CH 12: Escape

I paced around the room. It was senseless to try and sleep. My mind kept filling with Yuy, the sound of his voice, the feel of him causing a stirring in my lower half, until I recalled the detached cruelty of his blatant admission.

The wordless scream left me. I was frustrated, insanely so, in every way. Restlessly exhausted. I needed to get the hell out of this place or get some drugs to put me down. I was tired of thinking. I went to the door banging on it forced to deal with Melissa.

“Um, do you need something Mr. Maxwell?” She asked opening the door.

“Give me something to knock me out or I'm leaving this shit hole.” I demanded the niceties dropped. I was in a foul mood.

“I'm sorry Mr. Maxwell.” My hate fell on Melissa. She was digging her own grave. “Since you had so many drugs in your system when you were brought in we can't give you anything and the Preventer's said you can't leave.”

I could have just left. I knew that, but something inside of me snapped. My hand reached out taking hold of her by the neck squeezing with enough pressure to let her know I could do more than a little damage if I so chose. Her distressed appearance alerted me that I could be extremely terrifying when enraged.

“I'm not asking you what you can or can't do you worthless fuckin cow. I'm telling you to take your mentally inept ass down the fuckin hall and get me something so that I don't have to look at your fuckin brain-dead face for another god damn second! You get me ya fuckin useless woman.” I spat with disdain. Pushing her back by her neck as I released her with enough force to send her to the ground below me looking down on her like the monster I was.

She scampered away from me the tears already running from her eyes, which only aided in increasing my anger. I gnashed the back of my teeth together. Every second it increased this uncontrollable rage. I knew it was partly caused by Yuy and my exchange, along with everything else that happened, but it was rapidly growing out of control for reasons I couldn't explain. The wrath was overwhelming me causing every muscle in my body to contract desperately wanting to unleash the vile loathing onto something that could scream. It felt like the anger was suffocating me, that nothing would tame it.

“Mr. Maxwell.” The biting tone found me. I spun in all my fury on the strong woman. Amy didn't flinch in the least flanked by two Preventer's. “You will not be receiving any medication tonight. You will stay in this room and you will sleep. If you decide to man handle any more of my staff your stay here will not be an enjoyable one.”

“Nothing in this fuckin place is enjoyable.” I spat no longer looking at her but to the Preventer on her left. Yuy wasn't lying. Young and I shared a glare. He was looking good, despite Joey and Yoshi's beating. Of course those Heal Boosts were something amazing. Young's hand went to his side and I was 100% sure it was where his gun resided.

“Mr. Maxwell. Return to your bed. You are ordered to stay here for the night to be monitored.” Amy's words didn't reach me.

“You think you can get that gun out and a shot before I snap your fuckin neck Young?” Ferociousness fueled me. Young tired to school the panic he felt, but he already made the mistake in showing his fear. He had seen first hand what I was capable of and seemed to reason that he was no match for me.

Young didn't attempt to answer. Lucky for him his counterpart took my attention with his less then subtle movement. The phone was no sooner to his ear then my fist crushed into his face instantly breaking his nose. Amy lost her cool and stumbled away from the violence into the room with a yelp. Young had the gun out pointed at me. I turned to it as the other Preventer fell like a lifeless lump to the floor unconscious. I stepped to Young pushing my head against the barrel watching his whole body tremble as he stared into my eyes.

“You should pull the trigger Young.” No life found my words. The room fell silent making the shaky cries from Amy that much louder.

“Pull the trigger Young. You don't want to leave your poor hapless mother alone do you?” Young swallowed hard the sweat pouring off him. He still unable to decide.

“You're not even worth the effort.” The heartless laugh left me as I pushed by him.

“I won't fail!” Young yelled as a pain burned along my right bicep. I paused in step glancing to the pained area seeing red spill from the deep graze the bullet left. A few centimeters inward and I would have had a hole in my arm. It wasn't quiet hurting yet, just numb. Blood spilled from it craving the outside world.

My breath was slow, the moment taking its time to pass, more of the liquid forming rivulets that ran down my arm dripping from my fingers. My eyes trailed from the wound to the wall in front of me. People were running by, screaming, unsure of what had happened I heard nothing but my breathing. A smooth calming sound, an emotion I was beyond comprehending.

I slowly turned around to face the one who had so cowardly shot me from behind. Young was covered in horror, partly from actually shooting me I'm sure, but most of it was from facing me. Facing the Duo Maxwell the guys only read about. The Duo Maxwell that derived a sick pleasure from battle. The one who's blood lust could never be sated. The one that was devoured by wrath only to become that insidious sin.

Stalking towards the quivering boy, nurses and doctors speeding past me. The alarm echoing in the building. Young was struck still by his fear. Why Yuy and Chang thought this pup could stop me made no sense. He was too green. Perhaps the two thought I wouldn't hurt him. They were terribly mistaken.

I crouched down in front of Young and gripped him with both hands by the neck, shoving my thumbs into the underside of his jaw as I squeezed mercilessly. His hands gripped my wrists out of an instinctual will to live.

“The head or heart Young.” I said in a frighteningly calm voice as my grip tightened, Young gasping for air as the color of his face changed in his strangulation.

Tears ran from his eyes as his mouth uselessly fought for air. His eyes beginning to glaze over. Amy was screaming in the room, screaming for me to stop, but too afraid to approach me. I let go of Young, he greedily pulled in air, too much for his confused lungs causing him to cough and sputter on the ground.

“Next time you hesitate I will kill you.” I stood from his unsettled form. He should be unnerved. I meant it. Most people's lives didn't hold much value to me. Another of the many contradictions that made me. Never wanting others to feel the pain I had, but so easily able to take a life without a shred of remorse. I hated being sober, it caused me to think too much.

I left the ward heading down the stairs mixing into the wave of rushing staff and patients. Four more Preventer's were stationed at the main entrance/exit of the hospital. I crouched down in the rush of panic, the four scanning over the flowing mass. It was a gamble since the group was starting to taper off, giving me no time to plan before I would miss my opportunity.

It seemed karma was finally on my side for once as I made it outside. The night air was crisp seeming to calm my earlier raging. Must have been stir crazy. I never really liked being forced to stay anywhere. I walked through the throngs of people to the few stragglers in the back. My eyes looking to the feet of the few on the outskirts.

I found what I was looking for and without a moments hesitation my fist crashed into the face of the unsuspecting man jabbering on his cell phone. The only thing I knew was he had black hair, was part of the staff, and he had feet about my size. The unexpected hit was enough to lay him out. He held onto consciousness, but was left groaning and rolling on the ground, the worried shouts coming from the phone dislodged from his hand at my attack. I wasted no time in stealing his shoes. The ground was kind of cold and I wasn't about to walk L2 streets barefoot.

The sneakers fit perfectly and were comfortable, double bonus. I left the staff member on the ground hearing the sirens in the background knowing my time was short before Debby Downer and Karla Killjoy arrived, Chang and Yuy respectively.

I ran across the grounds hopping the small wired fence that surrounded it. I wasn't sure why the fence was there, maybe to keep out dogs or something. It was kind of an eyesore, but they requested it as I recalled. The train station was only a few blocks away and I wasted no time running there. Chang and Yuy would know I left, if anything Young would have called them by now.

I came to a sliding stop in front of the station going to the bike rack lucky some dumbass didn't lock up their bike. I would have taken the train, but I was sure Preventer's would be stationed at all the stops.

There was a reason the bike was left unlocked. It was old, rusted and crappy with an even crappier basket on the front that I was sure if I breathed on would crumble. Hell if I sneezed on the bike I was sure the whole thing would collapse on itself, but beggars can't be choosers so it was mine.

Amazingly the rickety thing held together as I started on my way. I was on the complete opposite side of town from my apartment, which totally sucked since I had no money and/or other mode of transportation. It took an hour and a half to get to the other side of town by train. By bike it was going to be even longer, not to mention the Preventer's would be out looking for my ass.

The city was still pretty active, it was a Friday night and all, the club kids out in force. It helped in making my escape a bit easier, though I still kept to back roads as much as possible. There was no doubt in my mind I was going to get caught, it was an inevitability. There were a lot more Preventer's than me and they had a lot more options at their disposal. I was on a crappy bike with a long ass way to go. If only I had some cash or a damn cell phone.

The anger coated my face as I recalled the man I'd downed for shoes had a cell phone that I could have easily gotten, but no, I was too focused on getting shoes to think of it. Damn me and my one focus mind. Guess the guys were right, can't handle a two front battle, one mission at a time.

The snort of irritation left me at the knowledge a pay phone was out of the question. The worst thing I could do is stay in one place. A moving target was much harder to acquisition than a stationary one.

I picked up some speed on the bike, it was sounding like Deathsythe after a battle gone wrong. That usually meant I had about 20 minutes before he crapped out on me, I hoped the bike lasted longer.

The alley I was taking was blocked by a delivery truck, damn assclown couldn't figure out how to park so just took up the whole thing. I growled as I turned onto a main street nearly crashing into a few drunken walkers who were kind enough to give me a yell and a finger gesture. I paid no mind to them knowing I stuck out like a sore thumb in my hospital wear on a bike, granted it wouldn't have been much better walking, plus I'd be moving slower.

I took the next street I could and quickly back tracked turning to the main road not bothering with the sidewalk standing on the bike peddling hard as the sirens came to life on the Preventers van that had spotted me.

“Fuck.” I snapped biting my lip, sweat dripping off me at my fevered movements. The only good thing about a bike, I had a lot more agility.

I weaved onto the sidewalk, the wheels screeching to a stop as I picked the bike up turning it around and peddled my ass off in the opposite direction turning down another side street, to see another Preventer's vehicle.

God damn it wasn't my night, I veered around it and turned down an alley, then took another turn on the next street, crossed the main road I'd so recently been on, hearing horns blare and cars coming to a screeching stop with a few collisions. Again, I turned down another side street and more alleys continuing in that ever changing weave as I headed through the city.

I managed to lose my pursuers through the accidents I had caused and my erratic directional headings. The bike slowed as I felt like I was going to die from all the stimulation.

Lights shined from behind me without thought I picked up my pace assuming it had to be a Preventer, like no one else ever drove down an alley. I turned on the connecting street glancing over my left shoulder, if it was a Preventer it wouldn't be long until he came out of that alley. The sick part of me wanted to know if it was as I kept the speed up just in case.

The car still hadn't come, false alarm. I returned my view in front of me where it should have been the entire time.

“Oh shit.” I got out seeing nothing but black in front of me. I was on the street close to the sidewalk, there was no way the driver would have seen me. This was totally my bad. I was going fast enough the bike was going to be thrashed. Damn.

The world of physics came to me, namely Newton's Law. The bike had already been acted upon by another force, but I was an object in motion and staying in motion. I caught some air as the back of the bike vaulted me upward, the front wheel coming to an instant stop as it connected with the car. The world was turned upside down and I got to see it was a pickup truck that had been behind me in the alley. I had a nice view of the star lit L2 sky the moon huge and full in the distance. It was cut short as my legs connected with the hood of the car and I was flung downwards. I brought my hands up, my inertia keeping me moving at a fast pace over the side of the hood. My arms nailed the wheel well and wheel itself blocking my face from it.

Of course that hit set a whole new group of variants in motion as my legs were still trying to move forward. I had enough propulsion behind me that my head didn't hit the ground as my legs came off the hood and over my head. Gravity took hold and my back hit the ground along with my legs and I finally came to a sliding stop.

The coughing breath left me as I assessed the damage and there was some damage, but nothing too detrimental. Organs were functioning and I had all my limbs. The wheel well had made some nice gashes on the underside of my forearms; I could already feel the warmth of my life running down them. Fuckin karma turning on my ass again. Gives me something just to completely crush it all a second later.

“Oh my god! You hit someone!” The high pitched panic found me. The windows must have been down; it was a pretty nice night.

“Whoa, dude caught some major air, ha!HSHa! Damn! Man he's lookin rough as hell too.” A deeper voice added, seeming more entertained then panicked. Car doors opened. I didn't have time for this shit.

“Fuck.” I shot up to a sitting position hearing a few gasps behind me.

“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” The voice was male, but highly effeminate. There was no doubt in my mind he was gay. I didn't pay any attention to his hovering form.

“Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.” I grunted trying to make sure I really was alright. That was one problem from being a Gundam pilot, got so used to pain; sometimes it was hard to tell if it was there at all.

Enough distractions, it was time to get a move on. I pushed myself off the ground rising tenderly to my feet. There were a few winces of pain, oh man was I gonna be hurting tomorrow.

“Don't get up! What if you're bleeding internally?” The other with me wailed.

“He just hit the car, not the car hittin him, though dude was goin pretty fast…” The man seemed even more entertained as he explained the chain of events to his counterpart.

I gave a coughing laugh. Seriously, was on a bike. Yeah you can get some speed, but internal injuries? I wasn't some weakling.

I turned to the car. There were two others standing outside the car. The passenger and the other backseat rider was out behind the driver. The drive themselves wasn't out, I was sure they were probably in shock. Hitting someone wasn't such a good thing.

“Kai call an ambulance!” The shriek sounded next to me.

The backseat rider, who responded to Kai, pulled out his phone. There was a streetlight just above the car casting a dim glow over us. I couldn't make out too many distinguishing features on him, but he reminded me of Cliff. Course that wasn't at all a good comparison as the only reason being he had blond hair. He was like Cliff if he was a reasonable sized guy.

“No.” I snapped causing Kai to look at me and drop the phone from his ear. “I'm fine alright. Names Duo Maxwell, just send me the bill for the car and I'll pay whatever.”

“Duo Maxwell huh? Well Duo, yer the victim here man, we're in a car and you were on a bike ya know. The Preventer's cameras caught all that shit anyway man.” The man standing in front of the passenger side door said, still completely amused by the situation. His hair was up in a mohawk, tattoos were in sleeves on his arms. He looked like a punk, even had a hoop in his lip, nose and on both his eyebrows.

“Just send me the bill and don't tell anyone you saw me.” Firmness to my voice. I moved to leave and felt the arms cling to mine.

“The Duo Maxwell.” The voice next to me purred. “I'm your biggest fan.”

I glanced down and was struck silent at what I saw. It was like a miniature version of myself. What the hell do you say to that? He even had contacts in to replicate my violet eyes. I wasn't sure how many times he died his hair, but it was nearly a perfect match. The only difference in appearance was he was smaller and wearing much tighter and more provocative clothing then I would.

“I love you.” He cooed up to me.

“Uh, that's nice.” That's all I could say to the oddity that was clinging to me. With his short leather shorts, fishnets covering his legs and boots that came to his knees. The only reason I noticed was he wrapped a leg around me.

“Steven, let him go.” Kai had come to us and was grabbing my smaller double off of me. He really did look kind of like Cliff or maybe Jaster in a few years if he stopped getting more muscle. He had that baby face and deep blue eyes.

“No!” Steven pouted grabbing me tighter and leaning more of his weight on me causing me to wince in pain at my ruined bodies protest.

“You're hurting him.”

Steven was off me in a second. “Oh my god! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!”

“Naw, its fine.” Fuck I was doing exactly what I didn't want to be, standing still and in the open like a perfect target. “Just send me the bill aright, I gotta get moving.”

I turned away ready to hoof it home when the hand grabbed my arm. “The least we can do is help you some how. Do you need a ride or do you want to use my phone?”

Kai was a more intelligent version of Cliff as well. Maybe I'd have to introduce Charlie to him, though he seemed to already be something with the imitation of me. The hand of Kai's that wasn't holding me was pressed lightly on Steven's exposed stomach from the small leather tank top he wore as his back was pressed tightly to Kai's front. Those fake violet eyes staring awe struck up at me. Yes it was making me more than a little uncomfortable. I'm sure Steven was just trying to find new ways to emulate me, but it was terrifying, completely so.

“Yeah, yeah, a phone would be awesome.” If I could get hold of one of the guys I could get them to come get me, granted they'd all probably be drunk. Cliff wouldn't though.

Kai handed me his phone and I dialed Charlie's home number. There was no answer. I didn't bother leaving a message. Shit, needed another plan. Call Charlie and make him go home and get Cliff's ass up to get me. Yes. Thank god I knew Charlie's cell phone number by heart. Course his home and cell numbers were the only two numbers I knew period, so if he didn't answer it was back to square one. I could have taken a ride with these guys, but I didn't figure it wasn't too good an idea. I didn't want to drag more people in to my mess.

The phone was on its fourth ring and I recalled Charlie never answered his phone unless he knew the number. Fucker better check his damn messages. The fifth ring started and I was getting impatient, also having the three outside the car staring unblinkingly was starting to freak me out.

There was a ruckus on the other end. “Just let me answer it.”

“That's what voicemail's for Cliff and your driving, you can't do two things at once!” Charlie was yelling.

“I can too! How do you turn it on?” Cliff sounded as if he was talking in the phone already.

“It's already on Cliff. You talk now.” I could totally picture Charlie rolling his eyes at his larger companion.

“Oooooh.” There was a pause again. “Hello, Charlie's phone.”

“You're such an idiot.” Charlie muttered in the background. I immediately forgot all about the people around me. For some reason feeling like I had to move around, beginning to pace as I spoke.

“Aw, Cliff you have no idea how good it is to hear your voice man.”

“Duo, that you?”

“Is it Duo? Give me the damn phone!” Again there was a ruckus.

“You said you didn't want to answer it! I'm talking now.”

“God damn it Cliff I will kill you. Give me the damn phone!”

“Fine!” Cliff was a pushover despite his size, especially when it came to Charlie.

“Where the hell are you?!”

“Don't fuckin yell at me!” I snapped. He had that effect on me.

“I'm not yelling yet!”

“Oh you have tone!”

“You'll know when I have tone.”

“I do know and you're giving me tone right now!” Yeah Charlie and I didn't always focus so well.

“Whatever, now where are you?” He seemed to have calmed down as well as I.

“Uh, somewhere in the city.” I said stopping my walking and glancing around the area not knowing it at all.

“My god you are a plethora of useful information.”

“Well, I was running form the Preventer's. Sorry I didn't keep track of where I was going assbag.” I snorted starting my pacing again.

“Yeah I know.”

“How do you know?”

“Chang called me and told me you left the hospital and to contact him if I heard anything from you.”

“You gonna call him then?” It wasn't that I didn't trust Charlie, I just didn't trust anyone.

“Fuckin stupid. Of course I'm not! Cliff and I went out looking for you. So where the hell are you?”

“I told you I don't know where the fuck I am and no yer fuckin stupid!”

“Oh you're on…” Steven was cut off as the passenger yelled to me.

“Eh, yer on Lawrence, just east of Ashland!”

“Shut up Black! I was telling him!”

“Aw, did I make ya mad wittwe steveweavey?”

“Shut up Black!”

“Are you with someone Duo?” Charlie asked.

“Heh, it's a long story. How long till you get here?”

“We're south on Diversy, Cliff's gotta turn around and we'll be there in less than two minutes.”

“Right on, hurry up man, I've been here a minute.”

“Just shut up and stay there. We'll be coming up Western.”

“Got it.” I hung up the phone handing it to Kai. “Thanks man.”

“No problem, least we can do after hitting the most notorious celebrity in the ESUN.”

“Yeah, thanks.” I hated being called a celebrity.

Charlie was most likely going to freak out when he saw me. Blood coated both my inner arms, and outer on the right, not to mention my disheveled look. The wounds on my inner arms were still bleeding, but not as heavily. The right bicep had pretty much stopped.

“Hey you guys got any water by chance?”

“Yeah, I got a bottle man.” Black said ducking into the car.

“Thanks for everything.” I nodded to Kai and Steven.

“No problem.” Kai said while Steven just looked speechlessly up at me eyes full of adoration and joy. The two followed me back to the car. Kai placing the over elated Steven back into it.

Black handed me the water and I went to the front of the car pulling off my shirt. I heard Steven squealing in the back and did my best to ignore it as I crouched in front of the car getting some better light on the wounds in my forearms. They weren't as deep as the bullet wound, but deep enough a few stitches probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I could deal with that when I got home.

“It okay if I use all this?” I asked peaking my head up from the front of the car.

“Oh yeah, it's no prob. man.” Black said with a smile.

“Thanks.” I returned to the business at hand, noting the car was a BMW, nice. I dumped the water on my arms washing off the blood that had dripped down them and drying it with my crumpled shirt. I tore off a few pieces from the bottom half of the shirt that weren't stained. I wrapped the pieces around the affected areas tying them with my teeth. I made sure each one was long enough to wrap around the wounds a few times so they wouldn't bleed through that quick.

There was a bit left in the water bottle. I handed it back to Black who gave me a nod.

“Looks good man. Can't really tell, plus ya ain't bad to look at either.” He gave me a wink. Apparently everyone in the car was gay.

“Shit yeah.” I was cocky. “Seriously though, thanks for aiding and abetting a criminal.”

“All in a days work man, shit you an L2 punk, gotta help out my peeps right? Fuck the Preventer's.” Black gave me an approving nod and a knowing smirk.

“Hell yeah.” The vile snarl on my face. Fuckers were nothing but trouble for me. Granted I might be causing most the trouble, but that really wasn't the point.

“Better go meet your friend's man. Maybe we'll see ya around sometime.”

“Yeah. You guys should head to O'Brien's, it's on the northwest side. I'm always hangin at that joint. I can buy ya guys some drinks and shit.”

“Ha, yeah we're the ones that need to be buyin you the drinks there bro, but you got it man. Catch ya later then.” Black said before slipping back in the car.

I moved around the front of it heading towards Western, which was the next cross street east. The aching was already starting to increase slowing my movements.

The car came around the corner and stopped a few feet in front of me. My arm came up to shield my eyes from the bright light. What if it wasn't Charlie? What if it was a Preventer? I was going to be fucked is what.
