Chapter 10

--------------------

Duo walked out of the school Friday, late afternoon. The day had passed by uneventfully and Zechs, along with his group of lackeys seemed to have completely disappeared. Mrs. Une had decided to have a drama practice after school, putting everyone behind an hour and a half from they post-school plans. Most were used to her spontaneous planning, so it had come to no surprise to the drama club when a meeting was announced at lunchtime.

Reaching his car, Duo pulled out his keys of his pocket and unlocked the door. As he grasped the handle, he was knocked to the ground by a hard object in the middle of his back. Exhaling sharply, Duo braced himself with his hands as he hit the ground. Pushing up off the cement, in attempts to get up, his attempts were halted as he was kicked in the gut. Suddenly, his head was roughly jerked back.

“I told you I’d get you back. Maxwell. And this time your boss is NOT here to save you.” Zechs’ voice floated to his ears in a mocking tone.

Duo was about to spit out a sarcastic comment when he was punched in the jaw. The hard object that had hit him the first time met his arm, making him lose his balance once again Restraining the scream that wanted to come out, he tried to ignore the pain that came with them breaking his left arm. Out of the corner of his eye, Duo saw a baseball bat and held in the panic that so desperately wanted to consume him. The sigh of relief that almost left his lips when he saw the bat discarded quickly changed to a groan of pain as three people jump onto him. Every part of his body flared up in pain as they hit and kicked him. As he was about to lose consciousness, one of them stabbed him in the right arm and side, activating every nerve in the area

After a while, Duo was left lying on the ground, bleeding, exhausted and in pain. He needed to get help. He pulled himself up against his car and tried to open the door. After a few moments of struggling with the handle, he managed to open it. Reaching in, he grabbed his cell phone off the seat and paused to catch his breath while he clutched at his broken arm. Taking a deep breath to push away unconsciousness, Duo dialled Hilde’s number and prayed that she was home.

He did not have to wait long. “Hello?” Hilde’s voice washed over him.

“Hey Hil.” Duo replied hoarsely.

“Duo?! You sound awful. What’s wrong?”

“I feel awful. Could you come back to the school and call an ambulance on the way I’m beside my car.” He asked in between short breaths.

“Alright…I’ll be there in five.”

“Thanks.” He whispered. He smiled as he hung up and rested his head against the cool metal of the car. Minutes later, he heard a car pull into the lot before he lost consciousness.

Hilde jumped out of her car and ran towards her friend. She was speaking to an operator that had answered when she had called 911. “Oh God, Duo!…No, he’s not awake…Yes he is breathing…His pulse? It seems to be slow. There is blood everywhere…His left arm looks broken…And I think he has been stabled but I cannot tell. I am at St. Victoria’s High school…The north parking lot, beside a red Honda civic…Alright…Yes I’ll be waiting…The shock position?…I can do that. Thanks.” Hilde hung the phone up before repositioning herself beside Duo. She pulled her coat off before pulling him towards her to reach into the back seat of his car to retrieve the spare blanket she knew was there. Laying Duo down onto his back, she placed her coat under his head and put his book bag under his feet to elevate them slightly. Once he was positioned, she took the blanket out of the bag and draped it over her unconscious friend.

“What happened, Duo?” She asked to herself. “Who did this to you?” She leaned against the car, to wait for the ambulance and closed her eyes.

The sound of sirens approaching brought Hilde out of her pensive mood. Jumping to her feet, she ran to the middle of the parking lot and signalled to the quickly approaching paramedics.

After that, she did not notice much. She remembered the paramedics doing a check on Duo and then placing him on a stretcher before she jumped into her own car and followed them to the hospital.

When she arrived, Duo was already in the emergency room undergoing surgery. She was told to have a seat and that she would have to wait. Not being able to just sit around while Duo was in such a critical condition, Hilde got up and walked over to the pay phones. Helen needed to be notified. Dialling Duo’s home number, she prayed that his father would not answer the phone. She had heard from Duo what had happened the previous day at the Maxwell residence and she really did not want to deal with the man.

“Hello?” Helen’s voice washed over the phone.

“Mrs. Maxwell?” Hilde started.

“Why hello, Hilde, Duo’s not home yet, he called earlier saying something about a drama practice.”

“I know, he’s in the hospital. That is where I am calling. He called me about fifteen to twenty minutes ago, telling me to call 911 for him. He was in the school parking lot. You should probably come down to the hospital right away. Please hurry.” Hilde pleaded.

“I’ll be right there.”

The line went dead with Helen hanging up, and Hilde took a deep breath. Hanging up the phone in her hands, she walked back to the waiting area and sat down. She jumped up as suddenly as she had sat down however, remembering Heero. He would absolutely kill her if she didn’t get a hold of him. He would not be happy finding out from someone else. She made her way back to the phones only to realise that she did not have his number. Hitting the wall in frustration, Hilde took a calming breath and went through the list of people who would have Heero’s number Two people came to mind, Quatre and Trowa. If Quatre did not have his number then he would have Trowa’s and Trowa would definitely have Heero’s

Fishing out a quarter from her pocket, she dialled Quatre’s number and waited impatiently for someone to pick up the phone. “Come on, someone pick up.” She brushed her hand through her hair with impatience.

“Winner residence, how may I help you?”

“Hello, Mr. Winner? This is Hilde, is Quatre home?”

“Why yes he is, Hilde, just a moment.” She heard the phone being placed on a surface while Quatre’s father went to find him.

Hilde let out a sigh of relief. Shifting her weight from one foot to the other, she waited as patiently as she could for Quatre to pick up the phone. She did not have to wait too long.

“Hilde, where are you calling from? It does not show your number on the call display” Quatre asked quizzically, “You aren’t blocking your phone number again, are you?”

Hilde snorted at the reference of an old joke before getting to the point. “I’m calling from a pay phone at the hospital.”

“The hospital? Why are you there? Are you hurt?” Quatre asked quickly.

“No, no, it’s not me Quatre. Duo has been beaten up. Could you give me Trowa’s number please? I need to ask him something.” Hilde asked.

“Trowa’s number? Sure, but what does Trowa have to do with Duo being in the hospital?”

‘Everything’ she thought to herself. “Nothing to worry about, Quatre. I just need to ask him for a number.” She hated to be so evasive with him, but she could not very well tell Quatre about Heero and Duo’s relationship. Duo would be hurt beyond belief if she was to tell.

“Alright.” Quatre replied albeit a little reluctant.

Hilde hung up the phone after she had gotten the number and thanked Quatre. Searching though her pocket’s she found another quarter and put it in the phone. Dialling Trowa’s number, she waited for someone to answer the phone.

“Hello?” Asked a slightly familiar male voice.

“Is Towa there?”” Hilde asked.

“Speaking.”

“Trowa, this is Hilde, Quatre’s friend. We had lunch with you guys the other day.”

“Yes, I remember. How may I help you?”

“Do you possible have Heero’s home number? I need to get a hold of him right away.”

“Yes, I have his number, but why, might I ask, do you need the number of a person that you are not friends with?” Trowa questioned.

Hilde smacked her forehead with her hand, God, who knew she would actually have to convince him “Listen, I can’t really say but it is personal. I just really need to get a hold of him.”

There was a slight pause on the other end of the phone. “Is Duo alright?”

Hilde started, why would Trowa ask that? “Duo? What about him?”

“Do you, needing to get a hold of Heero, have to do with Duo?”

Hilde remained silent at the question.

“Ok, Hilde, I know about Heero and Duo. Heero is, after all, my best friend and just like Duo told you about them, Heero did the same. Now why are you calling my house, asking for Heero?”

“Oh,” Hilde paused, that made sense. “Duo’s been badly beaten, I don’t know by who, but I need to tell Heero. He is going to blow if he finds out through the grape vine. I may not know him personally but I have seen him lose his temper and I know that he is very protective of Duo. I’ve seen that first hand as well. Now, please his number.”

“He’s not home right now. I will give you his work number. That’s where he is, at the moment.”

“Thank you so much.” A thought struck her. “Trowa, who else knows?”

“Just me and you. Heero made me swear not to tell anyone. Quatre doesn’t even know.”

Hilde nodded to herself. “That’s good to hear.” Jotting down the number, Hilde said her thanks and goodbye. Just as she was about to get another quarter from her pocket, she head her name being called.
