Chapter 4
Wufei reached to hit the restart button on the modem tower, cursing his luck. He turned his chair to face Heero.
"What I want to know, is what kind of organization would abduct Duo?"
Heero sighed and shrugged, running his hand through his messy hair. "I don't know, maybe someone who was with OZ during the war?"
Wufei nodded absently. "But wouldn't we have received some demands or something by now?"
Heero leaned his head on his hand, huffing impatiently "I don't know Wufei, it depends on their motive."
The Chinese pilot moved to the couch next to his friend. Wufei placed a hand on the other man's back.
"Heero, why don't you get some rest? You must be exhausted."
Heero nodded and rose. His bed just seemed so comforting right now, even if the statistical scenarios and mission possibilities running through his head certainly weren't.

Duo awoke to a pair of warm, watery brown eyes. The face before him withdrew, startled. The form drew itself up and stood. Duo shrank away shuddering. The form placed a hand on Duo's shoulder. The longhaired man whimpered and started to shake in involuntary fear.
"It's ok, you can relax. I'm not going to hurt you."
Duo let out a deep shuddering breath and lay still. The young boy before him could be no more than twelve years old. He had long blonde hair and seemed familiar with the fact that the man in front of him was chained and violated. The boy gently turned Duo's face so he could get a better look, and grimaced visibly. Duo's chin was covered in drool and blood from where his attempts to silence himself had gone awry.
"I brought some things to clean you up a bit, but I don't want to touch your wounds without your permission. Do you want me to clean your face and wounds?"
Duo nodded, still shaking a bit from shock and pain. The boy had a gentle touch and calm demeanor; he could find nothing to fear from him. The boy dropped Duo's chin and backed off to grab an object that he had left in the corner, the boy produced a few cloths and some disinfectant.
"My name's Cor, I'll take care of you when I can." Cor's voice was soft, and gentle, like his touch.
Duo shuddered as Cor cleaned his lower lip and chin, cleaning the blood from his pale skin.
"I'm Duo," The boy smiled.
"Nice to meet you Duo. I'm glad you're alright, some people refuse to let me near them." His face turned from the sweetly smiling little boy, to the true face of a young person who had seen too much pain, too much suffering to fill most people's lifetimes. Duo saw himself mirrored in the boy. He was another, like the ones on L2 that he lived with and protected for as long as he could. Cor resumed his previous happy bedside manner.
"I'm going to have to clean your chest and stomach now, it's going to hurt. There isn't anything I can do about that." Duo shivered but nodded.
The disinfectant hit his chest like fire, even as the tender movements cleaned away growing infection, he shivered with the smoldering sensation.
"I really am sorry about this, Duo, I know that it stings."
Duo just nodded weakly, feeling his strength sapped out of him by the very atmosphere of the room. Cor finished cleaning the shallow gashes and raised welts on his chest and reached for his bleeding rectum. Duo shook his head emphatically, causing his head to throb indignantly. Even as the boy stopped his advances Duo continued to pull on his chains, causing blood to trickle down his arms. Cor's eyes widened, he placed a hand gently on Duo's bleeding wrist.
"Duo, Duo stop it, stop!" Duo stopped his struggles and began to shake like a scared animal. Cor shook his head sadly. "No matter what I do, it's never enough." The young boy sighed heavily and started towards the door. Duo began to struggle against his chains.
"Wait……please…"
Cor looked startled but came to Duo's side.
Duo fought back tears, and whispered softly, "Talk with me…please."
Cor smiled sadly, nodded his head and settled himself before Duo's `cot'.
The young boy shifted uncomfortably, neither of them seemed very willing to initiate a conversation. Finally it was Duo who spoke.
"Earlier, when I opened my eyes, you were startled. Why?"
Cor smiled, happy to answer. "I've never seen anyone with eyes like yours before." Duo nodded, understanding.
"Do you have any water?"
Cor smacked himself in the head, lamenting his forgetfulness. "Of course I do, how stupid of me."
Duo drank from the offered canteen, letting the water cool his burning throat.
"Thank you."
Cor smiled and pulled Duo's hair back from his face. The young boy before him sat back and stared at the weak man before him.
"I brought scissors, I could cut your hair. It would give them less of a motive." Duo sighed and shook his head weakly.
"I've never cut it in all my life, despite everything. No one could convince me to cut my hair. I'm not going to start now."
Cor nodded and looked away, staring at the slowly swinging light bulb. Duo began to let the tears run down his face again and started to sob. Cor was taken aback but reached out to touch the older man's cheek. Duo jumped at the soft contact. The boy withdrew his hand and looked on as Duo began to babble to himself softly, reverently, like a prayer.
"Heero….Heero, please help me…please, please."
Cor retrieved the disinfectant and began to dab absently at the wounds Duo was causing on his wrists during his struggles.
"Duo, you'll make it through and you'll be free, I promise." The boy wanted to bite his lip, he hated making promises he couldn't keep but it seemed to be calming Duo a bit. Duo ceased to sob and breathed heavily.
"Heero…Heero, please."
Cor knelt and wiped at Duo's tears causing him to withdraw, but he opened his eyes and breathed calmly. The young boy smiled at Duo's calm.
"Hey Duo, why don't you tell me about Heero?" hopefully having Duo talk to him would keep his mind off of other things. Duo blinked and allowed himself to slowly relax.
"Heero means everything to me, but it's been so long…." Cor sat back, noticing Duo's relaxation.
"It's been so long since what?"
Duo's shoulders dropped and he flexed his numb fingers. "Since we've spent any real time together, we used to best friends…we used to talk about the war, and Relena and everything, anything we could think of. Not anymore, he sits and broods in front of his damn computer and I go out and get drunk so I can't think about how much I miss him."
Cor reached for the canteen and took a sip. "Want some?" Duo nodded and allowed Cor to pour some water into his mouth. The boy screwed the cap back on the canteen.
"So, how did you meet him?"
Duo chuckled to himself, a sick dry chuckle. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
Cor shrugged. Perhaps Duo didn't feel like talking to him about it. Duo sighed deeply closed his eyes, deep in his memories. The boy shifted himself and decided to make a brash move, he took the disinfectant and poured it over Duo's mangled opening. The wounded man's eyes shot open and his mouth opened in a silent scream as the disinfectant cleaned his bloody opening. Cor grabbed Duo's numb hand and began to make shushing noises. The man blinked and nodded.
"Thank you, but it will only put off the infection for a little while, with the disturbances it's bound to encounter it's going to fester."
Cor looked down at his feet. "I shouldn't have done that, you made it clear earlier that you didn't want it touched."
Duo nodded and smiled a little. "There are many things I want that I can't, or shouldn't have."
Cor smiled back, Duo seemed to be very relaxed.
"Undoubtedly you're wondering what a kid is doing in a hellhole like this." Duo eyed the boy and nodded.
"Yes, I am."
Cor settled down and began to tell his tale. "Not everyone here is a sick pervert. A good part of them are only here to reap the benefits of being in a gang; a place to sleep, some half-way decent food. You just have to be careful where your loyalties lay." Cor shrugged. "I don't know where I came from. Maybe I was born here. Maybe I was dropped here. Maybe I just wandered in. No one's bothered to tell me and I don't care enough to ask. Some people here are ok, I mean it's not like I'm close with anybody, so long as I stay out of Raven's way, don't kill anybody and don't leak info, they don't give a shit what I do." Duo nodded his understanding. Cor smiled. "Sometimes they go gentler on the ones I take care of."
Duo settled and looked almost comfortable. "I was a soldier. That's where I met Heero. I won't go into detail on that." Cor nodded, silent. Duo drew breath, and told the part of the story he could tell. "I'm from L2, the poorest colony. There were so many orphans, so many people dying." His face contorted in pain. "Even today, the last place you want to be caught without money is L2. I was an orphan there, stayed in a church with some other orphans, but never got adopted. Then one day soldiers came, burned down the church. Father Maxwell, Sister Helen, all the orphans, all of them died, but not me, I lived, although I can't tell you yet whether that's a good thing or not." He smiled bitterly. "They called me `Maxwell's Demon', the only survivor of the massacre." He choked down his tears. "I lost the only family I ever had. After that, I was too old to look for adoption, so I sold what I could for money. The only thing I had was my body."
Cor nodded, he had seen it all happen before. Duo didn't tell him any more of the hurting stuff, he couldn't tell him about Solo, his best friend, his brother.
"After that, I stowed away on a ship, I didn't care where it was going, so long as it wasn't L2. I became a soldier."
Cor smiled a half smile. "So you worked for OZ then?"
Duo shook his head, unwilling to lie to the boy. "I was a Gundam Pilot," he whispered softly, under his breath.
Cor's eyes widened, putting two and two together, the braid the name Duo, the mention of Maxwell, the name Heero. "Damn! You're 02 aren't you?" Duo nodded softly, looking away. Cor brightened.
"I remember the Eve Wars! Well, not really the wars, but the explosions, and how everyone was scared, and depressed. I got my hands on a History book a few years ago after somebody stole it for resale."
Even as the young boy grew excited, Duo darkened, thinking of the days where he had hopes and dreams, when he and Hilde were ready to take on the world with their junkyard. Days when he daily hacked, encoded and prayed, looking for Heero.
Cor stood, smiling down at the braided pilot. "I have to go Duo, I'll be back when I can to help your wounds."
Duo nodded; he felt so weak. He felt as if his world was coming down around him, that was reaching out for Heero's hand only to have it smacked away by a dark figure called Raven. `Is this fate? Am I destined to be killed here, the object of torture by tens of unnamed men? Am I destined to think of the one I love down to my last breath, hoping for freedom and praying for death? Death, something I have administered to countless individuals. Did they think of their loves as I killed them? Heero, the one whom I love, can never return my love and he will never find me. I would give anything to see his face, to feel his touch, to feel him carry me from this grave with love in his eyes. I would give anything for him do burst in here, guns blazing and create a happy ending' Duo sighed and lay his head upon the mattress. The god of death knew better than to hope for a fairy tale ending.

Heero awoke with a start, ready to attack whoever had disturbed him. Wufei automatically jumped into a fighting stance until his friend slumped down and sighed. Heero groaned as he looked at his clock; 9:10 he must have been exhausted to sleep so late. Wufei shifted uncomfortably.
"Five years since the end of the war and we still can't get rid of instinct." Heero shook his head.
"I usually don't do that, I…just had a strange dream." Heero muttered. Wufei nodded.
"It's all the tension lately. I've been having some bad ones too."
The two began to walk downstairs to breakfast.
"It wasn't a bad dream though, just strange." Heero said. Wufei began to make Heero some coffee.
"Oh, how was it strange?" Heero plopped himself down on a chair.
"I can only remember a part of it, Duo was there and Trowa and Quatre. Trowa and Quatre were making out in the corner of a club and Duo was sitting in the middle of the dance floor and screaming and wailing, he had bruises all over him. Every once in a while he'd stop screaming and sobbing hysterically, calling out for me, but I couldn't, or wouldn't go to him."
Wufei stared. "You know I could interpret that for you."
Heero frowned at him. "I'm not quite sure I want it interpreted, thanks."
Wufei smirked. "Too late I already have, it's just I haven't told you what it means."
Heero glared at his Chinese friend. "Looks like I'm going to hear it anyway."
Wufei chuckled, nodded and joined Heero at the table. "The fact that Trowa and Quatre are there most likely means that you're not used to handling something like this without the help of the rest of our gang. The fact that they're making out most likely represents that if they get together they may, or in your opinion should follow through on that vibe that EVERYONE was getting from them last time they were together. Duo in the middle of the dance floor screaming is your subconscious telling you that Duo's been screaming out for help and even though there are many capable bodies around no one is helping him. Which is pretty accurate considering the last year or so. When he's sobbing continuously for you it represents how, you think that wherever he is now, he's depending on you for help. The bruises mean that you feel he's hurt wherever he is, either emotionally or physically or maybe even both. You not going to him shows that you feel helpless in the current situation."
Heero shivered, Wufei seemed to have everything right on. "You seem as happy as a little girl, translating my dream."
Wufei scowled. "I'm happy to finally put all this to some use is all. Any other dreams?"
Heero pouted. "Yes, but I sure as hell don't want it translated."
WuFei laughed and shrugged. "Whatever Heero, why don't you do some hacking on that laptop of yours and I'll see what I can do through my contacts in the city."
Heero nodded and went to his room to start hacking. As he sat down and began to boot up the little computer he decided that he could interpret his other dream just fine on his own. It still sent shivers down his spine; he had never kissed ANYONE like that before, sure he had dated a few people, even a guy, once, but nothing ever got serious. He had sex with a few of them, but kissing like THAT was strictly off limits, he didn't want that kind of attachment. Yet the thought of holding Duo like he did in his dream made him shiver with desire, something like the old familiar blood thirst, but so much warmer. With a sigh he set down to the endless code that seemed to plague every single mission and duty in his life.
