A Lover's Pain

Chapter One

She watched as his blond hair shimmered and danced in the light causing her heart to clench with unfulfilled longing. How she hated him for making her feel this way, the deep emptiness of unfulfilled longing, desire and love. It was ironic wasn't it? That her father was right all along. That no man could love her after what she had become. A soldier.

She took in a deep breath hoping to dispel her father's image but it hung in her head, tormenting her with the knowledge that he was right all along.

Her fist clenched tightly, hating the man she had loved for so long and hated the man who made her what she was. She hated them all, the burning sensation clenched in her gut forcing her to see how things really were.

My god! She was such a fool, an idiot who did not even notice what was happening before her very eyes! She cursed herself, hating herself even more, everyone saw it but her and yet she clung, unwilling to let go. It reminded her of Relena and her relentless stalking of Heero, she had secretly scorned the girl for her foolish crush and now look at her! She was a bloody hypocrite!

She sighed, not even her anger can hold her anymore.

She was empty.

She stood in the corner, hiding in the shadows and watched as he hugged his fiancee and knew that her fragile heart hadn't withstood a chance. No one had told her, she hadn't even known until she had accidentally stumbled upon his engagement party. Everyone had been invited except for her. It wasn't enough that she had admitted her feelings for him or her promises to him of always being by his side, it just wasn't enough. Her hopes were just that, hopes.

She felt as if she was in limbo, time had no meaning as he stood up, his wine glass raised in a toast to his beautiful fiancee and his engagement, his eloquent words of love moved the crowd, causing them to cheer in agreement. She forced herself to turn away, unwilling to witness the kiss between the happily engaged couple and left the party, her expression perfectly calm, belying the turmoil that lay within her.

Milliardo pulled away and touched Dorothy's hair, she had such beautiful hair. She smiled at him, running her thumb across his lower lip before leaning forward to kiss him again. Something at the corner of his eye caught his attention and his head jerked up surprised, startling her. Noin, he thought in disbelief, what was she doing here?

Dorothy followed the direction of his gaze, her eyes widening in surprise and turned to him, her eyes reflecting her displeasure.

"What is she doing here?" she hissed furiously.

"I don't know," Milliardo whispered back, his tone low and cold.

His eyes widened further as he watched Noin leave the room with a calm expression as if she didn't know about his engagment. He had always secretly pitied Noin and her devotion towards him. He had never known what to say to her without worrying if he was hurting her feelings or not and it came to the point where he was avoiding her.

"Do you think she knows?" Dorothy asked her eyes flickering over the people who were also watching Noin leave. The Gundam pilots were all here, including Lady Une and Relena Peacecraft as well as some very influential people.

The Gundam pilots were calm and cool as if Noin's appearance didn't surprise them, could one of them have orcastrated this? She wondered. She looked at Lady Une and her eyes widened as the woman mockingly raised her wineglass and smirked before drinking from it.

Milliardo's icy blue eyes narrowed and his nose flared furiously, he should never have invited that bitch.

"I think she does," he growled furiously

"Then why does she appear so calm, she did claim to love you after all."

He paused for a second as if thinking about it. "I don't know."

Heero's eyes flickered to Trowa who was calmly drinking his red wine, there was something about him that he couldn't put his finger on. He had always known that there was more to Trowa then what he usually showed to the world but at this moment he couldn't seem to figure it out.

What was it?

And then he saw it.

A flicker of satisfaction gleamed in Trowa's eyes as he stared at the newly engaged couple before it vanished replaced by his usuall cold blank eyes.

Heero frowned wondering what was going through his friend's head but he had a sneaking suspicion he already knew.
