Chapter Five

A.C. 205

Wufei came to slowly. He’d been sedated, he knew that from the way he felt as he fought for consciousness. He opened his eyes to the bright light and stared up at the white ceiling above him. He could hear his heart beat coming from the monitor beside him. A saline drip was connected to his arm and breathing tube went in his nostrils. “Wufei.” Quatre said softly as he moved to the bed the first to see that he was awake.

“How long have I been out?” He asked. From the rasp in his voice he assumed it was a while.

“Three day.” Trowa said from the chair by the bed. “You had an anxiety attack and stopped breathing. When we got you here your oxygen intake was still low. They gave you anxiety medication and you just kept sleeping. You had night terrors so they restrained you. You were volatile.” A bruise darkened Trowa’s chin to prove it.

“Sorry.” He sighed as he laid back against the pillow and remembered just what had managed put him in the hospital bed. He had been talking to Sally about Duo when this had happened. He closed is eyes. What had he done? He had spent all these years hating Duo for what he had done and hating Heero. When really Duo had done it for the wrong reason and Heero had been a pawn in Duo’s game. He should have known. He should have realized tat Duo would do something like this. It was a classic move by Duo.

“I look better then Heero. You caught him in the nose.” Trowa told Wufei as he sat by the bed. He could see the exhaustion in Wufei’s eyes and knew he was still weak. It bothered to see one of the men he thought of as a brother like this. Knowing what had done it.

Wufei smirked. How fitting. Once upon a time Duo had broke Wufei’s nose during an episode. Every time Wufei looked at the small bump that had remained it reminded him of that day. Now Heero would have his own. “Lucky for you then. Quatre came out unscathed.”

“No, Quatre didn’t. Quatre learned the hard way not to stand at the foot of the bed when you’re trying to move. He got a foot in the groin. I’ve learned to stay clear of your feet.” He smirked as he glanced over at Quatre who was standing across the room watching warily.

Wufei smiled and laid his head back against the pillow. “You going to unstrap me now.” He asked as he stared down at the restraints that made him uneasy. It reminded him of the war and being held prisoner and that alone made him want to panic.

“We told Sally we would contact her when you wake up. She wants to examine you. You scared the hell out of her Wu.”

“My chest was tight.” Wufei explained.

“Yeah. Sally believes that you have an anxiety disorder. She said that you must have had it for years to be this extreme.” Trowa studied Wufei’s face for a flicker of emotion but got nothing. It hadn’t been a surprise and he didn’t even seem to be concerned. He had yet to ask if he would be all right.

“Did you ever black out?” Quatre asked. He walked over to the bed and placed a hand on Trowa’s shoulder to calm him.

“It’s been a long time.” Wufei admitted. He had never told anyone about the blackouts. Not even Duo. The one time that Duo had found him he had said that he had fell. He had been able to control it, at least that was what he believed.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Anger burned in Trowa’s voice.

“I was Duo’s care giver. I needed to take care of him. My problems came second.”

“Wufei.”Quatre said softly. He could see that Trowa was getting angry at the entire situation. They had all been friends for too long and to know that there were this many secrets bothered them both. Not because they had secrets. They understood that but the fact that their friends had held onto their pride and been so stubborn burned at Trowa.

“Look I dealt with it.”

“Sally seems to think that you had a lot of blackouts. Your oxygen levels won’t pick back up. She says that there is extensive damage to your lungs and maybe even your heart. She barely got you breathing again Wufei. She says that the next attack could be it. You can’t go home until we get this fixed.”

“I can’t stay here Barton. I just can’t. I left this shit. I should be home right now.” He said as tried to slide his hands from the restraints.

“You’ll die.” Trowa grabbed Wufei’s wrist and held it down against the bed.

“What do I have left to live for?” He snapped.

“Yourself!” Trowa snapped. “That is what you should have been living for to begin with. Your entire life shouldn’t have been Duo. We all had to find our place after the war. You and Duo found each other. It’s time to learn. We don’t want to lose another brother. We cremated Duo today. We can’t handle cremating you. Do you think that Duo would have wanted this? For either of you to follow him.”

“Don’t talk to me as if I’m a child.” Wufei’s voice was barely above a whisper but full of venom. Had he not been retrained then he might have actually been a danger but it didn’t concern Trowa. He was already so angry that he was seeing red

“Then don’t act like one.” Trowa yelled. Quatre paced the room with his arms crossed like he was trying to hug himself.

“Trowa get out.” Heero snapped as walked in with Sally. She hurried over to Wufei injecting something into his iv.

“You can’t get all worked up like this.” Sally panicked. “Your oxygen intake is too low. Stress is making it worse.” She said as her eyes scanned the monitors that he was connected to.

“You . . . drugged . . . —” Wufei slid back into the darkness fighting it as he went.

Sally sighed. “I doubt that he’ll make it a year.” She said softly shaking her head. “He’ll be out for hours why don’t you all go and grab something to eat or get some sleep.”

Quatre dropped his arms and sighed heavily. “I should check on Trowa.” He looked back at the bed and shook his head before going off to find his husband.

Heero dropped into a chair. “What are you thinking Sally?”

“I’m angry that he could keep it all bottled inside him. I knew from the time that I met him that there was something inside him that was missing. He had been hurt by everything he had been put through in his life. He spent so many years trying to be the son that his parents wanted and he never could be good enough. He takes too much on. He struggles with it and he won’t let anyone be there to help him. I think that if he goes home he’ll ignore it and let everything eat away at him. Who knows when we’ll find out. How long will it take someone to find his body? When he goes, I think he’ll die. Part of him blames himself now. I thought that what I told him would give him some closure instead it nearly killed him.” Her eyes tore up as she remembered Wufei’s expression when she had told him. She had never thought to see a look like that on his face as if she had broken something inside him.

“What was it.” He asked. She shook he head and adjusted the drip in Wufei’s arms. “Sally you can tell me. I’m not going to be hurt.”

“I thought that he was strong enough.” She said softly. “I loved him once. I thought that we could make it. Even after Duo and Wufei got together I still held hope. I can’t tell you.” She whispered sadly.

“Duo loved me Sally. I knew when I got with him he loved Wufei. He was everything to Duo. Everything.”

“He wanted Wufei to be happy. That’s all he wanted.” She said softly staring at the iv as if it needed her attention when she really just wanted to disappear from the room. She couldn’t be the one to hurt these men anymore. They had enough to deal with.

Heero smiled sadly. “Yeah I knew there was a reason he came to me. I didn’t question it though. I’ll make sure that he doesn’t die. Duo would have wanted that.”

“How will you keep him here?” She questioned as she looked at him.

“That house is his. With Duo gone.”

“There is Duo’s will. It still has to be read.” She shook her head. There is no way to tell if that will stop him. Wufei got that house with Duo because Duo wanted it. Duo had this need for normalcy and he believed that house would bring it. Wufei has no need for anything permanent. He only ever needed Duo. He could easily live his life as a nomad for the rest of his days. That house isn’t a way to keep him tied here.”

“I’ll find a way to keep him here. Guilt if I have to.”

“He’ll be on medication for the rest of his life but he should be able to live a normal life.” Sally said as she stared down at Wufei. The only time he ever looks so peaceful is when he is asleep.” She shook her head and headed out of the room. Heero stared at him as Sally had and wondered how he would get Wufei to stay. A smirk crossed his face and he nodded. Wufei wouldn’t even know what hit him.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

“When the hell are you going to take these restraints off me.” Wufei snapped as soon as Sally walked into his room. He had been lying there for at least an hour unable to push the call button or do anything else.

Sally put on her stethoscope and adjusted Wufei’s bed. “Breathe in.” She said softly as she pressed the stethoscope to his chest. “Again.” She said when he did as she asked.

“Well.” He snapped. She removed her stethoscope and wrote down his information on his chart. The gundam pilots temperaments had never phased her and she continued to ignore him. “Don’t you sedate me either.”

She adjusted the bed so he was lying down again and fixed his iv. “If I feel that you need to be sedated then I won’t hesitate to do it. I won’t take the restraints off because I know what you’ll do. You’ll take out the iv and sneak out as soon as someone isn’t looking and that will be the end of it.” She snapped as she looked out the window. “I don’t have the time to fight with you, or the energy. Between you and Heero I can’t take anymore.” She said. Tears welled in her eyes but she shook her head and straightened her shoulders. “I have Trowa and Quatre screaming at each other and blaming me for what you two are dealing with and Heero...”

“What about Heero.” He snapped at her. He frowned at the signs of tears. Sally had always been the strongest woman that he knew and it was unlike her to be affected this way.

“He came to me after you collapsed and started hounding me to know what I had said.”

“You didn’t...” He was nearly speechless as he stared at her stunned.

“I told him that I wouldn’t tell him and then he continued to hound me. You know how the five of you are. If you want to know something then you will find a way to get that information.”

“You told him.” He snapped. It had been information that he couldn’t handle he was sure that it would be information that Heero couldn’t handle either. He couldn’t believe that she would tell Heero after what ad happened when she told him.

“He wouldn’t stop.” She said softly.

“What did he do?” Wufei snapped.

“Trowa followed him to the field. He was trying to pilot a suit. Trowa stopped him before he
could get it running. He was going to . . . We have him admitted to the psych ward for now.”

Wufei laid there stunned. He didn’t doubt what Sally told him. There had been plenty of times during the war that Heero had been willing to give up his life, and if he were to do it now he would still choose that way. He could almost see Duo standing in the room staring at him. He had made a promise to Duo. He had sworn to Duo that he would be there for Heero. He couldn’t stand by and watch Heero end his life.

“Get these off me Sally.” He snapped

“Wufei you’ll just try to leave.” She shook her head.

“I have to go beat a dumb ass.” He snapped. “Let me up.”

“Wufei if you stress yourself out you could have another attack.”

“I’m not going to collapse. Let me up.”

“Look at your blood pressure you are raising it just by...”

“Then let me up. I’m a war vet. Have you ever met one that wouldn’t have flashbacks when you restrain them. Let me up.”

Sally grumbled under her breath and released the restraints and watched as he struggled to his feet. “How much of that crap did you pump into me.” He asked when his legs shook.

“Your lungs stopped. It caused your heart to stop. Don’t you think you would feel weak? Sit in the wheelchair.”

“Where is the idiot?” Wufei said clinging to the pole. He glared at te iv bag and wondered what was in it.

“Upstairs.” She said. “Wufei” She screamed after him when he walked out of the room pulling the iv pole behind him. She picked up the phone and dialed Heero’s room. “Barton.”

“Chang is on his way up stairs. This had better work.”

“I think it will.” Trowa chuckled. He hung up and she followed Wufei down the hall chuckling as she noticed the gown wasn’t covering his backside. She looked over at the nurses that were ogling him and stared at them waiting for an explanation

“We couldn’t find a gown that fit him.” The head nurse told her quickly. “He’s much larger then the rest of the patients. That was the biggest gown that we carry.”

“Thank God.” Another nurse said as she fanned herself. “Anyone that has a backside like that should go without clothes. It’s a crime.” She sighed. “It’s like he was chiseled out of stone.”

“He is not going to be pleased” Sally sighed.

“It’s worth it.”

Sally caught up with Wufei as he headed into Heero's room. “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK THAT YOU’RE DOING YOU FOOL.” Wufei snapped as he clung to the pole that held his iv bag. Sweat was doting his forehead. Heero was laying in the bed restrained like Wufei had been. Trowa stood on one side of the bed and Quatre sitting on a chair on the other side of the bed.

“Why is he here?” Heero snapped at Trowa. “Go away, Wufei.”

“Do you think that he wanted this. That he would want to see you die.” He grabbed Heero’s arm. Quatre went to grab him but stopped and sat back down. Trowa lifted an eyebrow at his husband wondering why he was just sitting back smiling to himself.

“Wufei this can’t be good for you.”

“I promised Duo that I would make sure this idiot was okay and he goes and does something stupid like trying to kill himself. What the hell is that going to prove.”
“Weren’t you willing to do the same?.” Trowa asked with a smirk on his face.

“I’m not trying to kill myself.” Wufei snapped. “I’m not trying to die. I just don’t want to be here.”

“So you are going to do everything that you can to prevent your own death. Like take care of yourself. Like going to the doctor.”

“Leave me alone Barton I am tired of you harassing me. This is about him being stupid. Duo wouldn’t want this”

“No he just wanted you. To be happy and he used me to get that. Now you would throw that away. What do you really care what I do.”
“You will not throw this away. I wont let you. Personally I don’t care what you do but I promised him.” He turned and stormed out of the room. Trowa’s jaw dropped and he looked over at his grinning husband and glared.

“Quatre.”

“It doesn’t hurt look.” He shrugged.

“I’ll make it hurt.”

“Will you to get me out of this shit?.” Heero nodded to the restraints and iv.

“Can’t! Have to make this believable. Need to wait for you to be ‘released’.” Trowa smirked
as he dragged Quatre from the room. “You like the show?” he asked staring at quatre as they headed to the waiting room.

“I like yours more.” Quatre grinned. “Just never thought that we’d see Wufei walk around with his ass showing.”

“ONNA!!!” Wufei screamed from the floor below.

“I’m guessing he just figured it out.”

“Yep” Quatre snickered. “This is going to be an interesting few months. I think that they actually might be good for each other.”

“Yeah. You know I didn’t think anything good could come out of Duo’s passing but this might be it. They are both finally free to live their lives. No more taking care of Duo. I know they both loved him, but it turned to be more like them being his parent. He needed so much more ten they could give. If either of them had trusted us to help.” His voice trailed off as he wondered how much would have changed if they could have helped.

“We couldn’t have saved him Trowa. We tried to help when we found out. Heero wouldn’t let us. Duo would have gotten worse. He was out of control and the medicine just wasn’t working. He couldn’t help it any more then we can. I’m just thankful we had the time that we did with him. Duo did as much good for them as he did hurt them. Remember how antisocial they were. Wufei wouldn’t allow himself to come anywhere near us during the war. He HAD to be by himself.” Quatre said. “And Heero. He was locked up behind so many walls. He needed to act like a robot. Look at how far they have come. Wufei would have never done that. He would have said if Heero wanted to die let him and Heero he never would have tried to give Wufei a reason to live. I think that these two need each other more then they can imagine, and I am going to enjoy watching them overcome it.”
“Its so bitter sweet.”

“If he could have been saved then we would have saved him. I miss him too.”

“He was like our brother and that hurts. I can only imagine how they both feel. Had it been you.” Pain darkened Trowa’s eyes as he stared at his husband.

“I know. I don’t think I would make it without you.” he kissed Trowa softly. “This time we’ll make sure that they let us help.”

“I don’t think it works that way. I think that this time they are going to have to figure it out themselves. Only they can’t make themselves want to live. We just need to stand by and watch.”
