with the Yakuza. He was impressed, to say the least, when not only did he promise to keep the secret, but also helped to save Kumiko from a dangerous situation shortly thereafter. He knew that this boy was different. He had guts and honor and he was extremely loyal to his treasured granddaughter. He knew then and there that he would do all he could to make sure that Shin became a part of his extended family and did everything in his power to protect him where he could. He smiled to himself at how Kumiko would react to his home-coming. He'd heard her sighing while gazing out at the window from time to time. She would not be able to contain her excitement when the two finally met again. He made a mental note to hold a “mandatory” meeting to give the two some much needed time together.
He was brought out of his musings when Shin asked, “Where is everyone?” Knowing that he only used “everyone” out of respect, he quickly suppressed a chuckle and told him that they were all doing their daily routines. Tetsu and Minoru were out at the market buying fresh ingredients for a welcome home dinner and Kyo was at a meeting with the others. He noticed the look of anticipation on Shin's face as he was about to reveal where the object of his desire had gotten to.
“Kumiko is at her new school.” he grinned as he watched Shin smack himself in the head, having forgotten that the new semester had already begun.
As he left Shin in his room, Shin vaguely heard the old man say, “Wait until she sees him, we'll have to add soundproof walls to the house soon.” Shin had the good sense to blush. He figured he may as well sleep since he figured she wasn't due home for a few hours and if her grandfather was right he'd need his rest. He flopped down on his futon and fell into a pleasant sleep full of dreams of Kumiko and all the various ways she would welcome him home.
