A.C. 205
Preventors, Tokyo headquarters

Wufei stared out the window watching as his past walked away for the second time. He waited for the pain he had known last time. Waited for the heaviness that would fill him. Instead he realized he just felt numb. He watched Duo stop in the road below. Saw as he turned around as if knowing that Wufei stood there at the window sixteen stories up watching him. He saw the smile that crossed Duo’s face. He knew that smile as well as he knew all of Duo’s facial features. It was rare for him to show that soft side of him. That sweet smile that Wufei had fallen for long ago. Wufei laid his hand flat on the window and lowered his forehead to the glass. Over- it was finally over. When he looked back down Duo was gone and his decision was made.

He walked away from the office that he had spoken with Duo in not twenty minutes before and headed for Midii Une’s office. “Come in.” She called out when he knocked on the door. She was standing at her desk fiddling with files. She looked up and knew his answer. “You’ve decided.” She asked softly as she set down the file that she held in her hand. Her hair was pulled back in a bun with strands of hair falling loose to frame her face.

Wufei nodded. “I can’t come back to Tokyo headquarters.” His voice was empty as he stared past her through the large picture frame window. The sun was setting streaking the sky with bright shades of red and orange the dark blue that would erase that vividness still merely a looming threat as it stained the edge of the sky.

She sighed and stared at the twenty-five-year-old Chinese pilot. She had known him since he had entered Preventors at the end of the war. She knew how deep his pride ran. How strong his need for justice pushed him toward what he believed to be the right path. She had seen his walls tumble years earlier as his faith was tested. “I would be assigning you to another partner. Duo has . . . ”

“Heero.” Wufei finished for her his eyes darkening as he thought of the other pilot. Ill feelings toward the other man had caused him too much anger over the years. It had taken him too long to overcome the hatred that had burned inside his heart. Once Heero had been a friend. He had few friends in his short life and to have been betrayed the way that he had it had been too much for him to deal with. Not after he had turned away from all of his beliefs, all that had been ingrained into his mind by his father and teachers, for the love of Duo.

With a heavy sigh Midii fell to her seat. “We should have made some kind of clause for relationships between agents.” She crossed her legs and tapped her foot as she thought about ways to fix this as she studied him. Time had changed the pilots. Side effects from the drugs the scientists had given them during the war had caused them all to shoot up over six feet when they had discontinued their drug regimens. At six foot three with his quiet demeanor he was intimidating. His facial features were stern cut deep making him appear as if he were cut from stone. There was a time that he had worn his hair loose around his face but now it was pulled back severely like he had worn it through the war. There was nothing giving about him anymore. One look in his coal colored eyes had strangers turning away from him as quickly as possible.

“You did. There are clauses. We are your elite though. We aren’t held to any of the rules other agents are held to.” He smirked as he leaned against the door jamb his arms crossed over his chest.

A well-plucked eyebrow was raised as she stared at the cocky agent. “As if I could have held you to rules if I wanted too. The five of you are like loose cannons. No one can control you. We can’t regulate what you do. The five of you do what you want when you want and when reprimanded you just look at us and say ‘well find someone you can control.’ Just as you are doing now”

“Then why am I here.” He stretched out his arms and stared at her when she threw up her hands in frustration.

“Because! The five of you are the best. Not one agent has had scores like you. There is no success rate that compares. The reprimands are nothing compared to what you have done and the honest truth is that we need you. We need you here. I need you to run another sector. You can be the head of it. I will give you complete control.”

“Midii I can’t. I loved him once. You understand what that took from me. How much I had to go against.” His face fell and took on a look that was too old for his years.

“I understand Wufei.”

“All that I threw away and what he did. He turned his back on seven years of our lives. I was his partner in every way for seven years.” He paced the room. “I can’t be around them. I don’t want to face the questions.”

“Then you have turned coward. Your father may not have approved of your relationship but he would have been ashamed of the running that you have done for the last three years. What have you accomplished? You have turned away from the company. There is so much good that you could have done”

He started to speak when the explosion shook the glass of the window behind Une. Sirens were going off everywhere and agents were screaming as they ran through the halls. clouds of black smoke destroyed the painting the sky had made as the sun faded into the night. “What was that?” Fear tingled down his spine as he stared at the smoke that had came from the direction that he had watched Duo walk into.

“It’s coming from the field.” She reached for the radio she kept on her hip. “Une to the Field Captain, come in. Une to the Field Captain, come in. Over” She called as they ran for the elevator.

“Lady Une, this is Field Captain Mokoyuma. Over.” The calm voice of the field director said as voices rose frantically around him. The siren blared and there were people yelling directions as they raced to fix whatever had gone wrong.

“Captain, What is the situation?” Her eyes scanned the numbers over the door of the elevator counting down as she waited impatiently.

“Lady Une one of the mobile suits destructed during field testing.” He responded

“Was it a doll?” She asked knowing that the explosion was extreme that there was minimal chance of survival for a pilot if there was one.

“No ma’am. It was a new design that Colonel Maxwell has been working on. He has had it one the field for the last two weeks having us run diagnostics on it.”

“Who was piloting it?” Her voice was cautious as she stared at Wufei. As she watched as he went pale, his hands gripping the bar in the back of the elevator.

There was a pause. “Agent Moro was scheduled to pilot the prototype, but the Colonel arrived thirty minutes ago and said that he would be taking over. Colonel Maxwell was inside when the explosion happened.” Wufei felt the air he had been holding escape his lungs and the world spin. He felt numb as he looked at Midii. It couldn’t be. It couldn’t have been him inside. Not his Duo.
