Chapter 12
Duo stared out the window, darkness had wrapped itself around the world, and the day was gone. Day after day, Quatre had come to visit him nurse him, prod him into something resembling a human. He refused to speak to him. Wufei had come, scowled at him tried to produce anything remotely similar to a conversation from him. He refused to speak to him, Trowa had been there too, with Quatre. He never said anything, but his gaze hurt. He refused to speak to him.
He had seen Heero only twice, once in the parking lot, he had come to pick up Wufei. From his window he looked out over the parking lot, he looked down and saw Heero lounging against their car. The second time was early in the morning, while he had been waking. Heero's head was peeking around the doorframe, with a sullen, sad look on his face. He would have liked to speak with him.
It was late at night, the hospital had gone quiet. He could not sleep, there was a feeling of waiting about the place, a silent dreading of what the morning might bring, nights in the hospital were worse than the pain of the days. There was a shifting at the door, he turned to look. Heero stood there, long coat in hand, determination in his face.
Striding forward he unplugged the steadily beeping machines, the drone that had simply become part of things for Duo was gone. Hesitantly he took the wires off his chest, pulling the tubes from his face, Heero extended a hand to him and pulled him off the bed. He landed softly on his good leg and softly placed the other down, it was now supported by a light brace, and surprisingly there was no pain when he placed it down. Heero wrapped the heavy coat around Duo's shoulders, and he finished pulling it on himself.
"He…" Heero silenced him with a swift shake of his head and a finger to his lips.
"Come with me."
Duo limped after the Japanese man's retreating form, following him down the hall to the elevator in his hospital gown, a heavy coat and a pair of slippers. When they arrived at the door the guard just smiled and inclined his head, letting them pass, Heero must have been arranging this. He shepherded Duo into the passenger side seat of the car without a word, refusing to acknowledge Duo's questions.
They drove for quite some time, leaving the city, and traveled through the suburbs. Heero drove like he knew exactly where he was going. The roads were empty and the clock read 2:00 AM. It seemed like ages before they stopped, at a hill, covered in grass, the moon shining over them and the stars twinkling in the velvet that was the sky. Heero closed the door behind him, and helped Duo to stumble to the crest of the hill and sit down, moments passed between them until Heero spoke, his tone was soft, the harsh monotone he used to snap orders was gone, and his voice was comforting.
"Someone told me once that the moon was beautiful from Earth." Duo squirmed beside him, the ground was cold beneath him. Heero continued, "He told me, that from the colonies it looked like a graveyard." Duo turned to look at him, Heero had flung himself down on the dead grass as if it were a summer day and he was basking in the sun. Heero sighed heavily, turning towards him, and said, very softly as if Duo might break "I think I broke his heart."
Duo's face contorted from the curious look he had to the insufferably sad. He looked up into the sky and began to cry, soundlessly, he did not sob, the tears slid down his cheeks without his consent, lit by the stars above, it looked as if he were crying diamonds. Heero pulled his arms around him and pulled him into his embrace. The two cradled each other until the tears faded. Heero pulled him closer wiping the tears away, acting the strong, handsome night in armor.
"It must have been terrible." Heero whispered. Duo looked at him puzzled, before pulling away, wrapping himself in his own arms and shaking his head.
"It was only sex, Heero."
The Japanese boy's rage rose and was palpable. He managed to keep his voice to a dangerous whisper, which was in some ways worse than the screaming, barking voice that was expected.
"Duo, what do you mean?"
Duo was not cringing away as expected instead he was glowering, looking enraged.
"I said it was just sex, what's wrong with that?"
Heero looked away, unable to look at the confusion in his friend's eyes. "There was nothing about that that could be `Just Sex' Duo."
The American drew himself up, ready to stand. "Do you know how I spent my childhood, Heero? Do you?" Duo's voice was rising to a nearly painful pitch. Heero looked on, calmly and coolly, the pain in his eyes more evident with each word spewed forth from Duo's mouth. "Do you KNOW how I survived for three years? I was a WHORE, Heero! A filthy dirty prostitute! And not the pampered prostitutes you get around here! Oh no, I was an L2 whore! And not just that, I was a child. I was sold out to the dirtiest people alive. God knows how I didn't get more diseases that I could live through! Do you know how often I got paid for my trouble?"
Heero could not bear to see the pain in Duo's eyes, reliving each rape in his mind, no wonder he looked at this most recent torture as normal. Duo could not stop raving, tears flowing from his eyes without cease.
"While you where training with J do you know where I was? I was lucky to be sleeping in a fleabag MOTEL that I had been brought to. I was being slammed into the wall by people who I had never met! I picked pockets, ate trash, and lived through it, by some miracle! I…" Heero stood to look Duo in the eye.
"Duo, life with J was not a pleasant matter. Soldiers meant to die in a war have no room for human emotions. Weapons to kill people with are not supposed to think. And don't think that twisted old men don't have purposes for keeping an emotionless little boy around either."
Duo was speechless. Heero's manner was not one of pity, it was stern, but not demanding. "I can understand the pain of the things you describe; metal hands are, after all hardly tender in their administration, I learned to withstand all types of torture techniques, and I too was just a little boy. But I have learned that it wasn't sex that J put me through. It was something dark and vile, something they call rape, a small word like that can not sum up what it does to you, can it?
I can hardly call myself experienced in such matters, however I know sexual encounters that are pleasant, mind blowing experiences, I have even been subject of a few," his mouth twitched a little at the side, an almost smile, "It is indeed a long story that I have no intention to share with you, however, not now anyway."
Duo fell silent. Heero had been…J…sex? Questions flowed around in his mind and he could not keep his balance. Heero held him up, although he kept sliding down.
They sat again, and as Heero had said, the moon was beautiful.
"Heero I don't want to live, I can't keep going on my own like this. Why? Why didn't you kill me? You could have ended it."
Heero's eyes narrowed, and Mars was reflected in his eyes.
"Duo, I thought I was your friend, I'll help you, as much as I can."
Duo began to shed silent tears. "Heero, I don't need a friend, I need a place to be alone, to finally end it all, I can't stay, I can't live a day without wanting the coma-blackness again."
Heero scowled, and growled deep in his throat, he pulled Duo closer, and cupped his chin in his hands.
"That is why, Duo, I'm offering you more than my friendship."
Duo's breath hitched, as Heero moved in, slowly and carefully placing a chaste kiss on Duo's quivering lips. The kiss deepened, but it was slow, and gentle, in a way that Duo had never been kissed, and Heero had never experienced, had never felt the urge to experience. Duo's tears still spilled from his eyes, but he was finally warm, and maybe, he was ready to try.
The car ride was just as endless on the way back, but filled with a pleasant silence, filled with a finality, a hope that maybe, things would get better. Duo stared at Heero, thinking. He had pleasant sex? He'd heard about it, but never thought of it as much more than a fairy tale. What was that all about? Sometimes his tormenters would touch someplace deep inside him that would make him wriggle with desire and shame.
"Heero?"
The answer was slow, his eyes were glued on the road. "Yes Duo?"
"Would you tell me about it? That time?" Heero sighed, and began to speak.
"Duo, I'm not inhuman, I experience sexual tension as much as the next person, I was trained how to make sure it would not get in the way of a mission, I masturbated, cold meticulous and efficient. After the war I avoided it, it was messy for one thing, though sometimes it was necessary.
Anyway, that's off topic. There was a guy at work who had taken a liking to me, he propositioned me, I don't really know why I said yes, but I did. He taught me everything I needed to know, and we messed around several times, we took turns being dominant and submissive. There was nothing ever there, it was an incredible experience for me though, I always expected pain, no matter what, but I learned, and was not so frantic after a while when I was bottom I always walked away happier, satisfied, and the act was… always pleasant."
Duo shifted in his seat, looking out at the moon. "It is Beautiful from earth you know," he said.
Heero smiled. "I know."
