Chapter 9

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Walking into his house, Duo called out. “Hello? Anyone here?”

Thumping from the second floor was heard as Solo jumped off his bed and ran toward the stairs. The eight year old came flying down them and tackled Duo.

“Hey there kiddo. How was your day?” Duo asked as he caught his brother.

“It was good. We had a spelling quiz today and I only got one wrong.” Solo declared proudly.

“Wow, that’s amazing. I’ll have to buy you an ice cream tomorrow, is that alright with you?” Duo questioned as he put Solo back down and walked towards the kitchen.

“Mommy, mommy, guess what!? Duo’s going to buy me an ice cream tomorrow. Isn’t that cool? And all because I only got one answer wrong on my quiz,” Solo exclaimed to his mother.

Helen smiled at her son before she turned her attention to Duo. “Heero’s up in your room. I didn’t know he was coming over today.”

“Yeah, he’s going to help me with math. I’m having some trouble with the class and he was so kind to offer me some help.” Duo explained.

“Oh, well that’s good to know. Don’t you have to work tonight?”

“I did, Andie gave me the day off. He said I deserved it and that I’d been working too hard.” Duo explained as he pulled out an apple from the fridge. Helen nodded as she went back to making supper.

Duo left the kitchen and made his way upstairs. On his way, he picked up his book bag off the floor where it had fallen when Solo jumped on him. Walking into his room, he found Heero seated on his bed, waiting for him.

“Close the door and take your shirt off.” Heero instructed calmly as he watched Duo walk in into the room.

Duo looked at him oddly before complying. His boyfriend was odd at times. Trying to pull off the T-shirt, Duo wondered, not for the first time, whether he was mentally stable or not. Why, in the nine hells had he worn a T-shirt today. He hadn’t realized how much it would hurt to take the bloody thing off. Moaning in pain, Duo walked towards the bed and gave Heero a pleading look. “I can’t get it off, it hurts too much.” He said softly, eyes downcast.

Heero took his cue and help Duo get out of his shirt. He gave Duo a kiss after the shirt was off, to take his mind off the pain. “All done. Shit Duo, the bruises have spread.”

Duo looked down to his chest to examine himself. Heero was right, the bruises we now up to his chest and just under his arms. No wonder he hurt so much. Duo shivered slightly as Heero ghosted his fingers down his torso.

“Lay down on your back.” Heero instructed as he pointed to the bed. Duo complied without hesitation. Heero followed suit with a small tube in his hand. Duo looked at the tube questioningly but didn’t say anything as Heero straddled his lap. “It’s salve, it will make the pain go away and decrease the bruising.” Duo nodded in understanding as he relaxed fully under Heero’s weight.

The said boy poured out some salve and began to massage Duo’s abdomen lightly. Duo winced slightly before he ignored the pain and he concentrated on the sensation his boyfriends hands were causing on his back. After a good forty-five minutes, Heero lay down beside the other boy and cradled Duo in his arms. “Better?”

Duo sighed contentedly. “Very, it’s ignorable now. You know, I really do need you to help me with Math and I need to get dressed. I don’t need Solo or Helen walking in here and seeing me in this shape. Solo already saw me this morning and I’m hoping he’s forgotten about it.”

“Alright then, up we go. We don’t need them walking in to tell us supper is read. And don’t worry we will get to your math Math.” Heero stood up and held out his hands to Duo.

Duo smiled at him as he took a hold of the proffered hands and was pulled up by Heero. Disregarding the T-shirt, on the floor, Duo walked over to his closet to find a button up. Pulling out a red and white short-sleeved shirt, Duo put it on. Once he was decent again, the two made their way down to the kitchen to see if Helen needed any help with supper.

“Hey Helen, did you need help with anything?” Duo questioned as he walked into the room.

Helen smiled at the two before turning her attention back to the food. “Well if you could, would you set the table for five?” She asked over her shoulder as she stirred something on the stove.

“Why five? There’s only four of us here?” Duo commented as he took out five plates none the less.

“Oh, did I not tell you? I must have completely forgotten. Your father is going to be home in about ten minutes.” Helen replied as she turned to face her sister’s son.

“He is? I thought he wasn’t coming home for another week or so?” Placing the plates on the table, Duo turned and Heero handed him some glasses. “Thanks.”

“Yeah, the mission he was on finished earlier than planned. He called while you were at work yesterday. It completely slipped my mind to tell you this morning. But then again I haven’t seen you all day for more then ten minutes.”

“Ah, don’t worry about it. Um, are you sure Heero should stay?” He asked her as he looked to Heero. “I mean, we didn’t exactly say good bye in the best of ways when he left. Father doesn’t seem to like Heero very much or the fact that he’s my boyfriend. If he’s going to make a big deal about it again, I’m not going to eat at the same table with him. If we don’t, then I’ll order in and we can stay in my room or got to Heero’s house,” Duo commented vehemently. There was no way he was going to kick Heero out or let his father kick the blue-eyed man out because of what his father thought.

Frank Maxwell was a good man; he loved his wife and children. He’d loved his first wife dearly as well. His only downfall was his religious ways. The man had been gone for just over six months now and to Duo, it wasn’t long enough. Six months ago, Frank left with the church missionary group to a third world country and Duo hadn’t heard from him since.

His father was the type of man who never missed a Sunday at church. He said his prayers at every meal and before bed every night. He would leave with the missionary group at the beginning of the summer and be gone for the entire season instead of spending it with his wife and children. Duo was still slightly bitter about the last one. Frank had always taught his two boys that everyone was equal, there was no boundaries to love and that they should never hate others because they were different. His father was a true blue hypocrite in Duo’s opinion. The day he’d found out Duo was going out with another boy; all of those teachings flew out the window. Duo had lost faith in his father that day and he didn’t know if he would ever be able to gain it again.

*Flashback*

“Duo,” his father called as he opened his son’s bedroom door. “Could you and Heero - What the hell is going on here! What are you two doing?!” Frank Maxwell shouted as he watched his son and supposed friend fly apart.

Duo blushed slightly as Heero looked down to the floor. “We were watching a movie dad,” Duo began to explain.

“And that is why Heero had his arms around you, which appeared to be in an intimate embrace?” His father boomed.

“Well yeah, that’s normally what people do when they are going out,” Duo replied. Heero’s head jerked up, that had been the first time Duo had admitted that they were going out to anyone other then themselves.

“Going out?! And how long has this boy been corrupting you with his ill ways?” Frank demanded.

Heero had had the decency to remain calm and not reply, even if he did feel insulted. Duo, on the other hand, was fuming inside. The longhaired boy glared at his father as he grabbed Heero’s hand. “First of all, dad,” Duo started coldly. “We have been going out for four months. Heero has done nothing but be a perfect gentleman. Tell me dad, what happened to love having no boundaries, everyone is equal and the rest of that crap that you spouted day after day? What’s the difference between some random Joe being gay and me being gay?”

“No son of mine is going to be gay! I refuse to allow it!” Frank slammed his fist against the wall.

“You refuse it, do you? Well, I hate to tell you dad but I didn’t choose to be gay either and personally, if I had the choice to be either, I would rather be gay. Heero makes me happy and that’s all that is important. If you don’t like it, tough.”

His father growled in frustration as he stomped out of the room in fury. Heero looked at Duo carefully before pulling the boy into a strong hug. “Don’t worry, it will all work out.” Heero reassured the boy in his arms.

“He’s such a hypocrite. It’s fine for others to be different but not his own son.” The sound of an engine coming to life caught their attention and the two made their way down to the front door where Helen was standing. She has this hurt expression as she watched the car drive away. “Helen?” Duo asked cautiously.

The woman who’d taken his own mother’s place, gave him a weak smile. “Your father is going with the church for six or seven months. He wasn’t due to leave for another week but apparently he couldn’t wait,” Helen explained as a lone tear fell down her cheek.

“I’m sorry, Helen; it’s my fault he left so early.” Duo stated as he walked up to her. Helen surprised him as she pulled him into a hug.

“It’s not your fault Duo. It’s your fathers for being so closed minded.” Duo pulled back in surprise. She smiled at him. “I’ve known about you and Heero for about two months now. I just kind of picked up on it one day. But what do you expect from someone that is home all of the time? Don’t worry about your father. He just needs to calm down and think things through. In the mean time, you enjoy your time with Heero.” Helen nudged her chin to where Heero was standing at the door. He had a slightly lost expression on his face as if he didn’t know what to do with himself.

Duo gave her a grateful smile before he let her go and walked up to Heero. He smiled softly at the boy before he asked him to follow him inside. Once the two were away from prying eyes, he enveloped Heero in a tight hug. He was not going to let the Oriental boy go, no matter what. To hell with what his father thought.

*End Flashback*

Heero took Duo’s hand in his own. “It will be fine. You won’t have to face him alone. This time I won’t let you.”

Duo gave the boy a warm smile, his way of saying thank you.

“I’ll deal with your father Duo. You two just enjoy your evening together,” Helen reassured the two. Since day one, she had been supportive of their relationship and by the looks of it, that support wasn’t going to change.

Just then, the front door opened and the sound of footsteps coming towards the kitchen could be heard. Duo squeezed Heero’s hand tighter as a man walked into the room the three were occupying.

Frank stood in the entrance, inspecting the three standing there. His eyes went from face to face, to the entwined hands of the two boys, to his wife once again. “Helen, it’s been a while. It’s nice to see you again,” Frank commented as he walked by his son without another glance. “I have a gift for you.”

Duo’s hand began to tremble slightly as he regained control of himself. Giving Heero a reassuring smile, he turned to Helen. “Helen, we won’t be joining you for supper. I’ll be over at Heero’s if you need me for anything. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience. I’m sure it would have been an excellent meal.” With that, the two boys made their way up to Duo’s room to grab Heero’s things along with Duo’s schoolwork. Once they had everything organized, they went back downstairs and left the house.

Once Helen was sure the two had left, she turned and glared at her husband. “You insensitive bastard.”

“Now Helen, that is uncalled for,” He was cut off, by a firm slap on his cheek.

“Don’t you dare tell me what is uncalled for!? He is your son and you treated him as if he wasn’t even alive.”

“He’s changed.” Was Frank’s vague statement.

“How would you know, you’ve been gone for six months. Any changes that has taken place has only made him a better person. If you would only take the time to understand him, you would see it. Nevertheless, I have a feeling you are just going to run away from this again like the last time. You haven’t been home five minutes and you already drove him out of the house. I hope you’re happy.” With that, Helen stalked out of the room, leaving Frank standing alone until Solo came bounding through the open door way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Are you all right? You are kind of pale.” Heero commented as he opened the front door to his house.
“Mhm, yeah I’m fine.” Duo reassured the other with a small smile.
After they were both in the entrance hall, Heero closed and locked the door before taking Duo into his arms. Turning him around, Heero placed a chaste kiss on the boy’s lips. “Don’t think about it. There is no point in worrying yourself over him. I’ll go order some pizza, why don’t you go set up your books in my room?” Heero suggested as he walked down the hall to the phone.
Duo nodded to Heero’s questioning gaze as the boy picked up the phone, before he grabbed the mentioned objects. He gave Heero another soft kiss and made his way upstairs.
The rest of the evening passed by in a relatively good atmosphere. After eating their pizza, the two started their homework. Or rather, they finished Duo’s homework; Heero had already finished his in class, this being one of the few times he didn’t have to worry about any wrong answers. Around ten thirty, Heero drove the braided boy back home.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Duo looked at Heero, his feelings freely shown in his eyes, “Thanks a lot. I really appreciate all that you’ve done tonight.” He said quietly.
“You’re very much welcome. I enjoy helping you.” Heero responded as he leaned forward, brushing his nose against Duo’s.
“Well I guess I’ll see you tomorrow at school at some point. Goodnight,” Duo commented as he gave Heero a soft kiss.
“Goodnight,” Heero said as he watched Duo get out of the car and walked into the house.
Duo watched Heero pull away before closing and locking the door. Walking down the hall, he glanced into the living room only to find Helen sitting there with the table light on. Duo cocked an eyebrow at her in curiosity; normally she was in bed by nine.
She smiled at him, “Did you get all of your work done?”
“Yeah, Heero’s a big help, I don’t know why I never asked him for help in the past. He’s like a genius in math.” Duo shifted his backpack to a more comfortable position as he took a cautious look around the empty living room. “Is dad in bed?”
“Yes, he’s been in bed for an hour or so. Don’t pay attention to him. I love the man but he can be so pigheaded at times. Your father is so stuck on his beliefs it’s not funny. Any way I’m going to bed. Get a good night sleep, Duo. Things will start to look up.” Helen stood from her position on the couch and walked over to the boy, giving him a hug before she left for her room.
Duo followed her actions shortly thereafter.
