Chapter 12:

Duo woke early the next morning feeling more than a little restless having to sleep in a bed that wasn't his musty mattress back at the apartment. By the way the other children were still sleeping, he figured it was still early in the morning. Silently, the braided youth walked aimlessly through the church. It was barely standing on its own by the way it creaked and groaned under the gravity on the colony.

The pillars went high up into the shadows of the rafters. Chandeliers were everywhere but only two were lit, the one in the reception room and another further down a hall way to the right wing. Everything else was barely lit by the gradually rising sun. Duo bypassed the darker shadows left by the lack of sunlight warily. He didn't like the dark and he was more than a little sure that he was being watched but by who? He trekked on bravely turning another corner. Hopefully everything led in a circle that would take him back to the others. Common sense told him if he turned back and went the way he came, he'd have a better chance. But the shadows got so much darker whenever he thought to do so.

He eventually found himself in a new room that looked almost identical to the congregation room he and Helen had seen the night before. This one, however, was covered from ceiling to floor in cobweb and dust. No chandeliers hung from the ceiling. The only form of light present was the colorful glow of the sun hitting the arched stained glass windows lining the east and west walls. In the middle was a single white pillar that would've taken up over half the other congregation room. Aisles of benches filled over seventy five percent of the room while the rest was left for a small stage.

Duo walked silently through the room unmindful of his small feet leaving prints in the thick layer of dust. His eyes were riveted to the windows, one to be specific. It was a picture of Mother Mary smiling down at the small bundle in her hands. A single baby hand reached up towards her face. The look of tenderness and affection from Mary glowed in her pale peach face. The scenery behind her, however, didn't match the moment. Instead of soft blue skies behind her, there was red, blood red. The black form of a tree clawed towards the crimson sky in the background. Black cracks splintered across the sky almost reaching into the window neighboring it.

Duo stared totally enraptured with the picture before his eyes. Absently, he could hear voice, one whispering his name and more mumbling words he couldn't understand. He slowly took a step towards the area until he could feel the warmth of the light spilling from the window. The voice grew louder until he was startled out of his trance. He looked around quickly still hearing the monotonous chanting his ears but not being able to find the source of it.

"Shinigami....."

He whipped around quickly as his ears finally pinpointed the source. His body tensed and relaxed as his eyes focused on the doused form of a young girl. Her eyes looked at him with a tiredness that reached into her soul.

"Who are you?" Duo asked flitting his gaze over the girl quickly. "You're all wet, you'll get sick!" He shouted forgetting to wait for the answer to his question. Without thinking he grabbed the girl by the arm and pulled her along with him the way he had came, shadows be damned. They turned corner after corner without a word until Duo was sure they were where he remembered Father Maxwell's study being.

The door to said study opened slowly and Helen stepped out. She was dressed in a simple pair of jeans and a modest fushia colored long sleeved shirt. Her hair was pinned up neatly on her head. "Duo, sweetie, where have you been?" She questioned.

Duo paused letting his hand fall from his new acquaintance's arm. "I found a girl and she's all wet."

"What girl?" Helen asked looking up and down the hall. Duo looked back searching both ends of the corridor as well. He frowned when he only found the empty space of the poorly lit area.

"She was just here. She looked so tired."

"Hm...maybe she went to breakfast. Come on." Helen held out her hand and smiled lightly. Still frowning, Duo took her hand. "Father Maxwell said that they're having bacon today."

"With toast and jam?"

"Yup."

J growled as he looked over G and S. They had been the only ones to show up from what Catherine had said. Glaring from one man to the other, he threw his ruined laptop on to the table top. G looked with mild interest to the compact computer raising an eyebrow at the cd case that was protruding from one side to the other.

"Now, before you begin to question me, I will explain everything." J said as professionally as he could. His mind was still working to prove that he had imagined everything that had happened. "I had placed the boy in the room by himself with a self teaching cd playing." He stated motioning to Heero who was sitting quietly at the large table with his hands folded in front of him and his legs kicking absently. The image was comical seeing the youth's serious expression yet childish impulses. "He came to me claiming that there was a girl inside the room I had left him in ALONE." Gradually, J began to pace the floor in front of the table. "When I came back, I searched the room for the alleged girl and found nothing out of the ordinary other than the screen being off. I moved to turn it on and the girl was...just there."
"Are you telling us the girl appeared out of nowhere?" G said letting J know he thought the old man was crazy.

"I am still thinking of possibilities of her sneaking into the room while I'm partially turned to the door." J paused to glare balefully at the beak nosed man. He began to pace again. "The door was in my peripheral so that is not possible. Back onto the topic. I turned and asked her a few questions. All she said was she was cold, that she was no one, and that she was tired in Japanese mind you. She was soaked in blood tinted water. I turned to retrieve a towel for her and when I turned back, there was a cd case flying towards me." J paused to pick up a cd case from his desk. Taking the cd out of the case, he slammed it onto the table the other two were seated at. The case shattered. "It went through my screen yet, the same brand of case can't even handle begin slammed with normal force." He glowered. "To add to it, the screen functioned perfectly showing me an image of Odin bloodied and more than a little dead. He spoke to Heero stating that he loved him."

"J, this is hard to believe." S said slowly taking in the man's ragged state. "The death of your nephew may have caused you to hallucinate all of this."

"And tell me, did I hallucinate closing my front door and looking back to find it ajar with a someone watching as I left? I think not." J hissed. S held up his hand in a helpless gesture. "Then tell me, S, G, how did that end up through my screen?"

"Maybe the boy did it." G offered.

"Heero is a boy barely over six or seven. What seven year old do you know that can put a cd case through a screen, G." S scoffed. He stood grabbing his chin thoughtfully. He analyzed the computer with his eyes before reaching for it. "Is it possible you had it near something that could have exploded or ejected it with enough velocity and force to keep the case intact and put it through the screen?" He asked turning the computer then setting it down again. He opened it almost jumping back when the screen blinked on. The screen remained black with white symbols screening across. “Hmm…it looks like some sort of code.”

S stood slowly approaching the computer. “The power supply to the screen should be nonfunctional with that cd case through it.” He stated. He moved to the side of G and pressed the ESC key. The symbols stopped scrolling. “Why, this is just gibberish.” He reported in frustration. None of the characters were legible or located on the keyboard. “What is this?”

No sooner had he asked the question, the screen went black. Seconds later a single bold faced zero faded into view.
