Chapter #16: The Birth Of The Resistance
That evening, Helena Bailey left, satisfied that Jessica was safe, she promised not to tell Arthur anything about the boys. Elizabeth and William Koch were also leaving in the evening; they were heading for their upstate house. "It was nice meeting you boys," Elizabeth began as William carried their suitcases to the car. "You too Mrs. Koch," Quatre smiled. "Yea, for parents… you are cool," Duo added, wincing almost immediately when Amber kicked him in the shin. Elizabeth hugged Amber, and moved to the car. A minute later it drove off. Amber sighed; "I can be myself again!" she mumbled and moved back inside, followed by the gang. "Can we have pizza?" Duo asked. "The phone number is on the table Duo, the phone is there too… the usual, hop to it," Jessica mumbled as if she had said it about a hundred times before. "Girls, a word with you," She added. The other girls exchanged glances but followed Jessica to her room.
"What's up?" Sage asked. Jessica suddenly turned around with a grin that only a cat that just ate the canary would have, "Guess what!" she exclaimed. "You finally went insane?" Mandy wondered idly. "No," Jessica shut the door and locked it. It completely escaped her that Duo was in the hallway, and the gossiper decided to put his ear against her door since he was curious. "Spill it Jessibelle," Amber told her, Amber only used her full name when she was mildly annoyed. "Whelp, you know that you bailed on me in the morning today right… so I asked if I could have a word with Trowa-kun, and…" she smiled again, "Lets just say, it went better then I thought, cut short… we kissed," Jessica finally spilled the gossip, she trusted her friends enough. The girls stared deadpanned at her, "You're kidding… right?" Mandy asked, "Lucky dog! Heero wouldn't even notice me in the same room with a spotlight on me," she added sadly, Completely unaware of the chief gossiper by their door.
Duo's eyebrows hit the roof when he heard that gossip, "Damn… I knew she had a thing for him," he moved away from the door having just learned some juicy gossip, this could be blackmail in case he ever got Heero or Mandy pissed off at him again, considering their lack of sense of humor, Duo thought pissing them off would be easy.
Ten minutes later the doorbell rang, the girls finished their gossiping and were now watching TV. Suddenly the doorbell rang, "Jess get the pizza," Sage said. Jessica bolted up and moved to the door. Opening the door she gave the cash to the pizza boy and took their carton, mentally beginning to tick off seconds until the smell would draw Duo from wherever the hell he was. She began to close the door when a hand stopped it. Jessica swung the door back open, "Hey Jess!" a boy about seventeen years old, with short reddish hair and brown eyes stood there. "Mike? What the hell are you doing here?" she asked.
"Aww… is that a way to greet your favorite little cousin? And is that pizza for me? It smells delicious," he reached for the box but Jessica slapped his hand away, Michael Bailey smiled a bit, "Oh fine… so, are you going to let me in any time soon?" he asked next. Jessica growled and moved away from the doorway to let her other family enter. "Jessica! Where's the pizza? Get it in here before Duo eats it all," Mandy's voice shouted from the living room.
Mike suddenly grinned, "So it's true… where are they?" Jessica moved to the living room and Mike dumped his small bag by the door, "Oh common… tell me!" he prodded. The other girls looked at him like he spouted a second head. "Mike, what the hell are you doing here?" Sage asked. "Funny, Jess asked the same thing," Mike replied cockily. "Pizza! Hey who's the new guy?" Duo stopped short of running right into Mike when he raced downstairs to grab his pizza. "Duo Maxwell, hey you're cool…" Mike told him. "Duo… this is Mike, my annoying little cousin, don't mind him, he's just about leaving," Jessica replied. "Hey I aint leaving' I came all the way here just to meet these five, so I aint leaving." Mike retorted.
The other guys appeared, noticing mike and his likeness to Jessica, Heero immediately put two and two together. The other guys weren't far behind. "Darn Jess, why didn't you tell me before, now I know why you needed that four by four drive, you still owe me for that," Mike began. "I owe you nothing," Jessica replied curtly, the two got into a staring match. The girls shook their heads, "Sorry guys… these two are like cat and dog, and Mike is definitely the dog," Sage said. "I AM NOT A DOG!" Mike hollered. "You bark like one," Amber replied. "Hey the pizza is getting cold, can we eat now?" Duo drew the attention back to the heavenly food Jessica still held in her arms.
"Yea, I'm hungry, let's chow down," Mike added. "Not another Maxwell," they heard Heero mutter. Jessica placed the box down on the coffee table, and in five seconds flat it was empty, everyone grabbed a slice. Jessica watched Mike, something about his arrival wasn't right in her mind, he wanted something she just knew him enough to know when he visits, it's not a courtesy call. "Ok Mike, all foolishness aside, why the hell are you here?" She asked. Mike looked up, still chewing his pizza, he raised a finger in a gesture for some time and chewed through the food in his mouth and swallowed, "Oh common Jess, I know you love me, can't I drop by sometimes… and in case you're wandering, I know about the big guys… I wonna see them," he finally spit out his agenda.
Heero death-glared Mike, but he ignored it, "Don't bother Heero, just like on Duo, that death-glare is not effective on him, he seen too many from Jessica," Mandy told Heero quietly; he shook his head and resumed eating. "Mike don't start," Jessica warned. "I really don't see any harm with him seeing the gundams, I mean they were printed on the front page and everything, of course, we are going to have to blindfold him so he doesn't know where exactly we hide them," Duo spoke up. "I'll be good, I promise," Mike added with a smile. "No," Heero replied in monotone. "You heard him Mike, when he sais 'No' it means 'No' now since you'll showed up unannounced, you order the next pizza, on your tab… Duo will tell exactly what toppings we want, and Duo… don't worry about the extra dollar for each extra topping, Mike will cover it all, he's that nice… aren't you Mike?" Jessica said, Duo smiled, Mike groaned, with that the two left. "Oh and Duo… Make it extra large!" Jessica yelled after the two. Duo just raised a thumb to show he heard her.
"Tell me, does Jessica boss you five around?" Mike asked. "Nope… she's actually very nice to us," Duo replied. "Not fair! She always bosses me around, and I'm family!" Mike continued to mutter to himself.
"I pity Mike, Jess you're overly cruel to him," Amber stated. "Bite me," Jessica replied. Mike came back waving thirty bucks, "Jess, you owe me! You owe me big… I wanted to buy a new spanner with these smackers," He grumbled. Jessica smiled, "Mike, learn… cruelty is my specialty," Jessica replied folding her arms. Heero got up and left the room, he had enough of this, he had other things to work on.
Mike sat down, "I also came because I heard some rumors around, they say that the gundams sparked rebellion all over the USA, they say some people have organized a resistance force, and they demand that the aliens would leave, they still are few in numbers, but I bet finding those who weren't pleased with the aliens would be easy. I saw a anti-companion website on the net last night, not everyone wants there creeps up there blocking our moon with their giant ship." Mike concluded. "What they do is not a concern of ours," Wufei spoke. "But there's a catch, on the website, they have a million dollar reward for someone who will lead them to the location of the 'Mecha Giants' they want to make the gundams their symbols of resistance," Mike added. "Why does this suddenly remind me of the White Fang?" Quatre asked. Mike shrugged, "I'll show you the site later if you like, it's really quite interesting," he finished.
"If a war breaks about between the earth and the aliens, many people will die, and that cant be allowed to happen, I'm starting to think that what we did inadvertently put the earth under a great risk," Amber spoke. "I would have to agree, but I have a feeling that gundams or not, a resistance force would have risen anyways," Trowa put in. "Makes sense, Humans don't take change lightly, we have our whole history to prove it," Mandy added. "This is all fine and dandy, but one thing remains, people still don't want the aliens here, and that alone is possibility for conflict, as Ms. Relena said once, it takes only two to start a conflict," Quatre added.
"I also read that one of the factory workers is the new leader of the local Chicago 'UACR' or the 'Underground Alien Companion Resistance', he said on the website that he saw the light of truth when he saw the ten giants that night, and he owes his life to them," Mike added. "Mike, where do you get this stuff?" Jessica wondered. "The Internet, where else?" Mike replied in a cocky fashion. "But ten giants? Who's the other pilot?" he added. "Katie, our other friend," Mandy put in. "Oh I see…" Mike got that rare thoughtful look about him.
---Somewhere In Chicago---
A man sat in his office, him and about a thousand other brave Chicago men and women consisted the 'UACR', he was working on the new files. They have found an old mine shaft that laid in solid bedrock, so now they were busy converting it into a secret underground base. The mine still had resources in it's walls, and raw metals. They used the car factory to fashion the metal. Men were working round the clock to widen some chambers and make them more hospitable. A knock on his office door alerted him, "Sir we have a lead, a certain man said he saw the giant mechas fly towards the Chicago limestone caves one evening, he lives not far from the caves," he laid down an interview tape with the elderly man.
The leader smiled, "So now we know where these ten are hidden. Good… gather a team, I want the pilots ambushed next time they come for the mechas, don't hurt them or anything. But I would like them brought here, I need to have a word with the ten of them," the man nodded, "As you wish Mr. Lee," he saluted and turned around to leave. Jacob Lee, the leader of the resistance grinned, "These aliens wont know what hit them," he thought to himself.
