The stout woman stood in the doorway unabashedly, a deep scowl darkening her pale features. Her hands on her hips, cold blue eyes shifted from her son dispassionately to glare heatedly at the older Japanese beside him. Just seeing the ex-pilot again made her blood boil and she felt her fists ball at her sides.

She was about to speak again, about to scream as many obscenities as she could at the brunette before another interrupted her. “Hilde?!” Hearing her name, she glanced across the large table into slanted eyes and nodded a forced greeting to the Chinese owner of the house.

Heero watched in shock as the shorter woman continued to glare at him spitefully. `How did she get into the house?' he wondered; his eyes drifting behind her slightly to see a sheepish Demitri slightly hunched over. Obviously the old man had simply been doing his job when he opened the door, never expecting to be bowled over by the impatient woman.

The blue-eyed man watched as she opened her mouth to speak, completely ignoring the obsidian-eyed man. “Don't you?”

Heero's mouth went dry at her bold question and flat stare, his heart speeding up. Staring back at her, he couldn't unscramble the thoughts in his mind to answer. Did he still care about Duo? Did Duo still care about him? How did Hilde know any of this?

Her level gaze eventually narrowed into an impatient glare, and she placed her hands on her hips, her stance displaying her annoyance. “Answer me, you bastard!”

Everyone around the table reared back at her outburst and was about to leap to the brunette's defense when Duo suddenly stood from the opposite side of the table, his braid flying from the forceful movement. His eyes were dark with anger and his face twisted angrily as he regarded his ex. “What the hell are you doing here, Hilde?” his voice was curt and clipped.

Stiffening and turning her venomous gaze to the braided man, she leaned forward slightly, tauntingly, her assault on Heero forgotten. “Can a mother not come and visit her only son?”

Heero's chest puffed slightly as he sucked in a sharp breath at the woman's callous response. Without a second thought, he leaned over to lift up the young boy from his chair and plant him firmly in his lap. Had Hilde noticed, she would've lost her temper much sooner.

Violet eyes caught the slight movement from across the table, but otherwise remained completely focused on the woman before them. The once `happy' couple stared each other down, neither willing to look away or back down. “I think you've seen enough of him, Hilde,” he said, his voice low.

An unnaturally thin eyebrow rose in question, and she barked out a harsh laugh, “I haven't seen my son in over a week.” She pointed a hard finger at the braided man, “Since you took him away from me, if you remember.”

Duo stared at her incredulously, his jaw dropping a little at her accusation. What the hell did she expect? How dare she try and pin her wrongs on him. Clenching his teeth, he forced himself not to advance on her, “You said you didn't want him, Hilde.”

Dismissing his point, she continued, “His mother misses him.” The smile that accompanied her words should have belonged on a deranged mass murderer's features, not a loving parent's.

Duo's jaw ached as he continued to clench his teeth, he finally broke eye contact, his head hanging. “Do you miss hurting him?” he said softly, almost undetectably.

The four other ex-pilots all heard, however, and stiffened.

She merely rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her full chest, “Don't be so damned dramatic, Duo.” She looked him over with disdain, but couldn't control her nervousness when he kept his head down.

“Do you miss locking him in closets for hours on end?” the father's fists were beginning to tremble at his sides as his voice slowly gained volume.

The full-figured woman began to rock slightly on her heels, her eyes narrowed. Listening, Sally watched with a pained expression, the answers as to why the couple split beginning to unfold with the American's words.

“Do you miss burning him with the kitchenware?” Sapphire eyes winced, and Heero pressed Cameron tightly to his chest, covering his ears. Teal eyes closed briefly, and Quatre couldn't help but think back to the bruises littering his nephew's small body.

“Do you miss the screaming and the crying as you beat him unconscious?” Wufei felt his anger rise and Quatre rubbed distractedly at his chest as Duo's voice continued to get louder.

“Do you miss cutting and hitting him with whatever the fuck was in reach, HILDE?!” Duo finally snapped, his eyes blazed as he moved to grab her by the front of her dirty shirt and pull her close to his face, “IS THAT WHAT YOU MISS?!”

Cornflower blue eyes stared back into his vacantly, the woman hung limply from his arm, her own small fists balled at her waist. She wouldn't be outdone by her ex; if he wanted to play that game then she would show him she could play it better. Her upper lip curled in distaste before melting into a smooth and cocky smile.

“Yes.”

Caught off guard by her disgusting reply, it only took a moment for Duo's anger to take root and cause him to draw his fist back in a liquid motion. Flexing his biceps, he brought his elbow forward hard.

“Duo! No!”

The American could feel the breath coming out of the smaller woman's nostrils against his knuckles and didn't miss the mocking gleam in her eyes. He berated himself for holding back and snapped at the person who'd stopped him, “Stay out of this, Wufei!”

Lifting his arm again, in a clear message, he was once again stopped, “Duo.” He actually turned to acknowledge the voice that called to him. The younger Japanese held his son securely in his lap, the little boy's face buried in his chest and his eyes closed tightly. Heero's face was pale but serious, “Not in front of Cameron.”

Those words brought reality crashing back and caused the braided man to jerk away from the woman in his hold.

Hilde bared her teeth in annoyance, “Mind your own damned business!” she hissed. Her drawn eyes widened immediately when they noticed the small bundle in the brunette's arms. Pupils dilated in anger, Hilde lurched forward, “Don't touch him!”

Reflexively clutching the child in his arms tighter to him, Heero turned in his chair to shield the boy from his mother. He felt her at his back, her hands gripping at his shirt and his hair, but apparently someone had caught her mid-flight.

Trowa grunted quietly as Hilde struggled against him furiously. He'd seen the look in her eyes and had anticipated her reaction, jumping from his seat as she'd screamed. Her elbows jarred his ribs painfully, and her heels bit at his shins, but he held on tightly, trying to pull her away from Heero.

Running over to them, Sally couldn't contain her yell, “Let him go!” she grabbed for the hands that were tugging at the dark mop of hair harshly, trying to pry the woman's fingers from Heero's dark mop without hurting him.

Quatre ran in front of Heero's crouched form, unsure of what to do while Wufei ran past him. The Chinese man, worried for his wife and his unborn child, attempted to pull the blonde away from the scene.

Heero winced harshly, but kept his eyes open, making shushing noises to try and keep Cameron calm while the others attempted to pull Hilde completely away from him. Despite this, the toddler soon began to panic, a high whine escaping his throat and his large eyes beginning to tear.

Heero was hunched forward, Cameron safely tucked under his chest, his body protecting and hiding the boy. In between calming noises he weakly offered a smile to the frightened baby, begging him not to worry with his eyes. His bottom lip trembling, Cameron swallowed his cry and buried his face in the strong chest.

Violet eyes glancing over to their son hidden beneath the Japanese, the ex-pilot made a flash decision. Stepping forward he sneered as Hilde continued to scream irrational things, and pulled back his fist to slam it against an unprotected temple. (1)

The struggle instantly ceased as the dark-eyed woman's head rocked from the blow and her fingers went lax. Within a second she'd fallen backwards, her body hitting the floor with a thud.

Hearing the crack of the punch, Heero finally closed his eyes at the sound, grateful when he felt the nails in his scalp release. Sighing, he slowly sat up and turned to see Demitri delicately lifting up the unconscious woman. Soothingly smoothing out Cameron's hair, the Japanese then turned to Duo.

The two stared in silence for a moment before the doorbell rang and there was a heavy knock at the door, causing both pairs of eyes to focus on it. Within a few seconds Demitri came back into the room with two police officers behind him. During the altercation, the older man had hurried away to phone the police station who'd know only just arrived.

The two middle-aged men only shook their heads, desensitized to the domestic violence that so-often tainted the more affluent families. The thinner of the two, bent to tap the woman whom Demitri had deposited on the couch. When she didn't respond he turned to the butler, “So you say she was violent and out of control?” His tone was bored, but his eyes were sharp, curious as to why such a large group of healthy looking people would have trouble with a single woman.

The older man nodded, turning to Wufei who stepped forward, “This is my house, officer. That woman came in unexpected and unwelcome. She started causing a disturbance and then attacked my guests.”

The police officer nodded in understanding, and turned back to the woman while his fellow officer walked over to the Chinese man. He could hear his partner ask the homeowner his name as he tapped the woman's cheek again with the back of his head. He heard the man say he was a top ranking preventer and even recognized his name as one of the ex-Gundam pilots from the AC Wars.

Making a small noise of astonishment at the realization, he waited for the dark-headed woman to open her eyes. Tapping her once more, he frowned at the large purple bruise that was beginning to form over her brow bone and cheekbone. Finally the long lashes began to flutter, and she groaned loudly, her face scrunching painfully.

Her body automatically lurched forward as her eyes squinted open, but she soon fell back against the couch with a suppressed grunt of pain.

Not wanting another scuffle, the officer immediately handcuffed the woman before she could get her bearings.

Feeling the cold metal and the hard twist of her arms going behind her back, Hilde winced, “What the hell is this?!” she said loudly, even as her head throbbed, and she began to struggle against the arms that held her.

This was all the proof the officer needed and he hauled her up from the couch. She sagged against him, her mind blacking out from the quick motion, but her years as a soldier helped her maintain consciousness. “What is going on here, officer?” she demanded, her voice gruff.

“You, ma'am are going to have to come with me. You've been charged with trespassing, assault, and disturbance of the peace. Please don't resist, it will only make it harder for you.” By now the man's partner had finished gathering information from Wufei and the others and was making his way towards the door.

Gritting her teeth, Hilde went along with the men in grudgingly. Her blue eyes were slits as she passed Heero and Duo, her nostrils flaring as she noticed the way her ex-husband stood protectively over the shorter Japanese and her son within his hold. “I'll be back,” she growled in a low voice before stiffly walking out the front door.

Once the door was shut, everyone seemed to exhale a breath they had been holding. Sally silently walked over and hugged the slightly taller Japanese man. Heero's lips tipped slightly and he rubbed her back with one hand in response, keeping Cameron close to him in his other.

Trowa was the first to speak, “How did she know where you were?” he asked, turning to Duo who had his arms folded over his chest.

The braided man thought for a moment, his hand moving up to rub the bridge of his nose, “She knew I was with you and Quatre so she must've called his office to see where he was.”

Quatre frowned, “But my secretary was only to tell people I was away on personal leave.” He watched Duo for a response, his eyes glancing over to Heero to make sure the other was all right.

“She works for a shuttle company and still has ties from the military,” Duo said, turning to face Quatre, “She must've checked for tickets you'd bought within the past few weeks and knew we'd gone to visit Wufei.”

The blonde's eyes widened at the woman's tenacity and Wufei only shook his head, muttering about `crazy onnas'. “Why would she go to so much trouble just to track you down?” the Arabian wondered aloud.

Duo sighed and went to sit on the couch, his breakfast forgotten. “That's what I don't know.” He watched as Heero quietly made his way over to him, gingerly handing him Cameron. Duo smiled at the brunette and quickly pulled his son into a tight hug, kissing the top of his head and reassuring him of his love.

Heero and the others sat around the living room in a brief silence. Finally, Sally spoke up, “Why don't we…” she paused, evidently trying to think of an activity to put everyone's mind at ease. “Go out to the park for a picnic?” she asked, her eyes lighting up.

The weary faces all lifted a little at the suggestion and everyone agreed to get ready and leave within the hour.

(1) - I do NOT condone violence against women. But you see, Hilde is not a woman, she's a she-devil that needed to be restrained. Once again, hitting women is wrong…most of the time.
