Chapter Two
*Flashback*
A.C. 196
Wufei sneered as he watched his partner play video games as he worked on their latest assignment. He would never understand how he had been the lucky one to get paired with Maxwell. Hell he would have even taken Heero’s place as the head of Relena’s security instead of this. “Maxwell, do you ever act like a normal human being?” He snapped agitated. There were too many sounds breaking his concentration.
Duo smirked and looked at Wufei. “Are you sure that you should be the one to judge who is normal and who is not wolfie.” His violet eyes twinkled with mischief through his choppy bangs. He had grown nearly a foot in the six months since the end of the war and it made him seem thinner, more willowy.
“Stop calling me that.” Wufei snapped. They were presently in Duo’s apartment. How Wufei had been convinced to work there he would never know but he was there and it was just a way for the childish American to goof off while he did everything. He could feel the warmth of his neck as the anger rose in him.
“Ooh wolfie, is angry.” Duo grinned taking more enjoyment in Wufei then the video game that he was barely paying attention too. He just wanted to get Wufei riled up. “Come on relax.” He tossed one of the couch pillows at his partner.
“How the hell can I relax when I am doing everything and once again you are fooling around with your toys.” Tossing the pillow aside he slammed his notebook shut and closed his laptop.
“It helps my creativity.” Duo hid his smirk as he continued to play. It was a war game and all that could be heard was Uzi’s going off and bombs being detonated.
“Bullshit. It helps you slack off while I get to do everything.” He snapped as he jumped up and turned off the tv. He would be damned if he put up with this.
“Damn it. I was nearly done with that level.” He jumped up. “Why the hell don’t you pull the stick out of your ass and take two minutes to enjoy yourself. How the hell did I get stuck with a partner like you.”
“ME. I’m asking the same damn thing. I must be being punished for something. This is Une’s sick joke putting me with you. You don’t care about anything other then insulting everyone with your little nicknames, playing your annoying games that were made for children, and causing problems. When the hell are you going to grow up and act like the pilot that preventors expected you to be instead of the immature juvenile delinquent that Doktor G found in a back alley.”
“To hell with you Wufei.” His past was a sore spot with him. The amusement he had been looking for had flown out the window. His bangs hid his eyes form Wufei.
Wufei sneered. “Too hot for you to handle Maxwell. Feel the guilt. You! Duo Maxwell, the lone survivor. Too immature to suck it up and get his work done. Wasting all those lives that were given while trying to protect you.”
Duo’s fist landed in Wufei’s face sending the other man sprawling on the floor knocking over everything in his way. Wufei laid there looking at him shocked that Duo had the gall to hit him while Duo stood over him shaking with fury. “Shut your mouth.” Duo snapped.
Wufei frowned and watched as the other man walked out of the apartment. He knew that he had crossed lines that he had never before thought to go but he hadn’t thought that this would be how the happy go lucky Duo would end up knocking him on his ass. He stretched out his jaw and shook his head. Standing he fixed the table he had knocked over when he fell and cleaned up the shattered lamp.
Guilt churned in his stomach as he went over what he said and knew in his mind he deserved worse then a sore jaw. He sat on the couch and propped his elbows on his knees and let his fingers bury themselves in his hair. Truth of the whole thing was that working with Duo had brought up feelings that he had been unwilling to speak of. Feelings that shamed him, that would shame his family, his clan, his dead wife. It was against everything that he had been taught. He had spent weeks trying to understand what had gone wrong. Why had he began to watch his partner when he was in the room? Why seeing that idiotic smile brightened his day? He had spent so much time trying to prove to his fathers spirit that he was strong. That he was worthy of being the heir to the dragon clan. This just made him question that. Had his father been right was he just too weak. Hadn’t he failed him every time he had been given commands.
He stormed out of the apartment and ran out of the apartment and followed the braided baka finding him in the deserted garage underneath their apartment complex. “Leave me alone Wufei. I don’t want to deal with any more of your bullshit.” Duo said as he leaned over his motorcycle pretending to fix faults that weren’t there.
“No! You can’t leave. Fight me! Fight what I said. Why can’t you prove me wrong? Make me think otherwise about you.” Wufei grabbed Duo’s arm pulling him away from the bike and forcing Duo to look at him. Anger burned in Duo’s violet eyes until Wufei wondered if this would be the end of their partnership, surprisingly the idea scared him.
“Why the hell should I bother trying to convince you otherwise. You are narrow minded and stubborn. You set opinions of everyone else before you even get to know them and then never let them prove you wrong. Why do I sit around and play video games while you work? You don’t let me do otherwise.”
“That’s a lie. If you tried.”
“If I TRIED. I tried. All I got was your better then thou attitude.” he sneered his face distorted. “You the mighty Chang. You are so much better then the rest of the world. How hard it must be for you to be surrounded by people that are unworthy to walk in your shadow.” He pushed Wufei back. He pushed him lighter then he had but enough to push the other man back a couple of feet.
“You have never.” His voice held less anger. His mind was going through all his memories trying to remember. He wanted to argue but he was too shaky to fight it. Never had he driven Duo to this.
“It’s so much easier to be what is expected. You want no say from me. Take an advice on a case would be beneath you. Who do you have to prove yourself to so much that you push everyone away from you? We are your friends yet you avoid us. We are your partners in this sector yet you would rather lock yourself away in an office then work with us. I’m sick of you.” He screamed. Then his lips crashed down against Wufei’s fighting for dominance as his fingers curled in his hair holding Wufei against his mouth.
Wufei’s mouth opened his tongue dueling with Duos. Both wishing to be in charge. Neither wanting to give into the other. Wufei’s hands went to Duo’s shoulders wanting to push him away instead holding him closer. Wufei was the one to step away finally. He was shaking and couldn’t look at Duo in the face. “Wufei.” Duo said
“Don’t. I never should have said what I said.” Wufei said his breathing still shaky. He sat down on the seat of the motorcycle and swept his hair away from his face. He frowned at the hair tie that fell broken in his hand.
“I’m sorry.”
Wufei shook his head and got up his face stern. “It shouldn’t have happened.” He started to walk away.
“Why!” Duo snapped. Spinning around Wufei looked at the other man confused. Hadn’t he just apologized? Didn’t that mean he had regret? “Why shouldn’t it have happened, Wufei? You could have pulled away. You let me kiss you. Why do you take it back? Obviously you have feelings.” Duo stared at him daring him to deny it.
“It’s not right.” Wufei whispered. “You know it’s not.”
“It’s not what we were raised to believe.” Duo snapped. “I came from the streets. I would
have been beat bloody if anyone knew. I was taken in by the church. I would have been kicked out. Do you think that I want this? Do you think that I want you? Your self absorbed and arrogant. I know you. You’ll go up to your apartment and sulk over this until you make it out to be some kind of attack. You’ll keep telling yourself that you aren’t anything different. You have to be the clans’ golden boy. Go ahead Wufei run off like a coward.”
“Don’t talk about me like you know how I feel.”
“Then tell me the truth. You feel something. It was obvious from your reaction.” Duo snapped. “Tell me I’m wrong.”
Wufei fisted his hands and bit at his cheeks. The lie was on the tip of his tongue but all he could do was think of the taste of Duo’s lips that had lingered on his own. He stared at Duo sighing heavily. “YES, Duo. All right YES.”
Duo smiled. “Now see that wasn’t so hard.” He pulled Wufei too him. This time his lips were gentle. Slowly Wufei wrapped his arms around Duo’s waist and sank into the kiss for the first time feeling as if he had found a place that he belonged.
A.C. 205
His chest burned as he ran towards the explosion. He was pushing his body far beyond what he had been accustomed. It had been too long for him since he had exerted himself. He just kept thinking of Duo. He couldn’t lose him, even if he couldn’t have him to himself he couldn’t live in a world where Duo was gone. He saw agents climbing over the wreckage trying to pry the suit open. Pushing people aside he climbed to where the hatch should open. “Give me that.” He screamed snatching the crow bar out of the field captain’s hands. The suit was destroyed metal curling and the arm snapped off. He could hear the metal groan as he pried it apart. His hands were raw and bleeding but he ignored that and everyone around him and cried out as the hatch gave away. They pulled the door away and Wufei’s face fell. The metal hadn’t been destroyed only on the outside. The broken pieces had curled on the inside and piercing Duo’s body. Opening the hatch pulled the metal free leaving the wounds to gush with blood from his chest.
Shaking he unstrapped Duo’s harness. “Duo. Duo wake up.” He called tapping his koibito’s face lightly. “Come on Maxwell. I know that you are in there, wake up.”
Eyelids flickered open and a small smile curled on Duo’s face. “Wolfie.” He whispered his voice rattling as fluid filled his lungs
“Hey Duo. Midii has a Sally coming. We’re going to get you help so just hang on okay. You are going to be okay.” He kissed Duo’s forehead.
Slowly Duo shook his head. “It’s time, Fei.” He whispered. “Its been time for awhile. I was waiting for the sign.”
“NO. Shut up and hold on. Heero is going to be pissed.”
“You got to tell him, Fei.”
“You’ll tell him from the Med. bay.” He pressed his crumpled shirt over the wounds. A
lump formed in his throat as he watched how fast it soaked through with blood. He shook his head and pressed his forehead against Duo’s
“Wufei. You were always the one that had the steady mind. You saw things for what they were. I’m not going to make it. You know that.”
“You can’t. You can’t leave me Duo.” His voice shook with fear trembling as kissed Duo’s lips. They were so cold.
“I was never any good for you. Hurt you. Both of you.”
“No. No, you taught me everything.”
“Love you so much Fei.” He clung to Wufei with one arm his other arm crossed over his stomach his hand fisted around something small. His body was trembling with pain.
“I know. Just hold on.” He closed his eyes as he rocked them back and forth. People were talking to him but he only saw Duo. Only hear Duo’s voice.
“Love Heero too.”
“I’ll get him. I promise.”
“Tell him I’m sorry. I couldn’t keep this up. It didn’t work. The meds didn’t work. Just kept hurting you both.” He rolled his head against Wufei’s shoulder. “You remember the beach.”
“Yes.”
“I loved it there.”
“I know you did. So did I.”
“If I could choose any day to go back to it would be that day. I could relive that day for the rest of my life and never be tired of it. If I could have just given you more. Help him understand.”
“What.”
“Heero is not as strong as you. He won’t . . . h-he wont know wh-what to do. He isn’t like you. He n-needs someone to be there. Please.” He was gasping for air. Wufei could see the panic in his eyes.
“No Duo...”
“Please. Wufei please. I love you both. You didn’t need me. You didn’t need me like he did. Please be there for him. Make him understand. Promise me.” His hand clutched Wufei’s he felt the hard metal of the object Wufei held and instinctively he wrapped his hand around it.
“I promise Duo.” He whispered.
“Love you, Fei . . . ” His eyes dulled before Wufei realized he stopped breathing. He felt
Duo’s hand slide from his own and his body took on a new kind of weight. Holding Duo’s body against his chest, Wufei let his head fall back as he screamed out his pain as his koibito lay dead in his arms.
