Heero blushed as he quickly changed the provocative channel; he had been in bed for almost four days now. After he left the hospital, Sally had nearly had a conniption insisting that he move in immediately. As a result he was here in this squishy waterbed, that made him nauseous, watching cheesy soaps that didn't help his churning stomach, not to mention the blonde doctor made him a damned buffet every morning.
Rolling his dark eyes, Heero heaved a deep breath and blew his bangs out of his eyes, "It's not so bad…" he mumbled grudgingly, the bed was actually pretty relaxing, the soaps were a guilty and embarrassing pleasure, and Sally was actually a pretty good cook. His chocolate locks shook into his eyes as he looked up, hearing footsteps coming up the stairs.
Not a minute later the petite blonde woman walked into the room, a tray of food in her arms and a smile on her face. "Ohayo Hee-chan!" she called to him, knowing how much he adored the pet name, despite any effort he put forth to say otherwise.
Merely staring back at the chipper woman, and trying to keep the greeting from passing his lips, the small boy lost the battle and allowed his hard expression to soften, "Ohayo," he said softly. Picking up the remote once more, the Japanese pushed the round button, effectively turning off the television. "What's for breakfast?" he asked looking up into cornflower eyes.
Tilting her head and smiling at the boy, the young woman walked over to the bed, and gently placed the small tray in front of him, "I know how you love fresh fruit. So I went to the farmer's market yesterday after work." As she spoke she eased herself onto the bed next to the small brunette, being careful to mind his fragile condition.
Blue eyes widened as he breathed in the aroma of the fresh tea, deeply. His hungry eyes roved over the busy plate, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, grapes, and other fruits were sliced accordingly and drizzled over in a light honey. Lifting the stark white teacup to his lips, blue eyes closed in pleasure, and a soft hum escaped pink lips, "How did you know I like Passion green tea?"
The blonde blushed and smiled, winking, "Isn't it a little dark in here?" The brunette blinked at the sudden question, his brows furrowing gently, and he opened his mouth to protest before she spoke again, waggling a finger at him. "Now I want you to eat as much of that as you can, and don't get out of bed except to take a bath, got it?" Her cheerful eyes were sharp and serious as she spoke, but her expression was soft and covered with concern.
She sighed smiling, and lifted her hand to brush aside the thick bangs, "Perfect soldier or not, you're very weak from the lack of food and sleep." Dark sapphires turned away and looked to the thick curtains blocking the morning sunlight, he liked the darkness and hoped the doctor wouldn't notice the closed drapes. He mentally groaned, however when he felt the weight shift on his bed, and the slender figure came into his line of sight as she pulled gently on the curtains revealing a bright morning. He cringed, his eyes burning from the sudden light, and looked away, "Sally…"
She looked out the window, overlooking the disappointed tone in the other's voice, "Isn't it a beautiful morning?" she asked, still gazing out the window into her backyard. The boy in bed remained silent and his heavy eyes slid down the blonde woman's straight back, "Sally-"
"Well, I'd better be off!" she interrupted his statement, her voice was high and strained as she spun around quickly to face him, "The director of the board will have my head if I'm late for surgery again." The ex-pilot didn't have the heart to speak as his eyes took in the visibly pained expression on the doctor's face. His eyes softened looking at her façade, blue eyes were closed in a tight smile, and yet the smile didn't reach her eyes, and her hands were clasped tightly together in front of her.
The braided woman slowly made her way back over to the bed and gently caressed the Japanese preventer's face, careful to not look him in the eye, "Get better…" she whispered and leaned down placing a chaste kiss on the warm forehead. Heero opened his mouth to speak as the blue-eyed woman quickly made her way to his bedroom door, "Sally…" he said again, for the third time hoping to get a word in. Hearing her name, the doting wife stopped; her back to the small boy she had grown to care for so deeply. "Eat your breakfast, honey. Demitri will bring up your lunch later. Call if you need anything." Without even turning around again, the blonde walked hastily out of the room.
The bed-ridden boy sighed as the door shut softly, "Why won't you talk to me Sally?" For the past few days the blonde had taken care of him the way his mother never did, the Duo had done in the past. She had nurtured him, and talked to him in a gentle but motherly fashion, and the Japanese found himself having stronger feelings for her. She was the strong comfort that he had confided in, and she supported him in his decisions and added her advice on his future plans, advice he valued. This morning, however, she was distant and almost fake with him.
Feeling suspicion settle uneasily in the pit of his stomach, the boy wiggled nervously in his sheets, unconscious to his action, and picked up a strawberry. `She knows something…' His thoughts swirled around him as he nibbled on his fruits and sipped lightly on his tea. Pushing aside the still full tray, moments later, the young man carefully eased himself out of the bed and walked into his bathroom, his white teacup in hand. As he bent over to slowly twist the faucet knob, his shady thoughts continued to plague him until he settled into the warm water.

"CAMERON MAXWELL!!" An impish smile spread over round cheeks as a small boy with a full head of dark locks and sparkling amethyst eyes giggled and ran clumsily with his chubby hands over his mouth. A tired looking woman, with a pale complexion, dark circles under her dull eyes, and a pronounced stomach stomped down her messy hallway calling angrily after her only son, "GET OVER HERE RIGHT NOW YOUNG MAN!" her angry bellow echoed. The tiny tot held back another fit of laughter as he hurriedly dove under his bed in hiding. The stout woman huffed as she walked into her son's room, her light blue eyes roving the cluttered space, "You're in so much trouble. Don't make me come find you!"
Glittering amethysts darted down quickly in a worried expression; the small child was carefully weighing his options until he finally decided to crawl out from under his bed, "mommy?" Hearing the squeaky voice of her young son, the dark headed woman quickly turned around, an angry scowl prominent across her face, "Get over here right now."
The little boy bit his lip at his mother's expression; her tone frightened him as he hesitantly stepped forward into her immediate reach. When her son was close enough, the angry woman stooped down and slapped his full cheek squarely, causing his small body to teeter and nearly fall over. Misty violets quickly tuned to look back up into burning blues, he knew not to cry but it was still hard to rein in the tears when his mother hit him.
"What did mother say about her garden?" the fair-skinned woman asked. Pink lips began to turn red, as the small boy bit onto them harder, "Sowy mommy, I-" Another slap stung the already red cheek and the small head flung to the side with the force of the blow. "What did you say?" the angry tone asked again as the teary eyes turned back to focus on her hard ones.
Holding his breath and his sob in, the small child struggled to think of what he did wrong, lest he derive another slap from his mother's palm. The pale hand rose again to strike at the confused boy before he suddenly stuttered out a frightened `mutter?'(1) Nodding at her little boy the pudgy woman spurred him on through clenched teeth, "Yes? Care to tell me what I said about my flowers?"
The little brunette was visibly torn as he tried to form the words his mother wanted to hear, "Don pway in de garden?" With simmering eyes, and a waning patience his mother nodded, "Very good. What were you doing picking my flowers then, Cameron?" The violet-eyed boy looked away and fiddled with his dirty overalls, "I wanna give dem to daddy," he mumbled. Plucked brows shot down angrily, "That's no excuse, young man."
She grabbed his twitching fingers and slapped his hands harshly causing the brunette to wince in pain; "You've been a bad boy, Cameron. You're going into timeout!" Hearing that he was going to be put in timeout the young boy began to tug at the hands within his mother's steel grasp, his eyes growing large and round in fear. Only infuriated more at her son's resistance, the pudgy woman sneered angrily as she jerked and shook the small body forcefully and eventually grabbed the boy by both arms and dragged him kicking and screaming into the hallway.
Old violet eyes that had seen too much for the life of the braided man they belonged to blinked curiously as the braided man outside the door to his urban house thought he heard faint echoes of screaming from inside. Frowning slightly as he slipped the key into the doorknob and walked inside his curious eyes turned to those of worry as he heard his young son screaming and pleading. Running through his living room and into the hallway that led to his son's room the braided man growled in his throat at the scene before him.
"Hilde," the woman, had her back to him but he could see her surprise in her rigid back as his cold voice reached her ears, "What in God's name are YOU doing to MY son?" his voice was low and held in the anger he was feeling towards his wife. The haggard looking woman slowly spun around, the closet door was open and the little boy halfway inside had tears flowing freely down his red cheeks, "I'm punishing your son," she answered in an equally menacing tone.
With clenched fists the ex-pilot stepped forward threateningly, "Give him to me," was all he said his violet eyes burning into hers. She swallowed, but hid her fear by sneering and jerking the sniffling boy forward, thrusting towards his father's legs. Once he was free the boy quickly stumbled forward, hiding behind his father's legs, and hugging onto them tightly. Angry violets melted away and softened as the slender man turned around in his son's grasp and bent low to pick him up into a gentle protective hug.
"You ok Cam?" he asked, leaning the small head against his shoulder and turning around to glare at his wife again. The brunette boy nudged his cheek against his father's shoulder to comfort himself and sniffled in response. Placing a large hand over his son's small head the braided man decided to listen to why his wife had been attempting to lock their son in a heater's closet. (2)
"Duo, he went through my garden and I-" her tirade was cut off as he leaned forward, his face seething but his voice low so as not to scare his already terrified son. "You were shoving him in that fucking closet, Hilde!" She frowned, put out with being cut off and crossed her arms over her full chest, "I've told him before to stay out of my garden but what does he do? He goes and picks some of my seasonal tulips!"
Violet eyes rolled at the sound of his stout wife's reasoning, "He can barely talk much less remember all the rules you lay out for him! Jesus Hilde he's not even five and you were about to lock him in a closet!" his voice was rising in volume now as he was growing more agitated. "Whatever Duo. I'm tired of that little brat, who I didn't even want, ruining everything I try to do-" The small boy in Duo's arms winced as he heard the definite ring of a slap silence his mother's yelling.
The violet-eyed man had a deep-set scowl on his features as he heard his wife yelling about his son, "Don't you ever call my son by anything but his name, and he doesn't ruin anything Hilde! I wanted him and I love him! He doesn't ruin anything! That would be your job!" he yelled, pointing a finger directly at her chest. "You love him so much you've forgotten about me! About what we had!" his wife screamed, her arms out on either side of her.
Full lips parted and slim brows shot down as Shinigami gave his dark-headed wife an incredulous look, "What?!" he asked completely amazed, "You're blaming our problems on him?" his voice was tinged with disbelief. The pale woman grit her teeth and nodded, with clenched fists, "We used to be so happy, I told you I didn't want children and now we have him," her voice dripped with disgust as she looked at the small body in her husband's hold.
The father's grip unconsciously tightened on his child's small body, "Hilde?" he asked in shock, "I love him, don't you?" The woman he thought he loved now looked back at him with what seemed like dead eyes and a cold countenance, he knew they were having problems and his feelings for her were dissipating but he thought their love for their son would keep them together. "I love you, Duo," her voice was void of love much less emotion and it nearly sent a shiver down the braided man's spine when he heard it.
His eyes were shadowed as he stroked his son's soft hairs gently, "You love Pilot 02. The idea of an adventure," he looked up at her with the same cold eyes she gazed at him with, "Look at us Hilde!" She merely stared back at him, incomprehension swimming in her indifferent blue eyes. He growled at her stare and pressed on, "You hardly leave the house! You never lost the weight from your pregnancy, you're always so cold and pale, we haven't even slept together in nearly six months!"
Bright violet eyes flickered from side to side, searching for even the slightest hint that she understood, and sighed when he could find none. "I wanted to stay together for Cameron, but I can' t do this anymore," he said and tried to walk past his wife. Her white arm shot out suddenly and caught his elbow in a bruising grip, she faced one direction while he didn't turn around to face her, "Why did you give him that middle name?" Violet eyes widened at the unexpected question, "I doubt it's because of camaraderie or because he was a hero," her voice was steely and hard. Duo swallowed and attempted to speak but she went on, " You always loved him and it held you back. Well now you have an excuse but just know I bore that child for YOU, Duo. Can he do that?"
Violet eyes closed and he tilted his head down to place a kiss on his tense son's head, "Goodbye Hilde." With those words he stiffly walked to his bedroom and closed the door packing up everything that belonged to him and his son. He and his Cameron would leave in the morning and he would go stay with Quatre and Trowa. The braided man sighed smiling as he sat down on the bed looking into his son's wide violet eyes. The small child grinned back widely and blinked, suddenly remembering something as he reached into his overall pocket.
A small genuine chuckle made its way out of Duo's throat, as he looked as the small red and yellow flowers in his son's chubby hands. Reaching out and picking them up he winked at his only son, "Thanks Cam, they're beautiful." The small child only smiled wider and leaned forward to hug his father tightly. The ex-piolt sighed, resting his cheek on the top of his son's head, "I love you cam." He leaned back and curled around his son on the bed falling asleep in the protective embrace.
