Chapter #8: The Boys learn to dance
The next morning the gang returned to school like nothing happened. They trusted their hiding place, of course no one found it in over a decade, and no one would find it now. The limestone cave walls were too thick to use radar, sonar was useless because of the echo, infrared wouldn't work too, in the cave by night the temperature was so cold you had to wear a jacket at least.
Current the class was having some free time because for once, the girls didn't argue with the teacher, and the work in the class was done in nanoseconds. Ashley seeing as to Heero wasn't doing anything in particular stood up and moved to sit by him, "Hi Heero… I want to ask, if you don't have any plans… would you take me to the dance Friday?" she asked coyly Heero didn't bother to reply. "Ashley bug off, leave him alone," Mandy told her. The ebony haired girl flipped her hair over her shoulder; her eye was still dark from her previous encounter with Mandy.
"Mandy, even if I went to the dance, it wouldn't be with her," Heero finally spoke. Ashley's eyes widened, "How… who then Heero?" she asked, still scooting closer to him. Heero put his foot on the plank running between the chair's legs and pushed Ashley away, chair and all, causing it to squeak, "Not you that's for sure, personally I'd take Mandy over you any day," he replied. Ashley stared, but then began to laugh, "Heero you are hilarious!" she said between chuckles. Mandy was blushing, she didn't expect something like that from Heero. Heero had a tint of pink too on his cheeks, he couldn't believe he just said that, he could already hear Duo's teasing, and the baka was still floating around on his private cloud nine.
Finally he snapped out of it, "Ashley, I mean it, now get lost… I can put a matching black eye on you, and I wont be as gentle as Mandy was," he said. Ashley spluttered and scooted away faster then someone ever saw her move. "Way to go Heero you sly dog, I knew you- Eep! Ack!" Duo didn't get to finish because Heero yanked on his braid hard. "That was mean Heero," Katie said. "No kidding," Duo grumbled.
The bell rang to signal the end of the day and the class moved home, Katie once again went to the gang's home, her parents thought it was good she had some friends so they didn't mind, they knew that one of the girls would drive her home, after all she lived only about a mile away. As soon as they got home, the guys went up to their attic to change the girls did the same. Katie waited for them in the living room.
As soon as the gang came down Jessica went to the phone, "Yo people, toppings? I'm ordering pizza!" she said. "Pepperoni! Make sure they put on a lot of it!" Duo chimed. "Cheese! Hey get that stuffed crust one," Sage said. "Can we have green peppers on it?" Amber wondered. The guys, with Duo being the exception, remained quiet, they didn't have much of a picky choice about food, and they always ate whatever rolled along their way.
"So when is the dance?" Duo asked, he was excited to go clubbing, especially if it meant seeing Heero and Mandy, he had a bet with Jessica that they would get together, while Jessica said Heero wouldn't go as to that far. Jessica checked her schedule, "Friday," she said after a second. "This Friday? As in two days?" Duo asked. Jessica nodded, "Sweet!" Duo chimed. "Mandy I envy you," Katie said. Heero was watching all of this, he still couldn't believe he said what he said to Ashley, but he couldn't take it back. He knew that he would hurt Mandy's feelings if he did, and he didn't want to do that, 'I guess a dance cant be bad, it could be worse' he thought deciding to go with Mandy to the dance.
The doorbell rang and Jessica went to get the pizza, she walked back into the living room where Duo immediately looked up at her, he looked like a homing missile locked on target, his eyes just shone 'Pizza… NOW!' she set the box on the table and the gang grabbed whatever they could before Duo would eat it all.
---Friday, day of the dance---
The girls were overjoyed, the guys, all but Wufei, decided to go to the dance with them, much after Duo's pestering but they decided to go. The girls totally shocked the guys when they got them something 'special' to wear for the occasion.
Katie and Mandy were standing, ready and waiting for the guys. Katie had on a form fitting pants that accented her curves, her shoes were simple, and she wore them so she could dance just a little longer. On top she had a sparkling top, the sleeves and bottom looked like they were torn, but really that was what they were made to look like, the sparkles were in shades of deep blue. Her hair was tied into a ponytail from which two small braids split.
Heero was first to come down the steps, Mandy got him something stylish, he had on blue baggy jeans and sport shoes, with a blue/black button down shirt with an image of a samurai on it. His hair was combed a bit, but it was still messy and unruly and it refused to stay put, all around he looked like any other guy in school, except classier.
Mandy stepped closer to him, "Heero," she said, reaching up she unbuttoned his shirt, underneath he had on a black tee, "There, now it's right, don't button it up, and to finish it…" she pulled out a pair of blue mirror-coat shades, "Put these on," she handed them to Heero. The teen put them on, "Ashley will lose a fuse with you dressed like that," Mandy told him. Heero smiled lightly, he liked the idea of ticking off that girl, and there he made up his mind to dance only exclusively with Mandy to make her even madder.
He looked over Mandy, she wore nothing too grand, she had on black platforms and black bellbottom pants, for a top she wore what appeared to be a black tank top with a slogan on it that proclaimed, 'I'm no Angel' it had a burning halo above the letters. On top of that she had a black leather jacket, her hair was swept up into a high ponytail, her bangs curled just a bit, he hated to admit it to himself, but the girl looked stunning.
Jessica made her way down the steps from her room; the girl was dressed to kill. She had on tight black latex pants with platform shoes, a loose belt around her waist that hung down one hip, a black tee with fire on it, a latex jacket with some studs on the rims of the sleeves and bottom, and topped it off with a black cowboy wide-rim hat. Her long fiery auburn hair was braided, and it hung over her shoulder. "Damn Heero… looking sharp," she said. Heero grinned slightly.
The other girls appeared, Amber wore all white, she had on white tennis shoes, with white flares that hugged her thighs and hips, on top she had a halter top that was covered with sparkling fur, on her hand she had the most delicate golden bracelet adorned with charms, and a single blue heart made of stone. He hair was loose and curled just a bit, it contrasted with the white of her top making it appear as if it was more golden then it really was, her bright blue eyes shone like gem stones.
Sage wore something similar, except her colors were in shades of baby blue, her shoes were platformed, but not that high, her pants didn't flare much, but they were loose. She had on a golden chain running trough the belt loops with a pendulum swinging down on the front of her left thigh. Her baby blue top was knitted, the turtleneck was loose and it pulled about her neck hanging down front, from under it a chain with a gold cross hung. Her hair was tied in a loose ponytail, just to keep it out of her face when she danced.
The other guys appeared and the girls stared, Duo was a stunner, or at least it's how Katie saw him. He wore black sport shoes with black tight jeans, on top he had a tank top and a vest, around his neck was a bandana hanging. And on his shoulder they could see a temporary tattoo of a skull. He pulled out black shades and put them on. "Always the bad boy eh Duo?" Katie asked. He smiled broadly and nodded.
Trowa, now he was different from the others, they were used to see him in a turtleneck and jeans, form fitting. But for once he had on looser pants and a red jersey that went purple towards the shoulders it had tiny holes in it, and was like a fine net, under it they could see a black tee, on the jersey there was number 88 in black, he looked slightly uncomfortable with himself, causing the girls to chuckle. "Trowa, you don't like it?" Sage asked. "I like it, it's the back that makes me worried," he turned around, showing everyone that above the '88' on his back there was a choosey word 'Heartbreaker' the girls chuckled again, "It's ok Trowa, it looks fine," Jessica assured him, only mildly noting the tint of pink on his cheeks as he turned back around.
Amber got Quatre something more modest, he had on jeans, which was unusual for him, on top he had a loose Hawaii shirt, that unlike Heero's didn't have any images on it, but it was in a very nice floral pattern, not too flashy, but not too dull. "Girls, let's go!" Duo was hopping from foot to foot, anxious to get to the dance.
They moved to their van and soon pooled out of the driveway and headed for the nightclub the school rented for the dance.
Half an hour later they arrived and flashed their tickets, stepping into the club. It was huge; dancers already occupied the floor. Lights flashed over the floor and music was echoing over the club. The bar on the side was occupied as the barkeep tried to keep customers happy with requests for drinks. The snack tables were loaded with all sorts of junk food. "Ok guys… no alcohol, got it? That goes double for you Duo," Sage cautioned. "Oh crud," he complained. Laughter erupted, and even Heero couldn't help but smile. The gang split up, Mandy and Sage hit the floor. Katie and Duo went by the snack tables. Jessica gone up to the barkeep and managed to nap some punch glasses out of line, making a few drinkers mad, but she didn't care. Heero sat some distance off, watching Mandy dance. Quatre went to join Amber as she headed to the corner of the floor to dance with her. Trowa leaned on the wall by where Heero was sitting.
Jessica approached him and handed him a glass with a straw in it, "I hope you're not planning on standing the whole night," she told him jokingly. She gave Heero another glass, which he accepted with a nod. Trowa remained leaning against the wall and suddenly it struck her why he refused to move away from the wall, Jessica laughed, confusing both of them. Mandy appeared and plopped down next to Heero, "So… are you two going to stick to walls like flies all night? Or are you two going to dance?" she asked. "Oh common Trowa, I'm sorry about the jersey, but… I though it'd look cute on you," Jessica said hoping the darkness of the club would hide her blush; she bowed her head, making sure the rim of her hat hid her face.
She was snapped out of her trance by Ashley's stuck-up voice, "Well hello boys, my, my Heero you look stunning…" she said. Heero had to contain a growl from escaping his throat, the black haired girl was dressed like a slut, and she had on a tight, miniskirt dress that covered very little. He evaluated his escape possibilities, "Mandy, come dance with me," he finally asked. Mandy was in shock, "Sure…" she replied. Heero took her hand and both walked to the dance floor leaving Ashley to steam on her own. "How… dare she," Ashley hissed. "She dares because it is obvious Heero likes her," Trowa's calm voice was like a bucket of cold water hitting Ashley, the girl finally lost it and stomped off, dejected. "You really think so?" Jessica asked, the tall pilot just nodded, continued to watch the dance floor, Jessica stood beside him, drinking her punch quietly.
On the dance floor Heero and Mandy were dancing, at least Heero was trying to dance, he was watching all the guys and trying to pick things up. Mandy was amused by the fact he was somewhat klutzy.
The song ended and the DJ came on, "Yo swing-cats and kittens," he said in a buoyant voice, "I think it's time to announce our best dancing couple competition. I will now play a slow song, and the couple that looks most perfect together will get sweet little prize pack, we have CDs in here… and a whole lot of other stuff. Oh and this is just the little competition, we will still be deciding the king and queen of the dance in accord to the slow songs I play tonight. So ladies and gentleman get paired up." Clapping echoed as the announced finished his announcement and continued shuffling songs.
Jessica watched with mild sadness, she knew that she wouldn't be able to win those CD's, she just didn't want to slow dance with any guy in the whole club besides the pilot standing beside her, she however doubted he would be leaving the safety of the wall any time soon. The couple on the dance floor gathered, Jessica almost laughed, there were a few couples that looked totally off, she pictured the perfect couple as him being taller then she was, not the other way around. Heero and Mandy, and much to her surprise Amber and Quatre were still on the dance floor so logically she assumed they would try to win, she knew they could win, Quatre and Amber looked just so perfect together.
"Jessica, you want those CDs? Don't you?" she was shocked when she heard Trowa's voice float over the quiet, now that the music was hushed for an instant. She watched Duo lead Katie to the floor, " Yea… I guess," she said, not really paying attention. "Then… would you dance with me?" Trowa asked next. Jessica glanced at him, "I don't think dancing by the wall counts," she teased. "I can leave the wall for a dance," he replied. "Alright, just one dance mister," she told him, mentally kicking herself, she knew she wanted more then one from him. "Sure," Trowa said, it totally escaped her that he crossed his fingers behind his back. The two casually strolled to the dance floor, right towards the middle where the others were.
The DJ finally set the music to play and began watching the crowd, with the first notes, the couples got into the classic slow-dance position. Both Quatre and Amber were blushing crimson. Heero and Mandy were moving in perfect sync, as if they could tell each other's steps by instinct. Katie and Duo were a bit too close for a 'friendly' dance, but all around they looked good. Trowa and Jessica kept a friendly distance, but even they were slowly drawing closer to each other.
Sage watched from the sidelines, she knew that this competition would seal them together in a special bond. She could tell that they would stay the way they are for a while, although she liked Quatre, the irony was, she found out she wasn't jealous about him dancing with Amber, she was almost happy, the two looked perfect together, she wouldn't be amazed if they won.
The DJ continued to watch the dancing couples, his eyes strayed over the middle, he noticed at first that the four couples in the middle were looking extremely comfortable with each other, the other couple did everything too perfectly, he could tell they were going in the for the price pack. But the four in the middle, they didn't seem to care about the prize, they were in it for the dance itself. He watched them closely, trying to decide on which should get the prize pack, all four looked great, but he had only one prize pack.
The song drew to a conclusion and most couples instantly sprang apart. Trowa and Jessica lingered, Jessica rose on tiptoe gently and pecked him on the cheek, "Thanks for the dance," with the she broke out of his embrace and made a hasty getaway. He just stood there, shocked at the kiss, involuntarily a smile rose to his features, he liked this side of the most stubborn of the girls, and he knew she was stubborn, he saw first hand she liked to argue and think critically, he could defiantly describe her as a stubborn mule.
The DJ clapped and took the microphone, "I would like all the couples to stay by the floor, I have made a decision, it was a hard one, but I think it is a fair one," he paused to look over the crowd that clapped. "I would like that girl in all white, and the boy in the floral shirt to step up here." Clapping echoed again. It took Amber and Quatre a second to realize the DJ was talking about them… "Oh lord!" Amber shyly made her way to the stage, followed by an equally shy and blushing Quatre. "Congrats you two," the DJ handed them a basket filled with CDs, and other stuff that neither could exactly make out from under the plastic nylon cover of the basket.
The night went on, the gang took turns guarding the basket, as they wanted to dance to different songs. Duo managed to chug a glass of beer before he was noticed, but then he managed to melt hearts with a single goofy smile. Sage had a dance with Quatre when Amber wanted to have some rest. Jessica kept avoiding Trowa; she still couldn't believe she actually kissed him on the cheek like that. In front of some many people. Heero and Mandy danced to every slow song that rolled along, Heero was having too much fun to stop. Katie was sitting beside the now-very-flirty Duo, the glass of Beer he drunk made him very chatty, and he kept flirting with her, which surprised her, but she went along with it, a glass of beet wasn't enough to make him forget it all in the morning, she wanted to see his reaction in the morning.
Finally as the last slow dance finished, the DJ took the mike again, "Ok ladies and gentleman, that was our last dance, I have decided on the king and queen of the dance tonight. They have danced to every single slow song I played tonight, and for such endurance, they deserve the crowns," the DJ jumped off the stage and walked over to Heero and Mandy, "and here they are, the king, and queen of this dance," he ushered them to the stage.
Ashley nearly choked on her drink, Carol and Mimi were sitting beside her began to hit the girl on her back. "Mandy is so going to pay, that crown should've belonged to me," she said. "Yes, it sure should've been yours Ashley, don't worry, Heero will be yours in the end," Carol comforted her friend.
Heero was shocked that he was chosen King, but he accepted the crown, as well as Mandy accepted her own and the bouquet of roses the DJ gave her. Heero led Mandy off the stage, "So Heero, did you have fun?" Mandy asked. Heero just nodded, "Good." Mandy pecked him on the cheek before coyly moving away towards the rest of the gang. They have gathered the club was clearing as the dance was finished. Heero followed, mildly surprised by her kiss.
The gang finally went home, still laughing at Duo, who wouldn't stop chatting away like a chatterbox. Katie had to put her hand on his mouth to keep him quiet, although she quickly removed it when the semi-drunk pilot decided to occupy himself by kissing her fingers. All around the night went well for all of them.
