A Wind of Cherry Blossoms
"Damn it, Heero! What are you trying to do to me? First you're hot,
then you're cold. Would you just make up your mind? You're driving me
insane!"
A shot rang out.
"Aaagh! Shit, that hurts. Heero, why the hell did you just shoot me?
Don't you dare walk away from me! Don't you dare leave me here!"
Heero walked out of the room.
"Damn you, Heero! Damn you to hell!"
"Hey, call 911. Somebody's been shot! Don't worry, man, you'll be
fine."
As he slipped away into the blackness, he could hear her singing his
lullaby.
The angel awoke. She could feel him slipping away from her again. Damn
Heero to the lowest of the seven hells for hurting him. The confusion
and turmoil in his mind filled her own, and she struggled to make
sense of the painful images. The instinctual rage to protect her mate
filled her mind, and she had to force herself to calm down. She
thought of the Arctic wasteland that had been the green serenity of
her home, of her mate who lay sleeping beneath the ice. The pain
suddenly froze, adding to the ball of ice surrounding the center of
her soul. Hurting Heero would only hurt him. He had to figure things
out on his own. He was not Saphir; he didn't need her to protect him.
She settled back to sleep. She would awake when he needed her again.
"I can't believe Heero shot you. What'd you do?"
"Nothing. One minute he's kissing me, and then he shoves me down and
shoots me. He's completely lost it."
"And you're still stuck on him, aren't you?"
"God knows why. He's insane and homicidal. I honestly thought he was
going to kill me. Doesn't he feel the same affection I do?"
"You need to break it off with him."
"I know, I know. It's just..."
"Stupid to stay with him. Leave him now."
Trowa and Quatre left the room. Duo sat by the edge of the bed and
finished getting dressed. Then the phone rang.
"Hello?"
"I'll meet you at the bridge in an hour."
"How do you know?"
"I always know when you need me. I'm your Guardian, remember?"
"Thank you."
"I'll see you in a hour."
The angel hung up. Well, she wasn't an angel, not really anyway.
That's just the way Duo thought of her.
"One of these days I really need to find out exactly what an angel
is," she thought as she walked towards the bridge. "Probably, whatever
it is, I'm not it. I'm not even a good Guardian. Getting involved with
a human is so idiotic, and I know it. He just reminds me so much of
Saphir. But after we get through the current crisis, I'm leaving. This
isn't healthy. If I spend much more time among them, I'm going to
start thinking like them. Now that's a scary thought. I never want to
be that irrational and emotional. It's a miracle that they've lasted
this long. Anyway, I thought Duo learned his lesson last time. Guess
not. This time I'm going to make sure he gets it, even if I have to
bang it into him. And once He's got it, I'm out of here. Maybe I'll go
back to Europe. It should be fairly easy to hide there. Plus, it's so
beautiful this time of year. Maybe I'll even go back to sleep. But I
think I'll miss the human race. I think I'll stay a little longer,
purely for scientific reasons.
"Duo, there you are. You are a complete idiot! Idiot, idiot, idiot! I
thought I had made it clear last time."
"I know, I know, but..."
To Duo's complete and utter surprise, he broke out into tears.
"Ack, damn it! Shit. I promised I wouldn't cry."
She took Duo into her arms.
"Sssh. It's alright, everything's alright."
"No, it's not. I'm head over heels for him. I want to have him fuck me
so much, even now. Athana, what am I going to do?"
She hit him over the head.
"No cursing. What have I told you about that?"
"A dirty mouth shows a dirty mind."
"Good. Now come on. Wipe off your face. We're going to dinner at La
Chavals', then you're staying the night with me."
"Does that mean what I think it means?"
"No. Falling into bed with me is not going to help you sort out your
Heero problems. It'll probably just confuse you more. So, as tempting
as the offer is, no."
"Aaww!"
"Stop complaining. I'm paying for dinner."
Heero watched as Duo walked off with the strange woman. They made an
odd but striking pair. The woman was taller than Duo, with long, dark
brown hair; skin the colour of milk, and large eyes that were almost
the same colour as Duo's. Of course, Heero only noticed her movements.
She moved like a cat, quick and graceful and deadly.
"Once I get rid of her, Duo will be mine. Tonight, she dies."
Several hours later, Duo sat in Athana's high-rise apartment. He had
some wine with dinner and was just a little drunk.
"I just don't see why you still love him. It just doesn't make sense."
"Emotions don't always make sense. Can I have some more wine?"
"No."
"Aw, come on. I can't drown my sorrows even a little bit?"
"No. It isn't healthy."
"Spoilsport. You know, I can see right through that nightgown."
"That would explain why you gave it to me. And here I thought you were
being noble when all you wanted was a cheap thrill."
"I did buy it thinking how good it'd look on you. The colour really
does suit you. The cheap thrill was just a bonus."
"See, Duo, you're smiling. Life can go on without Heero."
She walked over and kissed him on the cheek. Well, she intended to
kiss him on the cheek. But Duo, even drunk, had lightning-fast
reflexes. He grabbed her by the waist, swung her down onto his lap,
and proceeded to kiss her very thoroughly.
"Duo, let go of me." Athana said when he finally let her up for air.
"Now why would I do that? I mean I can't think of a better way to get
over a man than by having a beautiful woman in my lap."
"Duo, I'm not kidding. I stopped doing this sort of thing with you for
a reason. It's..."
Duo shut her up by kissing her again, while his hands roamed slowly
over her body. He found the ties of her bodice and began slowly
undoing them.
"Duo, this really isn't a good... Oh, God."
Duo's mouth had just found the sensitive spot on the side of her neck.
She was suddenly unable to think about anything except the amazing
things Duo's tongue was doing. Even the man staring down at them
through the skylight seemed unimportant, at least until he came
crashing through it.
"I'll kill you, you bitch!"
"Heero, what the hell are you doing here? Heero, just put down the
gun. I'll go with you, just put down the gun."
"You stole him from me. You're going to die."
Heero advanced on Athana, pointing the gun straight at her. She backed
away until she was pressed against the edge of the balcony."
"Heero, please don't hurt her. It's all my fault, Heero. Just put the
gun down. Shoot me, if you want, but don't hurt her."
"I'll punish you later, Duo."
A shot rang out. Duo started forward as a red spot appeared on the
dark blue bodice of Athana's gown. She looked very surprised. A soft
gasp escaped her lips. Heero took a step forward and pushed her off
the edge of the balcony. Duo rushed to the edge to do something,
anything, but it was too late. She'd already disappeared from view
behind the masses of cherry blossoms carried by the wind.
"Oh, God, no. Athana!"
Duo sank to his knees. He didn't seem to have the strength to stand
anymore. Tears began to run down his cheeks. He felt the gun barrel
press into his hair.
"You're mine, Duo Maxwell. Now and forever more."
