Author's Note: I'm back! Sorry there was such a huge delay. My mother had passed away the day before I posted part 22, which is why I put this on hiatus. My mother and I were very close, and I felt her loss very deeply. I later wanted to get back to writing, but I was eight months pregnant with twins at the time, and sitting up in a hard desk chair for more than about five minutes was not going to happen. After the twins were born I started thinking about writing again, and my father passed. Needless to say, this has been a very difficult time for me the past several months, and I am now using writing as my chance to relax and unwind from the stresses of four kids of my own and helping my sis with estate and probate stuff as much as I can from half-way across the country. I won't promise when the next part will be out, just that it will come, eventually. Thanks to those who have stuck with me, and welcome to anyone new to this story. Ryuichi sat on the opposite end of the couch from Shuichi, stunned by the state he found the other singer in. Ryuichi had seen him sad, depressed and seemingly devastated, but this was practically catatonic. Shuichi was dressed in light pink pajamas -- courtesy of his nurse, who apparently thought it was a good color for him -- and his hair was clean and combed, but he sat without really connecting to anything. The television was on with the sound turned down, and he seemed to stare at it, though he hadn't reacted to anything that flashed across the screen. Yuki-san had told him that Shuichi had been this way for nearly a week. He refused to eat anything, so he was being given nutrients through the IV tube, and he seemed to have just given up.
Ryuichi had been watching him now for about ten minutes, Kuma sitting silently beside him, the both of them waiting to say anything to the other in case they missed something. The show changed on the television at the quarter hour and Ryuichi glanced at it, seeing a re-run of a popular music show that Nittle Grasper had been on a few weeks before. Ryuichi shrugged, remembering it as an appearance that had been rather boring, since they hadn't been able to sing anything and had instead just talked with the host before showing their latest video to the audience. The volume on the program slowly rose, and Ryuichi looked around, thinking someone else had to be in the room before realizing that Shuichi held the remote in his hand, half-hidden in his lap. Ryuichi paid only partial attention to the show, instead watching Shuichi as the interview went on. He and Tohma had stayed in the background for this one, instead letting Noriko take the spotlight. The fans had loved it, since she usually took a back seat and let the boys speak for the group. Yet she was immensely popular, with many of the fan letters they received being from girls saying they wanted to play keyboards so they could be in a band just like Nori-chan. Ryuichi thought it was cute.
The interview didn't take long, as Noriko just talked about where the last leg of their short tour was taking them and said the usual about how they were looking forward to seeing all their fans. When the video started, the volume increased a bit more, and as Ryuichi watched, he saw tears form and roll down Shuichi's cheeks, though there was no change in his expression and no other indication that he'd been really paying that much attention to the television. Ryuichi frowned. This was just no good at all. There was no way Shuichi was going to make more music and be shiny again if this kept up. He frowned, watching Shuichi with his head cocked to one side, listening intently as Kumagoro imparted his wisdom.
Ryuichi stood as Yuki Eiri entered the apartment, escorting a slim middle-aged woman in a smart-looking pantsuit. He looked her over carefully as Kumagoro had a few more things to say, namely about the too-large glasses that rested on her small nose and the way her hair was pulled back in a tight bun.
"Ryuichi-san, this is Hirohito-sensei. She's here to see Shuichi. You'll have to come back."
Ryuichi nodded, turning a bright smile on the woman as he did. "Ok, Eiri-san!" He chuckled lightly to himself, even Kuma finding it amusing the way Yuki's forehead crinkled when Ryuichi called him 'Eiri-san.'
He lingered over putting his shoes back on in the entranceway, waiting until the woman had taken the remote from Shuichi's unresisting hand and turned off the television. He watched as she sat down, then hopped back into the living room.
"Kumagoro BEAM!"
The pink bit of fluff went flying across the room and found its mark right in the back of Shuichi's head. Shuichi had tipped forward at the yell, and the bunny then slid off the back of his head and landed in his waiting hands. Shuichi looked up, turning to look at Ryuichi as he walked forward to retrieve the bunny.
"You'll never be better than me of you stop trying, Shuichi. I don't want to win by default." Ryuichi spoke quietly, the woman just a few feet away looking stunned and confused by his actions as he picked up the stuffed bunny from Shuichi's slack grip and gave him a bright smile. "Be shiny, Shu-chan!" He shouted at the top of his considerable voice and then turned and trotted out the door, pausing only long enough to pick up the shoe he hadn't had time to put on yet.
Shuichi blinked a few times, then got silently up from the couch and walked past Yuki and Hirohito-sensei, locking himself in Yuki's office where he grabbed a pen and a pad of paper and began writing furiously.
