Chapter #7: 'Area 51' Part 3/3: Phoenix Hells Inferno

Cosmic Phoenix floated before the fighters as they continued to fire their missiles, it would just avoid them, and finally the jets ran dry on firepower. Jessica smiled inside the cockpit, for some strange reason she knew what to do, twin canons rose from CP's landing gear, "My turn…" she said.

Suddenly Phoenix blasted out a cascade of powerful flames at the jets, they swiveled to avoid, but CP countered it and continued to blast them. Suddenly out of two jets, the canopies blew off, and the pilots ejected just a second before the jets overheated, overloaded, and blew up. The other jets fled, and the tanks vanished. Cosmic Phoenix shrieked again, just as angry, like a wild enraged eagle, "Ok people, lets go, we got what we came here for," she said. The guys nodded, still in shock of how quickly the Gundam overloaded the F16 jets fighter, and they were made of titanium, they shrugged, Leos were made of titanium, they still slew them fast.

The Gundams took off, "About the van," Amber began; she hated to leave their car here. "No sweat… I got it covered," CP banked down as they flew over the railing, out of it's landing gear, it's hands formed grappling hooks, on magnets it grabbed the car by the roof and took off, the van in it's hands, "see… I got it covered," Jessica spoke up. Cosmic Phoenix automatically activated more boosters from its wings to compensate for the additional weight of the car in its hands. "We have to fly high, above the clouds," Heero spoke up, his radar we picking up a lot of signatures, a city was close by; he didn't want to be seen.

Some hour's later, Chicago rose above the horizon, the sky was still dark but the city shone like a candle in the darkness. "Now where are we going to hide the big guys?" Jessica asked. "I have that covered," Amber spoke up. "During the second world war my grandpa, the best mechanic of Chicago at the time, made a secret house deep in the cave nearby, it has a secret chamber that only my family knows about. I believe the mechanism to open should still work. Grandpa took me there when I was little, and he showed me the trigger mechanism, the chamber is big enough to hide his old crop duster vintage plane, I think it will fit the Gundams," the girl explained. "Well lead," Heero said, a cave was good, radar and sonar didn't exactly penetrate solid rock walls, and if the chamber was indeed hidden, and it was closeable, it would be perfect.

Tempest Hurricane banked off and took the lead, the other Gundams followed. Ten minutes later they landed by the giant grotto of a limestone cave, it was huge. Cosmic Phoenix lowered the van and transformed, joining the others. As they walked in, the sound of dripping water greeted them, the ceiling was devoid of all Stalactites, and the floor was without any stalagmites, it looked like it was cleaned out to form a clear strip trough which a plane would indeed be able to wheel through. Cosmic Phoenix and Hellraiser raised their arms, their flamethrowers sparking up to form torches.

The cave was pitch dark, not a touch of light came in from the huge grotto, since the grotto faced south, and the sun never reached it during the day, "Jess walk ahead, grandpa marked the sliding door with a special symbol, I have to see it, the wall is very well disguised," Amber spoke up. Jessica nodded and the ten Gundams continued walking on, slowly the cave began to slope down, going deeper underground. "I see why your grandpa used this cave as a bomb shelter, an atom bomb wouldn't penetrate these walls, it's even making our communication links fuzzy. "No sorry, that's me… Hyper Jammers," Duo was grinning like a fool. "Don't worry Duo, I got a pair too," as Jessica said that, out of Cosmic Phoenix's wing, the devices extended, "See?" she asked. Duo nodded. The devices flipped back down.

"Stop! There it is," Amber make her Gundam point to the wall, indeed on the wall, in yellow paint that was barely distinguishable from the yellowish limestone wall of the cave was the Greek letter Omega. Just then Duo notices a matching symbol on Cosmic Phoenix's wings, "Hey neat! Jessica's Gundam has matching symbols," he pointed out. "Ironic aint it? Well, these symbols on CP are the symbols of her power, I'll tell you my meaning to the somewhat long and strange name of this Gundam some time later," Jessica told him, Duo nodded, he couldn't wait, the name was indeed strange and long.

Amber got of her cockpit and walked to the wall, passing her hand over the painted symbol, she pressed a hidden lever. The wall split into two, one part slid away, the other part slid up. "Your Grandpa was a genius!" Katie commented. Suddenly there was a grinding noise as the sideway-sliding panel froze, "It's stuck! It's supposed to go twice as wide!" Sapphire yelled. She examined the rails, "Oh here's a problem, the door wasn't opened for so long, a stalagmite started forming here," Amber kicked the little rock formation a few times and it broke off, the door resumed opening smoothly. It then stopped again, "There you have it," Amber yelled. She ran back to her Gundam, climbed in and powered up again.

The Gundams stepped inside the chamber, careful not to crush the fragile steel rails on the floor on which the wall slid. As Hellraiser and Cosmic Phoenix shed light on the chamber, they were stopped with the sight of an old, single engine propeller plane. "Grandpa's 'Old Betsy', as he called it. Grandpa restored it from scrap with his own two hands, but it was never enough, so he built this place so he could keep Betsy safe after his death, he loved that plane, even when he retired and could no longer fly it," Amber spoke. "I said it once, I say it again… your grandpa was a genius!" Katie called. "I agree," Heero replied as he eyed the old plane, it was a bit rusty on the wings since it wasn't oiled for quite some time. But Heero doubted that it was grounded, a little bit of maintenance and he could probably make this bird fly again, it would be a good thing to amuse him since he couldn't fly his Gundam around town.

They settled their Gundams along the walls and exited their cockpits. "Amber, thank you for this hiding place," Heero spoke. "Indeed, Thanks," Wufei nearly choked on the last words and laughter broke out, echoing trough the cave. "You're welcome guys… Grandpa always said that the symbol he drew on the wall, gave this cave special purpose, now I have figured out what he meant. Grandpa always said he saw the future. In some backwards way, he may have saw the Gundams before us, after all, grandpa always told me when I was little, that some day I will fly as free as a bird, well with Tempest Hurricane today, I felt that freedom," Amber's eyes got misty a little thinking of her favorite grandfather.

"What happened to your grandfather?" Duo asked. The girls gave him a death glare, "Grandfather died two years ago in his sleep, of old age, he was ninety eight," the girl replied. "Oh well, he wouldn't want me sad… now how about we go back home, I'm tired…" the girl yawned, "I need some sleep," she finished. The pilots moved out. Sapphire cast one final glance at Tempest Hurricane before she triggered the door mechanism to close; the door closed smoothly… sealing their Gundams to rest, for the time being.
