Burial Applicant

Chang Wu Fei looked up from his desk in Preventer Headquarters as there was a polite knock on his office door. No one really had time to knock here, unless they came to give you bad news.

Setting his pen down, he stood up and called out “It's open.” Gut instinct told him that he did not want to be sitting down when he heard the news.

A tall lanky man came into his office smiling without showing his teeth. It was betrayed, however, with the tightening around the eyes. Yes, bad news was in store. Wu Fei stayed standing as he motioned for the man to sit. He looked normal, except that he had no gun on him. He must have been a civilian.

The man made a little `aheming' sounding in the back of his throat before he got started. “Mr. Chang.” He said with that smile still on his face. “Have you heard of the recently discovered `vampires?'”(1) He'd put extra emphasis on the street term for the mutation of the DNA.

This introduction got Wu Fei to raise an eyebrow, his usually impassive face lighting up with rare hints of emotion. “In passing.” He confessed in a monotone. “And your name would be?”

The man looked sheepish for a moment, and Wu Fei could tell by his movements that it was not a forced reaction. “Pardon me,” He said. “My name is Dr. Samuel Raugust. I am the leading expert in what people have come to refer as `Vampires.'”

He smiled that smile again, stretching his pale skin so that it almost looked translucent under the harsh light of the office. Wu Fei blinked slowly. “Your point being?” And then he added as an after thought. “Sir?” He had a lot of work to do, and conversation that danced in circles was not something he had time for.

The man gave a low sigh as he ran his fingers through cropped sandy brown hair. “To tell you the truth Agent Chang, I was called here today because some of your fellow agents were concerned for you. Some of them think that you might be infected.” The doctor turned his brown eyes up at Wu Fei and gave him a placid smile.

Wu Fei had gone still after that statement. Pegging the loathsome creatures that could have called this man. Then, as if a freight train hit him, the full implications of that statement was processed and Wu Fei had to sit down. The doctor played with a pen that he'd acquired from his pocket as he allowed Wu Fei to gather himself. Wu Fei himself was silently grateful for that fact, he would not want any of the other agents in here just then.

“Alright.” He said slowly to the doctor. “What do I have to do to make sure I do not get infected?” He saw the way those who were openly `Vampires' get treated by the rest of the population, and he did not want that. He already stood out among his peers because of his age and skill, and they didn't even know he was a Gundam Pilot. It would be even worse if they new that he was a Vampire.

The doctor nodded his head and scooted up in his chair. “First I am just simply going to ask you some questions.” He gave Wu Fei a look. “And you have to answer them truthfully, leaving nothing out or else I might misdiagnose you, understand?”

Wu Fei's first instinct was to refuse. But as he thought about it, he nodded slowly. The doctor smiled a genuine smile this time and then readied his pen on a pad of paper. “When was the last time you ate?” Dr. Raugust asked in a no nonsense voice.

The question through Wu Fei off for a moment and he had to actually think about when the last time he ate was. As he kept thinking though, he grew more and more alarmed. His mask was still impenetrable, unchanged, but something must've of given him away because the doctor's mouth tightened in a line. “Just tell me the date you last remember eating a meal.” Dr. Raugust amended. Wu Fei nodded and gave a deep sigh out of his nose. “Two weeks ago yesterday.” He grunted, hating the way it sounded. The doctor nodded and made a note down on his paper. “And are you hungry?” the older man asked, still looking at his paper.

Wu Fei ad to stop himself from shaking his head. “No.” He stated simply. “I have no desire for food.” He remembered this morning when he'd made himself some rice and had looked at it after he'd made it and had wanted to puke.

Dr. Raugust nodded his head and made more notes. “Last question, Who was the last person you had intimate relations with?” Brown eyes met almost black as the doctor asked this, daring him to flinch.

Wu Fei wanted to bristle and demand to know why he would need to know that. The older man, as if reading his mind, raised a hand to calm Wu Fei. “The reason why I ask if because in most cases of Vampirism, it was spread like an STD would be; and if I already have your partner on my list of known carriers, I can say for sure if you're going to be a Vampire or not.”

Wu Fei nodded tightly. “I am still a virgin.” His voice was tight and defensive, daring the man a crossed from him to laugh or make judgment. Twenty years old and still a virgin. Dr. Raugust however was cool and professional and didn't even blink when Wu Fei said this. Instead, the older man simply nodded. “Then have you shared blood with anyone?” He tried, twirling his pen in his hand.

Wu Fei had to think back to his time in the war. “Yes…” He thought out loud. “I did share blood with one person.” He went into thought on that night. Duo had just gotten back from a mission and was loosing a lot of blood. Wu Fei had been the only other one at the safe house. He didn't know if his blood would be rejected by Duo's body so he'd transferred some of the braided man's blood into his own system before giving any to Duo. It had worked.

Dr. Raugust nodded his head. “Name?” He asked. Wu Fei sighed and took off hi glasses to rub his nose. “Duo Maxwell.”

The doctor's pen fell on the floor with a loud click. Wu Fei's head shot up and his hand automatically found its way to his gun. The older man looked at the agent sheepishly and bent over to pick up his writing utensil. “Duo Maxwell you said?” Dr. Raugust sighed softly. “We better get down to the medical wing quickly then.”

Wu Fei was left a little floundered as the doctor got up and was heading for the door. Realizing that he was going to get left behind, the ex-gundam pilot got up quickly and followed the older man out of the door and towards the medic unit. They didn't talk as they dodged hurrying agents and wound their way though the building. Wu Fei had to give the guy credit, he didn't make a wrong turn once.

Once in side one of the empty rooms, Dr. Raugust closed the door behind them both. “Please take off our jacket. I need to take a blood sample.”

Wu Fei decided not to argue and took off the denim Preventer's jacket. Setting on the cot, he watched as the older man prepared a beaker of some white chemical before opening up a syringe. He then proceeded to take some of Wu Fei's blood. He didn't take much, not even half a syringe full. As Wu Fei applied pressure to the slight hole, he watched the doctor put the blood into the beaker. In a matter of seconds, the liquid was black and bubbling.

Wu Fei watched in horrified fascination. He didn't think anyone's blood would do that, no matter what the chemical was. After it was done bubbling, Dr. Raugust sealed the beaker, labeled it then slid it back into his pocket. When he turned to face the agent, his face was set in a grim line. “You're a vampire Chang Wu Fei, and I apologize to say this, but on your way to becoming a `Freshie.'” (2)

(1)Vampires, in this story are not like Dracula or even Alucard. They are going to be more like Ultraviolet. There are some aspects of these Vampires that I am going to have to tell you in the story for they are important to the plot. Be patient with me please, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

(2)Freshie, refers to a Vampire with particular feeding habits. Yes, Vampires in this story are going to be drinking blood. A Freshie is a vampire who drinks fresh blood, straight from a human. The other term is `Bagged' for a vampire who can survive off of blood that has been bagged. They can also eat regular food.

Please guys, tell me what you think. Depending on how many reviews I get I will continue this story.
