Black and white wedding bells chap 9
Duo stared at the white ceiling of the hospital room. He had been there for three days to recover from the surgery, but to him the time spend there had felt like only minutes. His mind was on the last minutes he had seen his lover alive.
The braided Gundam pilot rolled over to his side, ignoring the stitches as they were pulled. His hart ached more then his wound did. He stared out through the window as his mind repeated the horrible moment over and over again. Duo couldn't make the memories stop repeating themselves. He closed his violet eyes as tears once again fell over his cheeks.
"Heero…" he whispered as he clutched the sheets. He buried his face into the soft pillow as he once again saw the scene in his mind.
* Flash Back *
"HHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"
Duo struggled hard against Quatre's grip. He wasn't aware of the fact that he could fall out and die if he got loose. His eyes were fixed on the burning, now collapsed, roof. He didn't hear the shouts from the blond behind him.
Quatre was pulling with al his might, but Duo was struggling to hard for him. "Wufei, I need a little help!" he shouted as he could feel his hands slip on the blood drenched cloths of the braided pilot.
Wufei was fast enough to gram a hold on Duo just as Quatre lost his hold. He yanked Duo back hard and they both landed against the other wall of the chopper. "Close the door! Were heading back! He needs a hospital!"
"NO, NO!! Heero is still there! We can't leave him!!" Duo shouted as he trashed in Wufei's arms. He knew that Heero had died, but his hart told him that he should go back to the mansion. The trashing and struggle for freedom died down as his energy left him. He turned his teary violet eyes to Wufei as he whimpered. "We must go back…"
Wufei was glad that Duo had calmed somewhat. When Duo looked at him with the big, tear drenched violet eyes, he felt that he needed to tell Duo the hurtful truth. "Duo…. Heero isn't coming back… We can't go back ether"
"Why not, Wufei?" came a chocked sob from the shot pilot.
"It's too dangerous and you need help. I promise you that while you recover, I shall go and look for him… but I need your word that you'll rest in the meantime" Wufei said as he brushed back Duo's forelocks.' When did I transform to a caring person? I wouldn't have done this during the war! Must have been when I became engaged with Treize…I feel sorry for you, Duo, I don't know what you are going through… I wish I could bring Heero back just to see you smile once more…'
Quatre tucked the blanket around Duo again. He wanted to go to the cockpit and just hug his husband. He felt so sorry for Duo. He knew that the last week had been hard on Deathscythe's pilot. First he had been kidnapped on his wedding day, the he had been (what Quatre belived) raped, shot and on top of it he had been forced to watch his lover die in a fire. Quatre didn't really know what Duo was going through, but he could guess. If it had been him and he was the one who had lost Trowa…he just couldn't think about it.
"Were almost beck at the city! Prepare to land in ten minutes!" the chopper pilot said.
"Land on top of the hospital! Trowa and Quatre are to take care of Duo while we head back to the mansion!" Wufei shouted over the noise that the chopper produced.
"Why are you heading back there, sir?! There is nothing left there that's worth going back for!"
Wufei gazed down at the man in his lap. His black eyes connected with Duo's violet ones as he smiled. "I m a man of my words"
* End Flash back*
That had been five days ago. Duo remembered that Trowa and rushed into the hospital with him in his arms. Quatre had gone ahead so there was an emergency room ready for him as he was attended to. He had begged for the blond to stay with him. He didn't want to be alone when the doctors had tried to make them leave. The couple had stayed with him until the doctors had sedated him for the operation.
When he had awaked, Quatre had been there. Duo had asked the little Arabian about Wufei's whereabouts. Quatre had told him that Wufei hadn't been heard from ever sense he had gotten to the hospital. The blond had then smiled and ruffled Duo's unbraided hair and told him not to worry about the Chinese boy. They had spend the whole day with him.
Duo opened his eyes to look at the blue sky outside the window. He hadn't heard from Quatre, Trowa of Wufei in two days and it was killing him slowly. He needed their company. He needed to be comforted, he needed… to feel Heero's embrace again. Fresh tears made their way down the path that the older tears had made on his cheek. Duo felt so alone and scared.
"Duo? Are you awake?" a soft voice asked lowly.
Duo looked over his shoulder while his body still faced the window.
In the doorway stood Quatre. The blond held a bouquet of white and red roses as he smiled. "Hi, Duo. Gomen that we haven't come and visit, but the hospital crew saw it fit that you rest" Quatre approached the bed and put the flowers in a vase that stood on the small table beside Duo's bed. "Trowa is coming tomorrow. How are you?" he asked as he drew a chair next to the bed and sat down.
Duo rolled over again, this time he winced at the sharp pain in the wound. "I m fine. The wound is healing" he said. He knew that it wasn't the wound that Quatre asked about.
Quatre looked at the bed ridden pilot as his smile dropped. "Emotionally?"
"I m broken, but I won't die because of that. Heero wouldn't have liked it if I took my own life" Duo said. "I must go on, even if it means that I have to go on without Heero. It's strange, really. During the war, the thought of Heero dying wasn't bothering me that much… I had as little chance on surviving as he did. But when he popped the question I got scared that he would die… sorry if I m confusing you…"
"Don't worry. I understand. If I was in your shoes, I would also be scared of my lover would die…" He shook the sad smile
They talked for a while, before a nurse came into the room and shooed Quatre out. Visiting time was over. Quatre didn't argue and as he stood he told Duo to rest. The blond waved at him as he disappeared through the door.
Duo smiled as the little blond left the room. No matter how depressing the situation was, Quatre always made him smile. When the long haired pilot thought about the accident that had made him depressed, his smile dropped. He turned his gaze to the window. The sky was black and stars twinkled on the big black blanket.
The nurse walked around the room and adjusted this and adjusted that before she handed the youth his painkillers. Duo grimaced at the tiny pills, but one stern look from the nurse convinced him to swallow them.
When the nurse had turned of the lights and left the room, Duo closed his eyes. He tried to think of his future, but all he saw was a thick fog. When he had Heero by his side, alive and well, the future always looked clear… but not anymore. Shaking his head, Duo cleared his mind of all thoughts. Heero had taught him that you shouldn't dwell on the past, not think of the future, but live the moment. "I shall follow you advice, lover. I promise you"
Duo dried of the fresh tears with the sleeve of his hospital shirt as he tried to gain some sleep. The painkillers helped him along the way and soon he fell into a dreamless sleep.

Duo's eyes snapped open at the tiny sound from the door. After have been in war for many years, he had develop a alertness that made him react at the tiniest of sounds. He didn't move or change his breathing as he listened after more sounds.
The intruder tried to be silent, but Duo could still hear him as he neared the bed. `Accordingly to the sound of the footsteps, man. Not tall and well trained. Probably workouts in the weekends' Duo thought. He tried to remember a man who wasn't very tall and well trained. He could think of one, but he was dead.
The footsteps got closer to the bed and Duo made himself ready to fight. If the man would do anything that meant to harm him, Duo would knock him flat on his ass, wounded or not!
A hand clamped over his mouth in the dark. Duo started to struggle hard. `Damn! I didn't know that he was so close! He must be in the spy business!' Duo tried to grab the string for the lamp at his side, but his attacker prevented that. it didn't take long before Duo felt his body energy was leaving him. `The painkillers! They are making me sluggish!' Duo tried to push the man off him, but soon had to give in to the drugs in his system.
Ten minutes passed before the attacker noticed that Duo wasn't going to fight him any more. The attacker bent down close to Duo's face, the braided pilot could feel this, and he reached out his hand and pulled the string that he had stopped Duo from pulling ten minutes ago.
When the light filled the room, Duo's hart stopped beating. Before him, sitting on his stomach, sat….
… Enjou….
"Hello, angel…"
