Chapter 8
The houses in the slum were barley four walls and a roof. Lean-to's dotted the area and half starved children stared at the passing vans with wide amazed eyes. WuFei shuddered and looked away in disgust.
"I didn't even know this place existed…" Heero nodded, never tearing his eyes away from the window.
It was not long before they reached the group of houses that Quatre had indicated. Rashid jumped out of the driver's seat and motioned for the rest to stay in the vans. He cornered a child who was staring, fascinated at the vans. Questions were asked and answered and something was pressed into the kid's hand. He jumped back into the car, gave the kid a wink and motioned for the rest of the vans to park in a nearby alley.
The Manganacs gathered round, distributing weapons and ammo. Rashid drew himself up and called for attention. "The kid said this is the place. He said a real nasty gang holes up in those buildings there, they've got plenty of prisoners and are lead by a real vicious guy." He pointed out the general area of a few entrances and gave each man an assignment. Trowa nodded.
"We do not know the layout of the building, or the size. Radio for help if you run into trouble." Heero shifted his weight and looked around at the thirty nine battle ready Arabs.
"Do not move any of the prisoners, the EMT's will take care of them." Heero closed his eyes and let out a deep, tired breath. "Radio me immediately if Duo is found." The manganacs saluted smartly and broke into groups to storm the building.

Quatre sat in front of the vidphone, an annoyed expression on his face. Since when had the Preventers put people on hold for so long. The screen flickered and Sally's image appeared on the small screen.
"Sally!" the woman's face lit up with a smile, happy to see the small Arab man.
"Quatre! Hey, what's up?" Quatre's face became solemn and he gave up the pretense of a light chat.
"No small talk, Sally. Duo's dying" the young women's brow pursed, her eyes wide.
"What the hell?"
Quatre shook his head. "He's been abducted… a gang. The Manganacs are taking care of it. We need you here, you have better emergency training than we could hope to get at a hospital anyway. Can you bring some help too?" Sally nodded, already yelling orders.
"I can be there in four hours, no sooner." Quatre nodded.
"I've already notified the hospital, the police and got some EMT's on their way. I can't tell how long it's going to take to get the gang out and the EMT's in." Quatre hated being left out, he had to make to with keeping things moving smoothly. Sally nodded, making hasty arrangements. "Oh, and Sally…" Sally raised her head. "Wufei misses you." Sally smiled and killed the connection.

Heero crept through the maze of dilapidated hallways and rooms. The place seemed as empty and quiet as a tomb. He clutched his gun to his chest, his eyes piercing the darkness ahead. His hand felt a door, hidden in the wall. A small smile played upon his lips as he kicked it open. A stairway down; jackpot. The communicator buzzed in his ear, two manganacs had knocked out a drunk wandering in the corridors above. No sign of anything from the other pilots. He got no sign of any victims found.
Heero had come upon a small common room, a couch here and there and a table with a flickering light. One enemy, sleeping on a couch. His hand held a whip, he had been oiling it before he fell asleep. It was all too easy to jam a syringe of strong poison into his jugular. If he lived through it, he would be permanently paralyzed. Heero muttered into the com unit.
"I'm in…one down." Heero muttered. Wufei's voice came over the speaker.
"We got nothing yet Heero, just a few dead ends." Heero sighed.
"Doors are hidden, check the walls."
Wufei's voice came back on. "Roger that Heero." He trailed his hands around the walls, leaving nothing unchecked before taking the corridor to the left. Heero walked stealthily down the hall, feeling, breathing carefully and silently.
Trowa's voice came over the comm. "Behind you Heero, found your guy, taking the right."
Heero mumbled in reply, no need to blow his cover this early. There was a large dorm-like room to his left. Cots lined the walls, a few were occupied with thugs, arguing and placing bets on a card table. Heero pulled a smoke grenade from his vest. It was all too easy.
The floor began to slope downwards. He continued to feel the wall. The com hissed with the manganacs' voices. They were beginning to infiltrate farther, one or two knocked out a thug. No one had needed to use a gun yet, their cover was still sound. WuFei had found three newly captured victims, sent them outside with a nearby manganac for first aid and anything else they might need.
Abdul radioed in, he was covering the vans and any victims brought out. The ambulances were starting to arrive. Heero growled, there were a number of thugs in a common room up ahead. One of them was arguing with a kid. Heero hissed in frustration, what the fuck was a kid doing here? He considered his options. He didn't want to open fire on the room with the kid in there. He didn't want to risk using the smoke bomb with so many of them. There was too much of a risk he'd miss a few. He settled for some tear gas, popping on a mask and throwing two grenades. He picked his way around and knocked out the gasping men. He picked up the kid and hauled him back up the hallway.
"Trowa, you find anything?" the com crackled.
"Yeah, couple of Victims, real bad shape."
Heero bit his lip. "Duo?"
Trowa sniffed. "Not yet, sorry Heero." Heero eyed the kid, he was starting to recover.
"I've got a kid. Not a victim, I'm gonna get him to show me to the head man."
Trowa muttered some, ending the conversation. Gunfire exploded from somewhere above. Heero cursed loudly and shook the kid.
"Who runs this thing?" The kid blinked and looked around. He looked intensely at Heero, a slight smile in his eyes.
"Raven."
The soldier grunted. "Show me."
The kid nodded and walked down the corridor towards the room that had now cleared of gas. More gunfire echoed around the place and Heero cursed some more. The kid turned abruptly into a curve and beckoned for the soldier to follow him. There was a hidden door that the boy indicated at the right side of the hall.
"This is where he does his stuff, I'll wait here." Heero nodded his thanks and listened to the gunfire upstairs.
"Thanks, kid" the boy nodded.
"Cor, it's Cor." Heero drew up and kicked in the door with a side kick to shatter concrete.
The sight inside the room was one to chill blood. Victims were strung up on a line, most of them so wounded they were barely breathing, some of them weren't breathing at all anymore. One or two of the captives were so crusted in blood and other fluids that it was impossible to tell.
A man clad all in leather, with black hair down to his shoulders was drawing a knife through the skin of one woman. She was gagged and freshly captured, struggling strongly, trying anything and everything. Heero growled in disgust.
Drawing down to a crouch, he pulled out a handgun and loaded it. He was so far completely ignored. He crept forward. He could sense the man's pleasure and was repulsed. He knew that Raven was toying with him. It was impossible for him to not have heard him come in. Heero drew the gun and pointed it at the man. Raven turned and smiled. Heero was taken aback; the man's face was covered in blood, his eyes two burning black coals.
He snickered. "You would shoot me? I am defenseless. I have only this knife, you know…" Raven's laugh chilled the soldier down to the core of him. Heero growled, the com was buzzing with excitement in his ear, agitated voices were exclaiming about something, it was important but he couldn't hear it.
He threw the gun to the ground and drew a knife, long as his forearm and sharp enough to split hairs. Raven lunged, Heero countered with one of his own. The black haired man hissed and circled round. Heero kicked out, catching the man in the jaw. He followed with a quick stab to the stomach. Raven went down, blood spurting from the deep wound in his abdomen.
Heero sniffed, the man might have been a powerful sadist and leader, but he wasn't much of a fighter. Raven's eyes flickered and a demented grin lit his face. He slammed himself against Heero, knocking him soundly into the wall and cracking his head sharply into the wall. He raised his knife and drew it hard down Heero's chest and stomach, imbedding the sharp blade in Heero's thigh as he fell forward.
Heero growled and hissed in pain. He wasn't expecting a treacherous move once the man was down. Heero drew the man up to eye level, rage seething in his eyes. Raven's eyes bulged and he began to spurt blood from his mouth. Heero's blade had found its mark; straight through the man's throat. Heero hissed as he pulled the shorter knife from his thigh. He discarded the man and the knife in a corner.
Cor was standing, wide eyed and amazed in the doorway. Heero could once again sense his surroundings, he could feel the eyes of the captives on him. He looked at Cor.
"Do you have a key?"
Cor nodded, drawing a key from his pocket. "Skeleton key." Heero nodded and took the key from Cor. Skeleton keys, designed to unlock most locks of a certain design were more than useful, they were pure fricking gold on some occasions. He unlocked the bonds of the captives strung on the wall. He motioned for the conscious ones to stay where they were.
"Help is on the way, wait here for the EMT's" They nodded and began to help each other with wounds or other bonds.
For the first time Heero could hear the buzzing in his ear as words. "Heero! Heero! Are you there?! Are you Okay?" Heero closed his eyes and drew long breaths of air.
"I'm here, I got the leader" WuFei's voice buzzed in his ear, but it was soft and hesitant.
"Heero? …we found Duo…"
Heero's eyes opened in shock. "….Duo…" Cor tugged at his sleeve.
"I can show you to him, I know my way around."
Heero nodded, he felt tired and weak, as if the fight had taxed him more than he had thought.
